He will use this to learn who his players are when it matters. If he can make that team compete tonight, then he is very very good

And if he can't, then we've thrown away another cup competition for a year.

Yep, especially as quite a few of the "big" teams are already out so it'd represent a good opportunity in the next round.

Anyway UTV and time for 'El Maestro' to make us all eat humble pie later. We'll probably get Citeh away anyhow.

I'll be a tad miffed if it doesn't work. A bunch of the favourites are already out, one game until the break with most of the squad staying home. Fingers crossed Unai has played a blinder and we twat them.

Hmm, that's a poor line up and he's going to get avoidable stick if it doesn't work.

On the bright side, they're starting Van De Beek again, inexplicably.

I think if Gerrard had won Sunday, he would change the team only so it wouldn't be flagged as a fluke win.
But I hope this isn't as bad as it looks on (Gerrard) paper, and these players can be coached to play well

I suppose he may want to have a look at other players. He's not going to get much chance for a few weeks.

If Martinez was in and McGinn not then I could squint and see the point

Bit baffling to my mind

Somebody on Twitter suggested yesterday that there are only two good ways for PL teams to approach the League Cup. 1. Win it or 2. exit at the earliest opportunity. Sadly we seem to be taking the second option.

Get real, he is just having a look at all the players and will judge them accordingly.

Gonna stay off this thread as unpopular opinion would rather focus on the league rather than criticise gaffers choice second game in. See you on the other side

I’m in a bad mood because of the team selection and now they’re playing fucking freed from desire over the public address system. I want to go home.

I suppose if we are being charitable, then it's pretty common to change goalie for cup games, Digne has only just come back from injury so three games in a week might be a stretch, and Bailey did go off injured on Sunday so who knows if he's fully fit.

I can see there is logic in wanting to look at more players before there is an unprecedented break in the league.  It will allow him to see where there are potential areas of weakness and start working on it before January.  I don't agree with the decision though.
