Not pretty but a very solid and much needed win.
-
Needed that.
-
Fugly, but 3 points and Bruce lives on...
-
We winned a game.
-
I always said Snoddy should be the first name on the team sheet.
-
Really glad to get the 3 points but Bruceratops has to find a way to get this squad playing football. 75 minutes of that match was trash. Plenty of clubs in this league would love to have the starting line up we do that is considered "barebones."
-
First hour we were awful, massive result in the end though.
-
Winner winner chicken dinner! :)
-
EASY...EASY...EASY... :)
-
You'll never see a more eye-bleeding win.
-
Great result that with teams above loosing and we have some better fixtures after Bristol city. Important players to come back as well. Get in villa!!!!
-
The Smogmonsters had one shot on goal.
Well done lads.
-
RHM had added more life in his cameo role than Hogan for most of it. He came back to get the ball, and then linked up play further down the pitch. Bruce has to be brave enough to play with Grealish, RHM and even the other kids more often and even from the start.
-
What a good day, I fine Jingle Bells win and Tesco’s and Scum hit the bottom. Yay
-
Glad for the 3 points, but the only difference between today and the last few weeks turgid shite was we didn't throw a couple of goals away.
Still not good enough. Still want him gone.
-
We'll be announcing ticket details soon.
We're doing our best to help them score. If we win this, I'll dress up as Shirley Temple and wrestle a silverback at Dudley Zoo.
-
Missed it thanks to the flu. Great win lads...now fookin build on it
-
Squad is decimated by illness and injury and still people moan...
Good win at a tough place.
-

awful most of the game
jack and RHM to start next game
Terry back
and no Whelan please
-

That is the point. None of our wins are convincing but we had stopped giving stupid goals away until today. Well played Tommy, far more convincing than Jedi back there
-
In the big scheme, the win is all important, far more important than the side issues about performance, quality or Bruce.....for today anyway.
-

Yep, but this has just bought him a few more games. Hopefully this win is the catalyst to now a new run of good results, something we’ve seen with Bruce. He’s not going to get fired though while we are where we are and starting to look up again.

Agreed. Certainly needs to be pointed out that Elphick against a barrage of long balls did really well today. Very composed all game.

I think there will be TV rights to be sold for this one.
-
A typical Bruce type win, the football no different to when we lose or draw.
The reason Grealish should play is that he is the only player that links defence and attack.
Elphick did ok again.
RHM looks a better idea than Hogan.
-
Delighted! Needed a win and it is also important to go into the Bristol game with confidence. Great stuff!

I said we'd win, and yes it is barebones, and we have to realise that it doesn't help when the team is switched around because of injuries.
But we should be doing better, at passing, tackling, etc, you know, the basics.
-
Anyone got a curly blonde wig?
-
We're currently in talks with Tony O'Shea to see if he fancies a trip to Dudley Zoo.

This is really good to hear. Happy for him.
-
Where can I buy a half & half 'Jimbo / Dudley Kong' scarf?
-
We done a win!
Here's hoping we do a load more now.
-
7 points off 2nd place with half a season to go. We’re not out of it yet!
-
Just heard back from Dudley Zoo. Apparently they haven't got a silverback, but they've got a big cat and a pot of radiator paint.
-
Any win awards is a good one and this is much needed. I imagine it wasnt pretty but we'll take that. How did Hogan do today?
-
Great result, terrible game. When RHM came on there was a glimpse of how we should play rather than how we do play. It seems churlish to moan after a win but for me it still isn't enough to give Bruce the benefit of the doubt.
-
Any win awards is a good one and this is much needed. I imagine it wasnt pretty but we'll take that. How did Hogan do today?
He was isolated for the majority of the game. No real tactic to get him the ball. Ironically the only real tactic we employed with regularity got us the goal just after Hogan went off. But Bruce once again hasn’t played to his strengths. He looks completely disillusioned with it all and disinterested. RHM came on and did more in the short time he was on, and looked very lively.
-
I actually thought we closed the game out well. It was nice to see some game management for once and Boro didn't get a sniff.
-
Boro looked really bland and those poor cold fuckers up there today got a glimpse of the future with those long throw ins from both sides. Pulis truly is a dinosaur.
-
Pleased with a win. Oh for a Manager who'd build on this.
-
Great win all things considered. Jedinak playing holding role by himself is so much more dominant. Thought the work rate and Our pressing was much much better. If our final ball had been better we could have been more comfortable.
They look garbage.
7 off automatic, win Monday now and a are right back in it. UTV
-
Pleased with a win. Oh for a Manager who'd build on this.
Oh Bruce might, he is quite capable of going on good runs as well as bad ones. But it is now hard to regard him as anything other than a stop gap solution till we get in a long term manager. I say that with no ill will to the man.
-
Well, thank fuck my prediction was wrong. UTV.
-
Lovely to be proved wrong.
Whether you're in the Bruce In or Out camp (and I imagine most of us are out) that was a fantastic win in the circumstances.
Now let's beat Bristol and the season is alive again.
UTV.
-
We absolutely had to win. Pleased to hear Tommy did well.
-

-
Had a feeling we'd win today. Bruce has the admirable/annoying habit of rescuing himself just in time.
Happy to hear that the Russian got on and made an impact, I've been wanting him to be involved for ages now and thought his injuries and Bruce's conservative nature might have put paid to any chances in the team for him.
-
Will it be streamed anywhere?
Well, Yes and No - it's on AVTV !

Thank you.
Jack looked influential
-
Decent away win. Created few chances, but took one of them. Can't remember Boro ever looking like scoring.
That'll do.
-
We're currently in talks with Tony O'Shea to see if he fancies a trip to Dudley Zoo.
Isn't he Rick's brother?
-
Huge result in the circumstances and a well worked goal. Super assist from Adamoah. Good to hear Elphick did well, playing Jedi centre back in those 2 games cost us points.
-
Finally a chance to hurtle down stairs to the front when we score!
First half was poor and typical Pulis football. I thiught Leadbitter ahould have walked for an elbow on Onomah.
We moved the ball far too slowly and it was easy for them to get bodies behind the ball. Adomah went close and bar one long throw, I cannot think of anything of note that they had all game let alone all half
Hourihane pushed on more second half and I thought we were the better team. We moved it marginally quicker and Jack was at the heart of that.
Shotton switched off and Hourihane found space, fed Albert and boom!
Their circus act proved to be the one trick pony he is although I will commend him for coming out of nowhere to dispossess RHM.
The good: no mistakes. We defended really well. Jedinak dominated centrally and the centre halves coped well with the aerial bombardment.
The bad: we move the ball too slowly. We don't know how to use Hogan and it is a complete waste. RHM offered more.
-
Squad is decimated by illness and injury and still people moan...
Good win at a tough place.
Credit where it's due. Good win at a tough place. People will always have a moan on a fanzine it's a given.
-
The defence was excellent against some big units. The leagues third top scorer didn't really get a sniff. We also looked like we could score goals when RHM came on, he looked sharp and hungry. If it's a choice between him and Hogan to start on Monday, based on today, I'd go with RHM.
-
2,648 Villa fans there today. They deserve medals. And it would’ve been 2,649 if Des had made it.
-
Great away support that.
Glad to hear Jedinak played well. He's better option for us as DM than Whelan I think.
Is John Terry being saved for the Bristol game?
-
Elphick played really well. Did the right thing in hacking Fatboy down first half near the halfway line. No mistakes against the heavy artillery being launched left right and centre.
-
Twice this season, on the brink, Bruce has got results in tough games now. Both times he has been fortunate with team changes being almost thrust upon him, meaning an 11 that he would not have chosen has done the job. Hopefully RHM, Grealish etc get a run now.
Big kudos to Elphick. Miles from the team, stayed professional, worked hard and taken his chance. Thought he did well at Brentford and from reports was Man of the Match today.
Jedinak playing holding midfield makes such a massive difference too. Genuine leader. Please keep him fit and don't let that useless over the hill backward passer back into the side.
-

That’s good to hear, now can we make sure he doesn’t play again because we owe the law of averages heavily

Thank you.
I thought we did pretty well, and the manager just about got it right, even if he got lucky with Onomah's injury (which forced the Grealish introduction).
Elphick deserves a special mention for his steadfastness under the high-ball barrage. RHM looks a very exciting prospect; let's bloody use him! Preferably alongside Davis.

Was it Elphick who came and tossed his shirt into the crowd along with Grealish at the end? I couldnt make out who it was.
-
It's always good to get a goal from open play. It was well worked too.
-
And the most important thing of all aside us winning is Leeds , Sheffield Utd and Cardiff losing do regaining ground as early as poss after dreadful December was great
-
The fact Bruce has to go on about the mss hysteria shit (a phrase he coined at Sunderland apparently when their fans had enough too) straight after rather than praising the players that came in to the hilt is annoying. Even more so when he admits Elphick would not have played had Whelan not got a sickness bug, therefor Jedinak would have been at centre half despite him being totally at sea there against Sheffield United. All Bruce has done is prove my point, enforced changes have left him very fortunately getting a win. Almost in spite of Bruce.
-
Good result which has put us back in the promotion picture when it looked like we might be slipping out of it. Good to see RHM feature after all his injury woes.

right so just like when he got lucky with Davis early on, it's the same today with Elphick. And in other words he'd have started Jedinak and Whelan together again if he could have done.
-
Did he bang on about mass hysteria again? Patronising bastard. We hadn’t won in 5 and are supposed to be getting promoted it’s not mass hysteria and one win does not change that.
-
Yes, Elphick did toss his shirt at the end.
-
7 points off 2nd place with half a season to go. We’re not out of it yet!
Rejoice
and we go into the new year not secure in the top two or nestled in among the top six
but 'we're not out of it yet'
Happy New Year everyone

Yes. And would not have had RHM on the bench etc. Hes an utter twat for having a pop at the fans after that. And even bigger one if he can't see that the enforced changes have helped him win, and as such he should be praising those players, not trying to cover his fucking arse. Knob head. Lost more respect for him as a person tonight than I have in his whole tenure so far. He is approaching Lambert knob status now.
-

Cheers. He looked well happy and fired up. really glad for him.

Same here. Just fucking praise the players who played, praise the fans who made their way to the game and cheered us on in the cold. And say there's a lot to play for and we will give it everything and then go away. He just cannot help himself.

Cheers. He looked well happy and fired up. really glad for him.
Yeah well done Tommy.

yes he is a very good professional

Yes we were disappointed at Brentford. Yes we were disappointed at home to Sheffield utd. Yes we were disappointed at home to Millwall. ...yes we are disappointed that you are our fucking manager but there we go you arsehole.
-
We have won today haven't we? I listened to the first half, and i've been told it was not great. I've no idea how we played overall but i'm glad we've got the badly needed 3 points to get us back on track but I've just read a lot of anger and grumpyness. It's a bit odd.
We have won today haven't we?
-
In 50 years I have never disliked a villa manager as much. Instead of having a pop at the fans that pay your ridiculous wages just stop and look at your achievements in the last 18 months. If I had my way you would be sacked tomorrow after an interview like that.
-

I think everyone was happy, then Steve Bruce decided it was time to roll out the old "hysteria" routine. Which understandably has not gone down very well.

I think it’s Bruce’s comments that have generated anger.

Delighted with the win. For your comments fuck off Bruce.

I am sure everyone here is glad we won. What I not glad about is listening to that turd of a manager having a pop at our 'hysterical fans' after picking up one in six leaving us closing the year out of the playoffs.
Every time I listen to Bruce he makes me pissed off. The sooner he goes the better, and scabbing a win here and there against teams that not long ago we would be expected to beat heavily does not mean he should get a softy ride. Yet again we were unconvincing. He is approaching DOL levels of patronising whilst not being as good even in a lowel level of football and having spent a huge amount relative to the teams above us.
Get rid.
-

Hello Steve, welcome to to the forum ;)
-
Oh dear. That's taken the edge off the 3 points and no mistake. All the criticism has been firmly levelled at Bruce and I suppose he's itching to defend himself but f##k me, millions spent and playing shit football, scraping points mostly on a wing and a prayer. Wind your neck in Bruce. Dead man walking once again it seems.

Hello Steve, welcome to to the forum ;)
Glad to be here PWS.
-
He’s getting further and further from keeping his job at the end of the year whatever happens.
-
If we lose to Bristol City, after those comments surely he will be given his marching orders.
On a positive note, after his last mass hysteria comments we went on a really good run.
-
Any big club that has a poor run of form will always have crisis hanging over them, look at Man. United at the minute.
SB played for them for donkeys years so should know this. He can't hack it managing a club where there's constant spotlight. He goes 5 games without a win at Wigan and Hull and nobody cares outside a 10 mile radius of those clubs.
Disappointing interview.
-
Good win, well done all.
Bruce’s interview pissed me off, he’s mismanaged one of the biggest championship budgets ever. Yes we expect to be higher than 9th and will tell you so you fucking doughnut.
-
The only things that’s missing from the post match interview is the following:
‘I suppose it’s off with me Head again this week is it.’
-
"We're not hysterical, you're just shit".
-
Bruce isn't helping himself with the hysteriagate bollocks he trots out every time we are shit.He might think he is deflecting critism by using the old "one game away from a crisis" chestnut , but he just comes across as a precious tit.
-
Well done Villa 11 plus subs on getting an unexpected but great win. I'm not snoddy's greatest fan, but well done to him for getting the goal! Keep up the good work lads! UTV

Pulis:

I think he is complimenting us?

Pulis: "I thought Villa did well, they played with a back four and five in front and never let us get in behind."

Well it's been obvious for years that he's in love with us as he has never been able to stop talking about us. Thankfully this love remains unrequited.
-
I followed the first half on here and heard most of the second half of WM. Time to watch C5 now.
-
Thank Christ for that.
In much the same way that the best way to watch a Steve Bruce team is on Ceefax, the best way to endure a Steve Bruce post match press conference is with a giant pair of ear muffs. Deluded oaf.
-
Pulis: "I thought Villa did well, they played with a back four and five in front and never let us get in behind."
I think he is complimenting us?
It's interesting isn't it? Some managers would bemoan that approach, but in the mind of Tony Pulis, playing with a back four, five in midfield and totally negating the opposition is viewed as doing "well".
-
Pulis: "I thought Villa did well, they played with a back four and five in front and never let us get in behind."
I think he is complimenting us?
Not long back. I think Pulis was right. We weren't amazing, but deserved to win and managed the game well in the last 20 minutes, especially the defence. I feel for Hogan in a way but RHM showed the simple things he should be doing in the short time he was on.
Only slight downside was stopping in Thirsk. It's a nice enough place but lots of people end up there. Saltburn was much better.
-
So after the rubbish we've endured recently he trots out same old crap "it was poor" "we made too many mistakes" blah blah blah. And doesn't tell us what he intends to do about it. He keeps schtum about the fans. We pick up one decent result and he goes on the offensive towards us. Sorry but that's the epitome of a fucking twat in my opinion.

Don't agree - O'Leary and Houllier talked down the club. Lambert was totally deluded 'excellent' comments and Sherwood was Barry Bullshit.

The magnificent spectacle looks like it could be the final knockings of the coverage this evening. Quelle surprise! :(
-
A great, much needed win but Bruce really needs to pipe down considering the money spent and where we are in the table still.
-
We’ve missed a good opportunity to get 2nd place over the past few weeks. That’s very disappointing.
-
Thank goodness for that, we’re going up again.

Managed to get the second half on the wireless. We sounded lively. Jack has to start every match and try to get players to think about pass and move. He is in a different time zone for most of them. Did anyone notice in the Brentford game as he ran and short passed to Snodgrass on the edge of the area and was expecting the short pass right back which would have put him clean on goal in the middle of the area, but Snodgrass stood there like a lemon and lost the ball.
The highlights were pathetic on C5.

He looked pissed to me (and I mean it in the English, rather than American sense). What a total fucking shambles of a man.

You're right, he did look pissed. Funnily enough he also came out with the sort of paranoid ramble that a you get from a pub bore who's had several double vodkas too many. Again.

Don't get me wrong, if he was pissed then I don't think that necessarily makes him a shambles. He just is a shambles.

I am no fan of Bruce but I can’t help feel we might go on another winning run especially with Terry back and Jack slowly being integrated and Kodja back at the death. He / we could be lucky.

Someone mentioned earlier that Bruce was "precious". Funny that, I think that same criticism could be levelled at us. Bruce gets dogs abuse for going on an a bad run of form, and responds on the defensive when he gets asked a question after a good result. I would probably do the same. But regardless of all this, Bruce is referring to the press with his "crisis" comments not the Villa fans.
He's here till the end of the season. Let's get behind the Villa, he may surprise us.

I meant as in the title of their album released in the year Ron Saunders managed his third team in a League Cup Final!

I think Terry coming back will get us into the playoffs. God knows we’ve missed him

If he really doesn't think the criticism is justified then maybe the time to get his digs in is when they have no chance of coming back to haunt him. Doing it after an appalling run of form is maybe a bit premature i think. It's not like we played anything better than average anyway but for once didn't make a couple of the usual ricketts.

But my point was his "digs" aren't aimed at us, but at the press. I couldn't care less what they think.

well i wouldn't say the press have been that scathing. Not compared to here anyway, and lets face it the press pick up on stuff from the fans, not the other way around
-

So you think he reads and gives a toss about what a couple of dozen people on here think? Seriously.
A good result today particularly given how injuries and illness have disrupted the side. Shows that there is a spirit and some fight in the squad. We have to use this as a platform to start another run of positive results. I can only comment on what I heard on the radio but it sounded like the win was a deserved one.

I'm sure he gets "correspondence" and knows what the general mood is. I remember MON suffered the same when at Leicester and made a point of phoning up the people once he'd turned it around. If you're gonna hold grudges and rub peoples faces in it, at least do it from a position of strength AFTER you've won the argument.....

Always one game away from a crisis? Welcome to managing a proper big club with higher expectations. Which you are not exactly managing brilliantly you cock end. And anyway a second bad run of 5 or 6 games is not 1 game. Just regurgitating the bollocks he came out with at the start of the season.

Percentage wise in terms of satisfaction with Bruce i'd say it is. Certainly i don't know any non H&V members who are calling for Bruce to get a new contract and a payrise

Nail on the head.
As I've said he played for 10 years at Man. United fer christ sake. You think Fergie would just let 4-5 winless run as "unlucky lads, let's try again next week." He'd be hurting and working night and day to put it right and they always did.
I get the feeling SB has got a bit of a dressing down from behind the scenes in last few days judging by the tweets from the owner and Wyness since Brentford so when you're under pressure you can lash out.

Oh come on that's a cheap shot. I doubt any football fan thinks that, even Man City supporters.

Maybe so, but those that aren't motivated enough to come on boards like this, i'd say ranged between disappointment and resignation/hope from those i know. I wouldn't say any of them think he's doing a great job.. And lets face it they're not usually the ones who start chanting for the manager to go at games.
-
To be fair the injury list would have been a challenge for any manager, but two things have remained consistent regardless of who he's had available - the "quality" of the "football" has been absolutely shite, and his refusal to acknowledge that a piss poor run of 5 or 6 games (and not the first one) is not good enough considering the investment in the squad and that the fans have a right to expect better. And that's two very good reasons why I would not be unhappy to see the back of him.

But once again you refer to the extreme "doing a great job". Of course I don't think that, no one does. I just don't think he's doing such a bad job that he deserves the sack, and whist I understand that the majority on here think otherwise, I'm not convinced the majority of villa fans think the same.

Well you can only go with who you speak to regularly off here. Maybe, the correct term is they wouldn't be upset if he went? It's Like Brexit i guess. I was convinced it would be landslide for the remainers until i made the effort to talk to people at work and realised most were for leaving. The quiet ones are usually the majority.

I do not underestimate the influence of fanzines, this one in particular. I do not include myself of course but there are a lot of very bright people on these pages. Their views spread exponentially across the fan base and into the wider world of football. We operate as a network in these days of the social media.
Through my racing contacts for example I might hear that a certain player has a gambling problem. I could not and would not repeat potential libel but it would enable me to understand better why that player's form was so bad. That is hypothetical. A real example would be the way a number of H and Vers privately pieced together what happened in the run up to and the aftermath of the infamous Secret Santa video.
-

What fucker said that?
-
Just stop quoting when there's no need.
-
''We're 7th and 6/7 points off automatic, what's the big panic''
There in lies the small mindedness of Bruce. He's spent his managerial career at piss pot clubs, he cannot handle the pressure and isn't good enough.
-
The Bristol game isn’t on tv. It’s on late because Bristol started late tonight and have a minimum 48 hours recovery time allowed.
-
Wolves were nearly relegated last season spent a lot appointed a decent manager play attractive football and are pissing this division, we spent a lot appointed a mediocre manager play shit football and will struggle to reach the play offs, big difference.
-
We won, but it was a dire game brought together by two dire managers, a side forced on our manager but still he see's nothing wrong or if he does only he can put right, God help us.
-
A crucial win in a game I would class as a six pointer.
We have a run of three home games against relegation threatened Barnsley, Burton and Blues coming up. Nine points out of nine from those would be massive for us.
-
If we had lost yesterday then this thread would have been full of posts arguing that injuries are no excuse and it is up to the manager to use the squad. When we do just that the response is that it was forced on him with the implication being that if we had played a different 11 then we would certainly have lost.
-
Is it my imagination, or was Pulis actually nice about us after the game?
-
It won’t last. Soon he will forget where he is and start talking about ‘a club not too far from here not even being in the Premier League.’
-
Is it my imagination, or was Pulis actually nice about us after the game?
Fairs fair he was quite complimentary about the club and Bruce. On the debate about whether this site is representative of the mood of the fans I'd say yes. I was out for a few beers on Friday night with a group of lads who I rarely see until Xmas. Six are Villa and to a man the conversation followed pretty much the same line as what gets said on here. One of the guys spent all day recently at some event and was with Sid and Tony Morley. They were both saying that the biggest problem is the players bought in from smaller clubs- Hourihane/ Hogan etc struggled big time due to coming from a club with low expectations and your the star player to a club with ambitions to rule the world! (well the owner anyway)
-

But he doesn't help himself by admitting that he didn't think playing Elphick twice in three days was a good idea and would have had the clearly unsuited Jedinak there again had it not been for Whelan consuming too much Guinness and pigs in blankets over Christmas.
-
Is it my imagination, or was Pulis actually nice about us after the game?
Probably a mate of Bruce. Now he isn't with the Baggies the "rivalry" with him no longer exists

Good scenes when the goal went in. The bloke in orange and yellow hugging the errant fan.

Indeed, but I wonder what happened to the exuberant 'hooligan' who ran on the pitch? He'll probably end up with a banning order. ::)
-
I'm pleased with the three points it was well needed.
-
I've been moaning all season about the lack of quality crosses seen into the box and what happens we get 2 in 2 games, long may it continue, starting with tomorrow.
-

Wolves success can be put down more to the involvement of Super Agent Jorge Mendes than anything else , but it is widely recognised, that, if and when Wolves go up there will clear conflicts of interest to address regarding the involvement of Mendes and, quite likely significant hurdles to overcome with respect to FFP. Don´t forget thay have spent heavily over the past 2 seasons and will certainly make a loss this season.
Like QPR & Watford before them, Wolves are playing the ´loan now...pay later´game and gambling everything on an immediate return to the Premiership. But, what would happen if they ( like us ) had a significant run of injuries to a number of key players ?....what would happen if Mendes decided to take his ´bandwagon´elsewhere ?, he is , after all a ´Football Agent´, a title that is hardly synonymous with trustworthiness & integrity..............I have feeling that our ´Villa ´is being built on stronger foundations, albeit rather ponderously.....................Godzvilla!
