I’m stunned Ross Barkley is starting this game, let alone in the squad. Really disappointed in this.

I hope he proves me wrong.

Currently sat in my back garden and I’ve just heard the Blose fan next door say to his Mrs that Barkley is starting. I’m not sure what’s sadder, the fact he’s starting or the fact the neighbour must have been glued to the internet to see our starting line up!!!

Smith's taking a big risk starting Barkley.

He'll cop some serious flak if we don't win.

Barkley should be nowhere near the squad, let alone the team. And surprised Kesler isn't on the bench given his form at right back for the under 23s.

Ok, I'll do it.

The selection of Barkley is evidence that Smith has lost the plot, and I guarantee that he will do fuck all all game, and probably cost us the match. In fact, we will definitely lose. Anyone who disagrees is a wanker with a dodgy browsing history and his (or hers) sister's phone number.

Can't believe Ross is in the matchday squad, let alone the starting 11?! What the hell is Smith watching to warrant a starting place for him over literally ANYONE ELSE in our squad - He'd better hope it pays off or it's gonna be hellfire on here at FT (or post Line of Duty at least!).

I'll call it here first - Another inept performance from Dross, and we'll be a goal or two down and he'll sub him for Keinan in the 65th min.

I'm stunned.... Absolutely stunned. What message does this send to the rest of the squad when a player who couldn't break wind, let alone break into a run gets in ahead of the other midfielders. Shocker from Dean, that.

Looks like 4-2-4 to me, which means bypassing the midfield and hoofi getting it straight up to the forwards.

I still think we'll win.

I think we just anticipate West Brom will actually attack so getting in extra attacker/ball carrier makes sense to me for the counter attacks.

I'm not as pessimistic by the team as some and think we'll create a decent amount today. Will be a more open game than many think.

Not really sure who else should be starting. I mean Nakamba stays in and it's a pretty negative midfield selection.

Barkley has had all his chances and thrown them away  he does not deserve to play for Villa and even if he scores 3 today he will not be playing for us next season so why block our younger prospects chances. Ramsey or Chukwumeka should start ahead of Barkley and Kessler should be at right back.

No it makes us look really small time. He’s a loan player who likely won’t be here next year. We are safe so while I can understand the argument of playing kids, it’s also a local derby where experience helps. There’s no massive risk in playing him plus lots of upside. I hope he does prove all of us wrong but chances are he will come short of that. But 6 pages mostly devoted to Ross Barkley playing is all a little daft.

Been shit so far.

At least he's wanting to get on the ball tonight, that's more than his last 3-4 appearances.

and did well to win the penalty.

Takes all sorts I suppose, but I think we've been the better side, far more menacing and we've been much slicker in our approach work. Final ball not there. Need to avoid set pieces ad they have 1 player capable from open play. Never a penalty for them, and ours was about as soft as they come.

The biggest problem is that we don't have a pattern of play to create chances. Every player who gets the ball has to stop and think what to, rather than there being the muscle memory passes because they know player A is going to position B etc.

Takes all sorts I suppose, but I think we've been the better side, far more menacing and we've been much slicker in our approach work. Final ball not there. Need to avoid set pieces ad they have 1 player capable from open play. Never a penalty for them, and ours was about as soft as they come.

I was berating that team selection prematch, but I don’t think we’ve played badly tbh.
Barkley getting involved, Doug much improved, El Ghazi and Traore a handful.
Loved the Mings headed clearance when he skittles two Baggies players in the process! 💪🏽

They've had two shots on target and one of those was free shot from 12 yards.

We lost our way a bit after the penalty but finished the half strongly.

Look at all the occasions we've passed around them and opened them up for crosses and stuff into the box. Just shows we desperately need another player who can make the right pass or shot in those situations as we simply don't have a reliable one without Jack.

El Ghazi played well so far.

Think we have played pretty well with the ball. Best AEG has played in a long time. Barkley did well to win the penalty and Traore has been ok. McGinn unfortunately doesn't seem to have put his contacts in.

Unfortunately without the ball we aren't offering much resistance. Perreira is running riot. Luiz and McGinn not proving our centre backs with much cover. Luiz keeps getting caught wrong side of the ball.

I'm going more by their last 6-7 games, they've won 3 of them so without checking that's probably more than Fulham, Brighton, Southampton Newcastle, Palace and perhaps even Arsenal. And errr ourselves.

I guess it's a low bar but we were truly dire v likes of Fulham and Newcastle for most of the game so this has been an improvement against similar level of opposition.

There was a gulf of quality between us in December, not so much now for various reasons.

Watkins works as hard as any striker we’ve had in about the last 20 years, and is still in with a shot of ending this season as our highest scorer in a single Premier League season. I’d like to know who we are supposed to sign to improve on him who isn’t going to cost north of 60 million quid. Luiz is 22 and is bound to be inconsistent at this stage in his career, but we’ve seen enough early in the season to think he can kick on.

McGinn is undoubtedly struggling at the moment, but again we’ve seen enough from him in the last 3 years that he deserves to not be written off.

These lads are paid a lot of money week in and week out to perform and many aren’t. If you happy with last three months then we are a championship side in 2022, I personally want progress.

As opposed to those of us who are hacked off at the doom and gloom merchants?

Apart from Pereira who's obviously the best man on the pitch by several country miles, Baggies have offered the square root of fuck all. As usual, Villa get to the edge of the opponants' box with ease, but that's about it. Otherwise, I think we're doing OK. Barkley seems to be trying at least. But he's just not very good. McGinn's been sloppy, and I think Watkins flatters to deceive. Traore's a pain in the arse... But we knew all that.

Yup, it's been pretty even despite them missing a few sitters. They have a striker that looks pretty useful too but other than that, not much between the two sides and certainly better than some of the rubbish served up this year.

But then, I was a Happy Clapper under O'Neil (so they tell me!)
They’ve offered the square root of fuck all, yet have created 3 glorious chances.
... Which they didn't take.
lucky us.
Yes. But they're still worse than we are.
that doesn't entitle us to the points though....
Of course not. And it's clear where our weaknesses are. I just don't think it's that bad. Certainly not compared to last season.

If we are going to be doing things like spending 30m on a player, which we have, and having huge amounts invested by the owners, we need to be unsentimental.

We're inconsistent and unpredictable, but the fact we've now put together a run of half a season of uninterrupted dog shit is deeply concerning. Much of the last 16 or 17 games has been every bit as bad as last season. That's really worrying.

I really wish I wasn’t fucked off and exchanging messages with Sexual Ealing but genuinely think It’s time dean was fucked off after season ends as he isn’t good enough to get a tune out of these. Five games at start of next season max, we can’t fuck about anymore.

Nah, replace him at the end of the season. Give the new bloke the transfer window to bring his own targets in.
Thank god you’re not making the decisions

I'd be OK with replacing Dean if it was with a manager nailed on to do better, rather than just feeding more coins into the 'manager merry-go-round' fruit machine.

Can't see any candidates though, and if we get one or two quality players in over the summer, I think we'll kick on next year.

Why would you pick an out of form player?

Rubbish from Traore there with AEM to his right free.

We simply have too many players who mess up making stupid decisions constantly in final third.

Simply have to improve that in the summer.

I would be happy if at the end of the season the board said a massive thank you to him for all he’s done, a nice payout and sent him on his way. We will be forever grateful for the chapter he wrote in our history. We are safe again, he helped with that and we can use that as a launching point for the next phase of what our owners want. Because I’m sure what they don’t want is this shit again next year with another £100m of their money spunked away.

We have some players who are never going to be good enough, but we have some others who plainly are good enough, and we know that because the manager got them playing for that period of 10-12 games where we picked up plenty of points and got some great results.

What we are seeing now is the same players failing to deliver for an extended period of time, and for me, that's the manager failing to get them producing. Missing Grealish is an absolute given, but whilst I see some players out there who aren't up to it, there are others who are just not getting managed very well.

I know there is a place for sentimentality but if Dean Smith wasn’t a Villa fan surely we would all be unified after the last 4 months in saying he should be fired.

We wouldn't.

Why? Because we have accepted our place as subservient or mediocre infinitum? I bet a top side with a more ambitious board would have canned him already.

Because he's hit all his targets.

You’re making my point beautifully. Thanks. Promotion because we became a Championship side. Stay up by the skin of our bollocks on the last day. Finish lower mid table in complete free fall since Christmas. If those are the targets we’ve dropped our standards and expectations as a club and fan base.
They're realistic targets which we're going to hit. Yes, it's shite football at times but look at the last few years, it makes perfect sense to me to build steadily instead of lunging from one catastrophe to another. I mean, life under Tim Sherwood was exciting but...

Yes. It seems we are rapidly regressing to last season's level - today clown car defence was back - and everyone is terrified that that is our actual level and the start of the season some never to be seen again flash in the pan.

West Brom deserve to be winning, because every time they do attack they can engineer a chance with ease. We find it so hard to even create half chances.
