Let's hope Unai's cup luck carries on because 1996 is a long time ago. McGinn back in and as captain worries me. We will need to see where he is playing.

A little disappointed with the line up, especially with Bailey being out. Their defence were carthorse slow on Sunday.

Bailey destroyed them, he should be starting. Still I think they have made a handful of changes too. We will see, I suppose.

Not quite sure what his thinking is with that selection. Only 1 other game before a huge break and would have thought he’d have gone full strength. Was going to stick a tenner on for us to win but don’t think I’ll bother now.
Title: Re: Manchester United v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Toronto Villa on November 10, 2022, 07:07:23 PM
I don't think we can judge the line up until we see how they play under this manager. Under Gerrard this would be a disaster. I'm going to play the wait and see game.

Post by: Brazilian Villain on November 10, 2022, 07:12:09 PM
Way too weak at the back, leaving out our senior World Cup players and Mings. 7,500 have travelled up, it's Man Ure and it's only one of 2 cups we can win this season. Very disappointing especially as Yanited have gone with a strong team.
Title: Re: Manchester United v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Brend'Watkins on November 10, 2022, 07:12:53 PM
Disappointed with that line up. We’ll be lucky to keep them out but it depends how he’s set them up. Like has been said, can’t see the point of an under strength side with such a lengthy break coming up.

He will use this to learn who his players are when it matters. If he can make that team compete tonight, then he is very very good

Post by: Mister E on November 10, 2022, 07:15:37 PM
I guess he wants to see the whole squad in a competitive environment before the break, but it looks very experimental and not that progressive. Why not, for example, play Archer if you want to be experimental?

Fair comment.  Flies in the face of Emery's comment that he wanted to win a trophy.  That lineup suggest he actually can't be bothered.  Disappointing.

Agree.  Most of our squad are not going to the world cup and have plenty of time to rest and have played no European games - no excuses for tiredness.

Interesting. McGinn gets another opportunity in his proper position, behind the strikers. Watkins and Ings has never really worked before, but we'll see. With Luiz and Kamara starting together (for I think only the second time), it might work better tonight.

Disappointing.

Just trying to keep the fringe players happy but at the expense of a serious crack at the cup.

I think there will be an element of wanting to see some more of the squad in action too. Let's see how it pans out. We might be surprised (we probably won't).
Title: Re: Manchester United v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Toronto Villa on November 10, 2022, 07:23:17 PM
Let's just see how it pans out. The players aren't being given a game plan from Steven Gerrard. So I get there is concern, but I'm also intrigued how a proper manager and coaches will have prepared us for this game.
Title: Re: Manchester United v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: tomd2103 on November 10, 2022, 07:23:29 PM
We'll have to see how it goes, but that is a disappointing selection on paper.  They have made the same amount of changes, but are arguably stronger in certain areas.  We are considerably weaker in almost every position as a a result of our changes.

Yep, especially as quite a few of the "big" teams are already out so it'd represent a good opportunity in the next round.

Anyway UTV and time for 'El Maestro' to make us all eat humble pie later. We'll probably get Citeh away anyhow.

I'll be a tad miffed if it doesn't work. A bunch of the favourites are already out, one game until the break with most of the squad staying home. Fingers crossed Unai has played a blinder and we twat them.

Hmm, that's a poor line up and he's going to get avoidable stick if it doesn't work.

On the bright side, they're starting Van De Beek again, inexplicably.

I think if Gerrard had won Sunday, he would change the team only so it wouldn't be flagged as a fluke win.
But I hope this isn't as bad as it looks on (Gerrard) paper, and these players can be coached to play well

I suppose if we are being charitable, then it's pretty common to change goalie for cup games, Digne has only just come back from injury so three games in a week might be a stretch, and Bailey did go off injured on Sunday so who knows if he's fully fit.

I can see there is logic in wanting to look at more players before there is an unprecedented break in the league.  It will allow him to see where there are potential areas of weakness and start working on it before January.  I don't agree with the decision though.

Emery uses rotation- hes about the collective.
He'll have us sorted in a 4-4-2 and will be fine I think.
Can make things go our way with a combating midfield a great selective mix and good opportunity for McGinn to show what he can do under Emery instruction.
Up the Villa!

It's an extra 5 games to win it after tonight. I don't get why anyone wants to wait on winning a first trophy for 26 years just so as we can maybe finish 9th instead of 10th.

I get your point of view and want us to win something but so early into emery’s reign, would rather we established ourselves in top flight as never felt since we went up we wouldn’t slide out of the league at some point. In short I don’t want us to do a blose. But don’t underestimate my desire for us to win tonight. Come on villa! We can do this

Bit surprised with the comments.

This line up still has over 50m worth of strike talent and Ramsey is starting and they can never handle his forward runs. Nice to see Kamara get a start alongside Luiz,

It's just the backline which is a little below strength.

Think Unai's plan here is to keep it tight for an hour and then put on Bailey + Buendia when a bit more space will open up later on.

seems like we are playing for pens. most of our possession is across our 18 yard line the only forward passing is from a defender to a midfielder who has a red shirt right up his chuff, consequently we surrender possession.
I'd love to see one of our strikers really hassle McGuire.

We have quite a few players in who are either coming back from injury or haven't played much and I think it's showing. That said I think we're trying to draw them on to us so we can play into the space they leave but we've just not quite go the break right yet. It looks poor but I can see what we're trying to do unlike a lot of games earlier in the season.

Aston Villa are playing an aggressive line and are playing better without the ball. They're working hard, working as a team, a structure, a unit. They're trying to condense the pitch, pressing up high and working ever so hard in midfield.

They just need to be a bit better in possession.

Talking out of his arse there though, suggesting it's easy to just defend, as if we haven't come closest to scoring.

Either way I think what we've been doing makes sense but we need to be a bit more willing to run in behind and get Slabhead facing the wrong way, especially now he's on a booking.

We've played as I thought we would. Bit worried we'll just gift them a goal with a stupid pass though.

What on earth was Chambers doing it smashing it across our backline, were lucky to get away with that one. Luiz and Konsa were also giving it away at times holding on too long.

They really haven't offered much and we arguably have more options on the bench to change it so expecting Bailey and Buendia on at hour mark.

Perfect game plan by Emery so far.
Set up for a one off cup tieb away from home.
Very organised.
Don't think McGinn is up ti much apart from an awfuk foul condceding a free kick which could have been costly .
An anonymous liability who looks clueless!

Think majority of team look assured if a little pondering.
Young the pick of the players first half. Wonderful.

Watkins scored a good goal, but his touch tonight has been shocking.  Given how Emery tends to like technical players, I suspect Ollie hasn't done himself any favours tonight.

Exactly.  Emery has just walked in and has used this game to have a look at his back up keeper. I would think he's seen enough to know Olsen isn't good enough. We need a solid reserve keeper.

Olsen has been poor but McGinn has been the biggest problem for me, as has happened all season he's just given up possession far too easily time and time again, dreadful performance from him.

Way we constantly fold in away games this season is very alarming.

2-1 up with half an hour left and we throw in that.

Wouldn't have taken Ramsey off and think Kamara ran out of gas so he really should've gone off instead.

Very disappointing way to exit the cup having got ourselves in a nice position to see the game out.

High lines and constantly playing from the back, not good enough defensively to do that every single move just yet as tonight showed.

We are weak mentally away from home. Another 4 conceded but at least Emery has seen it for himself. We lack leaders and still shrink when under the pump. Some serious work to be done in January and in the summer. 3 different coaches have seen 3 capitulations away from home.
