You know it is a good night when Vlaar scores and we score from a corner.

Brilliant from the lads. Despite the hattrick, I'm making Lowton my MOTM. He is just oozing class now.

Let's put 9 past Chavski to beat them on aggregate.

Seriously, PL has to do the inverse "pick worselves up and go again", more like to "bring us doon and keep focussed".  One more win next week and we can breathe I reckon.

Benteke was exceptional in the 2nd half, totally unplayable when he's in that form.

Great goals from Weimann and Gabby as well (and a nice hit for the conditions by Vlaar).

Lowton and Bennett were excellent all night, as was Westwood.  Really good performance in the 2nd half, if we can play like that regualrly we'll blow teams away more often than not.

Benteke - brilliant, awesome, majestic, unplayable.
Weimann - brilliant, energetic, deadly

Bennett - brilliant, left foot like a wand, best game for the club

Well credit where credits due, Lambchop got the team right tonite for a change. Getting the 2nd after surrendering the lead so quickly was the key. 2nd half you could see the confidence flood back into them. Way i see it Wigan will be on 35 points by the time we meet them and with the goal difference now above Wigan and newcastle, anything at norwich or chelsea will keep us up i reckon.

First time this year i've been confident of staying up,but i reckon its still going to the last day.

Well we have turned it back into a 5 horse race for the last place with Wigan looking bad. But those results will also be sickeners for both Sunderland and Newcastle and can cause both of those to nose dive.

Post by: supertom on April 29, 2013, 09:59:32 PM
Wow.
That was fantastic. We tore them to ribbons. We attacked with such pace and skill at times. It could have been 10.
Tekkers was a menace. Wiemann was unlucky not to get another. Gabby grabbed a well deserved goal.
Westy was superb all game. Delph too. The full backs were excellent. Our centre backs were pretty poor first half but we got on the front foot quickly after our 2nd and never let up. Attack was the best form of defence.

Sylla looked a different player 2nd half. He didn't seem that confident on the ball first half. Made good challenges but not much else. 2nd half he looked a proper player. Used the ball very well. Also credit for Bent. He came on and was quite unselfish with the ball. Used it well, got involved in attacks.

Difficult to choose a MOM. Teks is an obvious candidate but the full backs and Westy run him close.

Great win. Goal difference looks healthier, and we go into the Norwich game looking very good. I want some consistency now. We have to keep this up because we could rip them apart.

The first time Villa have scored 6 at home in 18 years. (We won 6-0 at Derby in April 2008.) First league hat trick since Gabby v Man City in August 2008.
Title: Re: Aston Villa vs Sunderland Post-Match Thread
Post by: ktvillan on April 29, 2013, 10:08:06 PM
Difficult to see how that could have gone better really.

We even scored from a corner and didn't concede from one, and got one of the Mackem's best players suspended

Maybe should have been pushing for even more goals against 10 men instead of keeping possession but that would be harsh I guess.

Some outstanding individual performances but aside from the obvious,  Lowton really surprised me at how bloody good he looked tonight, and I was also impressed with Bennett and Sylla.

And I realised that Guzan is a dead spit for mini-me.

Tekkers is different class. I'd absolutely love one more season from him. I hope he sticks around with the World cup in mind. Play 50 games here or 25 for a club like Man City and risk his place in the WC.

3 games left. I'd fancy us to take another 6 points. Who knows we might even finish closer to mid-table than the drop zone.

Agreed on the Sylla comments. He really does like a no-nonsense tidy player. He keeps thing simple but does it well. Looks like Lambert may well have found another gem there.
I'm convinced that Benteke will stay. This team can only improve and he will have looked at Lukaku and realised the benefit to getting lots of game time. If Lukaku stay at the Boggies and Benteke stays at us, Belgium will be an extremely formidable team come Brazil 2014.

I agree. We will debate that one day over a pint. Meanwhile I'll have a word on where we choose to go on big match days for the Villa!

I look forward to that. I let a lot of people down today because of this.

Strange 'twitchy' interview from Di Canio.  Reminds me of Kerry Katona somehow....

Best thing is that it hasn't even started there. Wait until it really kicks off and he starts attacking their players as they walk of the pitch like he did at Swindon.

Of all the comparisons, Orville was not the one I expected.

Westwood, Lowton, Benteke and Guzan must be pound for pound 4 of the best signings in our post Sky history. All 4 for what, 11 million. You would see near on 50 back I reckon.

Hunger and passion shown by every one of our players tonight. Absolutely superb. I think that Sylla was my man of the match. An absolute terrier in midfield.
On a side note I had a quid on concrete as first goalscorer at 40/1 and a Benteke hat trick at 25/1. Up the Villa!!

Just awesome, I have been cacking it all day in case we didn't  get the result we needed. But Lowton was exceptional along with the rest of the team.
Benteke is a beast and all three strikers look like scoring at the moment.

If we stay up and strengthen the central defence during the summer we are looking good for the future.

Indeed, instead of buying experience  we've let them earn it together and it's starting to show, Sunderland were poor tonight, that's undeniable, but we were excellent in midfield and up front, and had 2 fullbacks playing the roll we want from them almost faultlessly.

I really hope we can grow from this, there's a lot of potential in this team and I'd love to see them stick together and see just how far we can go.

my ratings for what its worth

guzan 6 - no fault with goal. maybe got a touch lucky with graham's challenge, shouldnt be dropping the ball no matter who runs into you
lowton 9 - our best player by far in the first half, superb assist for weimann's goal. excellent on the ball throughout and defended much better than usual
vlaar 6 - great goal but some of his defending was comedy club esque. we need a new centre half badly in the summer
baker 6 - solid enough but gave away a couple of unnecessary freekicks as per usual
bennett 7 - struggled with johnson a bit in the first half when he came on to his left. was also johnson's delivery early in the second half that caused problems. but much more confident on the ball now and a far better player than a few months back
Sylla 7 - struggled in the first half to get involved but much better in the second half where he was on the ball a lot
Westwood 7 - didnt think he dominated as much until Sunderland went down to 10 men. Great delivery for Benteke's header and a solid nights work
Delph 8 - struggled a little early on but seemed to move a bit more infield as the game went on and it suited him better. Involved in a lot of our counterattacks in the second half with the ability to go past a player a big bonus
Weimann 8 - brilliant finish for his goal and improved hugely from that point on. very much a threat with one cleared off the line. Great season for him.
Benteke 9 - thought he was shite in the first half though did put Gabby through for the chance early on. Unplayable in the second, Drogba esque man mountain. Finished Carlos Cuellar at this level in the process. What a signing he has been
Gabby 8 - deserved his goal for all the effort. Involved in most of our best play and didnt let the miss in the first half get to him

Sunderland are far from out of the relegation scrap either. Johnson eventually faded out of the game but caused us problems. Rose was decent at left back with a fine goal. Apart from that to a man they were utterly pathetic. Bardsley, Cuellar, O'Shea, Larsson, Graham, their keeper was atrocious, Gardner. Sessegnon out for the last 3 games. Such a lack of technical ability in that side, now that the new manager bubble has been well and truly popped, they will do well to stay up. Stoke and Southampton up next for them are favourable fixtures but wouldnt be a surprise to see them lose both.

Norwich away is the perfect next fixture for us. They look well and truly out of ideas at the moment and we will be absolutely buzzing after that win.

He gave us no credit whatsoever. Just said that he should have got a vibe from the players during the week that a performance like that was due...that it should be a lesson that they still have work to do for the rest of the season when they might have thought it was done.

A load of shit basically. They actually started well and looked dangerous in the first half so I don't see how he can so quickly put it down to their performance. We just had too much for them and always looked like we could score against them.

Benteke - brilliant, awesome, majestic, unplayable.
Weimann - brilliant, energetic, deadly
Lowton - brilliant, up and down like a dynamo, superb
Bennett - brilliant, left foot like a wand, best game for the club

Good lad Risso, good lad.

Can I add

Vlaar.... fucking concentration of a goldfish

Don't agree. He and everyone else was expecting guzan to launch it. Vlaar  was facing Guzan at the time and wouldn't have seen the two relatively close Sunderland players. He couldn't have had a call and took a touch with pass because he wasn't expecting it. Guzan played him into trouble and however you seethe resulting Vlaar slip, Guzan didn't need to have made that situation happen.

Have to say with all those that are taking plaudits, I thought Delph was absolutely fantastic tonight. looked a really classy Premiership player. keep that going, and add a few goals, and he could actually become the player we were promised.

Absolutely amazing. Our performance of the season just when we needed it. Still work to do - I really hope they play with the same discipline and commitment next week at Norwich - but I'm gonna enjoy that one

Guzan - 6. Rush of blood to the head first half could have cost us

Lowton - 10. Perfect. Couldn't have possibly done more. Wonderful performance. I've said it before and I'll say it again, you buy championship players . . . Etc etc
Vlaar - 7. great goal, ropey first half
Baker - 6. Dominant in the air, hopeless positionally.
Bennett - 8. Best game by miles. Provided the width to balance out from Matt "cafu" lowton on the right

Sylla 7 - his energy was a real plus. Passing improved too.
Westwood - 8. Really helped to control the game
Delph 8 - he's really playing well. He's looking so much more energetic. Even Savage was saying his well he's been playing

Weimann 7 - I thought he was poor till his goal, but a real threat second half. Unlucky not to score more
Gabby 7 - a real threat throughout

Benteke 9 - average first half, unplayable second

But I just want to repeat how good lowton was. He was absolutely fantastic. If he can just get a it better defensively we've some player there.

Wat fantastic signings Guzan, lowton, Westwood and benteke have been. More of the same this summer please

Would also like to give credit to Sylla. Thought his changing down of everything was brilliant, gave the back four breathing space at times. Something we missed last Monday.

Excellent all around really.
Outstanding second half from him, just what we need. Whole night couldn't have gone better, we played with so much confidence and if that's the future it could be exciting.
The effort was there too from all, Gabby didn't stop running all night.
Serious point though, too many of the signings this year have been slagged off for not being good enough (Bennett, Sylla) but as they settle in you can see them growing in confidence.

Absolutely superb. All of them brilliant. Sylla in the middle of the park added steel and broke up the play!! The front three deadly and then the full backs got forward and were full of confidence.

We have got dunne, ireland and given on huge wages get rid of them somehow and replace them with a solid centre half, another midfielder who scores goals and another player who can play across the front three and we will have a bloody good team next season for not a huge outlay

I'd be well surprised if we don't get a bid for lowton on the summer. He's starting to look "Top4" good now he's finding his feet. Thought he was MOTM tonight by a mile with all due respect to Benteke.

I reckon he's got to be pretty close to an England call up soon.  I know he has some mistakes in him defensively but he has a great attitude and fantastic technique and will get better and better in the next few years.

Steady on. He's not up there with Walker, Richards and Johnson yet.

Give him time and he might be.

Wouldn't swap him for any of them.

Lowton's got a bit to learn defensively, but none of the above are particularly known for their solid defending.

Title: Re: Aston Villa vs Sunderland Post-Match Thread
Post by: ozzjim on April 29, 2013, 11:16:11 PM
Dave is right - Walker was good and fast as anything in the league, but Lowton is miles better technically. He is right up Wenger street in the manner in which he plays. He is also adding a million to any fee every time he goes out, and an England call up would only add to that.

I said way back before Christmas went a bit off the scale that Lowton and Westwood would play for England, and I am pretty confident on that happening.

Bennett might even have a chance. Baines and Cole are not getting younger, and Luke Shaw looks very good but is only 17.

Lowton is fantastic technically. He just needs to learn to defend crosses better, and not get so square to a winger

Everyone played exceptionally well and could be discussed in depth about how great they were.

However, I feel the need to mention Lowton. What a player. He was superb in everything he did. He seems to be getting better and better. My MOTM, but clearly understandable why Benteke got it.

Well played Villa. I'm looking at finishing 11th-ish now - ha!

The hardest thing now will be getting their feet back on the ground and focused for Norwich.

Most people could probably guess the script...

Reckon we'll hand out another tonking though.

It's funny looking at the table, if we win our last 3 games and other results go favourably, we could finish as high as 9th. I'd be very happy with that as that was my start of the season prediction! I'd take a win at Norwich and losing the  last 2 if it guaranteed our safety

No matter where people stand on what's happening at Villa at the moment, I think we can all agree that was above and beyond our wildest dreams

The negative for me is the only thing I could think of when Benteke scored that header was he's just signed his ticket out of VP,
it was a stunning header, a 22 year old Drogba on his prime, I know he's scored some crackers this season, but when the money clubs in the prem and Europe see that sort of power in the box they will be fighting to get there cheque books out

Saying all that Lowton was my MOTM, unbelievable performance, like others have already said, the best  performance by any Villa player this season for me

Excellent performances from everyone in a Villa shirt tonight (and Cuellar). Probably Lowton, Delph and Sylla's best games for us.

We've quitely been scoring plenty of goals since new year's day and yep those two wins for Sunderland have papered over their weaknesses big time. It's incredible to think how toothless we looked for most of the first half of the season going forward, this is a proper Lambert team now like the one he had at Norwich.

Talking of Norwich, win there and I reckon that will be enough for safety. Great our goal difference is better than a few clubs and will be better than Norwich with a win on Saturday.

Winning there is by no means a cert, although if Bassong fails his fitness test, it could get a whole lot easier, and a bit messy for old Norwich.

I disagree on Lowton's pace too. Baines is not that fast, nor is say Lahm, but are both technically very gifted and work very hard at their game.

That tribute was wonderful. One minute referring to a player who was a Welsh international, then remembering a bloke who worked in the Ticket Office. Great gesture from the Club. I am sure the families of those involved really appreciated it.
I wish that I had noticed Carlos clapping throughout the 19th minute. I was hoping he would be taken off so that we could have given him a standing ovation for his services to the Club.

Gabby was also my MOTM as well. Fuckin love him!
I thought Gabby was masterful tonight however MOTM in my opinion was Sylla.

Ill be honest, I thought he was complete rubbish till tonight. He was excellent though. Really good defensive midfield performance.

Marvellous,just marvellous.

I thought Sunderland were marginally the better side first half so to go in one up was very welcome.

The hunger the team showed second was amazing, even at 6.1 they were still running at full pelt to close them down.

Lawton was perfect, Sylla very good, Gabby put in a captains performance but a special mention for Delph who I thought drove us on and looked a real leader.

Fantastic night. Special mentions for Lowton who was out of this world and also Bennett who might end up proving a few people wrong based on that performance.

Sky game... vs a team in form... huge pressure and the kids delivered. Very proud tonight.

One of those nights that our young fans will be telling their kids about in 40 years. Brilliant, brilliant Villa!
Yes those are the things to treasure.
I normally take two of my nephews  to the match on rotating basis as I have one  junior ST. Tonight I took advantage of the £5 offer and took them both. I bet they are going to have a great week at school  giving it right back to their  glory hunting  mates!

Watching the highlights back, when Westwood's shot is blocked, Vlaar is standing on the halfway line. Three seconds later the ball's in the net.

Reckon he'll be very good for us next season.

I think Toronto Villain and apologies if it was someone else, said if tonight was our Bolton game from last season, what a difference. And nothing sums up how far this journey has taken us, despite the same points and league placing, in 12 months than that statement.

Sunderland came into this bouncing on 2 great results, and we stood up and were counted again. We deserve massive credit for the way we handled tonight

Vlaar, for all his failings as a player, and there are more than most would like to admit, Risso is not completely right but not far off in his scathing assessment of him as a player at the moment, he does lead the team and the kids very, very well and does deserve credit for that. All the games we have won we have either gone behind or got pegged back in, and he has not let the heads drop once. Even last week at United we played well second half and got our pride back. I hope he improves player wise to match his leadership skills.

Trying not to view things with claret and blue tinted glasses and mebbe Sunderland's Di Canio inspired rise from the ashes was over-stated by the media , but we were rather good tonight.

Even with the iffy at times 1st half and the sending off, we thoroughly deserved the win. I've said before if lambchop could get more than 5 players playing well for 90 minutes we'd be scary and he actually managed it tonight.

Last season and this have been my eleven year old son's first as a season ticket holder. It has been painful to see how hurt he has been by some of the home results in that time. Tonight he is on cloud ten. Also, my old next door neighbour who used to take me to the Villa as a kid even though he had two son's of his own has been poorly lately. He was at the game tonight on his eighty something birthday and it was his first game for quite a while. Three points, big improvement on the goal difference, great performance and players who have had lots of kicks in the teeth who must tonight feel ten feet tall. And a post match thread where the only tension or arguments will be about who was man of the match as there were so many candidates. For me Gabby, Lowton and Bennett were fantastic. Also, since I came back from the game I have seen Benteke's towering header three times on SKY and I swear he jumps higher every time I watch it!

I got way too emotional about this result. I think the intense pressure involved, coupled with the margin of victory (especially after the tonkings we've had this season), led to too much screaming and shouting at the screen. Some tears of relief at the end, I admit it.

Great performance by everyone, but a very special mention for Lowton, that was as good a performance I've seen by any Villa player in a very long time.

Thought Weimann had a quiet game but his touch & finish was top class & vital.

I have to say, for all that has been wrong this season, we have always tried to do things the right way. Credit to Lambert for sticking to his principles & not panicking, the table may not show it but things are much brighter than they were this time last year.

Now lets finish the job on Saturday.

Haven't read the thread and I know Benteke will rightly get the plaudits.  But for me Lowtons performance was simply incredible. On this performance it's hard to see why we are 5th bottom.

It's simple. Lambert made a massive gamble by trying to build a team of young, exciting players, it could have (and still could I suppose) backfired horribly, but tonight showed exactly what he is trying to do, and if we survive this season I reckon we are in for a many more nights like this.

I feel genuinely sad for those of you that were not there tonight. I don't think we will ever hear a crowd like that again (DC5's theory that we are better off without the non-committed proven beyond doubt, I would say).

Sunderland started very brightly and were targeting Bennett with a lot of success.  Gabby seemed to be completely out of sorts. And then all hell broke loose.

When Matty chested the ball down to make the interception and then went on the run which led to Weimann's goal, it was just about the only time this season I  have seen us attack the space instead of passing it regardless. He was my MoM, but everybody played their part.

Vaughan I think.

"Thought Weimann had a quiet game but his touch & finish was top class & vital."

The great thing about Andi is that even in his quiet games he still pops up with a major chance. Last week he had a header cleared off the line by RVP, hit the post at Stoke and missed a good chance against Liverpool.

As soon as the final whistle goes at Wigan get him on a new 5 year deal. Said at the start of the season he'd get 10 goals and he's comfortably surpassed that.

I reckon he could be touching 15 league goals next season.

Agreed. Any time Benteke scores now the instant joy is slightly tempered a few seconds later as I see him take in the applause and wonder how the fuck we're going to hold on to him even if we do stay up. Daniel Levy will have AVB in his ear all summer about stumping up the cash for him. Can you imagine ending-up getting something derisory like Adebayor and £10m for him?! Anyway...there'll be plenty of time to lament his leaving when it happens. For now, thank Christ(ian) we have him.

I love this bit.

Quote
In Villa's second goal there was evidence only of the virtues of this team. Lowton controlled a cross-field pass and ran effortlessly with the ball before selecting a pass of Coutinho-ish precision to allow Andreas Weimann to roll in a silky finish. And throughout an almost bizarrely one-sided second half, as Villa's coltish midfield out-passed and out-ran heftier opponents, Villa really did look like that Villa of the imagination, with Benteke dropping deep and Weimann and Agbonlahor menacingly purposeful in their forward thrusts .

What a night. I'm sitting here drinking cognac from the bottle waiting for the re-run on SKY.

The good thing about the game was that 6-1 was a reflection of the way we played and not how bad Sunderland were. I remember thinking after 25 minutes that it will be tough to score and that at least Norwich won't be this tight.

Brilliant goals when we needed them, and if Sunderland looked ragged towards the end it was because we steamrollered them in the second 45.

Man of the match for me, the crowd. Raucous and committed. It's the first time in three years that I wished I was there.

Re Lowton/England. There aren't many wingers at that level, and he may not be fast as such but he's not slow either. The way he ran at a retreating defence for the second goal was a bit reminiscent of Reus last week. I'd pick him.

The intelligent way he cut inside and the skill in putting on the pass for Weimann  spoke volumes for the lad.

The best right back display from a Villa player since John Gidman.
The best right back display from a Villa player since John Gidman.

Too young to have seen Gidman and not read past page 1 of the thread, but Lowton was immense tonight. ABsolutely superb performance, oozing confidence and class. To think we plucked this bloke from obscurity with Sheffield United, and the fans we asked weren't exactly describing him as capable of playing at this level.

Should we stay up this close season will go a long way to determining how I feel about football. If our promising youngsters buy into the project and show some loyalty to the man who has elevated them to that position, I will sing until my lungs break for them. Should the best of them take the money and run, I think I might give up. We shall see.

But tonight - up the Villa. Lets all enjoy such a performance while we can :-)

He, and Bennett, deserve a lot of credit

Hate to criticise but the lad still cant defend. A good footballer, yeah. But as a fullback you cant stand 5 yards off your winger, especially INSIDE OUR PENALTY AREA at 0-0. As he did.

Sorry.

“The mountain of humanity known as the Holte End must be included in the scoreline. There are times when a crowd can be very much part of a performance. This was one of them.”

Sleepless night , replayed the game in my head all night and just couldn't switch off - what a great game for us and so pleased that the whole team played well last night - Lowton was exceptional, the forwards superb and the defence fairly solid - loved the way our midfield three performed and i thought sylla had a really good game .

Along with the clinical finishing of the strikers it really was a night to live long in the memory.
We are not safe yet but I feel we will go to Norwich and win, they are in a bad run and lambert knows their weaknesses- many reasons to be positive!

Well, I'm still erect.  What a feeling after a season spent pacing around like a mad man every weekend.  First time the missus has watched the game with me, she is not missing another until we lose again (which will be never of course).

So much to be positive about and I am still refusing to count any poultry until maths has us safe but so much of the doubt was put to bed tonight.  The much lamented left back was absolutely fantastic against a side with genuine width.  Nullified them, drove us forward.  Lowton has one or two faults in his defensive play to iron out but my word it was like watching Cafu going forward - immense performance.  The midfield three were unbelievable and completely repaid their manager's faith.  Sylla had comfortably his best game so far.  Westwood gave his usual performance.  We just need him to produce it against the really top sides, then we have quite a player on our hands.  Delph deserves special mention because for me he is a massive reason for our big improvement over the second half of the season.  It all started at Albion away, before then I would never have wanted him near the side, he is now one of the first names on the team sheet.  I think he'll add some goals to his game next year as well.

As for the front three - they have been exactly the same for two or three months, the balance of their attributes is too much for the vast majority of Premier League defences.  I really want to cuddle Benteke.

Well done to everyone that went last night. Been having a rubber neck at the Sunderland sites, they said it was a great atmosphere....see below

think its more to do with the acoustics of Villa Park to be honest. The sound seemed to travel well between stands and to be stuck in a corner surrounded by it was deafening. Fair play to them, they got behind their side and it worked - much like it did for us against Everton last week
Yep sound definitely travels better in there than it does the sol like.

If the noise from the south and swc travelled like that the sol would be rocking
But fair play that atmosphere was immense like, one of the best ive witnessed at an away ground

I see it this way.
Every time he scores means another club won't be able to afford him.
I've said previously if clubs come calling, bidding starts at £40m

Now THATS what I called football.  Not very often I would disagree with giving man of the match to a hattrick striker, but Gabby won me over last night, and a special mention to our oft berated left back Bennett who after a shaky start was superb, and Lowton had the run of the pitch on the right.  What a bloody fantastic 90minutes.

What a day this is (Tuesday over here). Watched the first 15 mins then had to go to work and caught up with it via text updates. Rushed home to watch the whole game, which I've just seen. Absolutely brilliant performance, all players were great, but take a bow Matt Lowton, that was the best performance by a full back in a Villa shirt since Kenny Swain was playing.

Can't stay long today, I'm now going out to see The Buzzcocks tonight, end of their NZ tour in Christchurch. Life doesn't get any better than it is today  8).

Not much more to add than has already been said.

Great game and a huge 'big up' to Sylla, who had his best game for us so far.  The midfield three never stopped running.

I don't expect it to change the minds of some of our more critical members, but I hope it would at least show their is an aim to what we're doing, even if you still get pissed off with how we're getting there.

Me too. Got in late after the match, then pub afterwards, and I just lay there replaying the goals over and over in my head. I'm knackered this morning, but so, so happy.

That was one of the best nights down at VP for absolutely years. I sat in the upper Witton Lane stand, towards the Holte. At times the noise seemed to be just rolling down from the Holte in waves (and we were adding to it too!). Incredible atmosphere.

Best Villa night probably since we trounced the Blues 5-1.

Ironically I thought we were pretty poor for the first 20 odd minutes. Positionally we were getting in each others' way. Other than Baker (who I like but has become very suspect positionally), they were all superb second half.

As with many others on here, most special praise goes to Matt Lowton, he was simple perfect last night, a real class act and it's not often a right back can steal a MOTM from a hattrick hero.

Am wondering why we didn't play 433 at OT, it looks easily our best formation. I thought Vlaar played well covering from Baker, Bennett was much better, the midfield were great in the second half and Gabby and Andi were a constant menace.

What was your favourite goal? Think mine was Benteke's 2nd. Would like to see more of his aerial dominance in the box. He absolutely mullered Cuellar, who I always felt was overrated by our lot and also I think their keeper was desperately poor for a guy receiving rave reviews much of the season.

I think like a few people on here i was in shock last night, that result came from nowhere although in fairness one or two in the pre-match thread predicted that we'd give someone a pasting at some point.

I was still a bit nervous at 4-1. I only really started to relax once Sessengon went off.

I think against the better sides we end up too deep in a 4-3--3 and the midfield doesn't support the strikers enough.  N'Zog is there to then provide that link between the two, but he's a lazy shit, so we lose so much energy from the team when he plays.  It's a puzzle that will be solved when we have a player that can operate in his position, added to our attacking threat, while also putting a shift in.  Possibly Gardner when fully fit or possibly a new signing.

What was your favourite goal?

Weimann's for me. Lowton's reading of the game, the interception he took on his chest, then the sweeping crossfield ball out to Andi when I thought he'd play the easier ball in towards Benteke. Weimann's sublime first touch to set himself up for the curling shot - more of a pass really - into the far corner of the net. Perfect.

It was an important goal too, from the point of view of the match situation at that point. Gave us the half time lead which was vital.

Agreed, but I think the best part of that goal was actually off the ball.  Watch it again and pay attention to the starting positions of Benteke and Gabby and then where they run to.  I've seen it before but last night was a perfect example of how the 3 of them work together.

Yes I thought we were a bit nervous and not able to get smooth passes going almost how we were post Xmas period. This resulted in ball ending up with Guzan quite often and there were number of long kicks looking for a knock on from Benteke to no effect.

Nothing like the feeling the morning after we've given somebody a good old fashioned shoeing.

I need to get on with some work rather than scouring the web for the umpteen reviews of the game but the scouring is just so satisfying!!

It seems like forever since we had a night like that at VP, it was a great performance from all of them and all of us.

After all my trials and tribulations of last year this was the game that reminded me of why we do it, why we put up with those crap performances in terrible weather. A night when crowd and team seem to all be together and a reaffirmation of why this is a special club to support.

We were so wrapped up in it we missed the last train so had to go back to the pub and get them to call us a taxi but nobody cared, we all just carried on talking bollocks with the biggest possible grins on our faces. Sent a text saying, or so I intended, "missed last train, getting cab" and got one back saying "how are you getting home" but was too busy enjoying myself to take much notice. When I read it back this morning realised I'd put "can" not "cab", which explains the less then overwhelming reception.

It's such a good feeling and I really hope the players carry this on to the Norwich game. According to my Norwich supporting friend both Turner and Bassong are likely to be out, so our forwards could have a field day. It would be wonderful to be pretty much safe after this weekend.

I totally agree Paul. I come out in a cold sweat when his name comes up on the transfer thread as a possible suggestion as he is just the sort of player we should be avoiding with the widest berth possible. He wouldn't get anywhere near starting in any team if the standard in the Premier League wasn't so poor

That goes down for me alongside some of the great European nights, League title-winning games  (and occasional Cup ties) over the years I've been fortunate to witness. The atmosphere was at its very best from the off, the team responded and to a man played their hearts out. The confidence was pouring out of the team in the last half hour. Given the importance of the game for the club, it was stunning. And every Villa fan should also be more confident some of these young lads are coming of age, while any more performances like that and Gabby will be a true Villa legend. Still a job to do, but we all needed that.

I see it this way.
Every time he scores means another club won't be able to afford him.
I've said previously if clubs come calling, bidding starts at £40m

I think he'll have been told to stay put for another year. World Cup coming up, why rock the boat. Guaranteed starter at villa, have a great World Cup campaign and put yourself in the shop window.

I think I'm in love with our second goal. Everything about it makes me want to marry it, buy two one-way tickets to the Maldives and spend eternity making sweet, sweet love to it.

The run from Benteke, gathering defenders as if he was a magnet and they were nothing more than steel tacks, moving them all to the back post.

Lowton. The spirit of Cowans inhabited that boy at times last night, because the ball in behind was lifted directly from the great man's repertoire.

And Andi Weimann. Explodes into the space, a phenomenal first touch with the outside of his right boot, and in one movement opens his body and delivers the perfect finish.

I do hope I don't become blase about such goals when we start banging them in on a weekly basis, I'd hate to cheat on this one!

We were talking about the same thing Chris. A few times he stepped up like that. Lowton reads the game very well and anticipates the pass.

I'm really glad to see someone else viewing the run from Benteke the same as I did, it really was excellent, bardsley was left in a hole, chase Benteke and leave a gap for Weimann or leave Benteke and see him unmarked on the edge of the box.

It's Benteke's instinct for making the right run like this that makes me rave about him so much, it's the least visible part of his game but it's easily his best attribute (and he has a hell of a lot of good ones).

Interestingly I still think he has a lot to improve on which is frightening. His towering header last night was probably the only second header of its kind he's scored (was it Reading the other?) and he could easily add an extra 5 goals like that a season, he's got such a leap on him.

Also, I sometimes feel his runs in the box when we have it out wide aren't decisive enough.

Just shows how good he could end up being!

A quite fabulous night to be a Villa fan.  The attitude of the players was a joy to behold, every one of them giving their all, exemplified by Andi Weimann who having had two shots in succession cleared off the line is seconds later up by the half way line trying to win the ball back.

Last night, i returned from Berlin with my better half and passed Villa Park just before kick off. We had all our luggage but we kind of looked at one another as if to say 'shall we?'

We didn't. Arse.

However, it didn't spoil my enjoyment of it at all. I have to say, even though we followed it all on WM, the Villa joy was so delerious it almost felt as if we chanced our arm luggage and all. So thanks to the team, but as many thanks to the thirty seven thousand that made it so memorable for those that couldn't make it.

As a postscript: i went out to Tesco after the final whistle to pick up a few essentials for the morning. It wasn't until i got a text from a mate who was actually there that i realised i'd been wandering round the supermarket for ten minutes and nothing was in my basket.

Oh and my one gripe from last. Why the smeg don't they put on any extra buses after the match? I was at the 7 stop within 5 mins of final whistle and still had to wait nearly 20 mins for the first one to arrive. Which obviously got packed quickly so went past most of the other stops without picking anyone up. Surely someone at can have the bright idea that a crowd of 38K+ may need more buses than the usual night service. Planks. I got home quicker from Stoke than I did last night from VP!

If proof was needed that some journalists don't know what they're talking about, then look no further than Neil Moxley's player ratings in the Daily Mail. Mignolet gets the same marks as Guzan despite letting in 5 goals more and Carlos and O'Shea get a very generous 6 out of 10, the same mark given for each our midfielders.

Oh and my highlight of last night. Was it the scoreline? One of the goals in particular? The atmosphere? No, it was before the match when I was walking across the North Stand car park. A car stopped and the driver waved to let me cross, the driver was Sid! I wanted to shout SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIID and start bowing, instead I gave a casual wave of thanks. I'm dead cool me.

I wrote on here a little while ago about how disillusioned i was during the Newcastle game and how i left at half time and actually shed tears of disappointment at how far we had dropped, and how crap we were. Last night i cried again,i am an emotional sort of chap, but i cried tears of absolute joy last night, i left the Upper Witton and joined the throng on Witton Lane as the Holte emptied everyone was singing as they came down the steps, sang as they walked up/down Witton Lane.....Tell me when was the last time that happened????
Last night was brilliant a proper team performance from 1 - 11.....i can eulogise about Benteke or Lowton but last night all of 'em deserve equal credit. Even Paul Lambert - i had my doubts, they were all quashed last night.....he is the Man!!

I've had the day off today and was very grateful I didn't have to get up this morning as I felt as if I'd only just gone to sleep when the alarm went off (I was definitely still awake at 3am).

When I got home last night I set the Sky+ for the 1.30am showing of the match which I watched as soon as I got up and I also watched it on TV again at lunchtime.

Wonder if I'll ever get fed up of watching it?

Must make sure I watch Midlands Today later as they're bound to show the goals!

I just want to echo the praise for the players and the feeling of euphoria that has been with me since last night. It felt so good to be part of the Holte End last night, I haven't had that electric feeling at a home match for a while. The noise for most of that game puts other fans to shame, so proud to be Villa even in dark times like these. The drive home was a delight, singing all the way and laughing at the Sunderland/Newcastle fans on Talksport. Let's get the job done at Norwich and look onwards and upwards.

They all played like lions from what I saw (just the first half as I had a meeting, when I turned on my phone for the score afterwards I nearly fell over). We just need to get those extra points to see us safe but last night was just what we needed, we have owed someone a tonking and how chuffed am I that it was PDC.

Back too late last night to post and at work all day.

Took a kid to only his second match last night [first was Fulham] - spent the journey home trying to convince him it's not always like this!

It was a great night - a positive release of the frustrations of 3 seasons - Villa you owed us that!

Still a lot to do with this team but they went forward in the second half in the way I had hoped they could.

We sang and danced in the Trinity so you know it was a good night -  more of the same please...

I was in Upper Witton Lane but had heard that the Trinity were on good form. When I used to stand on the Holte years ago, I always felt the atmosphere was at its best when the other stands joined in. From where I was sitting, there was a wall of noise all around, with the North Stand chipping in very well. That move to put our fans in the Lower North Stand was a master stroke.

Regarding kids getting such a baptism, this is great stuff. They are hooked for life. There was a picture in the paper this morning with Benteke celebrating in front of the Holte and the range of ages of people in the stand was from very young to elderly. They had one thing in common and it could be seen on their faces. This has been coming a long time. Let's hope it continues.

Like it!

Public transport to matches is appalling.  Does anyone remember when you were able to board busses for VP from Dale End FOC to Church Lane and back again? They were all lined up after the match to whisk fans back to town. Why can't we have that again?

It was massive, and also a complete phantom, so I'm taking that as a good omen.

4-0 Villa.

Magic shit.

Yesterday was my boy's 3rd birthday. I had the day off, took him to Thomasland at Drayton Manor, we had the complete run of the place with barely another soul there, and then came home, kissed him goodnight, had that shit and went down the Villa.

I don't think there will be many days in my life as good as yesterday.

Yes, the best we've played since Arsenal away at the end of Bent's first season when we won 2-1.

Excellent performance, the midfield trio looked to have a great balance, Delph looks like the player we all hoped for, Westwood continues to improve and Sylla is rough around the edges but shows real promise i think. Would still like an experienced leader to come in there next season though, let the other 3 fight out for 2 places.

The front 3 are awesome, no improvement needed there.

Defence still needs a bit of improvement, lets not kid ourselves about the goals against this season, but Lowton looks awesome and Bennett is improving a lot also.

Play like that in the last 3 and we will be fine, must admit i didn't see that performance coming.

The key was that we kept on attacking. We never allowed them time to attack and get at our shoddy centre halfs. I mean early in the game, Baker and Vlaar were all over the place positionally. I did feel like it might be a disaster waiting to happen. Ron's goal just kicked us on, and after their equaliser, we thankfully pushed onto the front foot again rather than capitulate.

With a decent system and keeping ourselves on the front foot as much as possible, we'll be okay. This season, and going into next. That is the key. That is how we'll outscore opponents and give our defence less work to do.

4/500? Disgraceful from the only Premier League team in England's so called 2ndcity

I'm wondering why there's apparently 1,900 of us with tickets for Saturday who, I take it, just aren't gonna bother going.

There's nothing more entertaining then reading other fans desperately trying to find things to slag Villa off about.

"shit pies" was a personal favourite, and as we all know is a lie.

I think this lot are made for us to play against, and we'll finally smash the shit out of someone at home for the benefit of our long suffering supporters.

Mystic shit.

Just about to leave when my stomach decided to 'move south'.

And you met me. What a day!

How come you never mentioned you look like Brad Pitt?

That was the cherry on the icing on the cake!

I'd have stayed a bit longer mate, but I had one eye on our kid wandering off as I'd left me phone at home and hadn't yet got my ticket.

And the looks are a burden. I think it intimidates women as they shy away when I approach.
