Less than an hour to go, team-sheets should be in by now.

Spot the error from the Beeb:

Quote

With four of the Premier League's bottom five in action tonight, we should be in for a tense affair.

Paul Lambert's Aston Villa are in desperate need of a win. After being dumped out of two cup competitions in a matter of days by Bradford and then Millwall, confidence must be at an all-time low.

1841:

Daily Telegraph's Henry Winter on Twitter: "Lambert in #AVFC programme: 'What is required now is resolute character, a refusal to lie down. Collectively, we must come out fighting'."

1840:
Aston Villa v Newcastle (1945 GMT)
We have a humdinger of a game for you at Villa Park.

A fixture which down the years has seen fireworks from giants of the Premier League; a hat-trick from Dwight Yorke, a treble from Andy Carroll in a 6-0 mauling of the Hammers, another hat-trick from the forehead of John Carew.

Goals from Juan Pablo Angel, Paul Merson, Patrick Kluivert, Alan Shearer, Stefan Beinlich and Stephen Glass, no less.

Team-mates Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer fighting with each other on the pitch and both seeing red.

It's had it all - but can we add in the dreaded phrase of 'six-pointer' to tonight's match?

Benteke and Bent?

Interesting. We have such excellent attacking options now whereas that was always our problem area as far back as I can go. We have gone from being strong at the back but lacking the cutting edge to having plenty of (potential) goals with a very leaky defence.

I fancy us to score so we need  a big performance at the back.

That midfield is as weak as watered down piss.

Looks 532 or 442 with Clark in the midfield?...either way I can see us being under the cosh tonight.

#NUFC: Krul; Debuchy, S.Taylor, Coloccini (c), Santon; Perch, Cabaye; Gouffran, Sissoko, Gutierrez; Cisse.

Would they be playing a 442 with Perch right wing?

That's a lot at the back. Harsh on Weimann to be left out considering that those players ahead of him are hardly firing. Still, no Gabby is a bit of a bonus.

Newcastle midfield sounds good - a deep lying 2 in cabaye and sissoko - the only saving grace could be that so many new players don't gel together on a windy night in January.

Well they've never worked together before. I can only hope that Clark gets pushed up into midfield otherwise the Barcodes will rip our midfield to shreads.

Overall a shit team selection. Not happy.

What a pathetic line up! Westwood/Bannan against Cabeye/Sissoko. Hmmm...I wonder who will win that duel? Weimann dropped for Bent FFS! Was Lambert at the Millwall game? What did Bent do to deserve a start? Really hope this is Lambert's final game in charge.

That midfield is the difference between where we are now and where we were then. For instance,  Swap Bannan, N'Zogbia, Bennet and Westwood (even though he is good) for Petrov, Milner, Young and Downing and I think we would be a comfortable top eight side chasing Europe.

More likely three in the middle, Perch, Cabaye, Sissoko. Against Westwood and Bannan. Ouch.

Gutierrez and Gouffran either side of Cisse.

I think our only chance is that their new signings don't adapt.

TBH, unless we got players in, no matter which combo was in midfield we were going to struggle. The only hope we have is that Sissoko has a touch of the Makouns and not the Tiotes.

Playing Benty in a struggling side means you are effectively playing with ten men. He contributes nothing in terms of build up play which puts our paperweight midfield under even greater pressure. I fear this could be another evening of frustration and misery. Baz is quickly becoming a fixture in this side when he would not doubt struggle to feature in your average Championship side. If we don't bolster our midfield by Thursday we are in the doo-doo. Still, fingers crossed as ever. UTV.

Any particular one?

What has it come to that I am gutted that Dunn is not in the squad, even in the knowledge he's only been training for 2 weeks after a 6 month lay-off?

I agree. I would probably have gone:

Guvan

Lawton - Dunn - Clarke - Backer

Westward - Bannon

Wyman - Island - Abonglibar

Bentecky

Who are those guys and which team do they play for? Understand if English is not your first language, but the spelling of names is the same in any language.

Murphy asking good questions of Lambert, on 5LiveExtra now. Fair play.

What did he ask?

Rather than the generalities that you answer with, are you prepared to criticise specific parts of your teams play?
Could you blame the fans if they came to the Newcastle game, expecting for once that their team bloody well put on a performance for them? etc.

To which Lambert replied with general, non-specific answers. In fairness he's always been steadfast in saying he will never criticise individual players.

Not sure if my nerves will last the night.

Aston Villa, helping other teams and players get rid of unwanted runs since ........

Lets hope all other matches go the correct way so we at least stay 4th from bottom.

The problem is that we have contrived a system here where we not only have no width, we actually have no centre either. We have at least one player hanging around like a spare prick at each end by picking 3 centre backs and two strikers. Given how clear it was what Newcastle were going to do with their midfield, to basically play without any players in the middle third is, I'm afraid, the worst tactical decision possible.

I would give him the job based on that comment alone, I think.

I couldn't renew my ST this year due to work committments and a 270 mile round trip and felt really bad.... I don't now. I have bought every home and away shirt since 1974 and used much disposable income into the club. I just can't anymore , it's so painful. If I performed ths poorly at work I would get sacked.
We need someone to manage that has previously had claret and blue blood tt understands our culture, club and fan base

I suppose I'm in no position to talk, typing this from my desk in Lancashire, but fans of every other club I can think of would be hurling all kinds of abuse now. Throwing season tickets at Lambert. Throwing seats at Lambert.  Burning the Stars and Stripes in the centre circle. But the Villa?  We're going down with out any fight on or off the pitch.

Quite right.  The grovelling apologies for his failings make me want to chunder.

2 big hard midfielders and we are different team, less pressure on defence, more ball for the attack.

Only if you get rid of Baker and Clark from the defence, they're nowhere near good enough.

This has just made me laugh out loud and scare the cat.

Bannan, Westwood, Lowton, Bennett, Baker, Clark, far too weak and too slow.

Pardew has got it spot on tbf, press us when we have the ball, and we stand off them far too much.I like Baker, but was he doing for the important 1st goal.

Either push Lowton and Bennett right up, or move Clark into CM.Bring Ireland on for Bannan.

Bannan and Westwood have been absolutely rubbish, but Lambert's basically thrown them into the middle with no help anywhere near them whatsoever. Tactics should be designed to maximise your players' strengths and minimise their weaknesses, but Lambert appears to be determined to magnify absolutely every flaw our players have individually with this astonishingly poor formation.

I actually feel sorry for the players in a way. That formation is almost guaranteed to make them look bad.

Bannan and Westwood each have two players to mark, their opposite number and the advancing full back. Lowton and Bennett are often outnumbered two to one. Newcastle had options free every time they came forward. We on the other hand are crowded out and can do little but hoof.

Add in the fact that some players are not good enough to do what is asked of them and 0-2 getting off lightly.

FFS Lambert this formation stinks of goals against. Sort that out now and get some proper midfielders tomorrow.

On a normal day and circumstances Newcastle would sit back and defend their 2-0 lead.  With our team they know they might as well carry on going for it....very sad!

I don't get it.

It looks like we've genuinely decided on some year zero policy where we have to get relegated.

That is absolute, absolute fucking gash, and it's getting worse.

If we are going to try to stay up, then I absolutely refuse to believe anybody thinks that squad is strong enough. It's beyond pathetic.

Week after week, no midfield, and we have no options there. Look at the effect Sissoko has had on Newcastle, then look at our predictable seen-it-twenty-times-this-season powder puff midfield.

There is nothing, I'd say they look like a bunch of amateurs but I've seen better organised and quality amateur teams. There's no system, no ability, no passion, no clue, no fucking nothing.

There are tribes in the Amazon who have probably never even seen a football.   I'd back them to outmaneuver us too.

Fuck me this is shit. Even Lambert sat down when second went in.

The whole ground could see we needed to play 4-4-2.

When 3-5-2 the full back should move forward and his sided centre back comes out to join him when defending. That's how that formation works. It's not always the centre midfielders role to get out wide.

Fuck me.

I honestly think we will lose every match left to play.

Dear Simon Bates

This is a story about a lost love.  It starts back in 2006, when I met a new man, a lovely American called Randy.  After the previous bloke he seemed perfect, much younger, charming and with lots of money.  He even got a tattoo with my name on.  At first everything was perfect, he promised me the world, and whatever I wanted, he bought me, and made sure I was well looked after.  But then as the years passed, things began to turn sour.  He stopped coming to see me, and I suspect he was still seeing his American love back in the states.  He stopped spending money, slowly at first but then altogether, claiming he couldn't afford it.  Pretty soon he stopped taking an interest in me altogether.  Could you play me the following tune, which for some reason reminds me of our last year together:

Lambert has had my support but with his formation tonight and picking Bannon in midfield yet again i am starting to waver. Bannon versus Sissoko i ask you. If ever there was a time when we needed a hard tackler in midfield it was tonight, watching Bannon trying to lay a tackle is like watching an ant try to rape an elephant. Even the commentators can see the obvious, and what good is Bent playing on a wing, i really think he has been picked to shore up the defence at corners.

Interesting substitutions. When I say interesting, I really mean 'what?'.

In a sense though, could we be going 442 and look to put pressure on a team without an away win and who could be low on confidence too. After all , even 3 new players in the team doesn't turn hem into Barcelona overnight.

Penalty, come on Villa. Light shines.

It'd nice for us to score a late goal for a change instead of conceding. Would give us a bit of a lift to come back from 2-0 down.
