Poor selection imo. Not one of those midfielders is comfortable going backwards and Sanchez should be in there.

Baker, Vlaar, Senderos, Richardson, Cissokho and Cole still injured I presume?

I worry that unless we get an early goal Sunderland will boss the midfield, find the confidence they so lack and make the game so much harder. With that selection I can't see Delph being given a licence to roam forward. It appears we've gone for a very static 4-4-2. Still, at least Timmy can change it and give his world saving talk at half time.

Vlaar ''still'' injured?? Cole has another Hamstring injury - out for another 2 weeks.

It's a very brave team and I'm worried about our defence with that midfield in front of them

Is have definitely kept the 433

Let's hope he's right

Them:

Pantilimon, Reveillere, van Aanholt, Brown, O'Shea (c), Bridcutt, Larsson, Rodwell, Alvarez, Defoe, Fletcher.

subs: Jones, Wickham, Gomez, Graham, Coates, Vergini, Mannone.

They look pretty 4-4-2 as well.

We're playing Sunderland who have a marginally better goal scored record than us. They are also crap at home and like us in many ways get nervous quickly in front of their home fans. We need to get into them, get the first goal and kill any little bit of belief they have. That line is fine and great to see Benteke in there.

Aren't Sunderland 4-3-1-2? Depends where Alvarez plays I suppose. If they have gone with that we should lose the midfield, but we can double-up on their full backs when breaking.

Very attacking line up  -  I'm just a bit worried that with both Sinclair & n'Zogbia in we don't have someone in midfield to break up play. I'd have had Sanchez in there instead of Cleverley. At least we won't have Westwood gently floating set pieces into the hands of their goalie or out of play

Van Aanholt aside it's a very slow side. I'd hope that N'Zogbia, Sinclair and Gabby have been told to run at people wherever possible.

Defoe and Fletcher, with Wickham on the bench. They could be quite threatening. Looks like both teams are playing 4-4-2.

Their home form may be crap but have you seen our away form? We absolutely need to "get into them" but as they play very narrow I worry Delph and Cleverly will be outnumbered in midfield.

At the risk of sounding flippant, I am completely dismissing anything we "achieved" this season under Lambert. Yes our form home and away has been poor which is why we are where we are. But last weeks home performance was better than anything this season under Lambert and I expect the away form to improve too. That starts with pressing and not being afraid to attack.

We might as well go for it. In all honesty Westwood, though not bad in the last few games, has been somewhat anonymous. It doesn't surprise me to see him sacrificed after Timmy said something to the effect of wanting to notice players on the pitch. Players who try to influence games rather than merely just being there. Cleverley has risen to that more so than Westwood.

They're flimsey and I admire the bravery to really put out a side to have a go. Obviously Benteke comes in and it would be harsh to drop either Zogbia or Sinclair at the moment. Zoggy will only last 60-70 anyhow so if needs be there will be a plan B should we need more grit in the middle.

I disagree. I think Westwood was every bit as important to our performances as the other midfielders.

I agree, Timmy sets up to play attacking football and there are critics about the team he's picked. If he cocks it up he's at least brought some brighter football than the Lambert style.

He's seen these guys in training so hopefully they'll respond well with Wembley on the horizon.

I've barely noticed him (aside from poor set pieces). That may be a good thing in some ways, but I think Cleverley is someone who does a lot of what Westwood can, with more mobility, and in recent times a little more grit.

I would fancy Delph and Cleverley to dominate a midfield of Rodwell and Bridcutt. I think the third man was more important against a team of thugs like West Brom. Against Sunderland (I hope), a 2 man is enough. For me Westwood is the one to sacrifice of our first choice 3.

I do think Tim is a 442 man

But we've lost both games when we played a variant of that and won both with three misfielders and three strikers - whether 433 or nzogbia behind the front two

Not the side id have picked but it should make for some attacking threat

Bacuna again, Hutton will do well to get back in the side on this evidence.

4-0 and it could easily have been 6.

Whats clear from today with the players we have, we should be easily in top half.

Fantastic display. This is the Benteke of 2 years ago. The Gabby of 6 years ago.
Zogbia has been brilliant. Sinclair is good again. Delph has been imperious. Cleverley is a player who 4 weeks ago I wouldn't have gone near, but now I think should be signed up ASAP. Bacuna has been exceptional since his needless booking. He's absolutely ripping their fullback apart and this is how you play Bacuna effectively as a fullback.

Had Lambert not been fired we'd have seen similar scenes by now to be honest, so I do sympathise somewhat. It's an absolute shambles there. What I think is different though is any new manager coming in won't have quite as much untapped quality to play with as Sherwood had. Their back line is an abomination and their attack and midfield is mediocre at best. Johnson, who is inconsistent, is a huge miss.
They're in a direct battle with QPR as to who is more shit. My money, by a whisker would be on Sunderland.

I've fancied this game all week as the one game, if any, where we could dish out a tonking. It's panned out that way. We could well out do the 6-1 from the other year.

I'd also bring that young striker with the double barrelled name on at 70 minutes. May as well give him a debut. Give Gil a runout when Zoggy tires.

Give the manager his dues for getting the tactics absolutely spot on. He's not just a mouth or a motivator. He's proving bit by bit to be more than that. And credit off course to the staff he has in place. Good on of them. Let's have a great second half now. If the confidence wasn't high already it will be through the roof now. And for the loyal fans who have travelled all season and seen some utter shit, this one is for you lot. Enjoy the rest of the game and the trip home.

Still, there's another 45 minutes to find out...

Clark off to protect him from a booking apparently.  That's the kind of overconfidence that can come back and bite you.

Why not switch Lowton to centre half and give Kinsella a run at left back ?

Sensible sub again from Sherwood. With no recognised defenders fit important Clark didn't pick up a yellow and a 2 match ban today

Bit early for that mind. Looks like Sanchez has been working on that position in the week though.

Now at Villa Park, Sherwood showed that willingness to blood young players remains, after he named 16-year-old Rushian Hepburn-Murphy on the substitutes’ bench for the Premier League match against Sunderland.

For those Villa fans eager to know more about him, here are five facts to get you started:

1) Hepburn-Murphy was born in September 1998 – that is after the World Cup in France which shows just how young Villa’s latest talent is!

2) The teenager is a centre-forward who has played three times for the club’s under-21 side to date, racking up 97 minutes on the pitch but yet to score a goal.

3) The Villa youngster has represented England’s under-16 side on four occasions, making his debut in November 2013.

4) Hepburn-Murphy recently impressed for Villa in the Wiesbadener Liliencup – an under-17 tournament played at the start of the year. The forward was the competition’s joint-top scorer with five goals, including a hat-trick against Rapid Vienna.

5) The teenager is a local lad who has come through the ranks at the club and given his talent there is no reason to suggest he will not ultimately be a very effective option for Sherwood in time.
