Gardner, Westwood... must mean Jedinak and Tshibola aren't fit. Balls. Although Jedinak also had a long trip. Why no Adomah at least on the bench?

Weak without Tshibola and Jedinak.

Proper shit midfield again.

Presumably RDM will stick with the 4231...

Gallini
De Laet, Elphick, Chester, Cissokho
Gardner, Westwood
Ayew, McCormack, Grealish
Kodija

Injuries and travel can be the only reasons for that midfield.

Good bench looks like Adomah and Tshibola will be ok for the other 2 games this week so not too worried.

The only consolation is that against Derby neither Gardner or Westwood stood out. It neither were liabilities. And if the forwards did their job we'd have won that game

Di Matteo was an excellent midfielder. You would have thought he knows a good one or two. Evidently not. Maybe Gardner will score against his former club kind of thing..

Where is Adomah?

What a disappointing lineup.

Still, good to see Kodjia out there. I think him and McCormack will be an excellent partnership.

Adomah is injured that came out on Friday.  Jedinak came back with a knock and travelled 30,000 miles.  Hence that's why I assume he's on the bench but Gardner and Westwood Jesus.

You can't knock what they did overall in the window, it was excellent but it is fair to say that if we lose 1 in centre mid or central defence we should be concerned, and if we lose 2 we're potentially in real shit.

Gardner has really got to take his chance soon. If he doesn't raise his game against Forrest he never will. Westwood is fine for 50% of the game when we're on top. When we're not he's a liability. If he improves the latter part of his game (and granted he's had 4 years to improve) then he'll be fine in the Championship.
I worry about us defensively because of the weak midfield, but what is more important today is our attack. That front 4 should be absolutely bloody murdering this league. I don't care if we concede a couple of goals if we score 3-4 ourselves. We have to start putting away our chances when we have them. We should have put Huddersfield, Derby and Bristol City to the sword but we fluffed our lines.

UTV.

At this stage, I can't help but feel that it's a grand conspiracy. Even people like me who doesn't think someone like Westwood is actually all that bad don't really want him starting every game, yet it still happens.

Surely if fit Jedi Tish Westwood Lyden Bacuna Gardner is enough ?

Trouble is though, Westwood is fairly shit and Gardner is very shit. Add to that Bacuna's apparent flaky attitude and Tsibolas inexperience and I think another decent centre mid and centre back should be where the money is spent in Jan rather than looking to cover the abundance of attacking talent we have whilst they're away for a few matches on international duty.

I'll be interested to see if Lansbury is as good as many have suggested

At least it looks like Jedinak can manage say 30 mins (or why be on the bench). He hasn't done it so far but I'd like to see us move to a three man central midfield to close down the game if needed.

Very true Matt, if we find ourselves in front it might be worth taking an attacker off and putting an extra bod in the middle to help those 2 out and hopefully see the game out.

Dominating the game but we need to score before half-time and then keep our foot on the gas. One option may be to swap RM with Rudy if we want to be a bit more direct up top. The option is there.
We're just starting to see a lull in the game, this is the EXACT time where Westwood tends to disappear, so I'd really like him to get a grip in midfield. Gary has started well and hopefully he keeps going.

Ayew's trying to do too much. He needs to keep it simple and be more elaborate at the right times. He got space, crossed it and we had a chance. Simples. He can't try and score a wonder goal every time he gets the ball. He's been lively today, if wasteful but calling him a clown or a waste of space is a bit harsh. He might be frustrating and a bit of a moody sod at times but he's trying.

He just needs to hold his position a little more. Trouble is he wants to be in the middle. He comes inside and that forces RM to have to drop deep or shift to the left. Ayew's got to pick and choose his runs inside a bit more for the benefit of our shape and because he's got the ability to beat a man and cross it.
But he does look most likely to create something today, along with Jack.
I do think too that playing Grealish, RM and Ayew at once is not really working.

Comfortable at the back but too dependent on the two wide men, Westwood and Gardner need to take charge of the game. Kodja looks dangerous but cant see McCormack having too much influence at minute, he's too deep and needs to be in the box as opposed to taking corners. Having said that a bit more luck and he's put us 1-0 up.

Too many cooks for me. You've essentially got three number 10's playing. I would take off one of Ayew or McCormack (probably Ross) and bring on Bacuna to give us more width and just get chalk on his boots. That'll allow Grealish to come inside a little more and then Ayew can play where he's itching to, in the middle.
If it's still 0-0 after the hour mark I'd look at big Rudy to come on.

Another match where I have no idea how we are not winning. Granted we've not been good, however we should have scored at the minimum.
Was really hoping to see Adomah today. His natural pace and width is what we are crying out for.
Early days but I don't think this formation works. If we are going to play Ross and Kodjia it needs to be in a 4312 (may as well until Adomah is fit)  push Ross alongside JK and put JG in the hole

The only time we really looked like panicking them was when Gardner charged forward. Other than that it's been rather pedestrian as we've tried to go through the crowd rather than opening them up.

Started well then faded before ending quite strongly.  We've just been too predictable and haven't used our pace and width to get back hide them enough.  Think they will be happy so far and will feel they can nick something in the second half.  I'd give it about ten mins of the second half then make a change if things don't improve.   Dull game so far.

Pundits quite liking ayew at half time . . .
His final product has been erratic but he's been our best player so far. Not quite sure why he's suddenly become a panto villain on here. The only problem I see is that he and McCormack can't play together because they both want to influence from the same area.

I agree. Ayew, McCormack and Grealish all effectively doing the same thing. Looks a mess.

I'd probably take McCormack off and put ayew central if we keep on like this

Yeah feel bad for Ross.  He is the sort of old school centre forward we need and he is being played out of position.

I think we've largely controlled midfield. Actually Westwood has played a couple of very decent balls in the first half. I think our problems lie in that front 4 at the moment. GG and Westwood are basically doing their job, to hold and control midfield and leave it to the attacking 4 to create who aren't doing quite enough. I'm no Westwood lover by any stretch but he's played well enough for me and Gardner has looked good.

What gets me is that with us, half an hour to go, one goal down, we have absolutely ZERO chance of coming back and winning, yet when the positions are reversed, we pretty much never hold on.

We're just so fucking weak, it feels like it will never end.
I just don't get it new owner, manager, and the most expensively assembled squad in the Championship yet same mentality

I was wondering that myself, but seeing as he was Xia's pick he's going to get time. As shit as this is important to note that last season Burnley were nowhere near promotion at Christmas and had a stunning second half of the season. I can see us being a much better second half of the season side. Granted there is an element of clutching at whatever straws I can in my argument.

We've seen Ayew in a nutshell today and it was what we were told by the internet scouts when we signed him. A mixture of frustrating, erratic and brilliant. If he was consistent he'd be playing for a CL club, but he's not and we've got him here. He has to play for me because he creates. It doesn't come off everytime but he keeps on trying and eventually something good happens. Most of our chances today have come through him.

If Ayew plays to help others and play them in, then he is going to win us a lot of games and end with a lot of assists. He just needs to keep his head up.

I think Gestede a super option to have off the bench at this level. Completely different type of player. I would certainly have RM and Kodjia as first choice and have them develop a chemistry and understanding with each other.

6pts from 6 games is definitely not good enough. There needs to be more urgency to our play, too much of it in the middle is going nowhere, there's no threat out wide so everything comes through the middle all laboured as two of our worst players happen to be the midfield.

Disappointing as well to see us fold and concede late, again, and also tactically we should have threw on the additional midfielder when we got our noses in front to stiffen things up instead of continuing with 5 attacking players, knowing how mentally weak we still appear to be.

Watch the two goals from Forest and it's blindingly obvious that the teams achilles heel is the heart of the side in the middle, we need to get Jedinak and Tshibola up to speed asap because Gardner and Westwood even at this level are poor. The two of them directly involved in the first we conceded one playing a terrible ball and the other being pushed out of the way and beaten when a stronger midfielder would have broken up the play there and then. He's a little girl. We need a tough bugger in there.

Very disappointed, same old same old again.

Forest - 2 attacks and 2 goals from a bunch of loathsome, cheating, cynical bastards.

Us - Not enough urgency 1st half, not enough urgency from Grealish throughout, it was like watching him last season. Ayew MOTM, the forwards looked good when we pressed harder and got them more involved. Bunn probably could have done better with their first. Everyone else neither here nor there.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Nottingham Forest Match Thread.
Post by: curiousorange on September 11, 2016, 03:32:28 PM
You can see how much sides panic when we're attacking - we're not getting the break of the ball (like Forest had today, twice) in attacking situations and in particular the penalty area. I'm convinced that part of the not scoring lies in the way we let teams off easily when we've just had a decent chance; penning a side like Brentford or even that shower today in their own box and you'd see too many chances to keep them all out. And if Ayew could put his head up more, that would be fab too.
