Happy New Year one and all. What a wonderful way to start the year. After a dodgy first 15 it was excellent overall. Delighted for all of us and the team. Up to 5th, 5 points behind Derby in 2nd.
Will enjoy the highlights later
-
Some club finally got that thrashing we've been banging on about. :)
-
Whatever happened today, please Mr Bruce take this into the rest of the season.
Fantastic performance.
-
Missed Whelan today and it showed. Hope he's back ASAP.
-
Won every game this year without conceding.
-
Maybe this will stop the mad hysteria! 😁

Bruce in
-
Bet there's a bit of hysteria amongst the fan-base right now...
-
Excellent, more of that please.
-
Didn't see that coming after the opening 15 or so. We were excellent after that and if anything 5-0 flattered Brizzle.
Fun fact. We scored as many goals today as sha have scored in the last 2 months.
-
That starting XI does not have a goal in it let alone a win. RHM, Davis and O'Hare all on the bench tells you everything about Bruce. Not that we need telling.
and, we have the lowest goals-scored of all the teams in the top 8 ... marvellous.
No longer is this the case!!
-
Does this make us better than Manchester United?
-
Shut me right up. Well done Bruce & team. I mean, wow.
-
Brilliant. Just booked my train tickets for Burton game, can't wait. Shame we don't play in the league again for two weeks.
-
Fuck this second nonsense, that's loser talk
Dogheads, we're coming for ya.
-
Missed Whelan today and it showed. Hope he's back ASAP.
Agree made that point on the Match Thread, mobility and vision especially
-
If you look at the four fixtures going into Christmas I would’ve been very pleased with 7 points. So what crisis?!
-
Loved it,loved it,loved it.
-
Supersonic!
Thanks Villa; and a very happy New Year to one & all. Marvellous scenes.
-
Hello 2018, fantastic. Hopefully the goals for Scotty and Bjarni will boost their confidence. Well done Bruce like that every week please.
-
i was posting on AVTV thread like a twat
i thought Jack had turned into Messi
Hutton should have been left back years ago
good to see Whelan not slowing us down as we had so much more tempo
Great boost for hogan ( and Bjork )
great day ,,oh AVTV is shite
-

We fucked up v Millwall just before
-
Well done Villa, what a way to start the New Year. Well done Steve Bruce as well, substitutions worked out well.
-
That was the best game I've seen for a very long time, not just because we scored five goals, mainly because we worked as a team and put in a real shift on and off the ball. We've set a very high standard to follow for the new year, enjoy this while it lasts.
-
I have no words for this. What a remarkable performance that was.
-
Happy New Year you f***ing beauties.
That goal difference may be important come May too.
-
Bonnie Langford can count herself lucky.
-
I am really pleased for everyone who went down the game today. There's nothing like watching the Villa comprehensively spank the opposition.
-
Finally taking hold of a game and giving someone a tonking. About time the players showed what they are capable of going forward. Doing it more often would be nice.
-
10 goal GD swing between us and Bristol City today
-
I certainly never saw that coming.
-
Who got man of the match? There were about six players I couldn't put a rizla between.
-
Jack was absolutely superb just making things tick in the middle. He’s a lovely player to watch in full flow.
If nothing else Bruce should take from this we just do not need to hoof it at all. Even when Davis is playing. We have enough good football players to really dominate possession and go at teams ON THE GROUND!! No more hopeless punts please Steve!!!
-
Anyone know the attendance please?

Not just "someone" either. A team pushing for promotion.
-
Anyone know the attendance please?
32.5k according to beeb

The last time the Villa won a promotion they had a 5-0 home win on the New Year's Day of a year ending in 8. Just saying...

-
Great result.
Snodgrass or Grealish MoM. Hutton, Hogan, Adomah all had great games.
We chased everything and seemed to win every tackle.
That has been coming, i'm loving this new 2018 football.
I wore my new Under Armour Villa training top i got for Xmas for the first time today, better wear it every match now.

Thank you! Cracking result. More of the same please.
-
Well well well, wasn't expecting that. Good to hear that Jack played well and Hogan got a goal. It's a funny old game.
-
Delighted with the result. Never doubted we had the talent and big enough squad to dominate this league. More please.
-
We’re gonna give someone a real thrashing soon.
-
It could have been more. Utv
-
I'm liking 2018 so far!
-
Of course a second-half like that leads to the inevitable question...why can't we play like that all of the time ?
-
Great stuff, listening on Talksport 2 sounded as if we played some really good football. Well done lads.
The Agnew effect?
-
Well didn't see that coming after the last few games
-
Brizzle had lost one away game before today. Somewhat strangely it was away at sha.
-
Yes. Yes. Yes.
-
‘I suppose it’s crisis over this week is it? The hysteria is abdolu’ly ridi’ulous. I’m delighted for them. The fans are cnuts like.’
-
Any highlights on Channel 5 or Sky tonight?
-
I've just remembered I work with a Bristol City supporter.
-
Highlights, not "highlights" (http://www.skysports.com/football/a-villa-vs-bristol-c/374919)
-
We are being described as "Rampant Aston Villa" on the beeb website, i like the sound of that.
-
Please dont screw up the post match interview Bruce. Just take the praise with some grace man.
-
Excellent. Put to bed ‘we don’t beat the teams at the top’. Now push on FFS!
-
I could crush a grape.
-
Missed it due to hangover from last night! Some great goals and build-up play from the "Highlights"
-
Any highlights on Channel 5 or Sky tonight?
Channel 5 @ 23:50pm

Great performance and proper footballing goals. Level has been set now.

Go to the Sky Sports website. Two minutes of pure magic.

Indeed enjoyed that. I don't expect that every week especially against team like Brizzle who want to play and attack but I expect us to try and do that every week and dispense with HoofBruceBall

I see a love toy marketing tie-up in the offing

Well, wasn't that enjoyable?

And this is all anyone asks for. We were superb today and all the attacking talent we had showed that we can dominate our way to victory. For mew it seemed like Bruce sent us out as he normally does but then after 10-15 minutes there was an epiphany that we weren't doing anything like what we wanted and either Bruce, the players, or a combination of both decided that they didn't want to fail wondering if they could've done something else.
We won't score 5 every game, that's obvious, but we should have our fair share of being on top and making teams react to us, for the last year we've been too passive far too often.
-
Lovely stuff to watch.
-
Well the office in Brizzol gonna be interesting tomorrow.
Great score, much better, just keep it going...
-
Didn't see that coming after the opening 15 or so. We were excellent after that and if anything 5-0 flattered Brizzle.
Fun fact. We scored as many goals today as sha have scored in the last 2 months.
True DAT.
Brizzle looked impressive then ran out of steam. Deflated like a punctured balloon.
Good to see Jack has learned to ride tackles and saw Baker trying to reduce his efficiency.
Hutton and Thor combo was most pleasing.
Bruce is a much maligned genius, obvs.
-
I posted this after we lost to Derby:
A season that could fizzle could out in the next few weeks.
No we will win our next game.
We will be five points off autos by the new Year, and will close that gap when our injured players come back.
It's not that bad guys.
We are doing OK.
We will go up. Please believe it.
Five points off 8)
We will go up just stay positive 8)
-
It's a game of fine margins. Had they converted that massive chance early in the second half who knows how the game would have played out. But they fucked it up and we went on to bury them.
-
Marvellous performance and Jack Grealish was fuckin’ immense.
-
Just got back after taking a last-minute decision to go. I thought we were in for another Millwall at best after the first fifteen minutes but after scoring the kind of goal that Hogan's in this team to score we took control. Jack MOTM for me with Albert and Hutton running him close. Brilliant run from him for the third. We need to hear that "big day out" chant a lot more between now and the end of the season!
-
Baker hasnt changed, committed, but rash challenges, crap distribution and beaten in the air by someone half his size.
-

Indeed. I was never bothered about him leaving and he was never good enough for us in the first place. Didn’t understand the booing though. Maybe it was because of the yellow card but other than that he always tried his best at Villa and never really took the piss.
-
Wow what a score to wake up to😊 well done Villa boys and Bruce. Pleased for Scotty.

Hysteria is underrated.
Not really, it sold about 25m copies.
-
Great win, and great to end this little run of fixtures back in 5th.
You never know, it could be the difference between a player from the top flight joining us or not. At the start of the season, I'm sure part of the hard sell to Terry, Snodgrass and whoever is that we'd be aiming to go up. Whilst we would still have argued that even if we were outside the play off spots, it's easier to do that from where we are now, rather than 8th place.
And booing Beckenbaker is idiotic. Gave his all whilst he played for us and only left when it looked like he wouldn't get a run of games. Which at his age, he couldn't go through again.
It's not as if he started getting too big for his boots and bailed to play Champions League football or some such bobbins.
-
Great win that sends a message throughout the tin pot division we are in. Huge back to back wins and right back in the fight for second place. Hogan off the mark could be key for the rest of the season. Bruce's persistence with Snodgrass has been justified. Swapping Adamoah for Traore up there getting Carew for Baros.
-
We were amazing.
Bring on the second half of the season.
-
Just got back in after being at the game earlier. Slow start, but picked up after we scored the first and then took off after the second. I have to say that Jack Grealish put in the kind of performance we all hope to see from him and really ran the game in a deeper midfield role. Said in the thread before the game that having Jedinak in the defensive midfield role means we don't break on teams, but Grealish linked it really well today.
Got to say I'm pleased for Bjarnason, Elphick and a Hogan who all made good contributions tonight. They have all struggled since coming here, but did well tonight. To see a number of youngsters on the pitch in the closing stages was really encouraging and they also did well.
Whether we can build on it remains to be seen, but a very encouraging performance.
-

Jack was absolutely magnificent today.

I think most of the booing was down to his attempt to fuck Super Jack up and reduce his efficiency.
-
Now that's what I call a great evening out. Villa Park under floodlights, flames and fireworks before the game, dishing out a thrashing playing some great stuff, and 5 quality goals. Yes we were poor for the first 15 minutes, and if they'd scored that one straight after half time things would have been different, but that was a superb performance by the whole team. Grealish MOTM for me. And fair play to Snodgrass and Bjarnason - I've been among their biggest critics but they both played very well. Mmmm, humble pie.
-

Agreed. He was always very popular here. It was purely the challenge, which could easily have been a red, that provoked the hostility
-
Fantastic! Great stuff Villa! Play a bit of football and I can take any result. With the players we have though, playing a bit of football can be effective. I hope we can keep this momentum going now.
-
Match was ok but I was feckin freezing.
-
Superb. Every single one of the team was great tonight. Let’s push on now Villa.
-
Hysteria is underrated.

Hand wringers, keep on hand wringing.
60 more points to play for. Players to come back from sickness and injuries.
Game on.

Fair enough - compared to the high number of professional piss taking clowns he had to endure when he was supposed to be learning from them I don't mind him. Never thought him anywhere near good enough for top league but did very well last season overall.
-
Grealish was almost unplayable today. Admittedly they stood off a fair amount, a bit like when we play Ryan Woods, but Jack is more skilful and he brought out the creativity we've been craving.
After the first 20 minutes had passed, that was the best we'd played under Bruce. Let's hope it's not a blip. I'd play Hogan again on Saturday as getting the goal transformed him. He wasn't necessarily brilliant but looked more like the player we hoped we'd signed.
-
Hutton is without doubt our best left back.
Elphick put in another solid performance.
Impressed with Hourihane running and effort.
Even Snodgrass looked like the player we hoped we had signed.
Hogan scored, my god.
Every one played thier part today and Jack was superb.
-
Thanks for cheering me up Villa on the first day back at work. Keep it going please.
-
Best things about today were the work rate and the speed in which we pressed the opposition and moved the ball.
Today was a glimpse of what we could be. Let’s hope it continues.
-
Looks like Jack ran the show. I hope this the corner and we're about to show the league what a big club can do.
-
I don't think there is any humble pie needed. Bjarnason and Snodgrass have been poor, but both played well today and Grealish took a game by the scruff of the neck for the first time since 2015. It was great to watch and highly enjoyable. More of the same now for the rest of the season, otherwise those frustrations will surface again.
-
Yes Baker wasn't really noticed at the start (I got in 5 minutes before the start so don't know if he was applauded when his name was read out in the team news) but booing started when he tried to nobble Grealish in two with one of his reducers.
It reminded me of the first game Young came back to play against us. Got applauded at the start then did a really bad tackle and was booed for the rest of the game.

Takes me back to 1988 when we beat Hull City on New Years Day 5-0
We got promoted that year as well.
-
The absence of Whelan allowed/forced Jack & Conor to take more control of the game. Hopefully he’ll only play again in cup games or if Jedi needs a rest
-

I was thinking exactly the same myself. Only disappointing aspect of the day was not finding out the Bartons was shut until I got there.
-
An euphoria enducing assault on the remainder of the season leading to automatic promotion and a return to the riches of the PL. Sorted.
-
Lovely back heel by Beckenbaker to set up the fifth
-
Up the bloody villa!!!! What a performance today, every player worked there socks off and played brilliantly. Can't remember the last time we played so well. With the players coming back and some better fixtures to come things are certainly looking better. Bring on the rest of the season!!!!
-
Jack was absolutely magnificent today.
He didn’t run today. He glided. He makes it look very easy when he gets going. And he is so comfortable on the ball. We need to get promoted because if he plays like that he’ll be a highly sought after player in the summer by the likes of Man City where that ability is cherished.
-
Bjarnason's finish was nice.
Hogan's header reminded me of Dean Saunders' header at Sheffield Wednesday in 1995. One of the best headed goals I've ever seen.
-
Hogan's goal was a fantastic header and Thor showed he can add value.
-
Brilliant, probably the best performance since the semi final and Jack today played like he did in that match, class. Of all the players we have bought in this season, I reckon, apart from Whelan, Snodgrass has been the most disappointing, but today he was superb. Terry back soon all good news.
Like a former great England striker once said, it's a funny old game.
-
Hogan's goal was a fantastic header and Thor showed he can add value.
He’s an inside left midfielder and has an uncanny knack of getting into good positions. He’s certainly not a winger. I was happy for him today because he doesn’t have a lot of fans. Much down to him but certainly in part positional circumstance.
The truth is when we play like that every player grows an inch and Barney is no different.
-
Hogan's goal was a fantastic header and Thor showed he can add value.
His header that the keeper saved for the second goal was good as well. I thought he attacked the near post well all game.
-
Better than reading, Norwich, Preston. And still have the kodj, terry and green to come back into contention. For once everything bar the ref who was poor went our way
-

The ref did allow the game to go on even though Jack Grealish was being pulled back for thirty of the sixty yards he ran with the ball in the build up for the third goal.
-
What a pass from Hutton for Bjarnadon’s goal.
-
What a pass from Hutton for Bjarnadon’s goal.
Hutton is my favourite player by a mile
-
A fantastic performance..i don't think Jedinak's performance shouldn't go unnoticed..an absolute rock in front of the back 4.
-
I didn't know if I was dreaming the way it just kept on getting better. Someone will need to peel me down from the ceiling at the end of the night!
-
Lovely back heel by Beckenbaker to set up the fifth
It was Baker's best game for the Villa!!
-
From the Boro match thread
Snodgrass is useless.
What do I know? Keeping chucking the egg on my face Villa! :D :D :D
-
Half my prediction was right. Said we would ‘click’ and that we did. Jack was unplayable.
-
Lovely back heel by Beckenbaker to set up the fifth
It was Baker's best game for the Villa!!
He’s very overrated Ad@m. He’s a decent player at this level but no more than that. He was pulled out of position all game and how does little Hogan our jump him. I like the guy but from a talent standpoint he’s not a huge miss.

Maybe my post was misinterpreted.
I always thought he was bang average, so it was nice to see him playing for the opposition. His passing certainly hasn't improved since he left the Villa - he made more passes to Villa players tonight than he ever did in a Villa shirt.
-
Just got back, great performance after a poor 15 minutes. Great attacking football. Hogans goal was class & nice to see some good substitutions. UTV.

No I understood it and completely agree. I never understood the fuss over him. Yes agree bang average and at 26 he’s not going to get any better. So I’m glad he’s getting regular football but I’m equally glad it’s not for us.
-
Really didn't fancy us today and wasn't looking forward to the drive after a heavy night. Bruce was giving Hogan hell after about 15 mins for his positioning. Seemed to the trick! Enjoyed that as much as the Sunderland 6-1 in lamberks era. HNY all villans
-
Just got back. It makes all the travel worthwhile when we stick 5 past any team. I have to get up at five for work but couldn't care less!
-
Disagree entirely.
We looked a mess defensively last season until he came in and slotted in alongside Chester, pretty much from his first game back v Reading away. That was the catalyst for our decent run. His form was good enough that many (possibly the majority on here) seen the signing of Terry as unnecessary at the time (I'm still not entirely convinced that was our best use of £60k per week, considering our shortcomings in other areas, but that's by the bye).
His distribution has always been a bit meh, but with something approximating coaching he might have been able to boost that up to at least competent.
He had a Cahill tonight, but his form for Brizzle has been decent this season by all accounts.
-

Agree with all of that. What a difference two wins has made, I was about to jump off the bridge after Brentford.
-
My biggest problem with selling Baker was that it meant there was no back-up for Terry and Chester. By the sound of things though, Elphick might just becoming the player Bournemouth fans led us to believe he was. Good to see others starting to look the part too like Hogan, Snodgrass and Barney.
Adomah hasn't scored for a few games but his assists tally must be mounting up. Some lovely crosses from him lately.
-
Grealish was superb, comfortable on the ball coupled with a willingness to work his socks off as he showed tonight is what we have been missing. If he stays injury free he will rip up this league.
Hutton and Adomah stood out also. In fact they all played well. More than anything though tonight sent out a statement to the rest that we mean business.
-
The first twenty minutes, I thought we were awful, we looked like we had spent the xmas break eating and drinking. Then we score and what a change. Confidence running through the team, we looked lively and like we were going for the jugular.
Grealish was absolutely unplayable tonight. What he needs is a run of 6-10 games in that position, give him a chance to establish himself and not dump him out the team the first time he struggles. We saw tonight what he is capable of.
Other shout outs - Hourihane who works so hard and covers so much grass, Snodgrass, Hutton (who I think had one of the best games I've ever seen him have for us), and Hogan - you could see how happy the others were for him when he scored.
A great way to start the new year.
-
Disagree entirely.
He’s a lump, brave and committed but almost entirely lacking in skill and composure.
We were great today once the first went in there was a noticeable boost in confidence throughout the team. Like many I am sure, it was an effort to drag myself out today through a New Years alcohol fog and for once it was rewarded. I have a feeling that the significance of this result might be huge in terms of what it says to other clubs as as well as our own self belief.
-

No way to talk about Jack Grealish, Chris.
-
Listened to the game on the wireless. Sounded great. Nice to hear Jack back at his best. Please keep Whelan out.
Only Everton had a bigger crowd.
-
Due to work exiling me to darkest Wales I had to miss this game and my dad won’t go on his own missed it too. I am absolutely gutted 😥

The key thing is that we don't panic if a game isn't going our way and revert to 10 behind the ball and hogan 40 yards away. The build-up in pressure agianst Bruce always coincides with the displays where we start focusing on not losing, it might be cocky but we really should be better than that and today is the proof, that's the higher end of what we should expect but we need more games on that end of the scale rather than the millwall end.
-
In theory we should do better in the second half of the season, on the basis that most of our games against the top sides have been away and we still have a lot of them to play at home (Wolves, Derby, Cardiff, Leeds, Preston). If we start getting players back from injury without losing others and we respond positively to the pressure that being at the business end of the season brings, it will be interesting to see if we can do it this year.
-

He was in a different class tonight and it was interesting to see him play in a deeper midfield role.
-
A fantastic result! Very proud of my team tonight. Pleased with Hogan scoring (in fact it's great to have a striker score a goal). Great contributions from the whole team and I'm glad Snoddy is finally coming good. I don't expect to win every game (and certainly not 5-0), but I do expect that we give it a go and try to entertain and dominate occasionally. Today was a great example and should be the standard we try to aim for every game. We tanked Norwich earlier in the season and then started with 3 centre backs in our next game. Having taken a huge step forwards tonight, we need to ensure we keep progressing with the brand of positive, exciting football, that saw off Bristol. Over to you Bruce to keep this momentum going!
-
Hogans header was inch perfect and he almost repeated it with the keeper at full stretch. He is a natural finisher we just haven't been playing to his strengths.
-
Only seen the goals. How was Hogan in open play, did he link up better once he’d had a confidence boost from the goal, or take people on? Having never noticed him for Brentford, and only seen him out of sorts for us, I still don’t really know what kind of player he is.

Superb performance. Great to hear that Grealish had a dominant game, let's hope he has his swagger back.
I am so pleased for Scott Hogan. Hew has taken a lot of stick (some of it quite rightly) but has kept his head down and today did the business. I would love it if he started knocking them in for fun like he did at Brentford.
-
That was fun. Key thing for me is that we played like a team that knew their jobs. We pressed from the top as a team and worked harder than they did. Do that and you will win more games. Jack was a class apart. Delighted for Hogan and Shoddy. They were all great especially the defence where Sam never had a save to make.
-
A few pluses from last night. Everyone played well but the stand out's were Grealish who was immense, Snodgrass who probably had his best game for us, Hutton who oddly is better at left back than in his normal position, Hogan who's first goal was as good a header as I've seen in a while but Jedinak for me makes the difference when he plays that role. He needs to stay there in place of Whelan.
-
Whilst a win is welcome we should remember they had a poor second choice keeper in goal after their first choice was red carded against wolves on Saturday.

Absolutely, it is probably the only reason we won and I am sure you will show similar consideration to any side with important players unavailable, such as their best centre half plus their top scorer from last season.

Fuck me I thought we obviously did well to score 5. Another shit performance😥
-
You're fooling yourself, mate. We were just desperately lucky.
If Bristol City had a completely changed first team, let's say a combination of the best players from Man City, Barcelona and Paris St Germain, it would have been a different story.
Lucky, lucky, Villa.
-
Agreed. This negative Bruceball is getting on my tits now.
-
Maybe this will stop the mad hysteria! 😁
It's just one match. Consistency of this performance is required for the rest of the season
-
Only bought the tickets on the day but excellent game - my 6 year old loved it and kept going on about Grealish and still is this morning - wants a poster. The first 15 or 20 minutes were woeful but we didn't really look back although it was fortunate they didn't bury their chance right after half time to bring it back to 2-1.
It's nice to go to VP and feel a bit of optimism and we need it - first 15 mins all you could hear were Bristol fans "is this a library" "your support is fucking shit" etc etc. Makes me realise how beaten down we've become over the years - so used to disappointment and poor performances. I really hope the wider management team at Villa get this and realise that with a bit of positive attacking football it doesn't take much to galvanise the fans. Putting up posters talking about "pride" achieves fuck all unless we see it on the pitch from the players.
Hopefully this is the season turning point and we can push on but great result - even a couple of villa fans in the Chinese takeaway on the way home were asking about the game when they saw our scarves. This is the thing about Villa - so many people support us and would come if the football was positive.
-
Only seen the goals. How was Hogan in open play, did he link up better once he’d had a confidence boost from the goal, or take people on? Having never noticed him for Brentford, and only seen him out of sorts for us, I still don’t really know what kind of player he is.
Very lively, constantly on the shoulder of the last man and making runs the midfield were too slow to spot.
We obviously made a conscious tactical decision to attack down the wings and I'm not going to criticise that given the scoreline but it did generally lead to the midfield only looking sideways for a pass. Had they looked forward Hogan was finding loads of space which is hardly a surprise up against an incredibly pedestrian Nathan Baker who we all know is very prone to switching off positionally.

Just not getting too carried away after a good result. If we’re going to push until the end of the season we need to get a striker in. Hogans header was our first goal by a striker since Kodjias penalty in September!

Any highlights anywhere for those of us not around?

There are some earlier in the thread and there will be extended ones on YouTube later, just search the fixture and scoreline.
-
I don't think we should read anything into it being their reserve keeper, it was just a very good performance against a side that looked tired and we took advantage. That's just what we should be doing, having a squad with the depth and quality we do is only a benefit if you use it, why we're using it is a different matter but the simple fact is that we can afford to have 8-9 injured players and still be a very strong side.
-
Lovely back heel by Beckenbaker to set up the fifth
It was Baker's best game for the Villa!!
He’s very overrated Ad@m. He’s a decent player at this level but no more than that. He was pulled out of position all game and how does little Hogan our jump him. I like the guy but from a talent standpoint he’s not a huge miss.
Maybe my post was misinterpreted.
I always thought he was bang average, so it was nice to see him playing for the opposition. His passing certainly hasn't improved since he left the Villa - he made more passes to Villa players tonight than he ever did in a Villa shirt.
No I understood it and completely agree. I never understood the fuss over him. Yes agree bang average and at 26 he’s not going to get any better. So I’m glad he’s getting regular football but I’m equally glad it’s not for us.
I'm a bit confused I'm reading Baker is a good championship player, Baker is a decent player at this level. Have I missed something are we playing Cup football every week where we are actually a Premier League team or are we at the level where people are saying Baker is good at. Let's not rewrite history here Baker was a member of what was one of the best defences last season so let's not try and make out as if we were leaking goals constantly last season.
Anyway in other news fantastic result let's hope we can really push on from here.
-
Brilliant performance by us everything clicked for us I thought Jack was our motm.

-
Following on from my sarcastic post about Baker's back heel. I forgot to mention the deliberate one from Chester in the build up for the second goal. A nice piece of skill from a defender.
Also, Flint and Taylor combining to miss an open goal was right up there with when Hogan cleared off the opposition's line earlier in the season
-
4-1-4-1 suited us.
The midfield were ten yards higher up and we just looked balanced. An indifferent start where not a lot happened for 20 minutes, but once the first went in, we were excellent.
Grealish bossed them, while Hourihane and the wide men were higher up and able to put them under.
Their change of formation was foolhardy and we found acres of space. We should have scored 7 or 8. Such a one sided 70 minutes and a joy to watch.
-
The pleasing thing for me is that we humped a team in the top 3 who were on a much better run than us. The defeat against Wolves was their first in 7 and included a win against Man U. The tiredness thing is a red herring as well. You can guarantee if Bristol had won, that it would be Bruce moaning about the fixture list and Johnson saying nothing. After a 5-0 win, I bet nobody is feeling tired in the Villa camp this morning.
-

Indeed.
I don't have any problem with people criticising Bruce (and this is basically having a pop by taking the polish off last night) but it is absolutely unfair to then not give him his due when he gets it resoundingly right like he did last night.
All this "yeah but they had someone out injured / it's a long way to travel from Bristol / the stars weren't aligned for them" stuff is a bit sad.

Aye considering, bar one player, it was the same team that beat Boro 2 days earlier I'm not sure why we were able to run riot, yet they were all so sleepy tired that they were playing in their PJs.
Could be they're just not very good and on a roll, who have been found out by two much better sides in two days. Seems more likely to me.

Are we witnessing to early fruits of the ´Steve Agnew effect ´?. The team certainly seems to be going in a different direction since he arrived a few weeks ago...........Godzvilla!
-
I very pleased with this win. Great for Snodgrass and Hogan and BB in particular.
I think Steve Agnew coming into the club has had an impacted if results are anything to go by.
Once the first goal went in villa seemed a more positive lodge.
Is there any coincidence too that without Whelan villa moving forward a lot more.

Bruce had already had a moan about having to play 'em yesterday. For once, it's great to see his negative comment(s) had no detrimental effect on his tactical plan & the ensuing (brilliant) team performance. May he and the players continue to do the business.

That's entirely possible Ads. More pertinently, why did we look so abject against Brentford, then extremely mediocre against Boro, but then blow Bristol City completely and utterly out of the water and look like the best team by a country mile in the Championship? I wouldn't expect to win by that margin every week, but if we'd at least try to play like that every week, I'd never have a bad word to say about Bruce again. Yesterday was absolutely terrific football, no question at all.

“For once”?
We’re 5 points off an automatic spot not 5 points from the bottom you know.
-
Hopefully SB won't start Whelan for a while now, his first instinct is to turn towards his goal or sideways after winning possession. You don't have to be a great passer to play that position, just need to be able to play short passes forward, which Jedi can do and with Jack deeper that can benefit the team. UTV.

Yes, Luke Steele is an experienced keeper and was first choice at Panathinaikos not long ago, so is not some rookie. The second goal was the only one where he may have done a bit better.

Million dollar question that. Shows what we can do and lead to me thinking why haven't we seen that before?
I thought Boro was more a good away performance, second half at least, against Pulis and his tedious crew. That said, it is difficult to fathom how we can click and go from plodding along for 20 minutes and suddenly look as good as we did.
I certainly think the formation helped and it is not a coincidence to me that Whelan being out the side and Jedinak being the holding player allowing four midfielders to attack, saw us play significantly better than Derby, Milwall, Sheffield United, Brentford.
-
I thought he made a fine save to deny Hogan the second goal and was pretty steady all through the game. I didn’t know he wasn’t the first choice keeper and wouldn’t have guessed so given his performance.
-
Their keeper didn't put a foot wrong.
-
Their keeper didn't put a foot wrong.
Exactly. It’s nonsense.

The cameos by O'Hare and RHM were very good too. I hope both get a run out against Peterborough.

Hepburn-Murphy looks well up for the battle.

We are indeed, but I haven't seen a performance that good since SB came in. Hopefully a significant corner has now been well & truly turned. :)

Whilst a win is welcome we should remember they had a poor second choice keeper in goal after their first choice was red carded against wolves on Saturday.
Good point, with them having a shot cleared off the line I think we should class this as a 1-0 defeat as their first choice keeper would obviously have saved all those efforts, especially the one scored by our third or fourth choice striker. Bruce out.

Do we get a consolation goal because we had to play our third or fouth choice central defender?

People scrabbling around for reasons why not to celebrate a 5-0 win, or acknowledge it as an achievement, must be a real joy to be around.

A keeper who had no chance with any of the goals and made a brilliant save from Hogan before the rebound to Snodgrass

Hogan actually had some decent runs, link up play was better so easily his best game for us.

Good to hear mate. I have been concerned about how the past few years have impacted on our fans, particularly the young ones.
-
I couldn't give a flying fcuk if they put Lionel Blair in goal. We won 5-0, and that's all that matters.

He does and he is a bit bigger than I remembered. Gave Baker and Flint a tough time when he came on.
-

Is that you Franksy?

After Brentford I think Bruce must have had a word with his senior pros and said, look Im staring down the barrel here if you lot dont pick up. Boro was a great result.
Elphick clicking into gear making us a bit more solid and dont miss Terry so much and having to play Jendinak there.
Hutton clicking at left back.
Snodgrass coming into form
Pedestrian Whelan dropped (injured?)
Onomah given a rest
Hogan up top and Agnew coaching the players to play to his strengths
Jack....oh....Jack simply superb. My kids have a new hero
Jedinak back in his best position
Much better formation and looked better balanced. Hourihane got forward more.
Hooray!
Considering the opposition we blew them away and a fabulous result. Hope he starts all the U23's v Posh on Sat so they are all fresh for Forest.
-
Johnstone - Will not have an easier game
Hutton - limited with his left foot of course but gives us a lot more down the left hand side - please leave in SB
Elphick - All I can say is fair fecking play mate - never part of the plans and even behind Samba in pecking order but last 2 games has been immense - he is more of a Captain than any other player but JT - always shouting and pointing - really, really good performance.
Chester - Mr Cool - I also liked that when I kicked off a little after a tackle he was straight in and grabbed the Bristol tosser doing the shoving
Elmo - more effective going forward in first half but rock steady all game - probably our best RB
Jedinak - was immense without leaving a circle of about 20 metres diameter - mopped up everything in the middle meaning they could only try to go round the wing route where they also got little joy
Grealish - MOTM by a country mile - so much energy and demanding the ball at every opportunity - only thing missing was a goal - was absolutely shagged at 80 mins
Snodgrass - I have been a huge critic but tonight he worked his balls off - he worked both LB's they used and varied the runs so much they had no idea where the treat was coming from. I think the guy with the blond highlighted afro will need to be unwound as he was turned inside out.
Adomah - classic wing play and they were afraid to leave him alone at any point which created space elsewhere - 2 beautiful crosses for the goals
Hourihanne - He is so much better when receiving the ball facing forward - with Whelan (who I do like) he is always getting it either behind him or in a position to have to control it first and that slows the play. Full of energy and deserved the goal
Hogan - what a difference a bit of confidence makes - superb headers and clever runs all night.
BB - not bad for a first touch of the ball - I do think there is a player in there in the right position, we just have to find out where it is
O'Hara - busy, aggressive, switched on - really hope to see him for full game on Saturday as he is really promising
RHM - little pocket rocket - it was like an elephant being scared of a mouse when he came on - Baker and the other lumps did not know what to do with him - again hope to see a full 90 on Saturday.
and as we were leaving
Lansbury / Terry / Green all on the pitch training - might be a few surprises on saturday ;)

One would hope that Bruce has now seen the error of his ways when it comes to picking Jedinak and Whelan as a central midfield pairing. I'm happy not to mention it again if he doesn't.
-
And how poor was baker yesterday lucky to stay on the pitch. So much for no insight in getting rid
-
Complete agree with Hookeysmiths comments on Hourihane.
It is so frustrating to see him constantly playing with his back to goal and knocking short simple balls when he is so dynamic and influential when going forward and facing up to the opposition.
I’m not knocking him, I guess he is playing to instructions but I hope he is not being stifled.
-

Lansbury / Terry / Green all on the pitch training - might be a few surprises on saturday ;)
Bruce stated in his post match interview on WM last night that Green would be playing on Saturday. It might be worth giving Elphick some more playing time on Saturday especially if Terry also plays and is going to come back into the side going forward, but apart from him we could field a completely different team from last night:
Steer
De Laet Elphick Terry Taylor
Whelan
Green Lansbury Bjarnason O'Hare
Hepburn-Murphy
Might be tempted to give Hogan another game to see if he can get in the goals again and boost his confidence further.

The fact that this is our spare team is ridiculous (in a good way)

I think Hogan should start alongside Hepburn-Murphy. All strikers want the next game after they've scored.

Grealish - best game since the FA semi final.
Different class to most around him.

He had a poor game no doubt, but he's still a key part of a team that are in the play off positions, and above us.

Baker is what he is, a limited but effective stopper. Like most players, if you can play him to his strengths and mask his drawbacks hell do well, but I think this is his level.

Agree with that except I'd put in Bree for De Laet and Doyle Hayes for Bjarnason.

Baker was whole hearted and half decent for us. But the way he used to steam in I was never sure if he was going to get the ball, get the man and a booking or sending off or get injured. On a number of occasions I closed my eyes he made me so nervous.

Until his goal I thought even though he worked hard he was our least effective performer. I do like him though and would like him more if he got hold of a game and dictated. He has it in him but I think he's one where the pressure of playing for a big club affects his game. If it is the case where he is being asked to play in a style that stifiles his ability then it's a complete waste.

He wont be a key part of the team when he eventually gets injured.

I've just seen that Lee Johnson showed his class after the game when he whined: "It was interesting to hear the Villa fans mocking us...".
I take it he failed to hear the 'Library' chant & 'shhhhhhhh' business the Brizzle support came out with early doors? What a precious little soul. ::)

Ahhhhhhhh, I missed that wee chestnut. Bless.

Made me laugh when they were slagging off Hogan for being a waste of money and always offside, just before he scored.

'Just been having a browse on a Brizzle forum - and somebody's taken it upon themself to start a thread about our support. It appears that a few folk are a tad bitter about getting gubbed 5-0 on their big day out...

I looked in there earlier. It made me chuckle.
-
The muppet who remembered playing us in the 3rd, they were 2nd Division both seasons.
-
I saw this beauty over there. Brilliant.
There are two Villa fans in my workplace and it says a lot that despite the 5-0 scoreline, I felt like I was the one with bragging rights over them this morning. 5-0 was a totally undeserved scoreline on their part and I hope their fans realise that it doesn't make them anything special or deserving of any credit... they simply caught us at the right time. We had bigger fish to fry beforehand (United, Wolves) and have bigger fish to come (Man City x2 and second placed Derby). My colleagues didn't really have any reply to that and walked away meekly!

Don't you just love it when little clubs get four shiny new stands and suddenly think they're in the Nou Camp. And not one hint of racism in that thread at all. Oh no.

To be honest I'm with them on the 'empty seats' and 'shit support my lord' comment. Other than the first verse it's the most excruciating song ever.

So that is the one you went with for the mag then! Fucking poxy piss ant clubs playing big boys games. Arrogant? Me? Whatever next.

Did they want a standing ovation from us because they're doing well and beat Man Utd? They got hammered, well and truly, one of those hammerings that have been promised for 18 months. Outplayed for 70 minutes, no excuses, injuries, tiredness, we have our own, we've just played away twice in a few days. They thought they were going to come here and put a nail in our coffin, full of confidence and the glow of underdogs sticking it to everyone. Probably pumped up for the first 15 minutes, then we bit back.
We've all the top teams to play, everyone around us, they've got to come to Villa Park, notice is served, there's dickings to be handed out.
Hopefully....
-
They came thinking that they were going to turn us over and it bit them in the arse so they are having a hissy fit. Bloody diddums.

Cheryl cole Fernandez or something , but I bagsey her

It's getting a tad Tubbs & Edward on their forum now (since a Villa supporter popped up on the thread). Still, it's pleasing to see that there's absolutely no bitterness or anger. No Sir.

There's no doubt she's absolutely lovely to look at. That is until the conversation starts and after a while of it you wish you hadn't bothered.

A big conk? really?! I take it you're more of an Alien Grey type of guy?

Well I don't think she's got much to worry about in the aesthetics dept., but beauty's forever in the eye of the beholder innit.

That was a dodgy link, better illustrated after the edit. I agree with you on the aesthetics - as I said, she’s gorgeous.
I don’t usually swoon over white girls as much as I do women of colour, but beautiful brown eyes like hers can win me over, as I’m sure she’ll be delighted to know.

Who’s Alien Grey?
They're an alien species with bulbous heads, but handily they have extremely small noses. Allegedly. ;)

Yeah, I like small flat noses like some black and Asian women have.
I thought Alien Grey might have been a character in 50 Shades.
Still, 5-0 eh?

Fair play to you, Mr M. No doubt Ms Tweedy will be delighted with her loyal fanbase on H&V. 8)

It certainly is, yet there's still no hint of bitterness or anger towards us. It's uncanny.

Beating Man United at home in a League Cup Quarter Final seems to be the biggest trophy they've ever won.

Well that fully explains their joyful badinage. Gawd bless 'em! :)

To be fair to them, it's the only thing they have to shout about. At the same time I'm not sure it's very classy to lord it over a much smaller club who have been punching above their weight.
-
It is when they think they are some reincarnation of Brazil 1970. See also Wolves.
-
Lip up fatty, fatty, for the reaggea
-
Their away support increased by over 25% from it's average. Of course it was their big day out.
It proper fucked me off that they thought they could.come here as favourites and roll us over. No mark little skid stains.

I do hope Cheryl doesn’t read this, she’s going to be heartbroken when she realises some middle aged blokes on a football forum would really fancy her if it wasn’t for her accent.

We aren't. We pointed out that it was a big day out for them, which it was, and they took offence. Now, three pages in, they're saying they're not bitter.

Fuck them. If you want arrogance then try irritation as these piss shit, no mark, clubs getting uppity with us for pointing out we might be a big deal comparatively.
-
Well I'm thoroughly enjoying the bitterness of an upstart club getting their arses handed to them, feels like the return of a long lost friend.
Long may it continue.

Yeah considering she has built up her own business worth over 20M, is funny, beautiful and her tastes apparently are more for boytoys rather than older men I think she will survive :)
