Available Sunday evening.
-
Blimey, didn't see this happening. Need one of those MIB neuralizers to make me forget this game quickly.
-
Off the pace and came up against a very good team eager to make a point and restart their season.
Pick yourselves up after Christmas and try to be better, but no need for crisis stations yet.
-
Let's not go into melt down we got hammered but generally barring today we improved loads.
Their team costs 100 of millions our cost 10p , bring on spurs
-
Anyone still fancy us then in a one off cup final against them?
No? Thought not....
-
Awful, shocking and completely shite.
-
I thought we went to pieces against Man City but this was another level!!
-
I was thinking that this Villa side could go into the history books. I wasn't expecting it to be like this.
-
Merry Christmas everyone. Like finding a bag of shit under the tree when you expected a new football.
-
Completely unacceptable as Aston Villa Football Club
Completely and utterly unacceptable
-
Ouch
-
It says something about the sheer ineptitude of the squad when we conceded 8 goals, and our keeper was the best player.
Every single outfield player should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves, and a few should think about a career change.
Merry fucking Christmas you bunch of wasters. Hopefully we have to sign a new squad when the current lot choke on their turkey.
-
Isn't this the biggest defeat in our history?
-
Utterly embarrassing. Why did we just decide to stop defending ?
-
Ouch... ups and downs... we'll probably win the League Cup now.
-
Isn't this the biggest defeat in our history?
Yep.
-
Next 2 games are massive now. Spurs and Wigan at home. Take 4 points and we're fine.
-
I give up. 8-0 what a load of shit.
-
Worst goal difference in the league Merry fucking Christmas . An absolute disgrace
-
Unacceptable. I think we have had it this season we're such a poor side. Cheers Lerner you useless twat.
-
Isn't this the biggest defeat in our history?
Yes, we've lost by 7 a few times, but never 8.
-
Lost for words. Time to forget about football for a few days. Have a good christmas all.
-
Right well every outfield player gets 0 out of 10 that goes without saying. Young or not they were all an utter embarrassment today.
Lessons learned - Herd and Lichaj should never be starters for Aston Villa, ever.
We need 3 or 4 quality additions in January, centre half, left back, centre mid and a creative player. They need to be experienced.
I'm not giving up on the side at all and there are a lot promising players, but that performance was disgusting.
-
Worst goal difference in the league now
-
Opps!
-
Embarrassing.
-
Bollocks. Move on, nothing to see here. To be fair, they were probably worth that score.
I don't think the players will be overly bothered by it in terms of moving on.
We knew there'd be ups and downs, this is just a big fuck off down.
I'm looking forward to Wednesday & Saturday, and I reckon the players are too.
-
That lot in Mexico were right it is the end of the world.
-
unlucky,
thought we deserved at least a point from that game
-
Too much nonsense this past week over the youngsters.
We need experience in in January.
-
Worried the effect this result could have on our young team if we have to face Chelsea in the final- dreadful performance today but lets put it behind us and give it a real crack against spurs and Wigan.
Merry Christmas to you all and your families and see you again on Boxing Day !
-
Lessons learned - Herd and Lichaj should never be starters for Aston Villa, ever.
I'd add Bannan on to that,
-
Hmm. Best to move on from this one! I thought we might get a bit of a tonking here but i disnt quite expect that! Merry Christmas all!
Definitely a few things to think about:
- is 352 viable long term / in games like this?
- can we go on with so little experience in the side for the rest of the season?
- will we see much of lichaj and herd after this season?
-
Ouch... ups and downs... we'll probably win the League Cup now.
No good if we get relegated. We are deep in shit. Eighteenth is there for four or five clubs to fall into and just look at our goal difference.
-
We have to take it on the chin, put it behind us and most importantly leanr from it.
-
Just as Citeh in the league showed, we are bad against very good midfielders. Liverpool could easily have been the same if they had scored first and had Silva or Mata instead of Shelvey and Henderson.. But upto the 3rd goal when turned it off as I knew we were going to get mullered, we just did not seem to have anyone to put the foot on the ball and calm everyone down.
January can't come soon enough.
-
These fluke results come along every now and then. Usually to a team who end up getting relegated.
Over reaction or not, that is an absolute fucking disgrace. Yes we expect ups and downs, yes we are a team in transition(again) and yes we are a young team. But, fuck me, a premier league team should not be so far ahead of another to be able to inflict that sort of damage.
Utterly, utterly unacceptable.
Big, big money needing to be spent in January, but sadly it won't happen, and who'd come anyway?
-
Unacceptable. I think we have had it this season we're such a poor side. Cheers Lerner you useless twat.
Sorry, I've had a few beers, but shut the fuck up. Grow up. One fucking game and its the end if the world.
-
Expected us to lose but not like that ..very poor to give up out GD advantage over the rest of the teams down there like losing another point in honesty
-
Like going down the long snake in snakes and ladders right back to the start
I'm afraid the thought of shelling out for the League Cup final to see them in all likelihood take us apart is a far from appetising prospect
I'd make them train on Christmas Day after that
-
Lessons learned - Herd and Lichaj should never be starters for Aston Villa, ever.
I'd add Bannan on to that,
They looked perfectly fine last week. Nobody was saying that then. They just got whipped against one of the very best midfields in Europe and a top class striker that has suddenly remembered he's a top class striker.
-
Might do us a favour. Last year we won at Chelsea and papered over the cracks. Result = zero spend in January. This time we've been hammered and it should be obvious to anyone that we need to strengthen.
-
Three words adequately describe that. Horseshit, horseshit and horseshit.
Or is that six words?
-
Unacceptable. I think we have had it this season we're such a poor side. Cheers Lerner you useless twat.
Sorry, I've had a few beers, but shut the fuck up. Grow up. One fucking game and its the end if the world.
Oh yeah one tiny little defeat, hardly worth mentioning
-
Had tears in my eyes last week when we scored that second goal ., got tears in my eyes tonight for different reasons.
what happened ? 3 points on Wednesday please , you , the players owe us
and can the players give the fans who went today their money back.
-
turned off at four.
never expecting that.
oh well merry Christmas
-
They should all hang there heads in shame, including Lambert and Lerner
Not fit to where the shirts
-
Alrady a couple of comments about a defeat in the 18th match of a 38 game season being the end of it for us... really.
Yes it hurts to take a battering like that but it doesn't suddenly make us favourites for relegation. Moan about the performance today by all means but lets not over react and start calling for all the team to be replaced or any other similar nonsense.
-
Ouch... ups and downs... we'll probably win the League Cup now.
No good if we get relegated. We are deep in shit. Eighteenth is there for four or five clubs to fall into and just look at our goal difference.
Fuck me. One minute we're winning the cup and staying up, then after one loss we're going down. If you went to the games you'd know we are not going down.
-
If ever there was a time to get completely and utterly battered I suppose it was now - with the transfer window looming - hopefully this will make Lerner & Co sit up and realize investment in the team is a necessity.
-
I'm glad I dont have to go back to work until January. FML
-
Fucking gutless wankers. We are Aston villa fucking football club, u have disgraced this once great club and are now etched in the record books. Hang your heads, u should be ashamed
-
Murdered by a strong, quality and experienced midfield. I wish Lambert had changed it at 3 or 4 to four at the back.
-
Expected us to lose but not like that ..very poor to give up out GD advantage over the rest of the teams down there like losing another point in honesty
I agree, perhaps the last two games were a false dawn, because today was more than a wake up call.
-
Ouch.
-
Look, we're all really disappointed. But people saying 'bannan should never play for the club again' or similar comments. Come the fuck on!
-
The thing is it could easily have been double that score and you couldn't have argued. We are in deep deep trouble.
-
If anybody over Christmas offers me an After Eight they can expect to have the box rammed down their throat.
Well played, Brad. The rest of you have a lot to learn.
Chelsea showed what happens when you spend a fortune on world class players and they click during a game. They were unplayable for most of the game. Fortunately we won't have to play them every week.
-
Chelsea were well and truly up for it today, although that doesn't excuse the scoreline. Still, there's no need to panic. We won at Anfield last time out, and won at Carrow Rd just before that. We're capable of good performances, but away from home against the big teams our inexperience really shows. Our youngsters are good, but when you're playing the best in the country you need some experience and nous, and we need to strengthen a few positions yet.
When people say this will be a season of ups and downs, this is presumably what they meant. Bit of a big fucking down today, though.
-
Expected us to lose but not like that ..very poor to give up out GD advantage over the rest of the teams down there like losing another point in honesty
I agree, perhaps the last two games were a false dawn, because today was more than a wake up call.
Had Liverpool scored first last week the result would have been very different
-

Sorry, I've had a few beers, but shut the fuck up. Grow up. One fucking game and its the end if the world.
Oh yeah one tiny little defeat, hardly worth mentioning
One defeat in how many? Yes, one little defeat.
-
i've watched aston villa for well over 30 years, i've never seen us lose 8. fucking 8. I hope your turkey tastes like shit you useless c...s
-
Lessons learned - Herd and Lichaj should never be starters for Aston Villa, ever.
I'd add Bannan on to that,
They looked perfectly fine last week. Nobody was saying that then. They just got whipped against one of the very best midfields in Europe and a top class striker that has suddenly remembered he's a top class striker.
Bannan is decent enough, but I'm sorry Herd just isn't.
-
one of the most naive and limp performances i've ever seen from a top-flight team.
embarrassing.
-
Fucking gutless wankers. We are Aston villa fucking football club, u have disgraced this once great club and are now etched in the record books. Hang your heads, u should be ashamed
Sorry I disagree. A young team playing against the champions of Europe just got completely hammered. You statement suggests our players meant to do that which is wrong on every level.
-
Ouch... ups and downs... we'll probably win the League Cup now.
No good if we get relegated. We are deep in shit. Eighteenth is there for four or five clubs to fall into and just look at our goal difference.
Fuck me. One minute we're winning the cup and staying up, then after one loss we're going down. If you went to the games you'd know we are not going down.
Ah that old chestnut. I am going over on 9 February for Villa v West ham. flights paid for, hotel booked. oh but wait, I am a shit fan.
-
A defeat was as likely as ever today, despite our excellent recent form. That is fucking tough to take though. Thought we could really win the League Cup. A better side than this conceded seven and predictably rolled over to them at Wembley. Need the manager to make sure this doesn't have serious repercussions. Big test.
-
So glad I stayed in utterly embarrassing
-
Unacceptable. I think we have had it this season we're such a poor side. Cheers Lerner you useless twat.
Sorry, I've had a few beers, but shut the fuck up. Grow up. One fucking game and its the end if the world.
Hold on. We have jus suffered the heaviest defeat in our long, proud, illustrious history. Fuck, it should hurt, we should be fucking angry and humiliated. You can't just brush it aside as another game.
Show some fucking pride man.
-
i've watched aston villa for well over 30 years, i've never seen us lose 8. fucking 8. I hope your turkey tastes like shit you useless c...s
No Villa fan has ever seen them lose by that margin. We've seen history today! ;-)
-
Ouch... ups and downs... we'll probably win the League Cup now.

Fuck me. One minute we're winning the cup and staying up, then after one loss we're going down. If you went to the games you'd know we are not going down.
Whatever we do guys, let's not have a massive argument on here, it's bad enough at it is! We need to stick together and sleep on it. Win against Spurs and things will seem ok again. Today was completely unacceptable I think we all agree on that
-
If you had offered me 3 points from Liverpool and Chelsea away before the 2 games I would have taken it so fuck it ..lSpurs next lets see a response from the boys
-
Look, we're all really disappointed. But people saying 'bannan should never play for the club again' or similar comments. Come the fuck on!
I agree with that. However Herd and Lichaj will never be good enough.
-
Bizarrely I was more humiliated by the 7-1 there under MON.
-
Nothing really to add to it, have our moan now then tomorrow, we pick ourselves up, dust ourselves up and we go again
Villa til I die
-
Currently I'm taking the highs along with the lows which will always happens with kids. Its only 3 points is how I see it against a multi-million pound squad.
lets hope we react similar to how we did after getting beat by Man city
-
I know hindsight is 20/20 vision but think Lambert should have gone 4-5-1 against these. May well still have lost but may have stifled their midfield more. This result won't define our season unless it destroys the young players' self belief. Need to really get behind them on Wednesday
-
still think we could beat chelski in a cup final , even after getting beat 8-0.
Football is a funny old game.
-
Well if we can only lose 1 every 6 games we'll be fine. Trying to be positive here.
-
I just couldn't understand the last substitution. 5-0 down and he takes off a hard working midfielder and brings on a debutant forward when we're already being overrun??????
A major problem was Baker being left to do too much on the left of the 3 centre backs; a decent centre back but noway good enough as a full back. We should have gone to a flat back four as soon as we were exposed again down that flank in the 2nd half.
that minus 8 on the goal difference could yet come back to haunt us.
-
I'm not making any judgement on relegation or anything like that. However the level of performance and result in that one game was utterly embarrassing and a disgrace.
-
Utter garbage from the 1st minute to the last.
-
It's nearly time to spend,spend,spend.
-
its January a week on Tuesday , thank f**k
-
lambo really shown up tactically today. lots of changes needed for Wednesday to tighten it up and get a point. then a vital win against wigan.
experienced midfielders needed urgently next week
-
Look, we're all really disappointed. But people saying 'bannan should never play for the club again' or similar comments. Come the fuck on!
I agree with that. However Herd and Lichaj will never be good enough.
They might be if we played them in their proper positions. We should've shifted Herd to midfield today, Chelsea were playing with one forward. It should've been obvious their midfield was the main threat.
Ah well, we got hammered at Man City and went on a good run afterwards. Need to do likewise now.
-
Oh I feel sorry for Bowery as well, he only gets sent on when we're getting absolutely smashed.
-
i've watched aston villa for well over 30 years, i've never seen us lose 8. fucking 8. I hope your turkey tastes like shit you useless c...s
No Villa fan has ever seen them lose by that margin. We've seen history today! ;-)
In that case I hope the turkey tastes like shit and the christmas pudding burns on the way down their gullets and if somebody could serve it up with some pull your bastard finger out and earn your over inflated wage custard that would be ace!
-
Bizarrely I was more humiliated by the 7-1 there under MON.
Agreed then we were supposed to be a team competeting with the likes of Chelsea that match proved we were still miles away and perhaps showed under MON that we were never gona get there.
Today it was men vs boys £15mil team vs £200mil they clicked we lost shape early and the rest is history
-
It was also very naive to continue attacking at 4-0.
-
One of, if not the, most humiliating day in our entire history. It just isn't acceptable. Lerner, get your fuckin wallet out in January and buy us a defence worthy of the Premier League.
NO MORE KIDS!
-
I think it was the 352 and the desire to go chasing the game that hurt us as much as any individual performances. I don't actually think any of our players stopped trying or were abysmal. Though there were clearly a lot of poor performances.
But if I were Spurs I'd be licking my lips at the thought of playing 433 against us on weds, and just leaving it 3 v 3 up top. I think we might need to change back to 4231, at least as soon as Vlaar is back.
I'm off to see the hobbit. Merry Christmas all!
-
Imagine being there and having to get on the tube back with those tossers - I think I might honestly lose it such is my hatred for them. One of the reasons I can never go to this game, they make me see red. That and the expense. Hats off to those wearing the colours and coming away from there, it really is 'hold your head up with dignity' time. More than I could manage
-
Unacceptable. I think we have had it this season we're such a poor side. Cheers Lerner you useless twat.
Sorry, I've had a few beers, but shut the fuck up. Grow up. One fucking game and its the end if the world.

Show some fucking pride man.
Perhaps I shouldn't have posted on here so soon but you're right it does hurt I hate seeing my team like this so sorry if I overreacted. I do think we have looked poor all season apart from the odd game and I do think Lerner has a lot to answer for.
-
How fickle fans can be. The players are young and they will learn a lot from that, we also got beat by Chelsea by a big score a couple of years ago with a lot older and better squad.
Take it and just try and put it right in the next game.
-
Look, we're all really disappointed.
Spot on. We didn't have a midfield today. Chelsea owned us there all game.
-
Fucking gutless wankers.
The players don't deserve their wages i turned that bollocks off at 4-0.
8-0 fook me their shit.
-
Come on - group hug - we can get through this brothers and sisters
-
Very poor. Chelsea were just winning the ball and immediately they'd be 4/5 vs our three centre backs. No discipline in midfield and the wing backs were really exposed as either being not good enough of just totally unable to adjust and drop deeper to reduce the gaps in the channels. We'll hammer Spurs 3-0.
-
If anyonewants to know where to go for turkeys this xmas I know where to find 10 of them.
-
How fickle fans can be. The players are young and they will learn a lot from that, we also got beat by Chelsea by a big score a couple of years ago with a lot older and better squad.
Take it and just try and put it right in the next game.
I don't think people are being fickle. I don't think anyone is saying give up on all the team or anything like that. However that level of performance and result and surrender is not acceptable no matter how young the side is.
-
Unacceptable. I think we have had it this season we're such a poor side. Cheers Lerner you useless twat.
Sorry, I've had a few beers, but shut the fuck up. Grow up. One fucking game and its the end if the world.

I was referring to the post in reply to yours Karlos. I'm with you mate, I'm bloody livid with that. I just can't put that down to 'just another game'.
-
The kids need help as does the manager. The scoreline isn't acceptable, but it's happened, the response on and off the pitch is what we need to judge.
Keep the faith. UTV.
Merry Christmas all.
-
We lost 7-1 there with a midfield that was one of the best in the league, and some of the most experienced players in the league. Chelsea, as we know are formidable when in form. They have appointed a manager for all the piss taking is very, very good, and by coincidence knows how to switch on one of the best forwards in world football. Add in the best creative midfield in Europe in my opinion behind Barca, and pretty quickly you can see how a day like today can happen. Truth is we were not good enough and they were brilliant. Unfortunately they punished us again and again. At the same time we have been 2 up against United and beat Liverpool who hammered fulham yesterday.
As some of those with a bit more perspective have said there will be ups and downs. We have been battered, really battered twice. Away at Chelsea and Man City. Hardly a level playing field. Spurs will be hard, but 3 from our next 2 games and points wise we are still ok. Give Lambert some bloody time. 3 players in January would be nice. Vlaar back in for Herd and Bennett in for Lichaz will help us a lot. A real enforcer in the centre of the park for games like today would be nice.
-
Might be wrong but in 50 years can't remember an 8. How many other prem sides this season will concede 8 down there. Utter,Utter fucking shambles. Lambert and all the players should give this weeks wages to a deserving charity. I won't be able to pick up a newspaper tomorrow !!
-
I don't feel gutted...just numb
-
Look, we're all really disappointed.
Spot on. We didn't have a midfield today. Chelsea owned us there all game.
I don't think Herd is good enough in midfield either to be honest. He's a useful squad player but that's about it.
-
A nose txt me during the game:
'Ho ho ho Xmas has come early. Oops it's 8'.
I replied: 'League Cup Finals? Nine soon'.
-
Fucking hell. One step forward, fucking eight steps back. I expected us to lose but didn't expect to play as badly as that. If we play them in the final I hope they don't embarrass us like that again.
-
To be honest I'm more pissed off that we got beat by Southampton. Unfortunately games against Chelsea, Man City etc. are not going to define our season. We need time before we can start properly competing higher up the table again.
-
Can't criticize the young players too much - they never stopped working; but you have to question the tactics and the failure to adjust the team to address the shortcomings that everyone could see
-
Expected us to lose but not like that ..very poor to give up out GD advantage over the rest of the teams down there like losing another point in honesty
I agree, perhaps the last two games were a false dawn, because today was more than a wake up call.
Had Liverpool scored first last week the result would have been very different
Stupid comment makes no sense because the same could be said if we had scored first today, but they didn't and we didn't. Enjoy smelling your own shit whilst cowering under your dining table convinced we will be playing championship football next season!!
-
"Work in progress", my arse. This isn't acceptable for Aston Villa.
-
:) It's all brilliant mind games from PL - Randy with see this and have to get his cheque book out now won't he!....er....won't he?....book...cheque.....surely... :o
-

A few are Paul. They need help (the kids) and unfortunately we are missing our biggest leader in Vlaar at the back who may have helped us out a bit. Maybe Lambert got it wrong completely today, he is still a novice too in many ways. We certainly need another experienced, quick centre half and an enforcing midfield player and a tricky forward for me. I also think that after last week they may have just believed their own publicity a bit too much??
-
Utter, utter shite performance. I left at 7 after spending what seemed like the whole match arguing with the awful stewards.
-
Look, we're all really disappointed. But people saying 'bannan should never play for the club again' or similar comments. Come the fuck on!
I agree with that. However Herd and Lichaj will never be good enough.

I don't think Herd is good enough in midfield either to be honest. He's a useful squad player but that's about it.
You might be right, and I would look to get someone in to play there in January. We should've played him in the holding midfielder role today though, or maybe Fabulous Fabian.
-
Please keep it civil folks. It's a fucking shit day but no need to turn on each other.
-
Well that performance was totally unacceptable. We capitulated once the 2nd goal went it. Whilst today's performance / result won't define our season, we need some quality / experience. You cannot do things on the cheap as we have been doing for 2 seasons. There are too many players who are either not good enough or do not have the experience to deal with the premiership. The revolution needs to be gradual.
-
Recently been linked with CB's and Big CM's can see why today.Westwood is a good player but not at same level as Mata etc and today was outplayed by them.Needed some physical presence in their to counter act Luiz who was awesome for them in all fairness
-

Well said I agree with this. Yes I'm disappointed and feel really sorry for the traveling fans and I remember being taunted by the Chelsea fans when we lost 7-1, it's hard to take but we get back on the bike and start again.
-
Can't criticize the young players too much - they never stopped working; but you have to question the tactics and the failure to adjust the team to address the shortcomings that everyone could see
I cant criticize the young players and some of them are not prem quality , its not really their fault . I do blame Lambert for not buying enough experience but he obviously thought mixed with Bent , Nzogbia, Ireland and Gabby we would be ok to Jan. I cant believe Nzogbia is injured again.
-
I'm trying to avoid the old cliche about men against boys, because this Villa side is capable of holding their own in the league. It was a freak result in as much as this side is better than a spanking like that, but it's also indicative that they do punch above their weight generally.
I'm not happy with the scoreline, expected the loss and am more interested in what comes afterward. Maybe I'd feel worse if I had to go into work tomorrow!
-
I know we want to look on the bright side but I can't see these boys bouncing back from this. Talk of a 'backlash' against Spurs just don't hold water for me. More likely their morale is crushed for some time. This could be a pivotal game.
-
I don't wish to single any player out, as collectively we were utter gash!
The decision for Chelsea to press our centre halves and central two, preventing us from getting any comfortable time on the ball, was highly effective.
They are indeed Champions of Europe, and demonstrated such class today.
We have no option but to regroup and to stick together. A nice early goal for us v Spurs would get us on the track to put this out of our memory.
After working all night, I wish I'd have stayed in bed.
Will be interesting to see the type of player PL goes after in Jan.

Shit performance. Shit result. Shit match.
But it was Chelsea away and most of us knew that we wouldn't be getting anything from there anyway. The work-rate which crushed Liverpool wasn't there today and Chelsea were very fired up in midfield. They chased down everything and with their oligarch money and quality we were always going to get trounced.
Get the work-rate back up and I can see us beating Spurs on Wednesday. Just forget about this rather irrelevant match.
-
Anyone still fancy us then in a one off cup final against them?
No? Thought not....
Not sure about it this year, we have to get there yet, as is the case with Chelsea. But we have a manager who will go away and learn.
-
Look on the bright side how shit must liverpool have to be for a team like us to do them at Anfield
-
Unacceptable. I think we have had it this season we're such a poor side. Cheers Lerner you useless twat.
Yes, apart from that game, it's been brilliant so far this season. Unacceptable. I think we have had it this season we're such a poor side. Cheers Lerner you useless twat.
Sorry, I've had a few beers, but shut the fuck up. Grow up. One fucking game and its the end if the world.
Sorry, I've had a few beers, but shut the fuck up. Grow up. One fucking game and its the end if the world.
Yes because apart from this game we've done really well. It's not like we're only three points above the relegation places.
-
Shocking we need to pick ourselves up and be ready for Spurs.
-
Expected us to lose but not like that ..very poor to give up out GD advantage over the rest of the teams down there like losing another point in honesty
I'm really trying hard not to give you some abuse for your reply

Well that's an original response and no mistake.

I don't think there will be a backlash against Spurs but we can't be that crap again. What's handy is that the game is in three days time. There's no time to stew about it - got to pick ourselves up and go at it.
-
Anyone still fancy us then in a one off cup final against them?
No? Thought not....
Why not? I remember Palace losing 9-0 at Klanfield in the league and then beating them in an FA Cup semi-final.
-
at least we are respecting the uefa financial fair play rules.
-
I know we want to look on the bright side but I can't see these boys bouncing back from this. Talk of a 'backlash' against Spurs just don't hold water for me. More likely their morale is crushed for some time. This could be a pivotal game.
No we probably wont have a backlash against Spurs. We didn't really have a backlash against Arsenal after loosing against City but we did gradually improve and expect to see the same against Spurs, Wigan, Swansea and Ipswich.
-
I'm not making any judgement on relegation or anything like that. However the level of performance and result in that one game was utterly embarrassing and a disgrace.
I agree totally on that, today was a perfect storm effect. World class side full of experienced internationals scores early against the youngest side in the league.
They then decide to leave their wide attacking players up front, regardless of what our full backs do, leaving us effectively 3 on 3 at the back as soon as we tried to press them, or leaving their midfield and fullbacks with loads of space if we didn't press them.
We then had a really poor game with the ball, lots of static players, lots of underhit passes, Benteke showed inexperience running the line.
At the same time they played superbly, everything went well for them other than a couple of snatched chances and a very good performance from Guzan.
Finally Dowd, as usual, favoured a top 4 side, 2 penalties given that he'd never have given for us, and then a few free kicks (1 of which that they scored from) that were 50-50, yet we never got a single free kick in the same circumstances.
Today is shit, but other than ruining our goal difference, it's not hugely important so long as Lambert gets them in the right frame of mind from wednesday. I think the squad have shown the ability to not dwell on these things so far so hopefully we can get back on track with a decent performance agianst spurs before we take 3 points off Wigan.
-
Look on the bright side how shit must liverpool have to be for a team like us to do them at Anfield
I just had a text off a Liverpool supporting friend saying 'Oops'. I replied by saying 'Don't fancy your chances at Stamford Bridge after the same Villa side spanked your asses on your home ground'.
Haven't heard back yet.
-
at least we are respecting the uefa financial fair play rules.
You're not allowed to buy players in December. Why not wait till next month and see who we sign?
-
Not even a wibble could have saved the day. Still it's a one off, we will get better and better if Randy spends a few quid....
-
We desperately need to get in some proven players with experience.
The flip side of playing a side this young is that they get a spanking like this and you wonder who they'll look to for leadership in the dressing room.
I am not going to get suicidal over this, we will take some more beatings this season but we have to be realistic, a team of 23 year olds is not going to see out a season unless they get a bit of support, and that is what we need in January.
I think this thrashing is a timely reminder of how much work we still have to do.
-
It's the goal difference that worries me. That's why I raised the r word again earlier.
I agree we should be looking up, and can still creep into the top ten. It's just that tenth to eighteenth is so damn tight this year. Wigan have a knack of coming good, while both Southampton and Sunderland can nab important wins. That's why I mentioned the dreaded 'r' word. A goal difference like ours is a real concern and it is important we bounce back quickly and put it behind us.
Sadly, 7 or 8 goal defeats are more of a problem to us now than they were in March 2010 when at least we knew we were definitely safe and chasing Europe.
-
We lost 8-0 and not a single Villa player booked, where was the fight?
-
Do your "Work in progress" somewhere else other than at Aston Villa F.C
Has any other team got completely smashed this season like us, those players are a disgrace.
-
Most of us knew it was going to be like this. Wait and see how they play next before judging this one. As long as it is something that we can recover from then it won't make much difference in the longer term.
-
Please get Robbie Keane back to pull them together..be the best Christmas present we could give ourselves!!

Nobody can ever say again that our televised live games on Sky are dull.

I know we want to look on the bright side but I can't see these boys bouncing back from this. Talk of a 'backlash' against Spurs just don't hold water for me. More likely their morale is crushed for some time. This could be a pivotal game.
Which is why we, as fans, need to stick together and lift the team up. We need to keep our heads and keep backing the manager and team. The morale will be fine if we keep the support and belief going.
Arsenal shipped in eight last season and it did not do them too much harm. It's horrible for us as a club to go through it but we can come out stronger with the right attitude.
-
Not going to join in the arguments on here.Today showed to me that we need a bit of a destroyer in midfield, who can just sit in front of the back 4 and protect them with a more physical presence.Westwood and Bannan try to play the ball out, and at times play it out nicely, but they are too weak.
Too many were poor today, but i did'nt get over excited last week, and i'm not going to get too despondent this week.We are going to get poor results, but i have to say it should make the Jan transfer window a bit more interesting.
Personally i wouldn't sign any more youngsters yet.
-

What's the point in picking up stupid bookings when you're 4/5/6/7/8-0 down?

I think we will finish comfortably clear of the bottom 3 and don't think goal difference will send us down- today is a day to put behind us and a wake up call , we have 2 home games coming up - lets win them!
Lambert honest - " they know my feelings and they know they've let everyone down".

We have never, ever, ever lost 8-0 before.
As shit as we have been been many times is the past, no one has ever beaten us like that before.
I know we are in the throw away era where nothing matters for very long, and everyone just moves on, but fuck, this matters to me. I feel absolutely sick with this result.
That is a big thing. You can't just sweep it under the carpet as another game, it could have a massive impact on the season.
I just hope that management team have the balls to learn from this.

Embarrassing
-
Most disappointing was the workrate today, we are a young side playing a team of internationals worth millions the last thing you need is the workrate to drop off. Chelsea targetted our left side from the off, not the first side to do that, they all see the weakness.
Lambert tried to keep the momentum up from last week when probably a more defensive team was needed,we all know that we need
experienced players in, lets see what happens next month.

I'm not talking about getting booked for the sake of it, but the team today showed hardly any fight

Problem was, we couldn't get near them, they were that good today.

I hope you are right eastie, and think you probably are.
There's something very naked about losing like that though. It just stunned me.

today is a day to put behind us and a wake up call , we have 2 home games coming up - lets win them!
With the notable exception of 3 or 4 games, the whole season has been a wake up call. And the players keep hitting the snooze button and going back to sleep.

The only way to look at this without it driving you crazy is that before last saturday we had 2 away games we expected to get nothing from . so we are 3points better than i expected. i know people are talking about the goal difference but if we had lost both games 2-1 we would be saying it was not to bad but we would be 3 points worst of but better goal difference. we just need to get a good result quickly to get confidence back
-
It does not take a great tactician like Benitez to work it out . He can easily watch us on MOTD a couple of times and work out Lichaj is a very average player at LB and just hammer us down that side .
-
Isn't this the biggest defeat in our history?
Norwich seem to be doing much better since he left.

I will settle for pointing out that Liverpool had a great first 25 minutes against us last week and had they scored in that 25 mins they were likely to have got another. As per today's game

About sums up my thoughts. We aren't that bad and aren't as good as a 3-1 win away at Anfield suggests. We will have a better second half to the season than the first.
-
Fuck it...would have taken 3 points from Liverpool and Chelsea away so bollocks to it.
Simply awful display, but surely we know it's gonna be all up's and downs this season....
-
Stuck in traffic in wanky London.
I left after 6. Truly awful. Pitiful. I fucking hate cliches too, but men against boys was apt. Yes they moved the ball with a sublime aplomb, but our midfield was so fucking weal and powder puff, it defied belief. Too let that mincing ponce strut around like he is a real midfielder boils my piss.
Then we collapsed.
We have to move on. You cannot dwell on something like this, even though it feels apocalyptic. You have to react and lay a fucking glove or two on Spurs.
We need some older heads and we need to invest in quality. There is nothing novel there.
0 out of ten for everybody, including you Lambert. You got the selection and the system as wrong as wrong can be.
You better put six points on the board now in the next two games.
Fuck off 2012, you have been a ****** of a year.
-

Yes think this was record defeat ever. Plenty of talk about a roller coaster season and it sure is! Loads of encouraging signs recently but the confidence of young players can soon ebb away with heavy defeats. A while back I was hoping we could get to 20 points by end of December then get one or two good experienced players in, think we will still need them
-
Fucking gutless wankers.
My statement says nothing of the sort. If we're going to take the credit when our young team wins we can't hide behind age. 8-0 is unacceptable hence why it is a record. There are 22 men on that pitch, showing a complete lack of guts has nothing to do with their age. I don't give a flying toss about age. Losing 8-0 is impossible if you give a toss
-
Stuck in traffic in wanky London.
Fuck off 2012, you have been a c*** of a year.
As I said before, it must have been one of our worst calendar years?
-
The site I write for gets me to rate the players, the manager and the ref after every game. I had no idea what to put for Holman and Bowery because I don't recall them touching the ball!
I rated Dowd though. Give it a go, it'll make you feel better: http://pickourteam.com/premierleague/aston-villa/rating/referee/23-12-2012/chelsea-vs-aston-villa
-
OK we have only lost 3 points today. Yes the goal difference is worrying but that is not going to matter in the big scheme of things. Lambert and players need t learn from this and get something out of our next two games and we will be alright.
-

Enjoy you Christmas mate hope you feel a bit better after embellishing your pointless comment a second time. Oh and by the way we had an even better 65 minutes in that game at Anfield and as far as I am concerned as a Villa fan those are the minutes that mattered. I thought we defended heroically in that first 25 mins to earn the right to destroy then in the following 65, you of course are free to think what you like and express those thoughts freely on here just like I have done. Once again have a great Christmas day, maybe we can get together at the game on Boxing day and discuss this further, are you going?
-
I recall an arsenal side full of kids getting absolutely spanked by man utd, twice in recent seasons.they went on to finish top four. We clearly won't do that, but neither does today's game mean we're definitely going down. I was pretty convinced we'd be bottom three for Xmas a few weeks back. We just need to get through the spurs game - adrae would be a really good result - and then put some wins together in January. Could definitely do with 2-3 signings though!
-

Pleat was saying something similar. He mentioned in midweek our reserves got a to king from Spurs however Lambert asked Sid to set up the team exactly like first team at Liverpool and not change the shape despite being trounced. Today he did the same at Chelsea and better players found Villa wanting again. He finished off with saying that Lambert is brave and will carry on with his belief.
-
OK we have only lost 3 points today. Yes the goal difference is worrying but that is not going to matter in the big scheme of things. Lambert and players need t learn from this and get something out of our next two games and we will be alright.
My feeling about the goal difference is that if we score to get it in the right direction, we'll be earning the points that go with it. If it deteriorates further, we'll be losing. Ultimately, it's irrelevant.
-
As the old adage goes, don't get too carried away when you win and don't get too down when you lose. Have to admit that was pretty horrendous though and the fact it was broadcast live on TV made it even worse. I hope PL has made it clear that that was unacceptable and is considering some changes for Boxing Day.
-
The first time in 3936 top flight games that we have conceded 8 goals so every Villa fan has to be hurting after that result
We were truly fucking awful and barely mustered a shot worth mentioning in 90 minutes (Weimann's one that hit the bar possibly the exception) and we looked liked conceding every time they came forward; it could have been 13-0 and we couldn't have complained
Nice to hear Lambert come out and openly admit he was not happy with the performance/result/everything today but he has got a real battle to pick the players up for the Spurs game
-

Is that soe kind of a troll to see if I attend Villa games?
Well to put you mind at rest, yes I will be there on Boxing Day, yes I have a season ticket, yes I have been going to VP for the last 30 years, yes I have followed villa home and away during the last three decades! (Although not away for the past few due to family etc...)

At 6.0 my wife asked me, "why I did not join the rest of the family outside at the Braii" my response was, what about the poor bastards at Stamford Bridge, we need to have some empathy with them.
I do not know what to say I am 56 and saw my first Villa game at the age of 8.
We have never conceeded 8 on my watch.
Have I been more upset in my Villa life ? Yes, many times.
Today was not pleasant but it will not stick in my memory like some results played out by some other Villa teams.
It must be clear to Lambert that we need some experience in the team.
Do not take it away from Chelsea, I saw Utd, City, and Arse play this weekend Chelsea and their midfield would have creamed all of them.If we do nothing in the transfer window, then lets get cross , until then chin up and lets beat those other Cockney pretenders on Boxing day.
-
Don't you just love a good mental melt down
-
Calm down chaps, tis the season of goodwill and all that. It was a crap result but no need to turn on each other.
-
I'd rather 8-0 with hope than 1-0 with nothing.
I feel ok.
-
Happy Christmas Chelsea, love AVFC. You can give us our present at Wembley in February. UTV!
-
Watching that game today only cemented my belief that top flight English football began its descent into meaninglessness the moment some overseas oligarch with billions of ill-gotten gains decided to take up a new hobby and took over a serially failing football team in the heart of fashionable London. Follow this with the Abu Dhabi crowd and the Glazers and now most recently Dubai with Leeds (it was Ken Bates who cashed in on Chelsea and he's just done it again with Leeds, so expect the resurgence of another great traditional club next year) and you realise that, no matter how well a club is run, as I think Villa is, if you throw enough money at a problem it will eventually be resolved. This is why you get the occasional results like today, with a club trying to do things the right way, and this is why it plays into the hands of the despicable Sky who, if they can't have a plucky upset, just love an eight-goal hammering by one of their faves which makes this the league loved all over the world. I would say the same to a Chelsea fan, a Man City or Utd fan or anyone - I am happier still to be a Villa fan now, as I have been throughout many years, than I could ever be if someone came along and bought our success.
-
The criticism of Lichaj is rather harsh as after he and Westwood were substituted we let in 5 in 35 minutes. On that display he provides, despite his problems against Moses, more defensive qualities than Bennett.
Same with Herd, today he was rash but his battling qualities ensured a clean sheet against Stoke. When it's a gritty battle against lesser opposition,Herd and Lichaj don't go missing.
The whole midfield went AWOL after Westwood's departure.

Observations from today
1. This season is going to be full of highs and lows. The high of last week carling cup semi and the liverpool win far outways today
2. The whole team and manager were naive today and must learn from it - at 4 or 5 nil the message should of come on just defend stop the goals. To many goals today came from us losing the ball up the pitch. Sometimes you have to no when to stop trying to play and dig in
3. Away from home against physical teams we need to stiffen the centre midfield - barry bannan is too lightweight
4. Weimann showed promise today and was MOTM for me for his movement and workrate
5. Joe Bennett and Eric Lichaj were poor today and for me this is an area we need to strengthen
6. A confident Chelsea team were too strong and too good.

Tell him Santa is a Villa fan and unless he shows some love for the Villa he's only getting an orange for Christmas.
We used to get an orange for Xmas..everyone was happy; everyone got a segment!

I think I'd rather win 8-0 but I get your meaning.

Totally agree
I must admit to being surprised that Westwood came off and bannan stayed on .
-
Lets be fair, they have some awesome midfielders. We had two schoolboys today and we never layed a glove on them.
Lichaj is a poor full back and they exploited the weakness time and time again. Mata and the like; quality and exprience.
-
Observations from today
Yes.
-
I think only Aston Villa could follow a great 3-1 win at Anfield by losing the next game 8-0.
Only real crumb of comfort is that we were battered 5-0 at City and responded by getting 9 points from the next 5 games and beat norwich in the cup so it is possible to respond positively to a total battering.
There is a huge gulf between the top 3 and the rest of the league imo, not just in points but mentality.
-
If you'd said we were guaranteed 3 pts from Liverpool (a) Chelsea (a) and Spurs home there are few on here who wouldn't have taken that. If we beat Spurs that total will have doubled and the fact that it may say something like 5 goals for and 10 against wont cancel out the 6 points. I'm sure the kids will be hurting and feel they have something to prove. As indeed they will also feel if we come to meet them again in March where the inevitable Chelsea complacency may well be welcome too.
Which is not to say that a record defeat is a comfortable thing to bear. Still, a New Year beckons, with a brighter future than the last which always threatened to be dismal from the start.
-
Awful result but i'll take one defeat every seven games
-
Sorry to be rushing to defend Lichaj again... but he's a right-back, not a left-back. Harsh to be overly-critical of him when playing out of position against one of the best teams in the World.
-

You pay Chelsea style transfer fees and wages, you get top players who are already good enough. Westwood has potential but Hazard and Mata were already ripping up their leagues when they were bought.
-

This bullshit ' Villa are so weak down their left' was repeated again and again by the witless on Sky's commentary team. Where did the goals come from? When did they score from Lichaj being beaten? It's just crap. Chelsea played through the middle of us - they rarely used the width and all three full backs were better than disgraceful.
-
Mata is fantastic, I think he's underrated as I'd have him as one of the best playmakers in the league. Same for Ivanovic at the back.
Anyone looking forward to playing them at Wembley????!!! Come on Swansea.

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has made no excuses following his side's 8-0 hammering at Chelsea on Sunday.
The Villans, who are three points above the relegation zone, were humiliated at Stamford Bridge with the biggest defeat in the club's history.
"We were second best all over the pitch," Lambert told BBC Sport. "I am not going to stand here and make excuses.
"We were beaten up pretty badly. The lads know that was not acceptable.
"Everything that could have gone wrong did, but you cannot let one game blight a whole season. We have been on a good run, but I wasn't getting carried away and it is the same again now."
Villa return to Premier League action on Boxing Day when they entertain Tottenham Hotspur.
-
From where I was stood, I saw Moses get at us time and time again.
Incredibly Lambert made us even more open and stretched the game at 3-0.
Glad to hear Gary Neville agrees with me.
-
Well that wasn't pretty. Didn't see it coming. Wasn't expecting too much but not that. Need to brush themselves down and go out and beat Spurs. If that happens all will be forgiven and forgotten.

Oh well it must be true then. How many assists for Moses?
-
To put things in context 5 players destroyed us today:
Torres - £50m
Hazard - £32m
Mata - £23.5m
Luiz - £20m
Moses - £10m
that's £135m of attack, if they all have a good game (I'd give all 5 10 out of 10 for today, they were exceptional) not many sides would cope with them.
What we did wrong was not go to damage limitation after the 3rd.
-
I am sorry but old people repeat themselves and I am an old person.
I said it after the Everton game, after the Southampton game, after the Man U game, after the City game and I will say it again.
Our team lacks mental strength. Our team is mentally fragile.
It is nothing to do with physical strength or physical fitness neither is it something which can be coached into players on the training ground.
Our players need to be talked to long and hard, by professional sports psychologists if necessary about developing a mind set which in effect says "I am an Aston Villa player, I wear the glorious colours which have faced and withstood the best players in the game over 138 years. I am not going to cave in. I will stop you, whoever you are." Our young players need to learn to strut and swagger and to walk the turf of Villa Park and everywhere else as though they own it.

I put the blame on the manner of this defeat firmly at Lambert's door.
We shouldn't be going into a game of this quality thinking because it worked against a poor Liverpool team it will work against the quality of Chelsea. We should have contained them and frustrated them and then introduced our style of play. Even that may not have worked and we still might have been tonked, but to let in 8 (eight) fucking goals in the manner we did, and, let's not kid ourselves, it could have been far worse, is completely and totally unacceptable for Aston Villa.
A huge dose of realism is what we got today.
-
Perhaps you saw a different game from me Mal?
The one I saw, they got at us every which way, but with a definite plan to target us down the left. It worked inside two minutes.
-
Nothing really to add to it, have our moan now then tomorrow, we pick ourselves up, dust ourselves up and we go again
Villa til I die
Well said - a very measured response. Are you sure you are only 20? A maturity beyond a number on here.

To be fair, I don't think Ashley Westwood, Joe Bennett or Matt Lowton thought this time last year they'd be expected to match players like Torres, Hazard and Mata on a regular basis. For most of our first team, they would have been expecting to make incremental steps up to a higher level rather than given total responsibility. So I cut them quite a lot of slack because of that.
However, they need to take the brickbats as well as the plaudits. Because there will probably be more of the former than the latter. It needs to be drummed into them that their youth is due to circumstance, it's not an excuse. Paul Lambert plays them because he feels they're good enough, not because he wants to blood youngsters.
-
We were lucky to get 0 today.
-
Unacceptable.

Yes because apart from this game we've done really well. It's not like we're only three points above the relegation places.
Well that's an original response and no mistake.
Firstly, it's better than using four letter words about fellow fans and secondly it may be unoriginal but it's also true. The view that it'll all be alright, the view we are doomed and the view that its all a bit of a worry but we'll probably be alright in the end (which is my view) are all unoriginal so I fail to see the point of the remark.

He should have tried to contain the GA amount, but instead carried on trying to compete with them. Once we were 4-0 down, he should have shut up shop, so to speak.
-
I wish a record defeat for Aston Villa was against a decent proper football club like Accrington Stanley or Notts County not stolen money fuelled chavs from west London.

The team they put out today including subs came to a total of in excess of £260 million. That includes paying what seems like peanuts years ago for Cole, Cech & Lampard...so you are probably talking nearer £300 million in todays money.
Piss poor excuse I know and no excuse for a dreadful display but it just shows what this league is all about now. When they click, Citeh and Chelski are light years ahead...
But it's a funny old game...we'll beat them in the LC Final you wait and see....!!

It was a bit like that Kevin Costner golf film, when he keeps taking on that shot on th 18th and finding the water; taking on bogey after bogey.

Yep, it was humiliating enough but we could have saved some face. In the end it was one of the most embarrassing results in my lifetime
-
That was as poor a looking Villa side as i've ever seen. Completely outplayed, out thought, and out shone. I'd say Guzan kept the score half respectable in some ways as they could easily have had 10+. I have no idea what Lambert was thinking today, but for me you could see after 10 minutes that he'd got it wrong. Why he didn't feel the need to change it I don't know.
Three at the back, all over the shop. No organisation or positional sense today. Looked like they'd never played together before. Wing backs, ahem, looked woeful too.
Midfield was men against boys, over run, out numbered and out played with ease. Westwood had to my mind his worst showing of the season. Bannan, ran around a lot and always showed willing but offered little else. Holman, well I forgot he was on to be honest.
Benteke showed today exactly why I think talk of selling Bent is utter lunacy. That was a young lad today, frustrated, frustrating and showing how raw he still is. We've all got a bit carried away with the lad to my mind, and in reality you cannot pin all of our goals hopes on him. Yes he's looked good, great even. But this is what you'll get from a young lad. He's still learning.
We currently have a four man strike force, ALL of whom should be able to score goals to hopefully help keep us up. There should never be a 'we don't need him, we've got him' line, we need OPTIONS. Benteke doesn't have to play every week, nobody does. It's about time we put all that nonsense to one side and realised it's a squad game. The best teams have options, we do to. And it's up to Lambert to use them and get the points we need to stay up.
The table makes for very grim reading still, and those 8 goals in the against column aren't going to help at all.
Onwards

So none of this applied in the last week when they 'strut and swaggered' around Carrow Road or Anfield?
-
Just saw the goals on Sportsday. No complaints, they simply blitzed us.
-
I want a fucking apology from every single player that represented Aston Villa football club on that pitch this afternoon.
If I dont get 3 points vs spurs - there will be hell to fucking pay.
I want all the wages for the players docked and a refund given to all the away fans who went there today.
I want the players to come in on Christmas fucking morning training with nothing other than a win for the home fans on Boxing day.
Lambert your motivation went to pot today, I cant have the excuse that they are a young team, the same players went to Anfield and won!
No Aston Villa team should ever be thumped 8-0 unless theyre playing Brazil 70' or Spain 2010'.
This is the worst defeat in our history, you players should be fucking ashamed of yourselves. Wankers.
Shell Shocked. Gut Wrenching. I want to fucking puke.
-
I'd say Given kept the score half respectable in some ways as they could easily have had 10+
We played with 2 keepers?
That makes the score line even worse.
-
Well fuck my old boots.
Lambert does seem to have a bit of a blind spot as far as defending is concerned, Norwich's Goals Against last season was pretty brutal too.
If we go down this will be one of the games referred back to time and again, make no mistake.
I just hope that in some of the games coming up (most likely after Tottingham at home) we win two on the bounce to ease the nerves somewhat.

Poor old Shay...concedes 8 even when dropped...

Perhaps you saw a different game from me Mal?
The one I saw, they got at us every which way, but with a definite plan to target us down the left. It worked inside two minutes.
The ball was played into the left channel, 15 yards inside the touchline and our half and crossed from there. Bannan was the closest Villa player. When you make a statement like ' definite plan to target us down the left' you are saying a wide man takes the fullback at every opportunity and plays effective balls into the box. That did not happen.
I say again how many assists did Moses contribute?
-

He makes a good point though. It's December, and we're just above the relegation zone. AGAIN. It's hard to see where these bright lights are. I've still got a huge question mark hanging over Lambert. It's a right old mess we've got ourselves into.
-
So none of this applied in the last week when they 'strut and swaggered' around Carrow Road or Anfield?
Well said Hipkiss92. There is no point in questioning character of our team and than ignoring the good bits.

-
I am going to pretend that this never happened.
-
What never happened?
-
Lambert needs to take this one on the chin. He got it all wrong and didnt make enough changes when he saw it was going wrong.
Oh well, onwards to Spurs.
-
It's consistency we need. Experience brings that consistency. I'd imagine players like Westwood and Lowton dreamed of days when they'd be on the winning side at a place like Anfield - training in the last week must have been a doddle. But what we need are players around them that can say 'these are the ways you pick yourself up' and provide advice on positioning, how to learn from basic errors etc.
-

Oops :D
Maybe Guzan needs a little wakey up call too. Nobody should be above the drop according to Lambert. I recall some folks wanting Given dropped for letting in 2 or 3
I await Lambert's Boxing Day team selection with a mixture of excitement and dread.
-
If it hadn't been for Guzan it would have been 10+.
-
I have been going since 1966. That may be the worst defeat ever, but its not the worst performance. The players should be hurt and also embarrassed with that result - I certainly am - but stuff like `not fit to wear the shirt` is a complete over reaction.
We have a young set of very promising players and all that potential doesn't dissolve away in 90 minutes. When we lost 7-1 there, that was a sign of how things were starting to go wrong. When we lost 6-0 at Newcastle it was a sign the wheels had come off. As heavy as this defeat is, it is not a sign that we are in a deep malaise with an incompetent manager and useless players.
After the last home game, many would have accepted a draw at Anfield and Stamford Bridge as a good sign of progress - well we come back to Villa Park on Boxing day one point better off than that !
With the right attitude from players and management, they can come back from this stronger and better. It may well be Lambert has to look at introducing a little more experience in the transfer window to help along the kids. Whatever he decides, on the evidence of his signings so far I trust him to get it right.
Come on you Lions !
-
If it hadn't been for Guzan it would have been 10+.
I know, I said that myself. He still let in 8 mind no matter how good they were.
-
Hipkiss, the problem is one of caving in when they lose their nerve. They did not reach the cracking point at Liverpool or Norwich but they very, very nearly did at Swindon.

They pretty much did against Everton, Spurs and Southampton too, though they only took the lead in the latter game.

But then I can point out they didn't in the cup game at Man City, there's clearly going to be games where they do or don't. But their not going to build up this kind of mental confidence within half a season, the regular players we had last year (Dunne, Collins, Warnock, Ireland, Zog) clearly hadn't in 5-10

None. That's the point I'm making. Mata however and Hazard took Clark and Herd apart time after time and it resulted in goals. Moses did nothing to any effect.
-
If it hadn't been for Guzan it would have been 10+.
I know, I said that myself. He still let in 8 mind no matter how good they were.
He conceded 5 at Man. City and then kept clean sheets in 3 of our next 4 league games.
Today just shows there's a huge gulf between the top 3 in the league and everyone else, not just finance but mentality aswell.
We were probably as bad at QPR but they're awful and can't score goals.
-
Does this unfortunate showing get Ted Drake off the record books. Was that the previous record score against us 1-7 with Drake scoring all seven (and at Villa Park) in 1935.
Nothing to worry about just one game.
We willbeat Spurs Boxing day its the law of averages.

Well said Andy, and like you I've seen worse displays by a Villa side. This week we saw Paul's pussies, last week we saw Lambert's lions - we all expected a transitional (rollacoaster) season. I.m enjoying the ride.
-
Moses parted our defence more times than Brady parted her legs.
Lichaj was terrorised.
-
That was 7-0. Our previous record defeat was 8-1, at Blackburn in the Cup in 1889ish.

Record league defeats, all while in Division One:
0–7 (v. Blackburn Rovers, 19 October 1899).
0–7 (v. Everton, 4 January 1890).
7–0 (v. West Bromwich Albion, 19 October 1935).
0–7 (v. Manchester United, 8 March 1950).
0–7 (v. Manchester United, 24 October 1964).
Record Premier League defeat: 7–1 (v. Chelsea F.C., 27 March 2010).
Record FA Cup defeat: 1–8 (v. Blackburn Rovers, 3rd round, 16 February 1889).
Record League Cup defeat: 1–6 (v. West Bromwich Albion, 2nd round, 14 September 1966).
Record European defeat: 4–1 (v. Royal Antwerp, 1st round UEFA Cup, 17 September 1975).

We didn't become world beaters overnight following the Norwich & Liverpool wins, so nor are we odds-on for the drop after today.
The equilibrium will re-balance after Christmans - it will be interesting what side is fielded against Spurs.
-
Fair play to the manager. He's managed to achieve two club records already and we're only 4 months in.
-
Just got back from the game, we got slaughtered but maybe we should have shut up shop instead of trying to still play with some fluency. Chelsea were on fire today, not much else to say.

At least Bradford will be a much more evenly matched contest.

It's Robbie Savage I feel sorry for tonight, I bet his tiny brain doesn't know what to think.
-
Paul Lambert on Blues loss.
Paul Lambert admitted his side were "beaten up" by Chelsea - but backed his players to come roaring back to their best against Tottenham.
Lambert accepted his team were "second best" to the Champions League winners in all departments and could even have lost by more than the eight goals scored.
But the boss stressed that there was no point mulling over the heavy loss at Stamford Bridge with a big game against Andre Villas-Boas's men coming up thick and fast on Boxing Day.
He said: "Everything that could go wrong went wrong.
"We have been on a really good run but we got beaten up today by a really good side. We were second best.
"We never turned up. We have been beaten pretty heavily. But we were second best all over.
"Their first goal went in early. But even so you've still got 80-odd minutes to go.
"Then the second goes in and then the third and then you think 'get to half-time to give yourself some kind of respite.'
"In the second half it could have been more to be perfectly honest. All credit to Chelsea, they beat us up today.
"You always learn when you win, lose or draw. That will be a wake-up call for us, that.
"Things have been going really fine for us. It was only Man Utd, Man City and Chelsea now who have turned us over. We will bounce back!
"We only have two days to mull over it but we have to go again against Tottenham on Wednesday.
"I am sure whoever plays on Wednesday will atone for that."
Lambert said there was no point throwing teacups in the dressing room because the players were more than aware of their deficiencies on the day.
He added: "They know. You can go in there and rant and rave all you want but it won't really do you much good. They know my feelings on it.
"But they know themselves that they have let everybody down.
"Now we focus on Tottenham. It's never easy to turn up and win a game.
"But you can't let one game blight what has happened of late. We will certainly try to bounce back as quickly as we can"

good job dougs gone he would be in work early tomorrow to ask lambo to clear his desk
-
As we are talking records, Chelsea won the 2nd half 5-0 exactly as the did at Leeds in the week - I would imagine that may be a first.
-
Lucky they were jetlagged and knackered otherwise that could have been really bad.
Started badly and went rapidly downhill from there.
I think Chelsea had our 3-5-2 mullered from the word go and Lambert didn't change it. Huge gaps on their wings to exploit, and they were well up for it.
Too many rash challenges around our box, especially from Herd who was like a bull in a china shop. You can't give Chelsea those opportunities on a plate.
Benteke was dreadful, almost every attack broke down because he was offside every frigging time.
Difficult to take any positives except maybe at least Brad stopped it being 9.
I predicted today might be a reality check, but if that's reality, pass the LSD.

Arrives home from London.... turns on TV............. accesses Sky Planner............ selects recording of Chelsea v Aston Villa...... presses Delete....... tries to forget today ever happened

we were beaten on evry position on the park and in the managers line ups, tactics and substitutions. very hard to take. we need to back this non performance up with a much better one on wednesday night. hopefully there will be a positive response. Not gonna talk about my favourite ref tonight either!

Does this unfortunate showing get Ted Drake off the record books. Was that the previous record score against us 1-7 with Drake scoring all seven (and at Villa Park) in 1935.
Record league defeats, all while in Division One:
0–7 (v. Blackburn Rovers, 19 October 1899).
0–7 (v. Everton, 4 January 1890).
7–0 (v. West Bromwich Albion, 19 October 1935).
0–7 (v. Manchester United, 8 March 1950).
0–7 (v. Manchester United, 24 October 1964).
Record Premier League defeat: 7–1 (v. Chelsea F.C., 27 March 2010).
Record FA Cup defeat: 1–8 (v. Blackburn Rovers, 3rd round, 16 February 1889).
Record League Cup defeat: 1–6 (v. West Bromwich Albion, 2nd round, 14 September 1966).
Record European defeat: 4–1 (v. Royal Antwerp, 1st round UEFA Cup, 17 September 1975).
every cloud and all that, having a 7-0 from West Brom knocked off the top of the (s)hit parade is at least some consolation

Not posted for awhile as things seemed to be going along nicely ! I must admit I was shocked at the scale and comprehension of our defeat, but I did wonder on Wednesday night when they scored 5 against Leeds carving their way easily through them, if it may be a "bridge too far " Obviously hindsight is a great thing and I would be lying if I said I didn't sit there at 4pm hoping for a win.
It does appear though that in some games it is literally men against boys, Chelski's side have been assembled for ridiculous money and they are used to winning easily if things go their way in a game. THey also have history of doing this to us (the older of us may remember Bobby Tambling scoring 4 goals in a 6-2 win at Villa Park in the sixties. Conversely we also have a habit of beating them more often than the other Champions League sides we face. This won't stop me going to Villa Park full of hope against Spurs ( my birthday ) and indeed nothing ever will however we are doing in whatever league.
All we and the players and Lambert (who's in only his second Premier league season) can do is take this on the chin, Learn from it a double our resolve to give everything for our club, not easy but has it ever been easy ?
-
Ouch... ups and downs... we'll probably win the League Cup now.
Then hopefully you will see we're actually ok.
-
Just in from the match, got a ticket in the Matthew Harding lower (amongst their choir) as soon as they noticed I was neither standing up let alone cheering any of their goals I was quickly found out. Abuse changed to pity quite quickly, though on top of it all I remain firmly behind PL and what he is trying to do.
I haven't read any of the posts here thus far but I hope we are in agreement that with the young squad that we have - the best thing PL can do is tell them all to forget about this one off battering and focus 100% on beating Spurs on Wed.
Up the Villa!

WE have two choices , slaughter the "babbies" who through no fault of their own represent us, or do as you suggest and give them our total support. That takes a shedload more class and "balls" than supporting the likes of Chelski.

While I'm fully behind what Lambert is trying to do (as our previous two results before today indicate) losing 8-0 is unacceptable so I can understand people being very angry particularly the ones that forked out 55 quid to watch that two days before xmas.
But remember after being trashed 5 at City we saw a response.
Let's see what the response is by the end of the Swansea game.

Our team lacks mental strength. Our team is mentally fragile
The main thing we lack is experience in the middle of the Park. You can have all the shrinks you want but without it days like today will happen particularly against such quality.
Repeating "Cool wet grass" a few times in the changing room beforehand wouldn't have helped them.

Know what you mean. Coming from behind to beat Norwich and beating Liverpool away was nothing but shocking mentality. How dare they go to Anfield and dig deep and win. How dare they come back to win 4-1 against a team who'd been on an amazing run that included beating Man Utd. No dignity. Nothing.

Remy. We are angry, frustrated and disappointed. It us alright making big bold statements like there will be hell to pay but that if all you are saying. There isn't a lot we as fans can do. That us the point. We can demand the managers head, to sack the board. But not a lot else, I say there should be a wall of silence to greet the players when they exit the tunnel and their effort in the next game be the reason for our coming back on side.

A wall of silence is not the answer, these players are young and hopefully hurting as much as the fans, we need to get behind them on Wednesday and give them our full support, they have plenty to prove and hopefully will redeem themselves and give us a Boxing Day to remember.

Rafa Benitez offered Villa words of encouragement after their heavy defeat to his Chelsea side, insisting: "Paul Lambert has good ideas and will improve Villa."
Benitez's Champions League holders comprehensively saw off Villa at Stamford Bridge, hitting eight past the men in claret and blue.
The Blues turned on the style to move back up to third place in the Premier League.
Fernando Torres continued his resurgence with a towering third-minute header to set them on their way.
And a stunning David Luiz free-kick and Branislav Ivanovic header gave them a strong lead at the break.
Frank Lampard marked his 500th Premier League start by crashing home a fourth on the hour and two strikes from substitute Ramires, an Oscar penalty and a fine individual effort from Eden Hazard rounded off the scoring.
But, instead of immediately hailing his own impressive side, Benitez took time out to applaud what Lambert is trying to do to improve Villa long-term.
He said: "It's never easy when you concede so many goals. You feel sorry for the other team but we are professionals.
"I will say something that is strange for some people to understand but I think they were doing really well in terms of the way they were moving and their gameplan.
"I could see it was good and it was difficult for us to counter it. We had to work very hard to control them.
"Obviously when you have a young group of players and you play against a top side, it's not easy.
"But in terms of what they were trying to do, you can see that the manager has good ideas.
"He will improve the team. They will be in a good position."
-

I usually politely applaud when they come out at VP these days and then give a quick shout of `Come on the Villa!`as the game kicks off.
Wall of silence ? Wednesday is another day, think I will make a point of yelling my head off for the 11 men in Villa shirts that come out.

I think we all need to calm down a bit.
We've lost 8-0 to the European Champions at a time when we have a team full of Academy players and they have a team full of players that individually probably cost more than our entire line up.
I appreciate the historical significance but if this helps Randy realise that we urgently need some reinforcements of experience and quality then in some way it may have been worth it.
Saying that, I didn't spend money going to Chelsea, nor have to listen to other supporters and can erase the match from my hard drive with it never having seen the light of day. Which i'm now about to do.
-
Don't forget that Chelsea were playing with jet-lag!
-
I am sorry but old people repeat themselves and I am an old person.
I agree entirely, but I wouldn't have a clue how to go about rectifying the situation. Sports psychologists sound like they are worth a try, but doesn't it just come from years of success at every level of a club? Chelsea and especially Manchester United have that toughness, Arsenal and Liverpool much less so. Liverpool have largely lost it, whilst Manchester City are trying to learn it (but haven't done so well enough to progress in the Champions League.
It's a worry that all of our young players that have been blooded in the last two and a half years have got used to losing football matches. It may seem unreasonable, but I lay some blame at MON's door for this. His squad building was completely unsustainable, buying in a whole new defence every season. When he left the young players all ended up being blooded together.
-
It's all about the response for the next two matches now. There have been signs of progress, a few genuine small steps forward and now a big step back. You can't argue with the worst defeat in the club's history, it's embarrassing. But we lost 7-1 a couple of seasons back to them; we also drew 4-4 with them and beat them 3-1 in recent seasons. This result only underlines there are a lot of lessons this young side have to learn, pretty fast. We'll soon find out how strong they are - and how good Lambert is - in how we move on.

As far as I'm concerned, the club owe me money.
An utter disgrace. £55 please.
-
Oh well.
I don't think the club owe anyone money. In football you sometimes win and you sometimes lose. It's the gamble you take when you pay for the ticket. We had an off day today. I'm not letting it ruin my Christmas.
-
Just how did we beat Liverpool last week - they must be shockingly bad. I have discovered one common denominator however. Score the first goal and we are fine, concede it and we are fcuked - if that doesn't tell us we need experienced heads in the middle I don't know what does - where's that thread about NRC.
-
IF we get to the final and IF it is against Chelsea I have no problem with that.
It's a different day and a different game.

Im still in Chelsea, not sure what to say or type on here. Feel numb.

I don't think the club owe anyone money. In football you sometimes win and you sometimes lose. It's the gamble you take when you pay for the ticket. We had an off day today. I'm not letting it ruin my Christmas.
Me neither.
-
Losing to spurs or Wigan (or both) will be more damaging
-
There aren't half some clever bastards.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
Just days after:
We are the champions of the world...
From Queen to REM in a week
With a nod to Ian Dury.
And a tad of Kirsty Macoll god rest her soul
" days I remember all my life......" Very apt this evening as I pour myself some
Falling down water that'll help me forget.
Up the Villa!

LAMBERT 'but we have to go again against Tottenham on Wednesday'
Fucking hell, it really is his catch phrase.
-
Im still in Chelsea, not sure what to say or type on here. Feel numb.
Thank you for going and supporting! We will have better days.
-
Before the Liverpool game I thought 3 points from that game and the next two would be a decent return. We have that already but, that said, while I was expecting a defeat today, I wasn't expecting the heaviest defeat in 138 years, However, we need to move on and not dwell on it as we did with the Arsenal game after getting hammered at Man City.
-
Can anyone post PL's comments on here post MoTD pls, I can't bear to see it again but am keen to hear if he says anything else about matters in the post match interview.

Lol, I hope so.
-
One fact remains true, and would have done so even if we had lost 25-0 today.
We are Aston Villa Football Club. And we are still, and will always be, the greatest team in the World.
We invented football, in case you didn't know.
-
Haven't seen any of the game as I was at The NY Jets v San Diego Chargers. A few beers in the stadium, with great food and brilliant facilities, Premier League take note. I recorded the Villa match on Fox Sports to watch later, but don't think I'll bother. Having a brilliant time and just can't be arsed with football.
-
Don't bother mate no positives to take from the game at all.
-
Just how did we beat Liverpool last week - they must be shockingly bad. I have discovered one common denominator however. Score the first goal and we are fine, concede it and we are fcuked - if that doesn't tell us we need experienced heads in the middle I don't know what does - where's that thread about NRC.
We beat Liverpool just like we lost to Chelsea by taking part in a game of football. Last week we were very good this week very bad. Your analysis is bunk. We went down twice v Man city equalised and beat them at their ground. Same at Norwich.
-
SHIT Happens!

Have a great time Mart. Missed you on the match thread, I reckon you'd have spontaneously combusted :-)
My contribution to this one is: Fucking hell. Roll on Wednesday. Perhaps.

Did the club make you buy a ticket and go to the game?

I saw something on Martyn Smith's Facebook about our record defeat so just went and got another bottle of (shit) beer. I was in a good mood because a) I got ID'd asking for a drink (which has never happened in the preceding 25 years) and an American woman did the whole "oh say something, your accent is amazing, you're so cute!" thing. And then I met a Browns fan, and we just gave each other a sort of sad, doleful knowing look.

I have posted the After 8 box with the Villa badge up on my facebook wall before any of my buddies can.
F**k it.
Suck it up and move on.
Tomorrow will be better as it will not be the day we lost 8-0.
Watch yer asses Tottingham Hotspurz.

If you're getting stuffed, as we clearly were, with a young squad, as we were, what's the point in shutting up shop to try and only concede 3/4/5?
Surely the players will learn more if they try and continue to play the way the boss wants them to. They'll develop and learn how to play together that way.
Yes, it's shit, I'm like a bear with a very sore head and I'm not happy. But, really, calling the whole team a disgrace, embarrassment etc does nothing. I guess he could drop them and play the kids though.....

Bollocks! It's personal choice, if you go and we win 8-0 should you pay double? It's football there's no guarantees if anyone who went thinks they should get refunded maybe they should choose another sport or another team!

On the plus side, Paul Lambert's settled his case against Norwich.
-
It is my birthday today. My dad and my brother are Chelsea fans. I watched the game with both of them. Today was not one of my better birthdays.
-
I have been following the villa since 1964 and i have seen a few batterings over the years, the Nottingham Forest 6-0 comes to mind and Chesea 7-1 a couple of seasons back but i can honestly say i cannot recall being so totally outclassed from the first minute to the 93rd. It was humiliating ,men against boys. Just like against Manchester City and Southampton we just seemed to throw the towel in once we let a couple in. Unacceptable as far as i am concerned
-
I asked a bloke today what time Villa kicked off , he said every 10 minutes .

Fack me, we battered them last week!
-
I don't feel as embarrassed as I should, it's weird but I probably felt worse after the Norwich draw than I did about today. I think when the score is this bad it just becomes comical, and it's hard not to laugh at yourselves.
We need to learn from this, and I'm sure the players, and Paul himself, will take all they can from it and move on. In Lambert We Trust.
-
Paul Lambert admitted his side were "beaten up" by Chelsea - but backed his players to come roaring back to their best against Tottenham.
We will certainly try to bounce back as quickly as we can."
-
Why is is that everyone connected with Chelsea has no class?
1) Their announcer stated just before the players came out: 'Welcome to the Villa fans and congratulations on winning the European Championship in 1981'. Wrong title and wrong year, twat.
2) The bespectacled bint of a steward who refused to let two Villa fans, both of whom have had knee operations in 2012, move to the empty seats on the left hand side as they could not see from their allocated seats because fans in front were standing up. Miserable bitch.
As to the match, I thought Matt Lowton had a decent game but, hey, Mark Fletcher was obviously watching a different match.
I agree with posters who have made the point that 5 of the goals were conceded after Ireland came on. At that stage of the match it should really have turned to damage limitation but Ireland and Holman simply cannot play in the same midfield against a team like Chelsea. Yet again, I was unimpressed by Bennett.
Disappointed with the fact that only two or three players clapped the fans at the end, but even more disappointed with one or two fans around me who chose to hurl abuse at the players.

Same here. The only taunt I got today was from a Liverpool fan. Even the local noses have kept their distance.
-
Perhaps you saw a different game from me Mal?
The one I saw, they got at us every which way, but with a definite plan to target us down the left. It worked inside two minutes.
The ball was played into the left channel, 15 yards inside the touchline and our half and crossed from there. Bannan was the closest Villa player. When you make a statement like ' definite plan to target us down the left' you are saying a wide man takes the fullback at every opportunity and plays effective balls into the box. That did not happen.
I say again how many assists did Moses contribute?
How many times did he part our defence?
None. That's the point I'm making. Mata however and Hazard took Clark and Herd apart time after time and it resulted in goals. Moses did nothing to any effect.
I think you're taking Lee too literally, mal. I think he's referring to Exodus Chapter 14, Verse 21.
-
Not posted for awhile as things seemed to be going along nicely !
Make that five goals.
-
Anyone still fancy us then in a one off cup final against them?
No? Thought not....
Yes, why?
There's still the little matter of them having to play Swansea.
...and us having to play Bradford.

-
I don't really agree. I thought chelsea played fantastically, and they were lucky as Hell and got two soft penalties. I've seen us play far worse than that and get away with a 2-0 loss.
-
Bollocks, just bollocks.
I shall erase this from my mind now and just hope it doesn't affect the players on Boxing Day.
-
This doesn't feel as bad as the 7-1 to me either. 8 goals came from our insistence on keeping the game open. Chelsea scored from roughly one third of their goal attempts. The count today was 26-7. To put that in context, Spurs got 0-0 out of Stoke with a count of 22-4.
We've looked a really good team at times this season, but when the dam is breached things really can go nipples up.
We desperately need to improve the midfield. They were distinctly second best today just as they were last week.
The big difference was that against Liverpool the back three were resolute and the front two electric.
Several players looked surprisingly lethargic. None more so than Benteke, who probably needs to stop reading his own publicity.
-

Nowadays if you work in the hospitality industry and you break any equipment or damage the companies property it gets deducted from your wages. The integrity of the club has been compromised plus it's the least they can do. If Wigan can do it so can we.

The hospital industry is being closed down by the banksters because it is a waste of their money. Wigan only have twelvety fans so they can afford to give them quality pies because and random refunds.

So is that 3 times in 6 years that a match between Villa and Chelsea at Stamford Bridge has had 8 goals in it?
5 years. Dec '07, Mar 10 and today.
+6 goals in Jan '11 and 4 last Dec.

We let 5 in after Ireland came on
Ireland offers nothing the sooner he leaves the better. Him and his wings can fly off.
No one else in our squad can spot the two key passes he made in the move that set-up Weimann's chance.

Only a complete tool would do that to themselves. He might have really bad Eczema and he's covering it up i doubt it's that though. He's getting paid £80,000 a week or £320,000 a month for a couple of 'key passes' and no goals wow.
We all know he's only playing for Villa because no other club would be stupid enough to pay him that sort of money.
-
Oh well. We all know that kids are going to be inconsistent but the bigger worry for me is Lambert's apparent tactical naivety.
Maybe I was expecting too much but I thought Lambert was coming to the club with real tactical nouse built up with his continental training. But too many times already this season he's got his tactics completely wrong with catastrophic consequences.
I don't think we've seen the last tonking we'll get under Lambert unfortunately.

My thoughts exactly Ad@m. I thought he would be very shrewd and canny but in fact he seems to me to be impulsive and making it up as he goes along. I hate to think what the state of of H and V would be if we had got a battering like that under the previous manager. Bodymoor Heath would be bedsheet central.
As for Stephen Ireland he only shows what he is capable of in flashes, in fits and starts. He is a classic case of a player living in the very well paid comfort zone on the strength of a reputation earned elsewhere. We keep trying with him because we think we can rehabilitate him. While we are attempting his rehabilitation without success we are languishing at the bottom of the table and Ireland is draining away a lot of money for very little return. He has been a failure in a Villa shirt and it is time to face up to that fact.

Agreed, yet he remains our current 'player of the year' from last season. How ironic...
I've just woken up to realise it wasn't a bad dream after all.....it really did happen!
-
Fans can be fickle d19, even in their choice of player of the year.
On the subject of bad dreams I woke at 3.45 awash with sweat and the damp duvet wrapped around my throat like a boa constrictor. My first reaction was that it must have been something I ate before I went to bed but it was only a bowl of muesli and some skimmed milk (I was off my food) then a big black number 8 floated into my feverishness and the true horror of the heaviest defeat in our history hit me.
I got up at 4, came on here and foolishly sought solace from fellow sufferers then went out in the pissing rain in the dark and cleaned six months mud and road grime off my farm van as some sort of catharsis. It did not work.
That defeat yesterday will either make or break our young side and it will either make or break Lambert.
I personally want the young team to be given the whole season and beyond to prove itself and I want Lambert to be given the same scope.
However, I do not see it happening. I think the voices calling for "proven" players and old sweats to be drafted in in January will become too strident. The cheque book will come out and we will scrape Premiership survival with a team playing percentage football. Take as many points as you can off other strugglers and put ten men behind the ball against everybody else. I hope I am wrong and this is just the muesli talking.
-

On a day of records you've set another Risso. Appearing on an H&V post match thread to announce you didn't go to the game, watch the game online or listen on the radio, have no intention of watching the recording and are on the verge of retiring from spectating entirely. Get your CV into MOTD as a summariser, you'd be perfect!

Seconded. You could win the Savage Scholarship awarded to the rookie pundit who comes up with the biggest generalizations based on the least information.

Sky were just willing Chelsea to score and the Torres and luiz love fest was sickening.
They talk utter shite and just made the 8-0 worse in my opinion. At one point they actually made reference to Steven Gerard playing with frank lampard, like Stevie g was actually out on the pitch against us.
Ps Phil dowd is a useless fat troll too and I still have not forgiven him for wembley
-
Ireland is a complete douche bag and I don't want to see him in a villa shirt again.
Thankyou.

Put it down as a freak result and look forward to 6 points vs Spurs and Wigan.
Up the villa.

I agree about Ireland. He is not onboard. Get rid.
-
To be honest it was said earlier in the season by someone on here, we will be like this with the the young players he is selecting - great result one week and a drubbing the next. I just hope their confidence is broken too much when we play Spuds.
That team was too young and not enough first team / top flight experience, didn't Bannan have the most league apps in that team y-day? Chelsea totally exposed this, we need quality older players in Jan, especially in defence.

i'm still positive about Lambert and believe in what he's doing, but 8 nill is 8 nill
no matter how we dress it up its still 8 fucking nill,
theres no getting away from that, i still have to blink when the score comes on the telly, it keeps saying Plastic Twats 8 Villa 0, its not easy for us
-
The last thing on my mind last night, and the first thing this morning.
That's how this bloody game gets to you.
As Tonyd says, 8-0 is 8-0. You can't dress it up, you can't sweep it under the carpet.
I think those representing us on the pitch yesterday owe us no less than 6 points over the next few days.
Do that and we just might start to exorcise some of yesterdays humiliation.
-
just woke up, first day of my holiday. i had a bad dream we were dicked by eight goals yesterday and i have had a thousand texts/ facebook messages taking the piss!
-
A record defeat that has lasted 123 years has gone - still pinching myself to be honest. I was worried that the hype that had built up over the last few weeks would backfire on us but not quite like this. Anyway my take on the players that will go down in the record books....
Guzman - made some great saves. Will forgive him the one he threw in at the end.
Lowton - best player but not enough cover for Herd.
Clark - statuesque for the first goal and never recovered.
Baker - kept being sucked into the middle leaving the left hand side horribly exposed time and time again.
Herd - must still be dizzy from trying to contain Hazard. Not good enough as a defender or midfield player. Gives too many free kicks away.
Lichaj - not a left sided player but not good enough to play as a wing back.
Westwood - our shape went after he was taken off. Wrong substitution.
Bannan - tried to link things up but looked a boy in a man's league.
Holman - completely anonymous and looked lethargic.
Weiman - never got in the game.
Benteke - on the plus side it will dampen the hype. He needs to improve his first touch and get hold of the ball.
Ireland - have always been his biggest fan and he's supremely talented but he needs to decide whether he wants to be part of what Lambert is trying to do. Looks like he will never get that hunger back.
Bennett - not impressed but needs games.
For Spurs and their pace and width, we will get murdered if he plays his full backs that far up the pitch.
-
All so predictable Hyped up in the press in the week and an absolute battering. All the small heathens who I thought had deleted their accounts out in full force last night. Highlight of their season. Sad gits
-
A nose text me last night (Small Heath spelling included):
'I wont you to do well and stop embarrissing us'.
I replied 'That's rich coming from the most embarrassing club in the world ever'.
-
I stepped In horse poo when I left the ground, summed the day up really.
Chelsea fans have no sense of humour, tried to have banter with them over the dividing fence, they were so angry, so to wide them up we held up our Kingston Lions flag, they didn't like that much either.
-
My busiest day of the year today at work and I have to go in , I will see at least 1000 people who most of them know who I support . FFS Im dreading it . Alcohol at ten I think , as that is what I am selling to the plastic masses.
-
Makes me angry when I read stuff about Ireland like "supremely talented" , wtf ? The guy is a lazy spoilt twat who doesn't deserve to play for us . Can't get rid soon enough.
-
I feel sorry for those who have got to go into work today. Hopefully only a few. I gave up watching at 4-0 couldnt take any more
.
If we capitulate to Spurs Boxing Day in the same manner Paul Lambert will have to move very quickly in the transfer window.
That is if Randy Lerner, remember him, provides funds to back the manager in his attempts to improve us.
However I think we will beat Spurs 2-0 and suddenly everything will be OK again for a few days.
But the biggest defeat in the clubs glorious history certainly takes a lot of getting used to.
And I havent yet.
-

I watched it on mute - it didn't make it much better.
Full marks for watching it, I couldn't go anywhere near it to be honest. I would have smashed the television such is my loathing for those tossers. I think the only saving grace is that this result will very quickly be forgotten in the maelstrom of Christmas games and will soon hopefully feel like it was a long time ago. The worst thing in our house is the silence, everyone knows they cannot even begin to discuss it with me - it's almost as if someone has died
-
FOR ME : That was disgusting and worst performance I've watched from a Villa side. I have to wonder if any other EPL this season would lose 8-0?!
Totally wrong tactics by Lambert. The formation needed changing once the 1st goal went in...realistically @ 3-0 ht then changes needed to be made. Herd is not a centre back, bannan far to keen to pass sideways or back when not over hitting passes. The midfield was exposed as seen in several of the goals and be better off playing a solid 3. I'm not happy with the outcome and this isnt a fergie style over reaction but it could have been double figures.
I hope and expect this to be a one off .. Lambert last season took a few beatings home and away in the main we are on right track. It just sad to see the reality check of how far away we are from the top teams..
Spurs at home will be different story.
-
It was painful to wake up this morning and just think, 'fucking 8-0.' However time to move on and we must have a massive reaction against Spurs.
-
".....Things have been going really fine for us. It was only Man Utd, Man City and Chelsea now who have turned us over. We will bounce back!...."
What about Southampton ?
-
Time for a few experienced players to come in January.
This result will never happen to us again. Piss poor but not time to start to much analysis, where would you start ?
Move on to Boxing day and an explosive atmosphere, wounded pride and the youngsters raring to go. C'mon Villa, give us something to smile about again and just forget this result. UTV.
-
up early, i felt a bit numb about the whole thing yesterday,
but now its sinking in a bit it feels worse, Christmas Eve and feeling like shit all because of fucking Villa
Put it down as a freak result and look forward to 6 points vs Spurs and Wigan.
Up the villa.
i'm still positive about Lambert and believe in what he's doing, but 8 nill is 8 nill
no matter how we dress it up its still 8 fucking nill,
theres no getting away from that, i still have to blink when the score comes on the telly, it keeps saying Plastic Twats 8 Villa 0, its not easy for us
Exactly. It's all very well saying we're a young team etc etc. It was still an 11 made up of internationals and U21 internationals, with an experienced manager. Non-league teams would have turned up and not got beaten 8-0. I'd question Lambert as it was quite apparent early in the game we were going to get murdered and he did nothing to change it. For example, I'd have gone 4-5-1 with Herd protecting the back four after about 15 mins.
The only good that can come of this is it prompts some spending in January. We need quality and experience to come in, particularly to give us some options for these games. We're playing a very dangerous game if we're going to gamble on these kids keeping us up and getting valuable experience in doing so.
-
I'm really looking forward to seeing a positive reaction on weds and the players know they need to deliver- we need to win these 2 home games.
-
Agreee on all points, Adam.
Lambert is the complete opposite of Pullis, he doesn't seem to know how to shut up shop, he only seems to know/want to play open football. He played right into the hands of Benitez yesterday, who's no idiot when it comes to tactics. When you allow with the attacking threat of Chelsea to dominate the midfield, unchallenged for 90 minutes, you really are putting your head in the lions mouth. Lambert's to the slaughter.
Yesterday will only be stomachable if he learns from it. Of course we want to be entertained with attacking, progressive football but be also don't want to be humiliated by naive tactics. It's not really asking too much.
-
At 3-0 the game was lost so we should have closed ranks and tried to tighten up the defence rather than going gung hu and leaving ourselves repeatedly exposed to attack.

the reason we didnt shut up shop in my view is because we wouldnt know how to, i just cant see that young side being able to do that.
there is no one on here been more behind the inexperienced team than me, actually wanting us to go with the youth, and i still do,
but Chelsea yesterday just kept going, they knew they were giving us the run around, they knew some of the youngsters were fragile when the goals kept going in,
but they just kept on going.
cant blame Chelsea for that, but still horrible to see young lads getting battered, completley battered, if there was any justice it would have been stopped on humanitarian grounds
-
Lampard was making his 500 top flight appearance. I would wager that is double the number our starting XI have made.
-
Ok just about ready to face the aftermath, I watched the first half not the second . how bad was it ?
-
It was one of those games you just wanted to end after it got to 4-0, you knew it was going to get worse. The 2nd goal killed us.
It's happened now, it's one we need to forget. 4 points over the next couple of home games will settle things down again.
-
Its days like yesterday that emphasise the moral corruption at the heart of modern football. A chelsea starting team put together at a cost of £200M running riot against an Aston Villa starting team put together at a cost of £12M. Any gloating Chelsea fans should be aware that this has only been made possible by Abramovich stealing from ordinary working Russian people. That said, we shouldn't have given them so much space.
-
Paddy Power must have thought 'who is this twat?' When I put my £20 on Villa to win at 8-1.
A few pints later and it is all forgotten but seeing 8-0 in print brings back the humiliation. You begin to realise how supporters of Bon Accord must have felt that day at Arbroath.
-
Quite a surprisingly fair piece about Chelsea and us after the game http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/20835394.
It seems the press have the same goodwill as the majority of us fans towards what Lambert is trying to do.
Can't think of many teams getting stuffed 8-0 and getting so much leeway.
-
I put on my Claret and Blue tinted glasses this morning and thought of the positives we can take from this:
1, Guzan, without him it would have been 12+
2, We were first on Match of the Day!!
If we get to Wembley let's hope it's them we get, and serve them with a cold piece of revenge.

It's not the side that can't do it, it's Lambert. We were powerless in midfield, no guts, no fire, we basically never got near them. You can't expect to go to Cherlsea with all their attacking strength and expect to go head to head. There was only ever going to be one winner. It's hardly rocket science.
Maybe if we'd gone 451 the centre backs would have given Torres more and closer attention, Herd could have sat in front of the back four and got stuck into them. At least we would have got closer to them, we made it so easy for them, giving them so much space and with their talent and technique, they just passed the ball through us whenever they felt like it.
I'm not for one minute suggesting we'd have come away with something but I very much doubt we'd have been talking today about a humiliating, confidence sapping slaughter.
-
Most teams have a freak result in a season
Utd beat Arsenal 8 - 2, then lost at home to Blackburn & got well and truly stuffed at home to CITY
Wigan beat Arsenal at their place
We beat Chelsea last season at their place, and then last week beat Liverpool, and then get our back sides kicked by Chelsea
These results will happen, what will be interesting is to see how the team responds to this!
We can only hope that we come out of this ok!!!
If we dont this could be a pivotal result.
-
There's more important things in life.
I've just watched the Snowman and at the end he melts and I cried and its not fair.
-
Losing isn't the issue.
Shipping 8 goals is.
Embarrassing. Hope all our fans that went are getting a refund.

Totally agree and should have rested key attacking players, like Benteke, for Spurs.Yes,lambert got the substitutions wrong but you don't get 2 successive promotions and safety in the Premier League if you are tactically naive,as some suggest.Media pundits and some Liverpool fans praised the way our back 3 defended last week, now They, especially Herd ,are being pilloried. Defenders need help from the rest of the team. After the changes,Bannan,Ireland and Bennett offered pitiful resistance.
-
I think the most alarming thing was that if we're honest 8-0 flattered us.

you could be right,
my heads all of a spin to be honest, dont know what i'm doing or saying, its a bugger for sure
-
never been to fussed about Chelsea before, even with all there money i still didnt get excited about disliking them
but yesterday they made our young team grovel, they ground them into the dirt, and while i cant blame Chelsea for doing that i hate them like never before
-
Agree that at 3-0 down we should have tightened things up tactically. Was Vlaar injured? definitely need to bring him back in the next day.
Lichaj is nowhere near good enough at left back but things got significantly worse when he went off. Bennett looks frighteningly out of his depth at the moment. Frankly I thought he was a disgrace upon his introduction. Baker was all at sea trying to cover that space. Herd on the far side was as bad. Definitely Delph and El Ahmadi should have been introduced and the likes of Benteke taken off and rested. Bit unfair castigating Ireland, he was very good on the ball when introduced. The likes of Holman and Bannan are equally as bad without the ball as he is. Westwood not far behind. True for the 60k a week he gets he has been a huge disappointment but was instrumental in the only decent move we put together during the game.
Like at City we collapsed after going a few goals behind. That is worrying and has nothing to do with inexperience. You play to the final whistle from u-10s to seniors but a lot of our players need severe reminding of that fact. Lambert didnt help matters really and it is the end of the 3 centre backs experiment. The likes of Herd and Baker will have their confidence in bits after that game. Vlaar to come back next to Clark for the next game and pack the midfield. A point against Spurs will be a great result after that hockeying.
it is only one game at the end of the day. Chelsea were outstanding and will get back into the title race imo.
-
I think the most alarming thing was that if we're honest 8-0 flattered us.
Yes could easily have been 12-0 Possibly more
-
You can not go to Chelsea, switch off at the back and then give the ball away so casually in the first 20 minutes in the way that Holman and Bannan did. They played like some one had died and in the end they did. It was apppalling and added an extra point to survive.

Record FA Cup defeat: 1–8 (v. Blackburn Rovers, 3rd round, 16 February 1889).[10]

Another been there, done that, to add to the record.

I don't agree that either Bennett or Ireland were a disgrace. They were clearly playing to (rather cavalier) instruction. We were playing a sort of 3-1-4-2 by the end, with Weimann and Ireland behind two forwards and Bannan holding. We were so open it was ridiculous.

I think we need to see Bennett at left back against spurs , he is a natural left footer and lichaj looked poor , Bennett needs to deliver when given his chance though as Stevens looked a capable deputy last month.
If going 3 at the back I'd be inclined to use Lowton there rather than herd and switch lichaj to right back maybe, hoping Vlaar will be back soon.

Well spotted Eastie. Just a copy and paste from Wiki. Wasn't at the Albion game either but did go to Antwerp.

I know the feeling I was about ready to explode yesterday watching it my wife who supports Chelsea came home from work with her folks just as the 6th went in, then I had comments like "it's only a game". None of them could understand why I was pissed off. I shouldn't have come on here yesterday though when it finished I posted some rubbish should know better really.
One thing that did make me smile yesterday I had to go up town after the game was walking through the city centre and saw two guys walking towards us, they were nicely drunk and singing Villa songs as loud as they could they stopped to sing outside the Villa shop as well, makes you proud to be a Villa fan and why we have the best fans in the world.
-
As far as I'm concerned, the club owe me money.
An utter disgrace. £55 please.
Apologies for being a drunken cock last night. Way too many beers when I got back to my mate's place, coupled with some Chelsea fans lying in wait for me led to this :(
I'm still pissed off, mind.
Anyway, merry Christmas all and up the Villa :D
-
It feels worse today. Been trying it avoid SSN head bloodlines!! And this thread to 30 pages is not doing me any good either so I will wish you all a very merry Christmas and see you on Boxing Day when e have a game of football to win.
-
Must admit its out of my system, I expected to lose but not that badly, the real winnable games are in the next fortnight and a won over spurs would lift our spirits greatly- another day another dollar!
-
Just bumped into my neighbour who is a Chelsea fan. He knocked on my door yesterday morning to offer me a free ticket but I was still in bed.
A narrow escape.
-
I thought we were unlucky, it could have gone either way.
-
Did anyone else see the Villa fan giving torres the middle finger Peter kay style when he was subbed, would love to see it again, don't think it will make the 3rd eye on soccer a.m

Has there been any public apology to the travelling fans for this debacle.
I'm not one for demanding a refund but usually when a team is humped in this fashion the club usually comes out with so form of apology. I certainly remember Wigan coming out and apologising to the fans after there humping at Spurs a couple of seasons back but so far I've heard very little from AVFC or have I missed it during the Xmas excesses
