A strong side, but fuck me, there is no invention in it. McGinn again, 2 up front again, Bailey and Buendia dropped. Sanson is clearly dead. And Ashley Young starts. Like that was really needed
-
Luiz and Kamara as a double pivot maybe?
I suspect that’s just wishful thinking
-
I'm happy that Konsa isn't starting. Wouldn't have ever written that 2 years ago. Surprised Olsen isn't in goal.
-
Win please.
-
Well, he wasn't lying about giving it a good go in the cups.
-
Luiz and Kamara as a double pivot maybe?
I suspect that’s just wishful thinking
Not with two up front unless he's just come up with 4222 in the last 48 hours.
-
Diamond midfield… width from fullbacks.
-
wow.. I was expecting to see more fringe players. Looking to build chemistry/consistency or afraid to lose?
Hope we see Archer and Tim.
-
If that team loses they should walk home and Gerrard should stay there.
-
If all goes to plan tonight, I reckon if you swap Cash back in for Young you'll have your starting lineup for Sunday.
-
Pretty strong, would rather have seen Archer. Feel a bit sorry for the Swedes they must be thinking they'll never get a chance.
-
Win please.
Yep. Love the league cup.
-
That will be the starting XI with the exception of Cash returning to replace Young.
-
Why start with Young, I reall don’t get that?
-
No idea why he’s playing Young or McGinn. Would have liked to have seen Archer up front.
-
More than enough to put Bolton away
-
No idea why he’s playing Young or McGinn. Would have liked to have seen Archer up front.
Confidence? He might look halfway decent against Bolton.
-
The side of a manager feeling the pressure
-
Would have preferred to see Archer start ahead of Watkins. No doubt Ollie will score a couple tonight and be an untouchable for the next 2 months. Archer potentially offers so much more, he deserves a proper chance to play with the big boys.
-
I like the team. Good strong selection.
-
Buendia dropped again. He must be pissed off.
-
The side of a manager feeling the pressure
That's what I thought. If fringe players like Archer can't get a start against a League One side in this fixture, he may as well be out on loan.
-

To be fair, I thought Watkins was head and shoulders above his teammates on Saturday and excellent against Everton.
-
I like the team. Good strong selection.
That's what most said on Saturday. If only we had to play just on paper.
-
It beggars belief that Cam is on the bench in an early round of the League Cup against a Division 1 side. At least Smith had the courage to start him in the cup matches.
-
Whatever happened to blooding youngsters?
At least Young has found his level.
Come on Villa boys, win the match!
-
To me he is really trying to build confidence and chemistry. Had we started the season off well I still think it would be a strong side, but there would have been more rotation.
-

SG taking no chances here. Next match not until Sunday so this is an opportunity to hone the first team.
-

Yes true. I was happy with the team that took to the field at Palace. The problem came when they actually had to do something. In the words used in the Athletic article "lacked organisation". The first sin of professional football.
-
If we're 2 up at half time, then put Cam and Tim on and Josh later. Is it 5 subs also in this cup?
-
Potentially a selection to try and build confidence in most of our normal starting 11.
-

I like the teamselection today too; Luiz in i like that and try something else at RB where we have been most vulnerable IMO; might be our strongest at the moment. We vill win this.
-
Looking at that side, I expect to see a morale-boosting evisceration tonight.
-

Think he has every right to be pissed off. He started and scored against Chelsea away last year in this, think he'll be away on loan before the end of the month.
-

Yes, that’s how it looks to me.
-
If we're 2 up at half time, then put Cam and Tim on and Josh later. Is it 5 subs also in this cup?
Yep (plus up to two "concussion subs" if necessary).
-

Yep (plus up to two "concussion subs" if necessary).
We've had numerous opportunities to use a concussion sub, yet McGinn is still on the pitch week after week (I'll get my coat).
-
It looks like an easy option 11 to me. Starting Archer and Tim is the right thing for them for their development, but would leave him open to pressure to play them if they play really well. It is easier to stick with his first team and hope that they find some rhythm.
I do hope the formation is a proper double pivot with McGinn in front, not this split 2 in front frantically trying to cover the full backs.
-
McGinn ffs if he won't drop him for this after another pathetic showing on Saturday then God knows what he will for.
-
It beggars belief that Cam is on the bench in an early round of the League Cup against a Division 1 side. At least Smith had the courage to start him in the cup matches.
I reckon that's the biggest sign yet that he'll go on loan.
Starting Watkins and Ings at Bolton?
The only way it could have been made more obvious would for him not to have been on the bench.
-
Really don't see why he's not picked both Swedes. Augustinsson is an international and should have the chance to challenge Digne.
-
Manager under pressure vibes off that selection. Should have more than enough to win. Don't get me started on the selection of the club captain.
-
If that team loses they should walk home and Gerrard should stay there.
Agreed.
-

It's very odd. Scoring goals for England u21s, good loan last season at Preston, clearly ready for an opportunity. Like is said, it looks like a safe, easy option team to me to prevent him having to make tough decisions down the line.
-
Plus if he does go out on loan we only have 2 recognised strikers and no back up in case of injury or suspension.
-
We have just sent our 4th choice centre half out in loan and one have 3 now, and are down to 1.5 wingers (not that he uses them). His squad management is becoming a bit Bruce.
-
Fancy a good Cup run this season as I doubt we'll make the top 10: come on Villa, give everyone a boost tonight!
-
Plus if he does go out on loan we only have 2 recognised strikers and no back up in case of injury or suspension.
I don't think for a second Gerrard is daft enough to send Archer on loan without first getting another striker in.
Is he?
-
Wonder what the scoop with Sanson is?
-
With Ings carrying an injury as well, you'd have thought he could do with being rested.
-

I don't think for a second Gerrard is daft enough to send Archer on loan without first getting another striker in.
Is he?
Yes. We just left ourselves with 3 centre halves. One of which is woefully out of form.
-
Wonder what the scoop with Sanson is?
He's obviously in the bomb squad with AEG.
-
This feels very much like a "papering over the cracks" 4-0 win, showing how everything is hunky-dory before a meek 2-0 defeat to West Ham at the weekend.
-
It beggars belief that Cam is on the bench in an early round of the League Cup against a Division 1 side. At least Smith had the courage to start him in the cup matches.
This round last year changed the whole trajectory of Cam's career. My gut feeling here is that there is only one career being considered with this team selection, and it isn't any of the players.
It's a strong side. I wouldn't play two up front, but he can't be criticised for not taking the cup seriously.
-
This feels very much like a "papering over the cracks" 4-0 win, showing how everything is hunky-dory before a meek 2-0 defeat to West Ham at the weekend.
You see, I dont get that. If we win, it's papering over the cracks. If we lose, it's going to be absolute chaos on here.
-

I'm inclined to agree although I'd prefer a 2-0 tonight and a 4-0 on Sunday. As an old aunt of mine used to say: ' wish in one hand and shit in the other and see what comes first'.
-
Wonder what the scoop with Sanson is?
No idea but it’s fucking stupid to eliminate him and Guilbert completely. Like why the fuck wouldn’t we at least use Freddie tonight vs Ashley Young? And Sanson over McGinn? Absolutely ludicrous.
-
A lot of Villa fans (my self included) have long said that we want to take the cups seriously and that the league cup is most realistic for us despite the past few winners. Gerrard has done that so I'm not sure it's fair for those with that viewpoint to then criticise him for picking a strong side. And if it builds confidence in some of our starters, all the better.
-
I wonder if Sanson has took a knock again? He didn't make the bench at the weekend either. He hasn't picked Guilbert once has he? I can't see why he would have tonight.
-
I am sure Cam will get game time tonight so not bothered that he is not starting. Both Ings and Watkins have scored in the last 2 games so won't hurt to get them a goal a piece tonight.
Glad Chambers in but
Marvelous
Elghazi
Sanson
Gilbert
Might as well pay them up as there seems no way back for them
-

Without knowing the politics at the club that's just the kind of thinking that wants me to see him gone.
-

Of course it would be. And if we win 4-0 (or even 1-0) I'll not be complaining.
It's just that the early rounds of the League Cup should really be Archer and Feeney seeing us through an easy win, with a few confidence-boosting minutes for Sanson, Olsen, Augustinsson et al.
-
It seems like we've learned nothing from when we reduced the value of about £35 millionsworth of players to zero.
-
Maybe SG thinks that due to Brexit, he can’t play any Frenchmen!!
-
I wonder if Sanson has took a knock again? He didn't make the bench at the weekend either. He hasn't picked Guilbert once has he? I can't see why he would have tonight.
We let our top RB prospect out on loan so why not use the next best RB at the club in games like this. I just don’t get why Ashley Young is starting any games anymore. As cover if we have nobody else…then sure. But we do. Someone we are paying to be a professional footballer at Aston Villa. Did he take a dump in Purslow’s coffee because now two managers have entirely ignored him.
-
Team selection looks to me like he’s shitting himself about getting beat, his job is definitely on the line with a defeat tonight!
-

If the confidence of our main starters is low, surely the priority should be on building that up rather in those who won't be starting regularly?
-
Team selection looks to me like he’s shitting himself about getting beat, his job is definitely on the line with a defeat tonight!
I don’t think it’s that. We don’t have game until Sunday and we’ve been shit so far. Strikes me as he is trying to get his system to work. Whatever that is.
-

Yes, that's how I'm feeling right now too.
-
I was so looking forward to seeing Archer start, should have known Gerrard would ruin it. He doesn't seem interested in developing the youngsters (see also Hayden sent out on loan, keeping Young instead). It's a massive red flag for me, apart from the sustainability angle I find watching young players come through the ranks to be one of the best things about supporting a club.
There's a difference between playing a strong team and your 'strongest' team, we can afford to play our best young prospect without throwing away a cup run. He certainly didn't hold us back against Chelsea last year!
-
This feels very much like a "papering over the cracks" 4-0 win, showing how everything is hunky-dory before a meek 2-0 defeat to West Ham at the weekend.
That’s the spirit.
-
If we don't batter a 3rd division side with this line up then we may as well give up.
-
Dirty fuckers.
-
Well, he wasn't lying about giving it a good go in the cups.
More a reflection that he probably feels he can't risk anything at the moment.
-
Where is it being shown?
-
Yikes. Thought that was in.
-
McGinn already looks like a headless chicken
-
If we don't batter a 3rd division side with this line up then we may as well give up.
I remember a 3rd division club beating Man U in this competition - however it w :as about 51 years ago :)
-
Two set of rules it is then from this ref
-
Where is it being shown?
Sky Sports
-
Yikes. Thought that was in.
Were so used to conceding early, I just assumed it was as well.
-
I said I wasn’t going to watch this tonight.
-

I agree. I’m glad he picked a strong side. I might have started Sanson and Cam but I can see what he’s trying to do - build rhythm and confidence. He’s got to a point with some fans that he will be criticised whatever he does
-
It's already tedious shite from Villa.
-
Ah. The “you’ve only come to see the Villa song”
There’s one to bite us.
-
Decent move, shite finish.
-
Ah. The “you’ve only come to see the Villa song”
There’s one to bite us.
That song boils my piss whether it’s us singing it to a lower league club or Man Utd signing it to us.
-
We sing some really shit songs.Apart from “we’ll meet again” at Barrow.I worry, think about what you wish for.
-
Finally a booking.
-
That's two shots by Phil that my granny could have hit harder.
-
How is that not a booking?
Oh it is
-
At least we’re making our class tell.
-
We sing some really shit songs.
I swear we’ve complained about our songs since I started going to the Villa, but they do seem incredibly shite nowadays.
-
Everything McGinn is doing is going to shit. Totally makes a mess of everything.
-
Ah. The “you’ve only come to see the Villa song”
There’s one to bite us.
That song boils my piss whether it’s us singing it to a lower league club or Man Utd signing it to us.
I don't mind it when we are playing Small Heath and all their fans suddenly remember where their ground is. When we sing it in matches where the crowd is lower than the average league attendance, it doesn't really work.
-
We aren't scoring a set piece against Bolton.
-
We aren't scoring a set piece.
I’ve modified it for you
-
We aren't scoring.
-
Probably was just about offside.
-
We are huffing and puffing a lot to blow the Bolton house down
-
Bolton getting away with murder.
-
Bolton getting away with murder.
Proper filthy shits
-
Come on you Villa boys!
-
Each of our forwards is desperate to score, and none of them is looking for the others.
-
Ollie offside.
-
Ings never looked up just had a low percentage shot. Pull it back to Coutinho or Watkins.
-
Watkins should have scored first time, Digne should have scored second time. Watkins scores third time... offside.
-
Miles offside
-
Would have preferred to see Archer start ahead of Watkins. No doubt Ollie will score a couple tonight and be an untouchable for the next 2 months. Archer potentially offers so much more, he deserves a proper chance to play with the big boys.
To be fair, I thought Watkins was head and shoulders above his teammates on Saturday and excellent against Everton.
Really? Each to their own, I guess. He certainly runs around a lot, I'll give him that.
-
Not exactly putting them to the sword are we?
-
Lee Hendrie needs his eyes testing.
-
Haha I love Lee Hendrie commentating
I think he is onside, look... he is miles offside (after replay)
-
Bolton score
-
FFS.
-
Here we go,
-
Fucking hell
-
Haha I love Lee Hendrie commentating
I think he is onside, look... he is miles offside (after replay)
Every time
-
FML
-
Of course
-
Oh dear.
I can hear the toll of a bell.
-
Look at him sat there pretending to scribble on his little pad.
Probably writing TURMOIL over and over.
-
Fucking hell…..player piss weak in the tackle again
-
Ffs
-
God we are utter bollocks
-
I hope that's a draft of his resignation letter Gerrard was writing there
-
Wow.
-
And that’s why Sky chose this match
-
Ffs
-
Oh fuck!
P + 4 + 5 =???
At least we'll all save some money if we go out tonight to pay our astronomical energy bills..
-
Is this a Glenn Whelan moment?
-
Look at him sat there pretending to scribble on his little pad.
Probably writing TURMOIL over and over.
He's drawn a picture of a spider.
-
Looked to be a foul on Doug, but it doesn't matter.
-
How many fouls were Bolton allowed to get away with in the build up to that 'goal'?
-
Fucking bollocks! What the fuck is Gerrard scribbling in his notepad?
-
Sky get the goal they wanted. Villa players tackling each other near our penalty area. My god we're in a mess. Sort it out Gerrard. Now.
-
Looked to be a foul on Doug, but it doesn't matter.
Don't think it was, but would have been given if Man United were the opposition.
-
Is anyone suprised?
-
It’s a bad thing that’s happening
-
Missed the goal as I was changing streams. I promise I won’t touch it again!
-
Is anyone suprised?
I’m drinking an Alcohol Free Doom Bar and it’s quite pleasant. That’s surprised me.
-
What’s happened to McGinn, the worst player by some margin
-
All over the shop. Fucking hell!
-
Sky get the goal they wanted. Villa players tackling each other near our penalty area. My god we're in a mess. Sort it out Critchley. Now.
FTFY.
-
It’s a bad thing that’s happening
This is deep
-
It wasn’t a foul and the defending was as bad as it gets……again!!!!!
-
Ah, the fresh taste of bleach, how I missed thee.
-
It’s a bad thing that’s happening
It is indeed Darren John
-
What’s happened to McGinn, the worst player by some margin
Followed by Coutinho
-
Mcginn is shit
-
Sky get the goal they wanted. Villa players tackling each other near our penalty area. My god we're in a mess. Sort it out Gerrard. Now.
Well yeah but hardly their fault is it
-
Here comes a crap set piece.
-
Coutinho looks up for it. Smash this free kick in, please.
-
These things happen... Just unlucky....
-
at least we can concentrate on the leag....... oh wait .
-
Just a reminder - Bolton are currently 7th in League One and are playing a weakened side.
-
Every McGinn pass is like a Tonev shot
-
Just a reminder - Bolton are currently 7th in League One and are playing a weak side.
FTFY
-
Just a reminder - Bolton are currently 7th in League One and are playing a weakened side.
Yeah, Villa.
-
30 mins already. We have barely troubled them.
-
These things happen... Just unlucky....
Yep every week ...just unlucky.
-
Sky get the goal they wanted. Villa players tackling each other near our penalty area. My god we're in a mess. Sort it out Gerrard. Now.
Well yeah but hardly their fault is it
Obviously. But sometimes these things follow a script. That's why they chose this game. It's up to us to rip up the script and ram it down their throats.
-
Looked to be a foul on Doug, but it doesn't matter.
Not sure, he seems to make a habit of going down easily or giving the ball away around the box. Quite telling nobody has come in for him, wouldn't bother me if he goes.
-
We are pretty crap, but I just don't see us losing this regardless of the current scoreline.
-
Fucking bollocks! What the fuck is Gerrard scribbling in his notepad?
His favourite Phil Collins' songs?
-
What a shit mcginn header there
-
Just seen the starting line ups. Are we 3-0 up yet?
-
Some things never change. Villa are still generally shit in the cups and H&V breaks every few mins when it's busy.
-
WTF was that from Young?
-
Disjointed, no pattern, no one carrying the ball, no one able to pass.
We are like a poor pub team
-
This is fucking shit. Again. Against a crap team who aren't doing anything.
-
Dean's side beating Bournemouth.
What could he do with these players?
-
Any Gerrard out chants yet? If it there's a game where it's all going to kick off it's this one. Ironically McLeish got all that abuse years back v Bolton aswell.
We need to get a goal quick.
-
We are so fucking bland
-
Even Everton are winning. Everton. Let that sink in.
-
Embarrassing
-
Goooooaaaalll
-
1-1
-
Goal Doug
-
Great corner.
-
Unbelievable
-
Goal
-
Fucking shit. Digne can't cross. Coutinho shooting when he can pass. Luiz outmuscled. You'd never guess we were two divisions above them.
-
Fucking bollocks! What the fuck is Gerrard scribbling in his notepad?
His favourite Phil Collins' songs?
Bet its land of confusion.
-
Dean's side beating Bournemouth.
What could he do with these players?
Yeah, he's really tearing it up at Norwich.
-
He did it again
-
1-1 Doug
-
Wahoo.
We’re still shite
-
What a shit mcginn
Fixed.
-
Ha ha what a weird goal.
-
Straight from the corner kick?
-
Take a bow Doug
-
Olympic goal by Olympic champion.
-
Steve Staunton-esque
-
Well well well
-
haha, quality!
-
That just kept the long haired tramp we have as set piece coach in a job for another month
-
Straight from the corner kick?
Yes
-
Yay. Flukey but who cares.
-
Are there any babbling brooks around? Mine's run dry.
-
Fucking shit. Digne can't cross. Coutinho shooting when he can pass. Luiz outmuscled. You'd never guess we were two divisions above them.
But Doug takes a great corner
-
Douglas Staunton
-
Ooh,love me a direct corner goal
-
Well, I didn’t think we’d score from a set piece.
If we did, I wouldn’t have guessed directly from a corner.
Bizarre.
-
Straight off the training ground that one.
-
Maybe after that gift we'll find some confidence and take control of the game... yeah it's not going to happen is it
-
Douglas Staunton
You read my mind. Put the ball there occasionally and flood the box. Things will happen
-
Yes, yes but less of the pouting stance 'celebrations' until you have further redeemed yourselves.
-
McGinn can do one. Having a shocker.
-
McGinn shite. New scapegoat. Fucking sort it out Gerrard!
-
Get in, Dougie....Every week we follow, the boys in claret and blue.....
-
Kamara is going to get booked
-
McGinn is like the fat kid at school who’s always last to be picked, I love him but he’s just shite and has been for ages.
-
We’re so slow and predictable.
-
Straight in again, please.
-
Wasn't far away.
-
Wow, he nearly did it again.
-
Why all the pauses mid sentence Lee Hendrie?
-
I get the idea of playing a strong team as a confidence builder by winning convincingly but you still have to win convincingly.
-
Get in, Dougie....Every week we follow, the boys in claret and blue.....
We even scored against Bolton in 2022
-
Have our fans gone for a pint?
-
I’m thinking Tuchel might be gone soon - we should be keeping an eye out for anyone decent. Bolton ffs.
-
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this before but Ings and Watkins together just doesn't work.
-
I get the idea of playing a strong team as a confidence builder by winning convincingly but you still have to win convincingly.
Yeah so far this hasn't inspired confidence in the fans or players.
-
This is fucking shocking. Digne in particular is a whole other level of shite tonight.
Pretty much our first 11 against a changed league one side. Unacceptable.
-
Not great.
-
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this before but Ings and Watkins together just doesn't work.
Watkins is the pin-ball man... can't control any pass hit up to him
-
That was total shit! Can say no more
-
Digne is particularly poor tonight. Doesn't matter if we win this, no one is fooled.
-
Have our fans gone for a pint?
At least they might be able to get one at Bolton's ground.
-
Whatever you think of Gerrard and his tactics, these bunch of arse holes should be putting in a better performance,
-
Did I hear booing at the halftime whistle.
-
Worrying defensively again and wide open for anyone to run through the midfield.
-
Absolute fucking embarrassing nonsense. This is a weakened League One side.
We look totally unprepared, like we've never trained together before, this is just awful rubbish.
-
I heard the commentator mention Ings' name in the 39th minute, it was the first time since he had that goal disallowed. Says a lot.
-
Tear gas.
We are consistently crap against teams that go direct and/or play physically. Loads of sub-par performances, not good enough.
-
McGinn is fucking dreadful.
Bolton are a horrible cynical bunch.
-
That just kept the long haired tramp we have as set piece coach in a job for another month
That made me laugh
-
The more I watch us, the less I want to watch us.
-
I heard the commentator mention Ings' name in the 39th minute, it was the first time since he had that goal disallowed. Says a lot.
I also heard this gem "Charles scored a FABULOUS tap in"
-
Ings and McGinn off
Archer and Buendia on.
-
The more I watch us, the less I want to watch us.
I'm pretending I'm watching Raiders of the Lost Ark. It's been fucking great.
-
Digne is particularly poor tonight. Doesn't matter if we win this, no one is fooled.
Surprised Augstinsson isn't out there but he's not on the bench so surely injured, hopefully nothing serious.
-
Well that was poo.
Very poor indeed. Shocking in fact.
It’s hard to see who’s the lower placed team here.
-
The more I watch us, the less I want to watch us.
It makes me furious/jealous when I see other sides with less talent make the game look easier and simply, more enjoyable to watch
-
Ings and McGinn off
Archer and Buendia on.
Swap the fucking lot
-
When the players were lining up in the tunnel McGinn was just staring at his feet not geeing up his team mates as I believe he should. It's the first time I've had a good look at McGinn and to be honest I thought he was getting some unnecessary stick. I was wrong, he wasn't. Absolutely awful.
-
Ings looks like he is one step away from a Zimmer frame.
McGinn would not look out of place in that Bolton team
Phil can’t even impose himself on Bolton.
-
Did I hear booing at the halftime whistle.
Yes Bolton fans disappointed they are not leading.
-
That was total shit! Can say no more
Not really, I was impressed with Almeida Santos, a very strong centre half. might be worth a punt before Wolves buy him.
-
Typical match against lower placed team in the cup. Should finish at a canter second half.
-
49% possession. Was about to laugh at Leicester only being level at Stockport but looks like they have a weakened side and still have 80% possession
-
McGinn is fucking dreadful.
Bolton are a horrible cynical bunch.
They are. But surely we were expecting that from a team two divisions below us? It's up to us to outclass them but it's hard to tell the difference between them on the first half showing.
-
I'm here and it's shit.
-
Just look so disjointed and some of them look like they don't know what they are supposed to be doing. Ings has been out wide and dropping deep, and has given the ball away pretty much every time he has done that. McGinn is constantly dropping deep in midfield and just isn't good enough on the ball to play there.
This system hasn't worked for some time now, yet he keeps persisting with it.
-
Fuck Off Gerrard with your formation and Ings and Watkins up front. This is dog shit again, take McGinn with you as well. He couldn't dominate Kilmarnock.
-
I like him but Watkins stats at HT are shocking.
-
Doug did the same at Walsall in pre-season and his corner after the goal tonight followed a similar trajectory with the keeper scrambling, so it's a bit unfair to call it a fluke. It's a great skill he has. A pity about the rest of the game.
Kamara has fouled countless times, giving away stupid free kicks. And he's reacted with a "You're wrong, ref" shake of the head each time. Hope this isn't a case of him struggling with the pace of the English game. We already carry enough passengers as it is.
-
Bolton playing some really good stuff. Excellent surface on pitch. As for us, well where to even start. Luiz soft as shite for their goal, Chambers sold himself badly. It's embarrassing really but we are level. Kamara fouling constantly is very annoying too.
-
Did I hear booing at the halftime whistle.
Yes Bolton fans disappointed they are not leading.
I'm here and didn't hear any booing
-
Doug did the same at Walsall in pre-season and his corner after the goal tonight followed a similar trajectory with the keeper scrambling, so it's a bit unfair to call it a fluke. It's a great skill he has.
Yeah, if someone like Beckham had done that they'd still be banging on about it now. Great goal, no fluke.
-
The more I watch us, the less I want to watch us.
Now there's something we can agree on, fella.
-
Bolton still look more dangerous when they are attacking. With the low confidence in our side, I can see us losing if it goes to penalties. I hope we can squeeze a 2-1 win but, could go either way. Another abysmal performance from us.
-
When teams press against us, they are like flies round shit, when we do it's is shit
-
Did I hear booing at the halftime whistle.
Yes Bolton fans disappointed they are not leading.
I'm here and didn't hear any booing
Maybe they were shouting "Booo-endia"?
-
I'm here and it's shit.
It's Bolton, what did you expect?
-
Did I hear booing at the halftime whistle.
It was Ads booing those leaving a min earely to go to the bog.
-
I like him but Watkins stats at HT are shocking.
He doesn't like playing with wrinkly, old ****** face. Have the 2 of them worked together in any of the 20+ times thicko swede head has tried it?
-
Doug did the same at Walsall in pre-season and his corner after the goal tonight followed a similar trajectory with the keeper scrambling, so it's a bit unfair to call it a fluke. It's a great skill he has.
Yeah, if someone like Beckham had done that they'd still be banging on about it now. Great goal, no fluke.
It was. Which makes you wonder why he can’t get a free kick over a wall. Not like he doesn’t have the talent to bang it into the top corner
-
Maybe SG is planning a DOL at Wycombe second half and will call us fickle afterwards.
-
Look at him sat there pretending to scribble on his little pad.
Probably writing TURMOIL over and over.
'..Right they've scored now. Aha! They've fell into my tactical trap!'
-
Surely Gerrard should be good at winning this sort of game based on his experience in Scotland?
-
Did I hear booing at the halftime whistle.
Yes Bolton fans disappointed they are not leading.
I'm here and didn't hear any booing
Apologies maybe it was just me in my own head. Fair play to you for being there and having to endure that first half.
-
They on about Gerrard making changes, yeah grab a few from the Villa support, they show you passion
-
Found myself at times sniggering at our own ineptitude which is not something I’m particularly proud of.
-
What’s happened to McGinn, the worst player by some margin
We got promoted.
-
I like him but Watkins stats at HT are shocking.
You sound surprised. He works hard but it's not enough. He needs to be more productive, more clinical and absolutely improve on his technical ability. He just looks a bit lost this year.
-
Emile Heskey’a performnace as a pundit is on a par with our first half performance
-
This system hasn't worked for some time now, yet he keeps persisting with it.
Einstein said said something about insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expect different results.
-
Tdid you see mcginn then fucking rubbish
-
wtf McGinn???
-
Surely Gerrard should be good at winning this sort of game based on his experience in Scotland?
We look very much like a Scottish side and not a very good one. His tactics are school yard.
-
what a fucking Captain at the back. This time Chambers after McGinn fucked things up
-
Great challenge by McGinn that.
-
Tdid you see mcginn then fucking rubbish
twat
-
This is a side which does not believe in, or understand what their manager is telling them to do.
-
Thought that was in
-
I really can’t work out why we are so bad, what’s actually wrong.
There doesn’t seem to be any calmness, assuredness in our play.
Everything is head down, 100 miles an hour, slapdash football.
Considering we have a squad busting at the seams with quality players, there is no quality in our play.
-
fucking hell, close to 2-1 Bolton
-
Did I hear booing at the halftime whistle.
Yes Bolton fans disappointed they are not leading.
I'm here and didn't hear any booing
Apologies maybe it was just me in my own head. Fair play to you for being there and having to endure that first half.
I am fairly sure I heard it on the telly. Weird!
Did we really not make any changes?!
-
I'm here and didn't hear any booing
Apologies maybe it was just me in my own head.
Are you sure it wasn't someone calling for mrfuse?
-
Fucking terrible defending. Absolute crap from McGinn. This is getting embarrassing.
-
What the fuck is McGinn doing. Him and his arse are an absolute liability.
-
Is McGinn drunk?
-
Jesus. We’re riding our luck here.
Can we please get Mings or Emi Martinez as Captain please?? Need some sort of leadership.
-
Luiz doing a McGinn there.
-
Luiz doing a McGinn there.
He was a little unlucky there. His standing foot slipped from under him
-
Not one player, on the pitch or off it, is worth bothering with . Set of twats !!! WTF was that Watkins!!!! Absolute garbage.
-
I don’t think McGinn looks with it at all.
Dougie trying to stand alongside him by air kicking
-
Kamara gets away with another
-
Did I hear booing at the halftime whistle.

Apologies maybe it was just me in my own head. Fair play to you for being there and having to endure that first half.
I am fairly sure I heard it on the telly. Weird!
Did we really not make any changes?!
I also heard the boos on the tv.
-
Was that a round of Steven gerrards claret and blue army?
-
Decent play.
-
Great move that to be fair.
-
Good effort
-
Set piece coach has been earning his corn I see. Short corner, piss about a bit then cross to the keeper. FFS.
-
Digne, pass the fecking ball.
-
We do look better when we actually give Coutinho the ball
-
Lucky kamara
-
Did Shughie invent that last short corner routine with Doug and Phil? Shite!
-
McGinn is careering around like a dodgem, and being about as much use.
-
Kamara gets away with his 54th foul of the game
-
Was that a round of Steven gerrards claret and blue army?
Think it was Stevie G's claret and blue army.
-
Post damn
-
Countinho looking better
-
Post damn
Okay then, damn.
-
We’re gonna score in a minute
-
Ings post
-
Need to get Archer and Bailey on.
-
Mcginn passing again rubbish
Get him.off
-
Ings scared me half to death then, I forgot he was playing.
-
Kamara gets away with his 54th foul of the game
Ridiculous, its easier to foul than do the hard yards and get back goal side.
Nice work from the front three there.
-
May as well give Archer a go, now.
-
Ings load of wank.
-
Ings back to missing sitters
-
Ings post
He might as well be posting on here.
-
Better
-
Mcginn couldn't control the peas on his fork tonight
-
Stop with that fucking Allez chant.Cringe.
-
Ings post
He might as well be posting on here.
Ha!
-
Digne, pass the fecking ball.
Ings was on the penalty spot with nobody around him.
-
Very wrong , I hate myself for it , but I want us to get beat! Put an end to this shit show!
-
I think Dougie and Kamara are playing well this half. From reading posts above this may not be a widely shared opinion!
If Ings isn’t an absolutely clinical finisher, he brings very little
-
Mcginn couldn't control the peas on his fork tonight
I find that quite difficult tbh
-
In a season of piss poor performances by McGinn I think this could be his worst. Making him captain seems to have filled his boots with concrete.
-
Mcginn,Watkins and ings need upgrading
-
The need for a central midfielder is there for all to see tonight. We cannot go into the rest of the season without sorting this.
-
Very wrong , I hate myself for it , but I want us to get beat! Put an end to this shit show!
U ok hun?
-
Penalty Villa
-
Penalty.
-
Penalty
-
What the fuck was that passing around the back?!
-
Pen. Ings had lost the ball
-
Ings very lucky, he totally fucked that up
-
Clear penalty. Get El Ghazi on.
-
Penno Villa. But in truth that was such a shit take around the keeper by Ings
-
Looked offside
Lucky villa
Take it
-
Ings was offside.
-
Quite a clear Penno but Ings first touch was quite heavy
-
Lot of yellow cards being shown.
-
Ings was offside.
Level.
-
Ings scores. 2-1 up.
-
Gooooaaaall
-
Yesss.
-
huzzah
-
Goal ings
-
Does a penalty count as a set piece?
-
Get buendia n bailey on now
-
WEM-BER-LEY
WEM-BER-LEY
WE'RE ALL PISSED UP AND WE'RE GOING TO WEM-BER-LEY
-
Dreadful touch from Ings when clean through, no way would he have got to that ball round the goalie.
-
Never a penalty
-
That's better.
-
How lucky was Ings there. The ball was heading for a goal kick. Really good pen though
-
Lee Hendrie just shut up you moron
-
Big celebrations though
-
Let's wrap this up now: get into the next round!
-
Ings left his leg in there, poor touch was never getting to it.
-
Quite a clear Penno but Ings first touch was quite heavy
Ings completely fluffed up the initial opportunity. Took the penalty well though.
-
Never a penalty
It was as blatant a penalty as you can ever hope to see.
-
Onsite there
-
These officials are terrible
-
On that note I’m sure I remember a song from my early days at Villa Park that said something like “we’ll sing you assembly when we get to Wembley” from score Villa score. Were those the actual words? They don’t seem to make any sense!
-
Ashley Young is a proper Shithouse.
Watkins was onside.
That linesman could get pickles out of a jar with that nose.
-
Coutinho bossing it now when on the ball
Much better 2nd half but needed to be
-
Lino at the Bolton end is having a bit of a mare at the moment
-
3-1
-
Lucky villa.
-
Goal
-
1-3.
-
Goooaaaallll
-
That's a bit more like it.
-
better
-
Ings was offside.
No
-
Game over
-
Cheeky finish
-
3-1
Are you watching or listening ?
-
Great goal.
-
3-1
-
It’s all a bit deceptive. I’m just not convinced at all
-
Digne with a nice finish.
-
Ings was offside.
No
Yes
-
Get a couple more Villa.
-
How lucky was Ings there. The ball was heading for a goal kick. Really good pen though
Yeah the ball was going out but that's irrelevant. A foul is a foul and he was taken out by the keeper. Digne as I type with a very good finish. Get in Villa
-
This is much better they’re playing with more purpose.
-
Lovely goal
-
3-1
Are you watching or listening ?
I'm sat on the bench. Wearing a Steven Gerrard mask and managing the team. That's why we aren't shit this half.
-
Ings was offside.
No
VAR would have found a way.
-
Get Tim on for Boo-boo
-
Get Bailey on now to scare the hell out of them.
-
Very wrong , I hate myself for it , but I want us to get beat! Put an end to this shit show!
U ok hun?
I am now, UTV, but? We still look like we’re going nowhere.
-
Comedy keeper.
-
Game over
Famous last words.
-
Their keeper has gifted us this game
-
Well done Lucas, that's more like it Villa
-
Very wrong , I hate myself for it , but I want us to get beat! Put an end to this shit show!
U ok hun?
I am now, UTV, but? We still look like we’re going nowhere.
Gerrard out!
-
3-1
Time to get booking (Feb. 26). https://www.ihg.com/holidayinn/hotels/gb/en/wembley/lonwe/hoteldetail?
-
Well played by Young there.
-
Young is really ‘ard ain’t he.
-
How Mcginn is captain over Mings is just baffling, not inspiring at all.
-
We haven't conceded straight after scoring either.
-
Their keeper is a clown, wtf was he doing?? 😂
Gifted us all 3.
-
Ha ha ha McGinn that free kick
-
Mcginn fuck off
-
Shocking from McGinn.
-
Ings was offside.
Level.
If Rashford was onside last night then Ings was miles on.
-
Ha ha ha McGinn that free kick
Pub player
-
McGinn I can’t even get angry any more I just laugh instead.
-
McGinn is having a genuine shocker, as bad as Konsa at the weekend
-
Ha ha ha McGinn that free kick
he's become laughably shit
-
McGinn still a load of arse.
-
Please take McGinn off now and let’s see the difference
-
Unlucky by McGinn, scintillating free kick. Must have taken a little deflection.
-
Jay Jay Okocha on the bench.
-
Is McGinn ok? I mean seriously? He looks a shadow of himself. Is he playing whilst poorly?
-
Ings was offside.
Level.
If Rashford was onside last night then Ings was miles on.
Is the correct answer.
-
By far the worst thing tonight has been……..
“on the vicinity”, Hendrie, L.
-
Pub Football McGinn! Pub football!
Oh McGinn, pub football,!
-
shall we just not have a captain , probably best
-
Three subs, no Archer 😕
-
He keeps mcginn on wtf
-
Unlucky by McGinn, scintillating free kick. Must have taken a little deflection.
Was he kicking a ‘Fly-away’ ball?
-
Archer is off on loan surely.
-
Ings was offside.
[/quote
Level.
If Rashford was onside last night then Ings was miles on.
Agreed and that was with VAR
-
By far the worst thing tonight has been……..
“on the vicinity”, Hendrie, L.
To be fair he did go to Smithswood School on the Wood.
-
How about Cam, Gerrard
-
You can see what he was trying to do.
-
Unlucky by McGinn, scintillating free kick. Must have taken a little deflection.
Was he kicking a ‘Fly-away’ ball?
Whilst wearing Charlie Brown caricature slippers.
-
I think Gerrard needs to relieve McGinn of the captaincy so that he can focus on his game.
-
Much better second half performance so far. Watkins has gone off just now but I think he has started the season reasonably well.
-
I know it’s only one game but Santos looks useful
-
Very wrong , I hate myself for it , but I want us to get beat! Put an end to this shit show!
U ok hun?
I am now, UTV, but? We still look like we’re going nowhere.
Gerrard out!
Wouldnt argue with you there BE. But you should maybe give him a little bit more time.
-
I think Gerrard needs to relieve McGinn of his hip flask so that he can focus on his game.
ftfy
-
Persisting with McGinn will be the undoing of Gerrard. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
Out of form West Ham will destroy this side on Sunday.
-
He’s really dig himself a hole hasn’t he. Mings obviously captain material, and our best defender. McGinn not worth a spot in the starting xi.
-
What has happened to McGinn? I’m convinced he can play at this level but he looks a shadow of the player he was 2 seasons ago.
-
Ings was offside.
No
VAR would have found a way.
True.
-
What was that thing between LB and Watkins when they subbed?
-
Back to pumping aimless balls.
-
Persisting with McGinn will be the undoing of Gerrard. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
I absolutely agree with this, it seems to be Gerrard's selected hill to die on.
-
This is still shite.
How on earth is McGinn still on the pitch.
-
This reminds me of the houllier era somehow. A bunch of reasonably good players just about trying. Let’s not forget it’s Bolton. Maybe they’ll start playing when McAllister takes over again.
-
The changes seem to have disrupted the small amount of "flow" that we had found
-
Ole, ole.
-
30 passes, all pretty much in our own half to achieve the square root of fuck all.
-
INGS bought that pen, goalie planted his foot and INGS ran in to it. Not a pen for me but they are given these days.
-
Watkins stropping off. There's something rotten in B6.
-
Mickey Ginn would be more effective than McGinn
-
Nice run and shot by Emi. Probably should have scored
-
This is still shite.
How on earth is McGinn still on the pitch.
Coz he’s *somehow* the fcking captain
-
Watkins stropping off. There's something rotten in B6.
Goal celebrations a bit subdued as well.
-
INGS bought that pen, goalie planted his foot and INGS ran in to it. Not a pen for me but they are given these days.
The goalkeeper hacked him to the ground. It was a 100% certain pen.
-
I think Gerrard needs to relieve McGinn of the captaincy so that he can focus on his game.
He’d look a twat twice in a month
-
I know it’s only one game but Santos looks useful
In WWE
-
Watkins stropping off. There's something rotten in B6.
I did not like that. Manager or captain need to have a word to him.
-
Clown defending.
-
INGS bought that pen, goalie planted his foot and INGS ran in to it. Not a pen for me but they are given these days.
I would say "good" to that. We need every help we can get right now.
-
Villa fans taking the piss out of a third division team. That's every bit as classless as Chelsea or Yanited. Cut it out please we're better than that.
-
I think "we're Aston Villa, we're taking the piss" having laboured to a lead against a third tier side might be our cringiest song yet.
-
INGS bought that pen, goalie planted his foot and INGS ran in to it. Not a pen for me but they are given these days.
The goalkeeper hacked him to the ground. It was a 100% certain pen.
Don’t take drugs kids.
-
Watkins stropping off. There's something rotten in B6.
Goal celebrations a bit subdued as well.
That’s because they are all going to play for Bolton in the future.
-
Watkins stropping off. There's something rotten in B6.
I did not like that. Manager or captain need to have a word to him.
McGinn tried, but it went well over Watkins' head.
-
It is all so messy and disjointed, and with a worrying amount of aimless lumping.
-
Archer on.
-
Archer on at last.
-
Watkins stropping off. There's something rotten in B6.
I did not like that. Manager or captain need to have a word to him.
What happened, missed it?
-
I mean, we are taking the piss. Just not the way the song implies.
-
I don’t think he should be near our first team, but you’ve got to love Young
-
I think Gerrard needs to relieve McGinn of the captaincy so that he can focus on his game.
I think Gerrard needs to relieve McGinn of the game.
-
INGS bought that pen, goalie planted his foot and INGS ran in to it. Not a pen for me but they are given these days.
The goalkeeper hacked him to the ground. It was a 100% certain pen.
Don’t take drugs kids.
It was a nailed on as any I have ever seen.
-
It is all so messy and disjointed, and with a worrying amount of aimless lumping.
Are you talking about the game or were you watching me and the wife last night?
-
Watkins stropping off. There's something rotten in B6.
I did not like that. Manager or captain need to have a word to him.
McGinn tried, but it went well over Watkins' head.
His comments or his passes?
-
It is all so messy and disjointed, and with a worrying amount of aimless lumping.
Are you talking about the game or were you watching me and the wife last night?
Ew

Yep. Absolutely crazy take to pretend otherwise.
-
I think "we're Aston Villa, we're taking the piss" having laboured to a lead against a third tier side might be our cringiest song yet.
That's what I was referring to. Not good.
-
Cam on, come on!
-
My missus said I don't seem too bothered watching this. I said it's not fooling anyone and you just know we'll get Man City in the next round.
-
I’m a believer that the players play for each other and the money they are earning. There’s too much of this “not playing for the manager” rubbish. It’s a farce of a comment.
-
Tim on.
-
Iroegbunam on for Luiz, who might get man of the match.
-
Watkins stropping off. There's something rotten in B6.
I did not like that. Manager or captain need to have a word to him.
What happened, missed it?
When Watkins went off he looked unhappy and then didn’t shake Bailey’s hand when he offered it. Bailey looked round at him briefly before he went on. From memory.
-
INGS bought that pen, goalie planted his foot and INGS ran in to it. Not a pen for me but they are given these days.

Don’t take drugs kids.

Yep. Absolutely crazy take to pretend otherwise.
He absolutely took Ings legs away. It's not even a discussion imo.
-
This performance isn’t fooling anyone. Except Gerrard.
-
Watkins stropping off. There's something rotten in B6.
I did not like that. Manager or captain need to have a word to him.
What happened, missed it?
When Watkins went off he looked unhappy and then didn’t shake Bailey’s hand when he offered it. Bailey looked round at him briefly before he went on. From memory.
Thanks.
-
4-1
-
Goooaaalllll
-
1-4 Bailey.
-
Lovely finish, Bailey
-
Superb goal by Bailey
-
Nice goal
-
I know it’s only one game but Santos looks useful
In WWE
Not at fault for any of the goals but he is 27 so probably not a young prospect to pinch 😂
-
That was a bit good, well done Leon.
-
That was lovely from Bailey
-
Bit of class from Leon
-
It is all so messy and disjointed, and with a worrying amount of aimless lumping.
Are you talking about the game or were you watching me and the wife last night?
Cam on.
-
Fair plays, that was lovely.
-
Regardless that the goal was scored, Williams should have got a straight red
-
Nice one Bailey!
-
Traore-esque finish.
-
JJ has to score there
-
Bailey class finish
Ramsay shite finish
-
Bailey needed that
We need him to fire this season
-
Jesus our songs are embarrassing
-
When Bailey does that you can see what a player he could be for us. Just class
-
Watkins, what's the score?
-
Unlucky Archer.
-
JJ doing the opposite of Bailey
-
No way archer should be going on loan again.
-
Jesus our songs are embarrassing
Really shite tonight.
-
Archer giving them hell since he come on
-
Got to be scoring that
-
Archer showing us what a proper forward does.
-
Are you watching Amir Khan?
-
Decent save, was hoping for a McGinn goal to boost his confidence.
-
4-1 on your big day out is the height of embarrassment.
-
Jesus our songs are embarrassing
Really shite tonight.
Every time we start that dirge 'every week we follow' my heart sinks.
it's so predictably shit, and everyone sings their version of it.
-
Tim is like a Rolls Royce. We need to play him and Kamara together
-
McGinn should have buried that too
-
Archer and McGinn missing sitters.
-
Ings man of the match? Not sure about that, lil Lee.
-
LH 'I wouldn't say it was stand out, but he really did stand out.'
-
Better 2nd half. More movement. Created spaces.
McGinn has been shocking.
-
Jesus our songs are embarrassing
Really shite tonight.
Every time we start that dirge 'every week we follow' my heart sinks.
it's so predictably shit, and everyone sings their version of it.
It’s the small time nature of “4-1 on your big day out” and “1-0 and you fucked it up” against lower league opposition that really grates.
-
Full time.
Much better second half. Well done. Now win the cup, please.
-
were going to walk the first divison
-
Ings man of the match? Not sure about that, lil Lee.
Daft
-
Gerrard getting a chant from the fans.
-
Ings man of the match? Not sure about that, lil Lee.
A quite ridiculous conclusion
-
Yay we did a win
-
Good second half - confidence looks a big issue - and hopefully this helps
Well done all
-
Job done. Credit where it’s due.
-
Finished with Steven Gerrard’s claret and blue army
He still has the fan base
-
Jesus our songs are embarrassing
Really shite tonight.
Every time we start that dirge 'every week we follow' my heart sinks.
it's so predictably shit, and everyone sings their version of it.
'Conquering Europe in 1982' should now be an interesting anecdote or a quiz question; it should not be chanted every fucking 5 minutes.
-
Finished with Steven Gerrard’s claret and blue army
He still has the fan base
Away fans always the last to turn
Internet warriors always the first
