Wonder what the scoop with Sanson is?

No idea but it’s fucking stupid to eliminate him and Guilbert completely. Like why the fuck wouldn’t we at least use Freddie tonight vs Ashley Young? And Sanson over McGinn? Absolutely ludicrous.

Without knowing the politics at the club that's just the kind of thinking that wants me to see him gone.

This feels very much like a "papering over the cracks" 4-0 win, showing how everything is hunky-dory before a meek 2-0 defeat to West Ham at the weekend.

You see,  I dont get that. If we win,  it's papering over the cracks. If we lose, it's going to be absolute chaos on here.

Of course it would be. And if we win 4-0 (or even 1-0) I'll not be complaining.

It's just that the early rounds of the League Cup should really be Archer and Feeney seeing us through an easy win, with a few confidence-boosting minutes for Sanson, Olsen, Augustinsson et al.

It seems like we've learned nothing from when we reduced the value of about £35 millionsworth of players to zero.

I wonder if Sanson has took a knock again? He didn't make the bench at the weekend either. He hasn't picked Guilbert once has he? I can't see why he would have tonight.

We let our top RB prospect out on loan so why not use the next best RB at the club in games like this. I just don’t get why Ashley Young is starting any games anymore. As cover if we have nobody else…then sure. But we do. Someone we are paying to be a professional footballer at Aston Villa. Did he take a dump in Purslow’s coffee because now two managers have entirely ignored him.

Team selection looks to me like he’s shitting himself about getting beat, his job is definitely on the line with a defeat tonight!

If the confidence of our main starters is low, surely the priority should be on building that up rather in those who won't be starting regularly?

I don’t think it’s that. We don’t have game until Sunday and we’ve been shit so far. Strikes me as he is trying to get his system to work. Whatever that is.

Yes, that's how I'm feeling right now too.

I was so looking forward to seeing Archer start, should have known Gerrard would ruin it. He doesn't seem interested in developing the youngsters (see also Hayden sent out on loan, keeping Young instead). It's a massive red flag for me, apart from the sustainability angle I find watching young players come through the ranks to be one of the best things about supporting a club.

There's a difference between playing a strong team and your 'strongest' team, we can afford to play our best young prospect without throwing away a cup run. He certainly didn't hold us back against Chelsea last year!

That’s the spirit.

If we don't batter a 3rd division side with this line up then we may as well give up.

Well, he wasn't lying about giving it a good go in the cups.

More a reflection that he probably feels he can't risk anything at the moment.
