Yeah but so did the Red slime under Fergie for a decade or two and it didn’t hold them back. Unfortunately.

3 points is all

The move to 4231 after 20nmins helped as mcginn was much closer to Abraham. Shame ohare is injured as he could play that role.

Good spell either side of half time and the goal was coming

With this run of fixtures, the good thing is we can win without playing well much more readily. It is odd that our home games are like basketball but we generally show good control away

Bree did well

I'd freshen it up a bit for Preston

Yes so good to listen to Dean explaining why and how he changed it.  Bruce would have just brought more strikers on

Or Chris Samba .....

I still think the performance is what dictates things. For example Leeds got a last minute winner against us, but they fully deserved to win. They didn’t mug us and if they play like that every week they will go up and win many games at a canter.

Norwich won't last the pace, but they'll be top 6. Albion & Leeds for top 2. We'll be in the playoffs, but if we get the necessary re-inforcments there's an outside chance of top 2, but it will take a run of 10 or so wins on the bounce.

Villa guys, Villa.  Bugger off to 'other football' if Leeds are all you wish to discuss!!

Today, we still seem to take the wrong option at times and give the ball away too cheaply.  Nyland had a solid game and it feels good to get a clean sheet.  Hutton and Elmo had to cope with a lot of diagonal balls and coped ok.  Whelan is still absolute cack.  Hourihane scored but didn't seem to do too much more than that.  El Ghazi, wtf were you doing?  Bolasie was unpredictable.  Nice goal and I thought we were just about the better side overall.  Chester was better today.  Deserved win.  Had we have drawn both festive games, we may have been satisfied, therefore, I reckon we might be a point better off as it stands.  Good win, average performance, one day closer to the transfer window opening.  McGinn was great but now has 9 bookings for the season.

There's a reason Leeds, Norwich and the bitters are talked about a fair bit, and the likes of Wigan, Bolton and Rotherham aren't.

Anyone got the boxing day farts?

I have, mine started around 1 am this morning, I dropped one this morning so bad the cat looked at me in disgust and left the house in a hurry via the cat flap only to return 4 hours later.

I thought we were pretty decent 2nd half and even Hourihane looked more likely as both he and McGinn got in advanced positions.

Not brilliant or close to our best, but our wingers and generally attacking play makes us too strong for most.

There is a football thread for other teams as this is the Villa post match thread.  Merry Christmas, sorry if I offended anyone.

I have this feeling that we will be playing Small Heath or Sandwell Town in the play offs or maybe even both .Both keep winning
it's a distinct possibility - just imagine playing either in the play off final at Wembley ......makes me shudder even thinking about it

And post-match people are talking about the teams we need to catch if we want to finish top 2. Same as last season there'd be plenty of talk post-match about Cardiff and Fulham.

The least enjoyable watch of Smiths reign, but three very valuable points.

I didn’t realise Swansea were that poor tbh. There was a period where they repeatedly got in behind us and blew their scoring opportunities. We didn’t have that much to do with the clean sheet as they did but still I’ll take the win.

They lost 1-4 at home to Norwich recently WBA beat them 4 days later aswell.

In fairness Graham Potter playing a lot of kids atm so they are in transition and will probably be much stronger next season.
