2-0 Home win. Please. Pretty please. Pretty please with bells on.
Sat 16.3.13 KO 3pm.
Benteke 42, 71
EDITED TWICE to cater for sheer stupidity.
-
Us lots Them 1.
-
Us win Them lose.
-
I have a feeling that we are going to make it hard for ourselves and lose this one. A point would be OK.
-
Please please win. Just to see our points tally start with a 3. Just to win 2 games on the bounce.
If we do it'll feel like, god its that long ago I can't remember. It'll probably feel like that boil you cant get to and its been there for ages, then finally it bursts and all the nuisance in your life has passed
-
They really are nothing special just because of two recent wins against mediocre opposition..............3 1 to us, Benteke, Clark, Weimann
-
2-0 to us. Weimann and Benteke. 'Arry sent packing. An entire city to breathe a sigh of relief.
-
We need to win this, stop QPR dead in their tracks.

Agree, they've hit a vein of form.
They seem to have a 'Win or Bust' attitude, which seems to be working just lately.
Our confidence is improving, too.
Can see this being a hard fought draw

Same here, I predicted a couple of weeks ago that we'd win at Reading and draw this one, so I'm going to have to stick with that.

I agree Tom, i think a hard thought 1-1 draw.
-
Win. No last minute nail biters please.
-
I think some of the worst Villa performances I can recall were at home against QPR. The Beelzebub hat-trick springs to mind
-
we're going to win and big. I can sense it. Benteke to give Samba a battering and score twice with Gabby grabbing the third and Charlie with one late on. 4-1 us.
-
2-2
With Hoilett running at Lowton we're going to give away free-kicks and corners and with Samba, Mbia, Zamora and Remy challenging for them then there's no way we're not going to concede.
-
Am desperate for Lawrenson to call it for Redknapp.
-
He probably will.
-
The way they were queueing up to nosh O'Neill off on MOTD was nauseating.
-

dont forget the press were exactly the same with their fawning and preening over melted wellie face before their home game v us!
-
"It's not the manager's fault, the defence needs sorting out"
Because that's nothing to do with the manager.
-
Did you also notice the way Hansen was patronising the presenter. He really thinks he is some kind of broadcasting superstar.
-
2 -1 to the Villa.
Gabby & Benteke .
-
Am desperate for Lawrenson to call it for Redknapp.
Sure too, according to his predictions QPR would be in 6th place on 50 points and us on 20 points.
-
I should be feeling positive, but I'm worried about this one. QPR are coming into form. And even though from the highlights on AVTV we played pretty well going fwds v Reading, our defending was again absolutely appalling. Reading could easily have had 3-4 goals, and most of their chances were from really poor mistakes by Lowton, Baker, Vlaar, Bannan and Sylla. QPR are decent at the back, and they've got dangerous players in attack. I can see this being a really depressing game, just when we've found a chink of light.
Sylla, for all the plaudits after the match, didn't do anything positive of note in the highlights, though he's presumably not going to be that sort of player.
On the plus side, our forward players do look a threat. The big question for me is whether to play N'Zogbia or a third midfielder.
-
I guarantee that if QPR do go down everyone will say it was mark Hughes' fault.
-
Am desperate for Lawrenson to call it for Redknapp.
Sure too, according to his predictions QPR would be in 6th place on 50 points and us on 20 points.
And Liverpool would be champions every year.

Toughest game left at Villa Park this season.
I would take a draw knowing the other games we have left this season.
However, as per usual, I can see us letting in one, of not two. The best we can do is to play to win, even if we take the lead. We can't "shut up shop" so there's no point trying.
-
Did you also notice the way Hansen was patronising the presenter. He really thinks he is some kind of broadcasting superstar.
It needs a shake up. Rarely watch it for obvious reasons just lately, but when I do I hover over the mute button. Why do we have to suffer their opinions? O'neil and 'Arry never criticised because its all too matey
-
It is too matey and if the BBC had a pair of balls between them they would change the lineup on a regular basis.
It would save a lot of money too. Nobody tunes in to see Hansen.

We rarely look convincing at home. Last 15 against Southampton and second half against Newcastle we just went for it. I would like us to do the same second half this weekend, steady start then go for it. So yes, let's forget trying to sit deep and hold on, lets win it in style
-
There's a disconcertingly positive flavour to this thread!
-
That usually means the post-match thread begins with two pages of swearing and capital letters.
-
No more negative shite please. Villa win 3-1 and we will beat the Bindippers aswell easily.
-
I'm skiiving off work 'ill' for this one, I hope it'll be worth the potential bollocking.

I would but then I wouldn't have any money to go up the Villa! ... then again I can rarely go because I'm always working on match days. It's an endless cycle.
-
What? We have to play again? Saturday was hard enough. This is brutal.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Hansen is paid something like £40,000 per week by the BBC, which is ridiculous for what he contributes.
-
In previous games Samba has struggled to deal with Gabby's pace. I want to see us go 4-4-1-1 with Gabby playing behind Benteke and making runs off his flicks.
-
I can't see this being a draw. So toss of a coin between who wins really. I'm gonna go for us. 2-0 with Weimann and Gabby getting them. I think the fact their CBs will put all their effort into stopping Benteke will free up lots of space for the other attackers. Hopefully they will stick with 4-4-2 which will help us to dominate midfield. Lowton vs Holleit will be key to keeping a clean sheet I guess.
-
A nail biting odd goal victory.
-
When did we last win two on th bounce in the league? Gary mac?
-
QPR have sold out their allocation. Can't remember them doing that before.
-
When did we last win two on th bounce in the league? Gary mac?
Yep. Arsenal and Pool.
-
Villa 3 Twitch P.R 1
Beneteke 2
nzogbia
-
I think we'll win 3-1 aswell. QPR for all their spending still have shite like Clint Hill at centre half. We'll get plenty of chances against their back 4 but so will they as they're playing Holliet now and I've always rated him.
What's important for me is for once we get a quick start at home. Thinking back to Wigan, Southampton and Newcastle and we were terrible in the first half of all those games and the opposition scored the important first goal.
Once we got going against Newcastle for example, we saw they were nothing special and could've easily forced a draw but so many easier to be in control when you don't actually have to chase the game.
-
I don't care if its the flukiest jammy goal ever seen at Villa Park. 1-0 will do me.
-
One thing is nailed on...we will concede. I'm going for a very nervy one all.
-
Benteke to score winner with 2 mins left and Harry to get hit with same 50p coin...stay in the dugout this time you nosey old git.
-
When was the last time we beat an 'Arry team?
-
I'm going all out and predicting a Villa clean sheet.
2-0. Weimann and Benteke
-
Villa win. Really, REALLY looking forward to "The Beast of Belgium" versus Samba.
I'm meant to be around Walsall for a family do, but also meant to be working in aberdden. Wondering if it's worth fecking both of to go to the Villa.
-
Redknapp, post-match on Sat was on about how playing with two wingers and an open, attack-minded team had got them motoring. I do worry how our full backs will cope with in-form Hoilett and Townsend while Remy and Zamora will be a handful for Clark and Vlaar.
We haven't scored from open play at VP since the last sighting of white dog-shit was reported. Gonna be tough.
-

I agree. Hoping I'm wrong though.

If they do play that against us then our midfield will just dominate the game like they did against Reading. If they only play three attackers to combat our three in midfield then I think we will manage to hold them out. Either way I'm optimistic.
-
I just worked out that the last time villa scored a league goal at villa park from open play was . . .
Andi Weimann's second against Man Utd on 10 November, over four months ago.
That doesn't help my confidence levels!
Please someone tell me I made a mistake.
-
2-0 Home win. Please. Pretty please. Pretty please with bells on.
Sat 16.3.71 KO 3pm.
Benteke 42, 71
Bollocks, I'm 42 years late. Did we win?
-
Well spotted!
-
Nervy 2-1 win. I fancy Weimann to score. Remy will score for them.
-
Asking as we don't concede first ill say 3-1 villa win. Benteke x2 and gabby to score
-
1-0 to us and a rare clean sheet.
Gabby to score.
-
I think them playing 4-4-2 away from home is playing into their oppositions hands, whoever they may be.
Its alright at home when you have got to win, especially when your pitch is the size of your average back garden, but at a big pitch like Villa Park, I think they will come unstuck, especially given how poor they are. I cannot see them playing it to be honest.
I am minded to go with three central again, but would not be adverse to seeing Charlie come back in either.
-
Went for a win last Sat, gone for a win this Sat. Come on the Villa, prove me right again.
-
3-3.
-
Bit of a tense start but we get the first goal to settle nerves and go on to be 3 up with 5 minutes to go, QPR then score and we start shitting ourselves but run out winners after they hit the bar with the last kick of the game. 3-2 to us.
I really believe we have to win this to stay up - a defeat won't put us down mathematically but we really need to put some breathing space between us and the dead men, and we're running out of 'winnable' games. To be honest if we can't beat the likes of Southampton, Wigan, Newcastle, Norwich and QPR at home we don't deserve to stay up.
-

The pitches are the same length, and there's only a couple of yards in the width.

Once more Villa, 3 points please please please.

There will still be loads of corners and free kicks hurled into our area and they have taller players so I would like to see Baker continuing. They are also one of the growing number of teams who, in my opinion, foul the goalkeeper at every set piece.
It will be ugly but that's 'war'.
-
Last week Redknapp picked a team to play against O'Neill. He knew full well that he could put Lord Lucan in central midfield and still expect to dominate play.
To all intents and purposes that is exactly what he did when Remy was subbed late on. Lucan even scored.
Redknapp may not be that sanguine against us. Depends on whether he fancies his chances of exploiting our right flank in the same way Reading did.
We are overdue two wins on the bounce, a goal from open play, a clean sheet and a ref that understands the laws of the game. It's got to happen some time.
-
Although QPR have been poor its fair to say that this is almost a new team and not the crap one that got Hughes the sack. plenty of signing in january, a change of system, and players like Taraabt being dropped also have helped. This will be tight and I think if we win we'll get a huge lift that should see us through. However, with the press urging QPR on and the full eyes of the media being on this one i think we'll struggle. A draw at best and me to stop watching from about 50 minutes in.
-
Christ knows why I'm feeling optimistic but I fancy we'll win this one. I think Ranger's will huff and puff a bit. I just think Benteke could have a field day against their backline. Samba's good but the rest are average, and I'd still fancy Benteke against Samba anyway.
3-1
Benteke
Wiemann
Gabby.
Stefan Moore for them. He still plays for them right???? :P
-
Villa never win back to back matches. Can't see a win I'm afraid.
-
Villa 3-1 QPR
Benteke, Gabby (Finally) and Weimann.
Samba for them. Header from a corner.
-
Fucking hell I hope to god we don't lose this one. I really don't want to see Harry Redknapp marching over the pitch to wave his fist in the air at the QPR fans. In addition to this I don't want to read any more shite about 'Arry and this great escape. I'm already sick of it. I'm desperate for us to beat them.
-
I've said elsewhere but I'll also post it here - I think we'll win if we get a big crowd.
-
I've gone for the villa win, playing counter attack at home. It'll be a shit your pants game with us nicking either a 2-1 or 3-2 win.
-
Both teams are sure to defend very deep for this one. No way Redknapp is going to have the likes of Clint Hill holding a high line against Agbonlahor. On the opposite side of the pitch, our equally slow and cumbersome back four wont be pushing too far past 20 yards from goal considering the danger of Howlett and Remy getting in behind our defence. With that scenario there will be a lot of space in midfield and its imperative we play three players in there against the 2 from QPR, Park and Mbia. The absence of Delph robs us of choice in that section. Kea has never done anything of note in a Villa shirt and is struggling with injury in any case. The lightweight duo of Bannan and Westwood with Sylla on the right of the three, gave us a healthy dominance in midfield albeit against a very poor Reading duo last time out and must be retained from the start.
Its been a long time since Gabby has done it in a home game for Villa. Even though he scored last time out, with the certainty QPR are going to defend deep I really think Nzogbia coming in would be the correct selection for this game. This would allow added flexibility in the front three with Weimann and Nzogbia able to switch positions when we are in possession. While Gabby played well last weekend for sure he will be up against better full backs this time around. The ability of Nzogbia to link centrally with the trio in midfield would help us keep the ball longer. I expect there to be a nice bit of space between the QPR midfield and their backline at the weekend which is where Nzogbia can add more threat than Gabby.
Where QPR will undoubtedly seek to target Villa is in our full back positions. By all accounts Hoillet gave Gardner a bit of a roasting last weekend and he is facing a player in poor form in Lowton next weekend. Id have taken Lowton out of the side about a month ago due to his poor form and he was frankly appalling last weekend. The half fit duo of Zamora and Remy up front will present problems but Id prefer to see QPR going with 2 up top than bringing in a third man into midfield. The longer the game goes on the more the QPR forward line will struggle due to lack of games this season. Its the kind of game in which if we score early on I think QPR might struggle to get back into it. However Weimann, Nzogbia or Gabby dont provide the greatest of protection out wide to our full backs. Neither Bannan or Westwood have an ounce of presence or bite without the ball and our centre halves are poor in the air. Expect QPR to shove all counterattacks out to their widemen and try to get crosses into our box.
Can definitely see a high scoring game. If they go with 2 up top we should be able to monopolise possession. When he have the ball we seem a decent side and if Benteke keeps his form up, I can see the likes of Weimann getting into great positions again. However we are criminally weak defending crosses into our box and a clean sheet is most unlikely. 3-2 to the Villa, with a late QPR goal giving us a right scare late on having being the superior side for the majority of the game. I think many of us are overrating QPR quite a bit. They are below us for a reason, have injury problems throughout the side and if we get ahead I'm not sure too many of them are that bothered.
-
Nice analysis. If it was on the A-Level curriculum for Sports you'd be A*ing it to Oxford.
-
I think some of the worst Villa performances I can recall were at home against QPR. The Beelzebub hat-trick springs to mind
I can still see bloody Peter Eastoe scoring for them in the League Cup semi final 2-2 draw in 77.
For the first time this season I think I'll avoid the game, my nerves just won't take it. I don't see us winning it, despite a recent overall improvement we still look very frail in defence and I'm expecting QPR to capitalise on it.
0-2 defeat.
-
I don't think they're good enough to win three on the bounce and we're shit enough not to win two on the bounce.
Draw for me - 1 all with Weimann getting ours and then them late on to send us home miserable.
-
@MatKendrick: Trouble and strewth: Chris Herd's #avfc season is over because his fractured foot requires surgery
-
I have gone with a win for them for reasons that if I put us down to win we have no chance , think its going to be a stressfull game for us all
-
Villa 1 Twitchy Bagpuss & Gang 2
-
2-1 to us Benteke and Weimann scoring.
-
Maybe go 3-5-2? We know the balls going into the box so get 3 centre-halves in there. I reckon Baker is the best in the air anyway so sticking him out wide makes little sense. Lichaj on one side with Bennet on the other. Sylla, Westwood, Bannan/N'Zog and Gabby - Benteke up front.
-

This. I'd be really dissapointed if we don't have at least 36k. This is one of the biggest games at VP for years.
-
The only player I fear of their's, is the Bent-like Remy.
The rest are a bit shitty.
-
Any type of win will do!
-
In previous games Samba has struggled to deal with Gabby's pace. I want to see us go 4-4-1-1 with Gabby playing behind Benteke and making runs off his flicks.
Yep, seem to recall Samba hauling Gabby down for at least two penalties in previous matches against Blackburn.
-
I've always been puzzled by the appeal of Samba, Always thought he was a bit lumbersome and lacked mobility.
Certainly not worth £100,000 a week.

this match is pivotal. qpr sold out their allocation yesterday and i really hope we get a big crowd.
first home saturday 3pm game for 2 months!

I think he is competant at this level. Nothing more. Obviously head and shoulders above anybody in our sorry defence. But there is a reason that no top 4 club ever made a move for him. Reading the QPR forums, many of them think he will have Benteke in his back pocket. I seem to remember the Dippers saying the same about Skrtel before we faced them... :D
-
My son always picks a match to come to for his birthday, he's not seen them win on any of them so 0-0 it is.
-
2-2 draw for me
-
I think we should be more concerned with Samba in our penalty box, not the QPR box.
-

I've just had a quick glance at my copy of "Aston Villa - The Complete Record" and I can assure you that Villa do win back to back matches.

If we win will we get 6 points this time ?
We beat Reading yet when I checked the table it was still only the usual 3 points added.
All those pundits lied !

No. But it was funny at the beginning of this season when Liverpool kept losing!

Big issue: Aston Villa's Ron Vlaar counting down to "immense" six-pointer against QPR
12 Mar 2013 22:29
Relegation rivals meet at Villa Park on Saturday and fit-again Dutch defender is desperate to build on last weekend's victory over fellow strugglers Reading
Aston Villa captain Ron Vlaar has pledged to fire up his team-mates for the “immense” relegation six-pointer with QPR.
Both sides recorded wins, over Reading and Sunderland respectively, last weekend to boost their survival hopes.
Now, they are preparing to meet at Villa Park on Saturday.
Vlaar, 28, missed the Brummies' slender defeats to Manchester City and Arsenal, but returned from injury to marshal Villa to victory at relegation-rivals Reading.
And he is anxious that his team continue the improved recent form which saw them beat West Ham and draw at Everton last month.
Holland centre-back Vlaar said: “That was a good start at Reading and we look forward to the next game.
“We knew these two games are immense for us. We know it, and QPR know.
“But besides the last two games against very good teams in City and Arsenal, we have had good results.
“That is what we have to do - we know we have to work hard and try to win games.
“We want to make everybody happy, with 34,000-35,000 people at home.”
Villa’s victory at Reading was their first three points on the road since December 15 when they won at Liverpool.
Vlaar added: “It was a very important win for us and we really needed this one against another team in a similar situation.”
And Vlaar was also eager to praise young defensive colleagues Ciaran Clark and Nathan Baker.
Clark, 23, was at fault for the only goal in the 1-0 home loss to the champions City, while Baker, 21, sliced into his own net at Reading.
Vlaar said: “It is not easy when something like that happens. But they keep their heads up the young players.
“They have to go on and it didn’t affect Nathan in the game at all.
“Ciaran too against Manchester City, I don’t think he thought back and that is very good.
“He knows what happens, but you have to get through it.”
-
Nervy 1-0 win
-
Changed my mind.
3-2 to us, Gabby (2) and Benteke.
-
I've always been puzzled by the appeal of Samba, Always thought he was a bit lumbersome and lacked mobility.
Certainly not worth £100,000 a week.
If he was in our team there wouldn't have even been an issue of conceding from corners.
That may well be true Soccer but I agree with the original point - and if he was that good, he wouldn't be lumbering around the likes of QPR and Blackburn. Always thought he is very average vis a vis the hype that seems to surround him
-
Villa win and lots of goals in a very open game. They will attack us as they need a win and I can see us picking them off on the counter.
-
I will eat my proverbial hat if we win to nil. We don't do clean sheets. I said after Man City that we'd win the next two, so I guess I should stick to that, that I wouldn't be surprised if we draw it. Whatever the result I still think there are easier games ahead - I think we'll pick up six points against Sunderland and Norwich, for example, so this game won't be the be all and end all.
I'm missing the game as I'll be in the Lake District. I'll probably have saved myself a couple of heart attacks in the process.
-
I am hoping Bent is fit . Comes off the bench scores the winner and runs over to Twitch
and says ' Could your mrs score that Twitchy '
-
As said by Ads and elsewhere, QPR will be hitting us from out wide spraying crosses for our brittle, confidence-shaken defence to sort out. They'll have their big boys to get on the end of them, no doubt. We have to find a way to stop that, in short.
Last game we dominated through the midfield, we will need to do that again and perhaps get Bennett in with Sylla to help in with defence.
Oh, and Redknob's into mind-games now apparently... ARTICLE (http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/4787021/Harry-Redknapp-column-This-is-Paul-Lamberts-first-test.html)

We should have beaten them in the first game.
I'm going for 2-2. Benteke and Weimann.

3 -1. We go up 1 nil with Gabby. Remy equalises that sees us under the cosh until a Samba own goal takes it to 2-1. We then hit them on the break and Weimann sets up a Benteke winner. Harry Rednapps head explodes in a similar fashion to Scanners when asked in post match interview "Were you upset about the breaking news about your team being out on the lash last night"
-
i reckon we're going to smash bagpuss and his lot at least 5-0 and qualify for europe. But i have just come off medication
-
That Redknapp article is dated 9th Feb.
-
We should have beaten them in the first game.
I'm going for 2-2. Benteke and Weimann.
Really? My remember it as we scored early on, they equalised straight away and then battered us for the rest of the game with Guzan outstanding.
Mind you we never win at Loftus Road and QPR don't generally travel well.
-
I pray we stuff em, but I think it may end up a draw 2-2.
-
Bit pessimistic on this one - our home form is awful and they have picked up. And their annoying twunt of a boss has a good record at VP
-
I am really not convinced by this supposed QPR revival. Before the last two games, they were putting in some of the most insipid performances in the top flight all season.
They beat Sunderland, who were abysmal, but even in doing that, they looked unconvincing. They won at Southampton totally against the run of play.
Don't get me wrong, I am fully aware of just how feeble we can be at home, I just don't buy this QPR revival thing, which seems to be built on the yearnings of the media for "Harry" to keep them up as much as it is on anything more solid.
-
Completely agree with you there Paulie. They've managed to beat 2 equally dire teams and all of a sudden the 'Appy 'Arry hype wagon is full speed ahead. It may give the QPR players much needed confidence going into the game, but when they step out on the pitch they are still not up to much. If we play without fear and take our chances early then 3pts are there for the taking...a good performance and a win is the very least we deserve for the poor results at home this season.
-
Our win last week was massive. We HAVE to follow up with another win on Saturday.
And we will. But it'll be a very nervy one nil with Weimann scoring the winner after 36 minutes.
-
Win is important but so not letting QPR gain on us. 7 points difference would be huge at this stage.
This could be a great Sat, Eng beat Wales and win the Grand Slam and Villa beat QPR....
-
Let's remember also, despite all this scare-mongering about QPR's attacking threat, they are still the lowest scorers in the league. Even against Sunderland, their first was a fluke and the other two were screamers. We should be cautious given how awful our defence is, but we shouldn't be resigned to conceding against this lot.
-
I'm sticking with my prediction that this will be a draw: 2-2.
Not great, but probably a result that we can live with.
(I'm fairly confident that Liverpool will beat Southampton and that Reading will lose to Man Utd.
The only worry is that Sunderland will get something out of the match against Norwich.)
-

Yep, that's about where I'm coming from.
Nothing I saw last week suggests we've suddenly improved defensively. It's all down to whether the strikers can compensate for the goals we'll almost certainly condede.
As always if you like a wager, forget the no-score draw and stick your mortgage on the in-play 'raised blood pressure' market and 'dangerously high pulse rate' stakes as injury time approaches.
-
Routine win for Villa. Might be just 1-0 but us in total control the whole match.

Thats the thing though. Our awful defence makes us worried about anyone.

Agree Peter and Remy looks like a decent finisher. They've also got some decent wide options who can exploit our defensive weakness in the full-back areas.

Remy is the one player who has me shivering like a shitting dog.
I reckon he'll be licking his lips at the prospect of playing against our defence.
Luckily, our superior firepower will kill them off.

Think there will be a big crowd for this one, all the main areas of VP are virtually sold out,
I really hope so. A big crowd and a rocking atmosphere is just what we need.
-
35,000 tops
-
36,500 ish
-
40,000 if QPR sell there allocation
-
If we continue as we have the last few weeks, we will play quite well for periods of the game, but have at least 30 minutes of looking like we don't know what the round thing on the pitch is.
I believe it will come down to making sure we score the goals when we are on top and ensuring they don't score too many when we forget how to play.
I think we may need 3 goals to ensure a win, but I thought that last week too. It might not have always been pretty on Saturday, but there was some sort of resilience to hold on to the lead, which we haven't seen this season. That does give me hope. Vlaar may not be at the standard of centre back we are used to, but I think his presence is important.
I'll stick my neck out on 3-1 win, but am worried it will be 2-2 (which won't be the end of the world).

Under former manager Martin O'Neill, high-flying Aston Villa were used to getting plenty of attention.
They boasted England internationals like Gareth Barry and Ashley Young, frequently wrote big cheques and chased Champions League football.
How times have changed.
As Villa's fortunes have waned so has national interest in the claret and blue.
But that will all change this weekend ahead of the visit of QPR, which has grabbed the public attention.
It is now lined up for live radio commentary, can expect prominent billing on Match of the Day and Villa boss Paul Lambert will face a large media turn-out tomorrow at his weekly press conference.
That's all because the ramifications of this match are simply huge.
A Villa victory will be a hammer-blow to Harry Redknapp's much publicised and expensive revival at Loftus Road.
While an away win will make it three straight wins on the spin for Redknapp's men as his unlikely survival mission gains momentum.
Managerless Reading can appoint Harry Houdini as their next boss and they will still go down as far as I am concerned.
The Royals lack Premier League quality in their squad and now the transfer window is closed, I reckon they are doomed.
But several clubs also remain vulnerable to be relegated - particularly Villa if they lose on Saturday.
Yet a Villa win would not only push QPR nearer the drop but leave Lambert's men on 30 points and be a giant step towards safety for them.
Villa would then have eight games left- including winnable fixtures against Stoke, Fulham, Sunderland, Norwich and Wigan.
Already Villa skipper Ron Vlaar has described this weekend's fixture at Villa Park as "immense".
Encouragingly, Villa are now finally performing more consistently to back up Lambert's public utterances.
The Scot has stubbornly insisted his young side will come good and are not afraid of the pressure.
And performances against Everton, West Ham, Arsenal, Man City and Reading have all been promising.
At Reading they showed character to bounce back from conceding a demoralising own goal to win 2-1.
But Saturday's clash is going to be even more fascinating.
Villa will have to deal with the expectations of their home fans which is a factor they have struggled with in recent years.
It will be tense, nervous and edgy - and I am already looking forward to it!
I just hope Jermaine Jenas doesn't return to Villa Park to score a crucial goal because that would literally add insult to injury.
Jenas looked a promising loan signing when he joined Villa in August 2011 from Spurs on loan for the season.
But the midfielder managed just three appearances before missing the rest of the season crocked.
It left Villa with a massive bill for his mere 105 minutes of action as they were forced to continue to shell out his salary.
QPR already appear to have got better value from Jenas after he scored last weekend in the home win over Sunderland following a January loan switch.
And the way Villa's roller-coaster of a season has gone, you wouldn't bet against him smashing in another stunner this weekend.

Cheers Eastie, get the rum at the ready - think I might need it!

maybe i'm being over optimistic then,
but this is a big game for us, and Villa fans normaly come turn out in times of trouble, saturday

It's always been the way. We have a hard core who come to watch the Villa and a floating support who turn out (or not) for the occasion.

I hate to admit it, but being as I have to pick only about 8-10 home games a season to go to due to work commitments, I often find myself going for the ones against bigger teams. Singing and the feeling of camaraderie are the main two reasons I go to football and there's usually a bigger, better atmosphere and the off chance of an 'I was there' moment against the likes of Man United and Chelsea.
I wish it wasn't the case but it is.

Fair enough. I've always been the opposite myself. I prefer to go to games that I deem more winnable. For me, the ultimate experience is to see Villa score some goals and win matches. I also think it is slightly small-time to only go to games against the bigger clubs (I not saying this applies to you) as it is almost like such fans are going to see the opposition rather than the Villa. Akin to when lower league fans only turn up when their team is drawn against an EPL team in the cup. I have always been of the opinion that it is this type of support against lesser teams that has contributed to our inconsistant home form over the years.

For the few games a season I and MVjunior have travelled up for, I have tended to pick the more winnable games. If only to keep MV junior interested. But the fact still remains that we haven't seen them win for 4 years. Even in the MON years we always seemed to select the shock losses or draws.

I think you're damn right about the point in bold.
I do go just to see the Villa, it just so happens that it's often more enjoyable for me when a Sky team comes to town, and I think a lot of people my age are the same, just another issue of modern football I'm afraid :(
I do try and get an even spread though, I'd say my favourite two games this season at Villa Park have been Reading and Man United, and I was at the 3-0 drubbing by Wigan.
-
I'm with Neo. When I can't afford a ST and have to pick and choose I generally go to the less attractive games.
1) More chance we'll win
2) Cheaper tickets for those games so I get to go to more games
-
I'm in no position to criticise anyone for not going to enough games.
-
Villa in an edgy 2-1 win the Beast gets both
-
As I said earlier in the thread I feel pessimistic about this.
We haven't scored a league goal from open play at villa park since November for God's sake. And we're not exactly 'good' at set pieces.
A win would really set us up nicely. But it's a must not lose game for me.
-
I'm not sure either - I reckon Arry's finally on to something at QPR and we are the most Jekyl and Hyde of outfits.
I think they'll be goals so i'm going for an open 2-2. Would absolutely kill for a win though.
-
I see this game being like last season's Bolton game. And we all know what happened then. Hope I'm proved wrong.

Tickets booked. On our past record that should kill any chance of a Villa win. Th club should be paying me not to attend.

Quite a few media men predicting a melted face win here, probably due to pure hope a they would enter as wa~~ing frenzy writing about the great escape on sunday morning. Im worried, no doubt, we just need luck to turn our way. Man City was a prime example, yes clarke messed up but i would say more than half of referees would have given a foul. Also, the penalty shout could have gone our way and its not inconceivable we could have landed 3 points from that and be pulling clear now.
If anyones on the fence about going down, get bloody down there! I would say pressure on the referee could be as vital as getting behind the team. This will come down to 1 or 2 big decisions.....
-
If we concede early we're knacked.
VP's large pitch and the opposition's slightly more defensive approach don't suit our narrow style of play, which is why our home record is poor. As someone else said above, our set pieces are gash (floated corners, FFS!) and we give the ball away cheaply.
Draw.

Where has this perception come from that Villa Park is a large pitch. It is one of the saller in the League, and apparently only West Ham is narrower.

We will kick good old Harry's arse all over the place tomorrow. 3-1 Villa.

I was surprised. And if you go onto the internet football ground guide even "4th division" clubs, such as Wycombe, have bigger pitches.
-

No, a draw isn't bad but will feel bad if we throw away a lead and then draw. It's a must not lose game though, we don't want QPR closing the gap. Having said that, a 2nd straight win would provide a massive release of pressure and something of a feel good factor going into a 2 week break.
-
Anyone know when we last beat a Harry team?
I believe it was March 4th 2006. Villa 1 Pompey 0. Milan Baros, who for all the shit he subsequently got, scored a few important goals for us that season.

Yes he did. Was that season he knocked in a couple against Blues at home?
I liked him actually, thought he was good footballer. He came across as lazy but i think that was just the way he played his game.

No doubt baros was a class act but we only saw glimpses of what he could achieve - i liked him too.

Houllier obviously thought Baros was better than Carew.

We can talk about our defence, but then any team with Clint Hill at the back is going to have a problem.

Over 38,000 expected for tomorrow. All lower tiers sold out, plus the North Upper and Trinity Middle.
-
Villa 1 QPR 2
-
Villa 3 - QPR 2
Think we'll go 2-0 up, they'll get back to 2-2 and the Beast will get the winner in the 93rd minute.
Bring on the valium.
-
@thegoalzone: Darren Bent still not available and Fabian Delph still suspended. PL impressed with Yacouba Sylla and is likely to start tomorrow
-
If we concede early we're knacked.
Are you sure? Stamford Bridge and Goodison can't be wider.
http://www.openplay.co.uk/blog/premiership-football-pitch-sizes-2012-2013/
I was surprised. And if you go onto the internet football ground guide even "4th division" clubs, such as Wycombe, have bigger pitches.
Interesting; I'm also surprised and am now back-peddling like crazy.
Still think we'll draw tomorrow, though!
Thanks for posting that website, MV.

I always wonder about differing pitch sizes. Should they not have a set guideline so that all pitches are the same size?
Not that it makes a hell of a lot of difference I suppose.

The flexibility in pitch sizes is more applicable to the grassroots game, where finding groupnds of uniform size can be difficult.
I guess, also, the FA would want there to be some benefit in playing home games over and above having a majority of home supporters in the crowd.

WTF is going on with Bent? Have we sen the last of him in a Villa shirt?

Darren Bent is pissing me off.

think there is a minimum size.
I suppose its about perception.
At QPR in the second row of the upper tier I could jump onto the grassy area behind the by-line. At Villa Park in the third row of the Upper Holte, I would splat to my death in row 40 of the Lower Holte.

Anyone know when we last beat a Harry team?
I believe it was March 4th 2006. Villa 1 Pompey 0. Milan Baros, who for all the shit he subsequently got, scored a few important goals for us that season.
Remember that. At the time Pompey looked down and out. I felt that they would inevitably go on a run though and was fearful before that game that it might begin against us. Luckily for us, their run began the game after. So we just missed it.

No such luck now, huh?

By Dean Wilson | 15/03/13
Harry Redknapp has piled the pressure on Aston Villa ahead of their crunch game on Saturday after taking his team from 'no-hopers' to survival contenders.
And he reckons the home crowd could help him do just that if they get restless during a massive relegation scrap between his bottom club QPR and the big Midlands club.
Redknapp admits that his side were written off a month ago, but a run of two defeats in the last nine games as well as back-to-back wins has changed the landscape.
"I think they’re a massive club – Villa and they’re a young team," said Redknapp. "The pressure of the home crowd can play on people’s performances.
"People wrote us off four weeks ago. But now we’ve got ourselves back in the picture. We were no hopers so the pressure is not so much on us.
"It is a big game for sure. We’re both in a relegation battle so it’s going to have an important bearing on the league. It’ll make a massive difference to the look of the league table.
"The lads are ready to go and all along I felt we could do it. I said it was going to be tough. I still think we can do it.
"We went to Chelsea and won. We had that five match unbeaten run before being beaten by Swansea and Man United. That’s only two defeats in nine games.
"We’ve got to be up for it. It’s Premier League football. It’s a good club and we desperately want to stay in the Premier League."
And Redknapp knows he has got the teams around QPR looking over their shoulder again, just when they thought they were cast adrift.
"It's not good when you see the results coming through, and we've been there," he added.
"You see the results of the teams around you, and obviously you want them to lose because it makes a difference to everything.
"They're probably looking and thinking "oh QPR again." They probably wrote us off and suddenly we’ve put ourselves into the pack again.
"That is only today though, we need a result at Villa."

I just can't remember that game. I don't know whether that tells you more about my memory, or the quality of football on display.
-
Hang on - 'from no-hopers to survival contenders'?
Given how long he's been in charge, that's not much of an achievement.
-
The press wank themselves into such a frenzy over Redknapp that come May or when they're relegated in April, all they will be left with is a messy, bloody stump.
-
I don't know one person that likes 'arry. Is this a nationwide thing?
-
This time tomorrow I will have stopped shaking like a shitting dog and will be murdering a pint in the Holte Suite, whatever the result. This is no good for the nerves whatsoever.
-
I don't know one person that likes 'arry. Is this a nationwide thing?
It told me alot that when I checked out the Spuds forums following his sacking, the majority were happy to see the back of him. This is despite him perhaps being their most successful manager in recent history. For me he is just another MON; vastly overrated by the media but not rated at all by most fans of the clubs he has actually managed. 30 years in management and one FA Cup to show for it. Enough said.

Surely going from 20th to 19th would be enough for a knighthood?

Pop onto the Everton forums and you will see many of their fans have similar views on moyes, as we had on o Neill and spuds on Harry - it may look ok from the outside but fans of those clubs see a very different manager to the press and fans of other clubs. I used to think moyes and redknapp did decent jobs but fans forums suggest otherwise.
-
24 hours from agony or ecstasy. Or ambivalence. I never entertain the idea that we're not going to win, so 3-1 us, Benteke, Gabby, BB, and we'll score theirs too, Vlaar with a cushioned header past Guzan as he comes to collect a harmless cross.
-
I would love to get the three points but a draw would probably be better for us than them - defeat would be a huge blow - i think both teams will score and it will be a nerve wracking occasion - i see it being a score draw.
-
We will win tomorrow.
-
We will win tomorrow.
Like the positivity. Just stuck £20 on us w/ William Hill. Never been more sure of a win, fucking hate QPR and all.
-
I really am confident we will beat them tomorrow, Benteke will make Samba look like the pile of poo he is. They do have a class keeper, but suspect he will be busy tomorrow. They have to win and can see us catching them more and more on the break as they get more desperate. I go 3-1
-
Give the ball to Gabby and tell him to run straight at Samba, he'll shit himself (Samba that is).
-
Have you ever heard of a 9-pointer?
-
3 points for a win.
-
3-1Villa. Bannan, Benteke and Weimann.
-
Just seen the mighty Clint Hill is lining up alongside Samba, is there a worse player ever to have played in the premiership?
-
4-1, Benteke 22,65, Gabby 31, Weimann 76
Bagpuss to be twitching like a crack head in the dugout!!

I'm a bit worried about that winger, Townsend. He seems to like playing on the right and cutting inside, something he did very well in their win over Sunderland. Massive call for Lambert on who to put at Left back as they're most likely going to be dealing with him all afternoon. I'd probably go for Bennett just to match his pace, he'd run rings around Baker.
-
(http://oi48.tinypic.com/2hq6mv6.jpg)
Very good!
-
2-1 to Villa.
Sylla and Zog before second half.
QPR score 5 minutes into second half, with the rest of the 50 with us shitting tons of bricks.
-
Closer we get to this I think it's a huge moment in our season. Draw wouldn't be the end of the world but in likelihood we'd be looking over our shoulders until probably the last day.
Win and we'd have momentum and being on 30 points they'd be a great opportunity to get survival over and done with before April is even out.
Not even thinking about the other option, we'd be back to december 29th again in squad morale.

I always wonder about differing pitch sizes. Should they not have a set guideline so that all pitches are the same size?
Not that it makes a hell of a lot of difference I suppose.
Some pitches look way bigger than others, that's usually down to the differing camera angles, for example Highbury always looked tiny with the camera nearly on the pitch.
From perception we've always looked like we've had quite a wide pitch (ideal under MON but not so much now) whereas Chelsea, QPR and of course Stoke look tiny. Old Trafford looks massive.
Stoke changed their size when they went up so teams wouldn't get behind them.
-
I don't know one person that likes 'arry. Is this a nationwide thing?
I don't know one person who wants them to survive among my other club supporting mates.
-
Just seen the mighty Clint Hill is lining up alongside Samba, is there a worse player ever to have played in the premiership?
Shaun Derry but he dosen't seem to be in their midfield anymore.
-
Derry certainly didnt play last weekend, they played park in the centre with m'bia. Do people think N'Zogbia will be back tomorrow and if so, will it be Bannan or Sylla to drop out? Also read about the left back situation, agree with earlier comment that may be tempted to play Bennett ahead of Baker
-
That's why I'd be tempted to go 3-5-2. We know our weakness is the ball coming into the box, so do the opposition, so we haveto expect alot of it. And we will probably concede. So, why not go with 3 centre-halves? the best one of 3 when the ball comes in tends to be Baker so don't play him where he clearly can't play. Put Bennett as left wing-back and give him licence to get forward. From what I've seen he likes to get forward, has nice feet, and can cross, and also importantly, he can keep possession in attacking positions. So play to his strengths. A defensive minded left-back isn't it.
Who you put on the right is tricky and where the system may get found out. To bring Bennett in means dropping someone from the Reading game. You wouldn't put weimann at right wing-back so it would beLichaj. Which would mean weimann would be dropped and I'm loathe to see him dropped for tomorrow.

no were better in a 4321 we havent sunk that low that we need to change for qpr

chinese :D
-
Peter W, think we have to stay with current system rather than change it for a shite team like QPR. Personally I would put Bennett left back and N'Zog in the middle for either Bannan or Sylla, probably Bannan.
-
chinese :D
Good choice :)
Starving now.
-
I really believe we'll win this. QPR were pretty fortunate in the games they won, they're still a poor side and we can beat them.
-
We will win this one.
3-1.
Benteke(2) Westwood .
-
Its my birthday today so we better bloody win for a change. I don't normally get much joy, but confident we will. 2 - 0, Benteke and Baker.
-
The confidence in here is very re-assuring. My only concern is that this is Villa we're talking about - we never seem to do things the easy way.

Is this our most important game ever? A win and I think we'll be safe, a defeat doesn't bear thinking about.
Harry you ******.
-
Our most important game, no I wouldnt say so. Even a win wont make us safe, will still need some more.
-
We haven't won two league games back to back for nearly two years. How shit is that?! Lets hope it's not still the case this time tomorrow.

All fans have a good moan about the manager when things aren't going well. But I very much doubt many Evertonians would be happy were Moyes sacked tomorrow.

Harry you c***.
It's up there. Would do wonders for the confidence of the team as well, got some tough games coming up to after this (this is tough too don't get me wrong but QPR at home isn't Man. Utd away.)
-
may be most important game in last few years, wont dent that.
-
Although a part timer this season, for the first time in my life, my son and I are coming up to the game today.
from deepest Dorset. Very nervous. Up the Villa.

Good on ya!

Its raining consistently at the moment so conditions will not be easy for heavy centre halves like Samba. By that I mean having to turn quickly and retain his balance without slipping. I have a feeling Weimann is going to be crucial today, at least I hope so. I also hope Bent is fit enough to be on the bench and come on if needed.
Even if we lose (perish the thought) its not the end for us but it will be a major setback from which we will do well to recover.
Villa 2-0 .

By James Nursey
Christian Benteke has been tipped to land the knockout blow in his heavyweight battle with Christopher Samba.
Aston Villa's 6ft 3in Belgium striker bagged his 16th goal of the season in their win at Reading in LAST weekend's six-pointer.
Benteke has been one of the signings of the season since joining from Genk for £8million last summer.
On Saturday, in a classic relegation struggle, Benteke will be up against QPR's giant centre-back Samba after his January move.
Harry Redknapp paid Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala £12.5m for 6ft 4in Samba, who is picking up a £100,000-a-week.
But Benteke's manager, Paul Lambert, reckons Samba will be hard-pushed to come out on top at Villa Park.
Lambert said: "They are two big lads going head to head together. But Benteke is playing exceptional football for us. He is full of confidence, which is great.
"Saturday will be a physical battle, but I haven't seen too many beat Christian up throughout this season.
"The main thing for us is to win the game and if Christian can contribute to that, great."
Villa's victory at Reading made it seven points from their last five matches.
Their two defeats in that spell were both by a single goal and to two Champions League candidates - Arsenal and Manchester City.
Villa's American chairman Lerner has scaled back his investment of both money and time at the club.
But Lambert reckons both Lerner and the fans are pleased with Villa's recent displays after a torrid festive period that saw an 8-0 humiliation at Chelsea and heavy home losses to Spurs (4-0) and fellow strugglers Wigan (3-0).
The Scot revealed Lerner did fly over this week to show his backing: "I have a good relationship with the chairman and the chief executive and they see what everyone else is seeing.
"Ever since the turn of the year the improvement has been vast. It is growing together which everybody wants to do.
"We are trying to build something to be a right good side. I spoke to the chairman on Thursday when he was over and he has been very good with me."
Saturday's game is huge, but Lambert is confident his Brummies won't choke as they chase back-to-back league wins for the first time since May 2011.
Lambert added: "The good thing from my point of view is I can see the lads are playing really well with a lot of confidence to win.
"We only know one way to play: To go and try to win. The crowd see what is happening and they are right with it. That adrenaline from the crowd can spur us on and not frighten them.
-

I'll administer a good beating if we don''t.

We will win, no problems. 3-1
-
2-1 for me. 67 games without back to back victories means we are well overdue. Having said that, I had a nightmare last night that we went two down in the first two minutes!
-
The whole of the media want QPR to beat us so it would be so sweet if we win today, heart says Villa win but head says a draw, c'mon you Lions.
-
Heading off to VP soon. Not felt this tense about a game in a while. I fancy us to nick it 2-1. Can't see QPR not scoring tho.
-
Cannot remember the last time Villa won easily with no problems, and today won't be any different
2-2 draw
-
On my way to the pub now after a morning in the office. Time for a few nerve settling pints!
I still think we will win mind. Lots of goals, a nail biting affair but a win.
-
Waiting for my mate to come and pick me up. Always bloody late.

Time to head off into town and then onto VP. Come on you Lions!

Nervous, tense. Yes.
Let's have it.

beer beer beer

I've heard at least two separate talking heads on the radio refer to the latest QPR 'renaissance' being down to 'Arry's Magic'. They've won 3 games since he's taken over, are still rock bottom and he's a magician all of a sudden.
Pantomime vilain he may be, but it would be really spiffing to send the king of barrow boys home to sandbanks with a frown today.
-
Bloody hell Baker's own goal was terrible last week.
-
the first Benteke/Samba challenge will move Villa Park six foot closer to my front door which is a bonus. I hope those hatches have been battened down.

Sitting in my Shipboard Office , half an hour off the South Coast of Mexico , surrounded by Oil & Gas platforms , rigs etc with flares shooting into the early morning sky , hardly the views I used to have travelling on the Outer Circle ( No 11 ) from Harborne to VP , back in the day . How I envy you all with the talk of " just leaving home " or " waiting for my mate to pick me up " etc .
No TV or Radio here so I,ll be relying , as usual in these situations , on you guys ( thankyou in advance ) , AVTV & the Beeb to keep me up to date . K.O is at 9am here . Impossible to concentrate on work stuff but needs must etc .
C,mon you Villa Boyzzzzz ....please ? , a win would give me 15 more match free days of hope & optimism , a bit like pre-season really ! .
Someone please ive the lads a proxy ( no , not poxy !! ) Cheers for me .
Saludos Amigos y Amigas .........Viva la Villa ...................Godzvilla! .

I think some of the worst Villa performances I can recall were at home against QPR. The Beelzebub hat-trick springs to mind
Oh shit! I was there. What a noise when Beelzebub decided to come on. I had put that out of my mind for ever. Until now.

Clearly you have been away a while. Try going through six ways island at Erdington on number 11 now days!

True aftab , in fairness the No 11 was never my preferred route but it was the closest , usually caught a VP Special bus from Downtown . These days , when I do get over its the Train or a Taxi . You lost me at 6 Ways Island , Erdington , so I guess it has been a while .........to long a while in fact ...........UTV......Godzvilla ! .

Easiest game of the season. Villa win.

Another 3 points please, Villa. We don't ask much, and back to back wins for the first time in nearly two full years would be great.
Come on!

Easiest game of the season. Villa win.
He, he, what have you been drinking? Easy and Villa definitely don't go together!

Benteke to score winner with 2 mins left and Harry to get hit with same 50p coin...stay in the dugout this time you nosey old git.
