We were average. But did enough thankfully. Well done Conor and thank fuck for Nyland. We haven’t said that much this season.

Got away with that, pretty poor.

Well done Nyland, good performance and great, crucial penalty save.

Every win we can somehow squeeze out with this bare bones defence is fine by me whichever way they come.

Wasn't great at times but a Boxing Day win and a clean sheet.

Just said in match thread but that reminds me of Boro away last season. We won that 1-0 ugly after indifferent run and went on a winning streak afterwards.

Lucky with the penalty but those sorts of things can change seasons.

No issue with winning ugly in our circumstances. Would sign up for another boring 0-1 at Preston.

2nd is still just about in play.

Used the match thread for updates on the game.  Sounded like we were a bit unconvincing.  Thing is, with this defence and without Grealish, winning games against decent (for-the-championship) teams isn't easy.  Credit to the manager and fit players for digging out this result.  Keeps us in contention. Just.

Also seems Leeds have got another late win.  What's theta now, 7 / 8 games won on the trot?  That is the kind of run we ned to go on to get into the top 2.

2nd is gone. Not just mathematically, but if the two teams in those spots are getting equalisers and winners in injury time and having half the game to play after the 90th minute, you should probably accept your play off spot.

Can't understand why people are worrying about Leeds. Unless we go on the mother of all runs, we are challenging for play offs at best now. To achieve even that, we need to bed in a new goalie  and hopefully, some other quality additions. I think we need to be patient and let this management team rebuild in this window and the next.

It obviously depends a lot on what happens in January and thereafter but based on current injury situation, league position and last 3 performances it’s not exactly a gimme.

The only positive might be that it shows that despite what was overall a below par performance, and with numerous injuries that we can still games against most teams in this league. We are lucky today that Swansea are mostly crap but that's 85% of this league.

I didn’t realise Swansea were that poor tbh. There was a period where they repeatedly got in behind us and blew their scoring opportunities. We didn’t have that much to do with the clean sheet as they did but still I’ll take the win.

We won today in no small part because of the cover he provided in front of the back 4.
Also well done Nyland, he showed today that he can leave his line and gather or clear which I think has been a major weakness.

Playing shit and winning isn't sustainable though, as the 2 years under Bruce showed. We'll all take the shit 1-0 win today, if we want to be a top flight side next year we'll need to improve on the last few games, which I think we will do.

And there is a big difference between playing well, losing in the game and coming back to draw and win vs playing shit and winning. The former builds immense confidence that no situation is dead until the game is over, and most of the time you are winning those games anyway. The latter as you say has very limited life and always comes to an end with an unfortunate bang.

We need to strengthen, improve and tighten up at the back because as much as I am happy to take 1-0 wins I don't think with our current defence we will be winning too many games by that scoreline.

I don't think Grealish dictates the way we play (Smith does that), what he does is take players away from McGinn, Bolasie etc. Giving them freedom to perform. At the moment everything we do is checked by the opposition, so we struggle to break them down. We need him back.

I think I parked in Cardiff today!

Negatives

The first half.

The midfield 3 were flat and our movement on and off the ball was glacial.

We stood off them and couldn't keep possession.

Positives

Despite how bad we were first half they only created one chance and we probably should have scored at least one with McGinn and Abrahams header.

Second half was improved. Much more threat as McGinn and Hourihane committed further forward, with the ball moving at tempo and us pressing better.

We ground it out but as an attacking force second half we were much better than them.

It was a silly penalty, but we'll done Nyland.

We can get away with it against the likes of Swansea and first half we did. 2nd half I think showed why we'll make the Play Offs.

3 points is all

The move to 4231 after 20nmins helped as mcginn was much closer to Abraham. Shame ohare is injured as he could play that role.

Good spell either side of half time and the goal was coming

With this run of fixtures, the good thing is we can win without playing well much more readily. It is odd that our home games are like basketball but we generally show good control away

Bree did well

I'd freshen it up a bit for Preston

One thing we did in the second half which we havent done for a few games was close the opposition down when they had the ball. It wasn't a great performance but it doesn't always need to be. Anyway, it was a good response from the Leeds defeat.

This wasn't the Villa we were admiring so much until the Stoke game. We seem to have lost the exciting attacking flair, or perhaps other teams are getting wise to us. That said, we were the better side today and had the better chances. Even before the penalty I was thinking that Nyland was probably our best player, and the save confirmed it. He must have been encouraged by the warm applause he got at the end.

That was mostly a load of shite.  Still, won't sniff at a 1-0 win, but we need too be much, much better than we have been of late.
I will take more shite wins with a clean sheet

Playing shit and winning isn't sustainable though, as the 2 years under Bruce showed. We'll all take the shit 1-0 win today, if we want to be a top flight side next year we'll need to improve on the last few games, which I think we will do.

Precisely, sustained performance will ultimately drive the results we need to go up.

I think the players need to be fitter.

On performances, I agree something has changed since West brom

You'd have to say grealish being absent is a massive factor. Especially as we just don't have a like for like alternative (tho as above, if we do play more of a 4231 ohare could come in when fit)

It must also be that teams have watched us and are more attuned to what we're trying to do

I think a bit of tiredness too perhaps?

3 points is all

The move to 4231 after 20nmins helped as mcginn was much closer to Abraham. Shame ohare is injured as he could play that role.

Good spell either side of half time and the goal was coming

With this run of fixtures, the good thing is we can win without playing well much more readily. It is odd that our home games are like basketball but we generally show good control away

Bree did well

I'd freshen it up a bit for Preston

Yes so good to listen to Dean explaining why and how he changed it.  Bruce would have just brought more strikers on

Or Chris Samba .....

Norwich and Leeds are living off last minute goals.

I still think the performance is what dictates things. For example Leeds got a last minute winner against us, but they fully deserved to win. They didn’t mug us and if they play like that every week they will go up and win many games at a canter.

Norwich won't last the pace, but they'll be top 6. Albion & Leeds for top 2. We'll be in the playoffs, but if we get the necessary re-inforcments there's an outside chance of top 2, but it will take a run of 10 or so wins on the bounce.

Villa guys, Villa.  Bugger off to 'other football' if Leeds are all you wish to discuss!!

Today, we still seem to take the wrong option at times and give the ball away too cheaply.  Nyland had a solid game and it feels good to get a clean sheet.  Hutton and Elmo had to cope with a lot of diagonal balls and coped ok.  Whelan is still absolute cack.  Hourihane scored but didn't seem to do too much more than that.  El Ghazi, wtf were you doing?  Bolasie was unpredictable.  Nice goal and I thought we were just about the better side overall.  Chester was better today.  Deserved win.  Had we have drawn both festive games, we may have been satisfied, therefore, I reckon we might be a point better off as it stands.  Good win, average performance, one day closer to the transfer window opening.  McGinn was great but now has 9 bookings for the season.

I thought we were pretty decent 2nd half and even Hourihane looked more likely as both he and McGinn got in advanced positions.

Not brilliant or close to our best, but our wingers and generally attacking play makes us too strong for most.

I didn’t realise Swansea were that poor tbh. There was a period where they repeatedly got in behind us and blew their scoring opportunities. We didn’t have that much to do with the clean sheet as they did but still I’ll take the win.

They lost 1-4 at home to Norwich recently WBA beat them 4 days later aswell.

In fairness Graham Potter playing a lot of kids atm so they are in transition and will probably be much stronger next season.

I thought Swansea would cause us more problems with two wingers and two centre forwards, when they made their substitutions, but they didn't really, until El Ghazi had a brain fart.

Just back, relieved at the win. Grateful to Nyland who recouped a couple of the points he's cost us this season.

The first half wasn't great at all; like Leeds they were playing lots of diagonal balls to the flanks, if not always as successsfully - surely we must cotton more quickly  on to teams doing that against us?

Also we were forced to pass back to Nyland so many times and he had no option but to kick long.

I thought Hutton was positionally poor although he set up the goal, and  Bolasie rarely gave him any help by tracking back.

Hourihane is a perplexing conundrum. He was fairly anonymous in the first half, better in the second, and scored the winner and is always a threat from a free kick or a shot from 25 yards. I just don't see the point in trying to play him in a more defensive role.

Great result! Well done Villa boys! It was important to stay in touch with top 6, ahead of January transfer window, when hopefully (with incomings) we can push on. Pleased with clean sheet and Nyland's performance. Great pen save. He made a good attempt vs stoke also. Pleased also for Bree.
Conor showed his worth again. Goals and assists that we're lucky enough to have, but I'm sure is the envy of other championship clubs. Keep up the good work Deano! VTID!

Fkn right we aint, three draws and three losses behind dirty leeds, no problem.

Just over half the season gone, a long way to go. Just need to sort our defence out and we can get auto. Look what Fulham did last season.
Fulham had an unbelievable run and still only finished 3rd. Our imbalanced squad means we can get to the play offs but no chance for automatic in my opinion. We are too far adrift.

Basically will take that. A clean sheet !
Wasn't greatest performance but a ground out win for the victory and a bit of luck/skill to save the pen.

Have to say Hourihane has such a knack for goals quite ridiculous.

And bolasie and el ghazi as front players who can get away from 3 or 4 players surrounding them in tight areas are incredibly skill full and better than half the premier league players for skill level.

Kodjia and Abrahams are not too bad either so can't think of more footy skilled attacking players in league.

Up the villa.

Enjoyed yesterday, both on and off the pitch.

Tight game, thought they were brighter and sharper than us, but didn't really cause us too many problems. Bree and Chester looked alright together. It seemed a single goal would win it and so it proved.

Great run and cross by TSC and excellent header by Conor. Atmosphere in the second half was much better (first half was like a morgue) and well done to Nyland. I'm still far from convinced, but he's done better in the last few games and obviously did well saving the pen from Bony.

Good to see almost all the players handing their shirts into the crowd at the end too.

it's always good if you can grind out a result when you arnt playing well especially if you have a defined pattern and system of play to fall back on which is what I believe Smith is trying to build

it's not so good when the grinding becomes the style of play which you fall back on

I'm really hoping this is the difference between now and what we've seen in the last few years

For me January is when I start to judge Smith, if he signs defenders then I'll be confident in his approach, but if he recalls Elphick and thinks that is enough then goes after attackers and midfielders then I'll have concerns.

The fact that he's already signed a keeper makes me think the 1st scenario is the one that's going to happen.

I'm sure he knows what he needs to do in order to sort out the shambles Bruce has left us in. We have a high quality GK coming in. A few additions defensively and we will be in far better shape.

Nor is playing sexy football sustainable, what we need is the ability to win with good football and also win ugly. Get to January and sign only defenders which will help in us achieving that.

it's always good if you can grind out a result when you arnt playing well especially if you have a defined pattern and system of play to fall back on which is what I believe Smith is trying to build

it's not so good when the grinding becomes the style of play which you fall back on

Still not really sure how much money is going to be available really, especially as we have already shelled out a decent amount of money on the keeper.  I think he deserves until the end of the season Bedford any judgement is passed.

Get Elphick back, send the keeper that must be blind (must be because how else is Nyland in instead of him) back then sign or loan a central defender then we'll have 2 starting centre backs and to back up centre backs. I'm not sure what else is needed as our attack doesn't need work on it.
