Fookin brilliant!  Take that O'Pube!  Love to hear the boos at the end.

Seriously impressive performance from a very young, very attacking side.  Okay, Sunderland are shite but we played really really well from front to back.

WOW Lambert got it stop on today!!! Unlucky that we didn't score more. Clever to take Lichaj off even though he was dissapointed (better before he was sent off). Subs were all spot on!

Not been this happy for a Villa result in a long, long time!!!

Great performance for much of it..

Benteke, Lowton, Vlaar, Westwood and Guzan were all bloody brilliant signings by Lambert. Needs time and backing, but beating Martin O Fucking Neill was lovely. The little knob.

Fantastic. We needed that sooo much!

Pretty good performance I thought. Clark, Westwood, Bannan, Benteke all excellent I thought. Ireland had a class second half after a disappointing first

Lowton is a real threat going fwds. Not sure about him defensively / positionally though.

Guzan 6
Lowton 7
Vlaar 7
Clark 8
Lichaj 5 (Stevens 5)
Westwood 8
Bannan 7
Weimann 6
Ireland 7
Gabby 7
Benteke 8

we won that by a mile despite what the scoreline reads. Lucky for us we're playing Sunderland and they are awful. We have to be more clinical. Still absolutely delighted to get the win. Benteke was terrific. Really splendid.

Post by: Monty on November 03, 2012, 04:59:15 PM
Westwood and Bannan were excellent in the middle, and can only get better. Ireland was really not good first half but was a threat in the second on the break and worked harder. Vlaarke were superb, Guzan imperious, Lowton very assured, Lichaj a bit of a bombscare (Stevens looked competent when he was on) and Agbonlahor and Weimann never stopped working, the former deserving his goal.

As for Benteke - I love him. We've really got some player on our hands there.

Important in terms of the league table, important in terms of the development of this young team and important in terms of ramming up the arse of one particular individual the fact that AVFC are - and have always been - bigger that one man's ego.

3 much need points, a clean sheet and a league goal for Gabby.  Can't complain.  Impressed with Westwood, and Benteke looked very good.   Gabby for me is much more use away from home where his pace is useful for attacking from deep.  Not sure why Ireland is getting a slagging again, he screws things up at times but he also makes things happen in the final third.  We look much better going forward with Bannan, Ireland and Weimann in the team for me.

Have to say a good result against a poor team. The whole team played well , but the movement of Ireland , Weimann, and Gabby was better than for a long time, and the quick , clever passing of Bannan and Westwood played to this.

Have to say with a bit more confidence, we would have won this game by 3 or 4 goals.

Every now and again , you can see what/how PL is trying to play, and it looks a good style.

I wonder who gets dropped for KEA against Man U? Tough call. Westwood was excellent, but Bannan does un-Villa like things like get it, give it back and move off the ball. The 4231 looks a decent shape for us, to me. Can't see Bent playing in that formation though.

Clark was very good today. He's toughened up a lot since the Everton game I think

We created many more clear cut chances and should have buried them, I thought Ireland came back really well and had a good second half as well. However as said already Westwood was superb and should be starting a lot now. Benteke is an absolute monster, and Vlaar put in a captain's performance. So good to have that winning feeling.

PL pulled a masterstroke by telling Ireland to push up alongside Benteke second half. When they were closer together they caused Sunderland a lot of problems, wheras in the first half Benteke was doing it all by himself. Very happy tonight.

What I loved, apart from the 3 points was how our midfield picked up the ball when headed out by the defence. The calmness, quick one-twos, the driving forward, the movement of turning defence into attack was at times a joy to watch.

Every Villa player deserves great credit for the effort today, not to mention for reminding us they are a talented bunch who can with a little bit more confidence get better and better. Special mention to both sets of fans, though both really played their part in an exciting game.

Sleep well Davey and MackemDawg. Look on the bright side, O'Neill won't be there for ever and Sunderland deserve better.

It was great to see the players celebrating after the game, they've been under a lot of pressure. I thought we were great for the last 20 minutes. We didn't sit back until we were too knackered to do anything else.

We've been bloody unlucky with our injuries though, would really help if we could play a settled defence during a game, let alone from week to week.

No one will expect us to get anything from the next few games but who knows what might happen with a bit of confidence...anythings a bonus really.

Great and much-needed result. I know they're a poor team but I thought we were excellent all over the pitch.

Sunderland's attacking was very predictable, but still tough to defend against, your centre-halves need to be strong and ours were, which bodes well.

Chuffed with Westwood. Was a bit worried that PL hadn't picked him with all the chopping and changing but he came through with flying colours.

I'm a big fan of Bazza so it's nice to see him getting some praise.

Benteke did well and my main man got the winner. The front two got on the ball a lot today, deep, with their back to goal, and in wide areas. Bent would have been nowhere to be seen in any of those situations. Probably would have been where Gabby was for the goal but that's it.

Well done Villa, PL and the travelling fans.

Slip that one in your case file, you big speccy, tracksuit wearing, merkin-headed, spiteful, dummy-spitting, back-stabbing, money-wasting, club-wrecking fucking bastard son-of-a-turd fraud.

Nicked.

Likewise. Thanks, Jimbo!

How good was it to see us play well today?

Very good. Very good indeed.

My version had a slight re-write: "Slip that one in your case file, you big speccy, tracksuit wearing, merkin-headed, spiteful, dummy-spitting, back-stabbing, money-wasting, club-wrecking, fucking bastard son-of-a-turd Judas poison-dwarf, pube-headed fraud."

Good post.

Yes that sums up my sentiments as well.

Westwood and Bannan complemented each other on and off the ball. There were a couple of times where they passed the ball out of defence really well, and they press the ball as a duo admirably. Was so impressed by their defensive work as well, Westwood harries opponents off the ball with great persistence and gusto, and Bannan's occasional popping up as a third centre back was a pleasant surprise. This was very promising today.

Great win, and a very important one indeed. Agree with the praise for Westwood and Bannan, Benteke looks like an absolute bargain and I remain convinced that we are a better team with Ireland present. Hopefully Clark and Vlaar can have a settled period in the team now, I think they are our best combination at the back.

Well done to Paul Lambert, got everything spot on today. We can go into the next games with nothing to lose and with the pressure lifted a bit who knows. How I would love to see us beat United.

You'll all be pleased to know that I did my little bit for that victory by not watching the game. Every game I've watched so far this season Villa have been awful, so I decided to try something different.

I nearly did the same. The one league game that I haven't seen was Swansea - when I was in hospital having my ankle reconstructed. I had been wondering whether it was me and for the first time since Fulham at home (March?) I've finally seen us win a game.

Played really well today and the 4-2-3-1 suits us much better. Everyone's been right to point how well Benteke and Westwood played but Bannan was probably MOTM for me. We've been looking better defensively for a few weeks now and finally have a clean sheet to show for it. The commentator was right about the core of the team playing very well. Guzan, Vlaark, Bannan, Westwood and Benteke all excellent. Benteke's really started to look settled since he came back from the last international break.

Of the others, Ireland messed up a few passes but he was always looking to get involved and was a big influence for us. He never stopped running. Lowton I actually looks good defensively - he just needs to work on his crossing. Lichaj looks very average to me, I'm not sure how long he will be around for before he's moved on. Gabby looked more like the 'old' gabby and Weimann might have scored on another day - he looked absolutely knackered by the 80th minute.

Let's hope we get 1 or 2 surprise results out of the next fixtures that nobody was expecting. If it doesn't happen though, we need to keep our heads up. The majority of our points were always likely to come in the second half of the season anyway. Football-wise, we've had an awful 2012 but its nearly over now.

If we beat United it would be dreamland, but we are a strange side for top teams to play at the moment, unpredictable and the Benteke factor will unsettle United I am sure. Despite being top, I am not convinced they are all that at the moment.

Quote
Paul Lambert spoke of his pride at the performance of his lions at Sunderland, hailing them as "absolutely fantastic."

Lambert was delighted with not only the effort on show but also the quality in all areas, typified by the monumental displays of Ron Vlaar, Ashley Westwood, Christian Benteke and Gabby Agbonlahor.

Boss Lambert said the victory at the intimidating Stadium of Light was "massive" as he looks to drive the team on.

He described the performance overall as the best display since his arrival at the club.

He said: "That was great. I thought the lads were absolutely fantastic.

"I think they deserve a lot of credit after the knocks they've taken. I am delighted for them.

"We were down to the bare bones and there were some massive performances in there.

"Ashley Westwood - in his first game at this level - was absolutely outstanding.

"You'd think Ashley had played at this level for about five years. He was excellent. For someone to come from Crewe and slot in like that and play like that, he was outstanding.

"I thought Christian Benteke was unplayable at times. Gabby is right on the top of his game at the minute.

"I am proud of them. They were absolutely brilliant. As a whole I thought that was our best performance. We played well against Swansea and West Brom in parts. I thought we were outstanding overall.

"To come to a place like this and win the game I thought it was deserved. We were full of energy.

"I thought we looked a threat. I think we're playing really, really well.

"We just have to keep going. That was a massive win for us.

"I think as a group we defended really, really strongly. We have young lads and they are full of energy and endeavour. We defended strongly as a team.

"This is a right tough place to come. There won't be many teams who come here and beat them. I thought we deserved to win the game."

Lambert now has his eyes on a tough festive period, starting with Manchester United on Saturday.

He added: "Now it is well within their capabilities to keep going. There will make mistakes because they are young but the progress we are making is good.

"We go into next week's game now and it's against one of the best teams in Europe.

"We are at home, we will give it a right go, the crowd will be right behind us. The crowd were great today. We were progressing, that's for sure."

The only bad news was Wigan and Norwich both winning. I thought Sunderland were pretty poor, they didn't have many decent chances that I can remember.  Saha should have scored.

I wouldn't be sorry to see Bent go if we can get decent money for him. I would trust PL to use the funds wisely. His summer buys have all been quite astute.  Good value and I doubt any are on anywhere near the kind of wages Volders was used to handing out.

Am pleased with Lambert how, quite unlike O'Neill, he's quick to rectify past errors and I think most of us were pleased when we saw the line up.
Bannan and Ireland do give the ball away at times but my word do we look like a better team for having some good footballers in there.

Westwood is a very promising footballer and it makes you wonder why we haven't seen more of him. Was Delph dropped or injured? Hard to imagine Lambert picking him instead of those two. They were like our very own (much less good) Iniesta and Xavi today.

IF and it's still an if, we can get better towards the end of the season and stay clear of trouble, I get the feeling we could really grow over the next few seasons under Lambert. One window and he's already signed some very decent footballers for the future, with 3 or 4 behind him and with our new scout we could have a really proper team in the years to come.

Just have to maintain the optimism throughout our next few nasty fixtures and not revert to hoofball!

As some of us said early on, there will be a lot of ups and downs this season. In all competitions it's W5 D3 L5.
The team and Lambert will make mistakes as they are young and still learning. But ask yourself this, would you rather have Lambert who at least tries different things even if some of them fail, or the busted flush this is Pube "One shot on target" Head and his same old tactic week in week out. Even Saha coming on reminded me of when he used to bring on Carew/Heskey, even the timing of it was pretty much the same.

As some of us said early on, there will be a lot of ups and downs this season.

Who are these elite few?  Who genuinely didn't think there would be ups and downs?  Or expected that we'd somehow cut a swathe through the division?

Some of us expected a few more ups than downs, that's all.   And didn't envisage getting hammered away to a struggling side like Southampton, and outplayed at home to Norwich.

Today was good -and much needed.   But not many teams will concede the space Martinoneillssunderland did to us, enabling our midfield to have one of it's easier afternoons.

We will face far sterner challenges than that, even just to give us the 7/8 more victories we'll need to ensure survival. But hopefully we have some forward momentum now, and we don't fall back, as we did after the Swansea game.   Winning and remaining in 17th place is a bit of a pisser, mind.

Easy enough to check who hasn't gone all Rita Hayworth whenever we haven't won and hasn't predicted Benteke is the new Heskey or relegated us after 8 games. My point is that it's impossible to judge either Lambert or the team yet.

And yes, it's a big pisser that there isn't the psychological boost of moving up the league a few places.

Mons take on the game

"We didn’t deserve to get beaten.

We probably should have won the game but the ball just didn’t drop for us today.

We’re not scoring goals, we’ve had people in and around the penalty area, but it just doesn’t seem to be happening for us.

I could not fault the players’ effort whatsoever. I think it was epitomised by a fantastic performance from Lee Cattermole.

It was as good a performance as I have seen from a player and he didn’t deserve to be on the losing side.

We drove at Villa and tried everything but we were unable to wear them down.

We need to be resilient. It’s been tough going and we’ve found ourselves in the situation where we’re not getting goals.

You wouldn’t think we would have that problem with all of the attacking players we have in the team.

We have to stick in at it and we’ll come back from this.

We have to remain strong and be resilient – we’re all in this together."

That's more like it.  Really good performance today and we were worthy winners.  Ireland can be hit and miss, but not many other players spot the sort of opportunities he does.  Bannan played really well, as did Benteke, Vlaar and Gabby.  And O'Neill's effusing over that thug Cattermole sums up why I hate his approach to football.

Yup. As he scored. No wonder Gabby was in pain, that's the BBC article's headline photo, too.

I know it was a goal, but he still shoulda been carded. That's a career ending tackle that.

I can wear a player like Ireland being hit and miss.

Comes with the territory, creative but mercurial talents are often like that.  Except for the very best.
It's when your centre halves and other defenders are hit and miss, ike Dunne the last two years and like Vlaar this season that you can have problems (In fairness to Concrete, he has looked better these last few games).

I would have expected a few more assists off Ireland though, if I'm honest.

Maybe in some games he's trying to do too much or- like last season- he's been played too deep.

Would be good if our midfield was solid enough to say 'don't worry about anything else, just operate in the final third.'  At the moment we can't really do that though.

Absolutely chuffed with the win today. Given the run of games coming up, we desperately needed to get a bit of breathing space above the bottom 3. The fact we are still 17th is neither here or there, it's the 5 point gap that's important.

A lot of posts saying how poor Sunderland are, but fact is that was their first home defeat in the league this season.

I was seriously worried after the Norwich game (who have now won 3 and drawn 1 of the last 4 !) but what a difference a week can make.

Benteke is looking a better and better signing by the week.

Not sure why Ireland is getting a slagging again, he screws things up at times but he also makes things happen in the final third.

I'm a massive critic of Ireland and have strongly argued he offers absolutely nothing going forward - no pace, no assists, no goals, but ...... I have to admit he does make himself available for a pass, giving the defence and the rest of midfield an alternative outlet rather than a long ball down the centre or into the channel - as a result we look a much better team.

To start with, O'Neill did a lot of good in many respects. Then came the bizarre signings, the round-peg in square-hole player line-ups and the lack of a Plan B when Plan A was not working. His stock fell after the Moscow debacle and crumbled when he left us in the shit 5 days before the start of the season. I'll never forgive him for that.

I never used to mind Sunderland, I always preferred them to Newcastle and spoke to many fans when they come down and they were level headed honest and easy to get along with.
Since pubehead took over I've looked for their result straight after Villa and Cheltenhams, I'm delighted they're struggling and love seeing him squirm, since the day he walked out I've regarded him as nothing but a judas, I bought into the O'neill vision and loved having him here, media was positive about us, we were fearless and in cup finals. Looking back shown me he was purely a short term manager, it was shit or bust and he failed, walked out and blamed it on Lerner for not shoving a load of cash for him to buy the next Emile Heskey.

Todays result was sweet, it showed that tides are turning, were becoming a team again slowly, while he enters the final stages of his career and the few idea's he had have been found out.
I'll quite happily forget about him now until we next play them, as soon as he's sacked I'll get back to not minding Sunderland.

Despite all that though, 3 points is the most important part of the day, lets hope results go our way tomorrow and maybe we can dream of beating Manure?

Good point KG, about Ireland.I'm a big Ireland fan, but would admit that i expected more goals/assists from him.

Having said that Weimann should have scored, as should he himself, and he is probably the only player we have on our books who can play in that position, and in this system that PL seems to like to play.Would like to see N'Zog get a go with Benteke as he seems like a real team player.

Thats a great stat about Weimann, and even more reason to play him.

Don't think I could've put it any better, a very sweet and much needed victory. Still in for a difficult next three weeks but at least there's now a buffer between ourseleves and the bottom 3.

Vlaar is the key I think. He's improved a lot in the last few games and it's not even like defensively we've been that bad except for that second half at Southampton. Not too bad when there's mostly kids in there.

Pleased Westwood did well. A friend who watches Crewe a bit reassures me he's a very competant ball playing midfield, just needs time.

Few interesting selction situations for next week, think I'd still bring KEA back as I think it would be naive to just assume WestWood can hold against United on his own. Probably bring Holman in for his energy but keep Weimann and Ireland in please.

Ireland's too consistently mediocre to deserve the term 'mercurial'.  Even when he's having one of his better games  he rarely makes a decisive contribution.  Yes, he improved in the second half today but as a big money signing and, in the context of this squad, as one of the senior players he simply has to contribute more.

very good performance, we stood up and was counted after the break when sunderland came heavily at us, and have the bravery to try and pass the ball out instead of just clearing. westwood and bannon were strong in their positional play and used ireland well as an out ball. i never really panicked at all during the match and was confident wit our play. This result has been earned by the learning of a new system and an added belief in each other!

Its such a nice warm feeling when we win a Saturday league game and very sweet when its against MON, it keeps us in touch with Wigan and Norwich and gets us level with Stoke and Sunderland plus further away from the bottom 3 so we can now breathe a bit easier, played some nice football and the midfield was so much better, I wanted at least 4 points from Norwich and Sunderland and we got them, well done Paul Lambert and all the players.

It sure is nice to have this warm fuzzy feeling on a Saturday evening again.
Any 3 points would have been gratefully received TBH but the fact that we showed Judas Pubehead up to be the spent force that he is makes it all the sweeter.
Delighted that Westwood put in such a good performance today as I hadn't seen much in him when he was on the pitch for us previously.

Good performance, it is one win against poor, poor opposition.

All of a sudden, MO'N is starting to look a very outdated style of manager....I just think he doesn't have the hunger for it anymore which is manifesting itself into bigger crap on the pitch because of this and the poorer players at his disposal.

A win is a win is a win however.

Well, that was piss poor.  We're still an absolute shambles.  This season of "ups and downs", and "peaks and troughs" seems to be light on the ups and peaks thus far.

We still appear to be waiting for the ups in this so called season of ups and downs.  Really, it's just more of the same as last year, with a slightly more palatable manager.

He knows this and will sort it. We can't keep doing what SB did and just buy loads of players every transfer window.

It may be shit to watch but we'll improve slowly and it'll be planned. 2 or 3 in January and fingers crossed, we'll be fine.

Not sure it's fair to have a go at the fans who are showing hope. We're better than that, even if we might know a few things that they don't.

PS: Not you, curious.

It should be made a site policy that anyone going onto a Sunderland board to comment on MON should start the post with [SPOILER ALERT].

Well there's a shock. MOTD make it look like we robbed Sunderland. Funny, the match I watched we could and should have won by 2 or 3. And they mention the support of the Sunderland fans, also funny, at about the same time in the match they mentioned it the stream I was watching showed Sunderland fans leaving with 17 mins to go. No mention of the booing either.

And finally, it's not Pubey's fault, oh no, it's all down to the players. 3 wins in 23 is all the players fault.

It wasn't terrible as a lot of them found Benteke, but I do wish we'd whip a few more in rather than just keep floating them in so as the attacking player doesn't have to generate all the power and the defenders don't have half an hour to work out where it's landing.

I agree. Considering how dangerous his crosses can be when he whips them in (see Clark vs. Newcastle) it's strange that, when he gets the chance to really get one right, he opts for that floating thing.

The tactic all game with the crosses was to hit them deep/back stick for Benteke to square up.

To be fair it did work, but from open play when there's more likely to be space in the box for the player following in. From corners you want a bit of variety, and I can't help but feel Bannan would do better with more surprise in his delivery.
Title: Re: Sunderland v Aston Villa Post-Match Thread
Post by: Pete3206 on November 04, 2012, 12:29:47 AM
Yes, it's just a shame that all the crosses from Bannan were shit. Floating in the ball into the box like that makes it easier for opposition defences. A decent centre from Lowton and the Benteke tactic works perfectly. Bannan should have that pointed out to him.

Sorry Pete I think you are doing him a big disservice there. He tracked back and intercepted in our box 4-5 times in the game, which is something I was not expecting at all. It was the most disciplined performance I have seen from him by a distance, and the joy of him and Westwood was their constant availability for the ball, and then most often keeping it with their next pass and being in space to take it back if needed. Both were excellent. They really were today.

Again, Bannan was usually having to deliver on the angle, not the straight ball like Lowton, and hit Benteke time and time again. They were good passes that found their target.

Just a thought from the game: in football, any physique can be useful in its own way if you can work out how to use it to your advantage. Big muscles don't change George Elokobi into Patrick Vieira, just as being small won't work in Nathan Ellington's favour like it does Xavi's. Against Sunderland, in their own ways, I thought Bannan and Benteke showed how to do this - Bannan by using his low centre of gravity to shield the ball and change direction quickly, and Benteke with his obviously massive frame bullying his way almost through opponents (but fairly!), and also stretching his legs and neck to be first to every ball on the ground and in the air.

It's great to see, because a big part of a young player's development is when he starts to work out what he's been left with after he stops growing. For Bannan in particular this has been a problem, so it's good to see him learning, but it's not to be underestimated for Benteke either: Crouch, for example, never fully seemed to learn how to use his huge frame and ended up conceding free kicks and not scoring enough headers. It's a very good sign, I think, regarding these players' maturity.

Love it. Such a sweet victory. I'd absolutely love to see Sunderland get relegated this season.
Good to see Gabby score his first Prem goal in nearly a year. 2 in 2 games now and hopefully he kicks on because I think he and Benteke seem to be gelling.
Benteke is hitting form at the right time, and hopefully it'll carry through the December period as well.
Promising from Westwood. Perhaps he'll offer us something we've been lacking in midfield. We seemed to control the midfield better than normal so I'm hoping we've struck a better balance. Bannan needs to play this well every week too.

Good stuff though. I hope we kick on. Good to see us win a game and be pretty comfortable at it too.

I'm amazed Martin and others thought we didn't deserve to lose. Villa knocked the ball around like a Premier League side. They had pace, movement and fluidity in what they did.

We looked a one paced, huff and puff side in comparison. We look like we struggle to string a few passes together. Very poor.

Anyway , nice to see Lambert start with the right players . Ireland needs to play , our results are good with him in the team . Westwood looks really good.  Nice to see gabby score , now push on .  Benteke again causing problems, Guzan , Lowton and Vlaar look good. Proves Delph and Albrigton should be nowhere near starting.   I was absolutely over the moon yesterday with a grin all day , even thou second my heart was beating fast and loud  . Very happy with the win and Gabby getting a league goal. This midfield of ours looked good, creative, tough and tidy. Next weeks will test us of course.

Interesting that Sunderland are above us in the league but very unhappy with MON and we - worried about relegation- are shouting Lamberts name to the rooftops. Quite right, we are moving forward, trying to play footy and prepared to give him time.

Sunderlands goal attempt stats are apparently the worst in Europe and they are very poor, so happy or not this morning we have to be realistic.

Work in progress arn't we. But progress it is. And Martin didn't give us a wave, I think Sunderland will give him one goodbye,  that'll give me a sleepless night....

Last 11 games = 5 wins, 3 draws, 3 defeats , albeit that does include league cup games but does suggest that we are beginning to get some sort of form .

To be fair, apart from our goal, I think Sunderland carved out the better chances, which is reflected in the MOTD highlights. When you've only got a 10 minute slot, you're hardly going show a succession of corner kicks that come to nothing.
Fair enough but we did have 6 shots on target compared to their one.

Apart from the goal, MOTD showed the 2 Weinmenn shots. They missed the Ireland attempt didn't they? Glad they kept in the Clark tackle, that was superb.

Weimann looked pretty sharp though Barry Horne didn't rate him. Someone put up our record when he' been in the team, something like 6 starts - 5 wins 1 draw (don't hold me to that).

Could be Villa's very own Tim Bresnan.

Be interesting to see the Villa stats with Weimann and Ireland in the team this season.

For those who didn't see it but only saw the 12 seconds of MOTD coverage:

Guzan - 7
Lowton - 7
Bennett (Lichaj - 6) (Stevens)
Vlaar - 7
Clark - 8
Westwood - 8
Bannan - 7
Ireland - 7
Weimann - 7
Gabby - 7
Benteke - 7

That was my quick take based on what I saw in the second half, though I think in the first half, Benteke and Westwood played very well and Ireland was less good.
Clark surprised me, would have had him behind Baker and Herd but had a really good game for me.

I like Lowton and he looks good going forward though he needs to do it more but a pit concerned with some worrying lapses at the back, I think we'll struggle against Utd but may fare better against City and Arsenal as our full backs are up against it with Valencia, Nani and Young.

Westwood looks very composed and he's no world beater but he shows great promise at doing the simple things well unlike Delph.

Ireland looked better when pushed up near Benteke, helped link things well.

Sunderland looked at times like they were trying to walk the ball into the net, tippy tappy style. We used to do that.

this is quite funny off a Sunderland site

"We didn’t deserve to get beaten. yes we did

We probably should have won the game but the ball just didn’t drop for us today. bullshit

We’re not scoring goals, we’ve had people in and around the penalty area, but it just doesn’t seem to be happening for us. never, tell us something we dont know

I could not fault the players’ effort whatsoever. I think it was epitomised by a fantastic performance from Lee Cattermole.what the fuck? how thick are them fucking glasses?

It was as good a performance as I have seen from a player and he didn’t deserve to be on the losing side. speechless

We drove at Villa and tried everything but we were unable to wear them down.drove at them by sending the ball in one direction

We need to be resilient. It’s been tough going and we’ve found ourselves in the situation where we’re not getting goals. fuck off

You wouldn’t think we would have that problem with all of the attacking players we have in the team.we have no attacking players

We have to stick in at it and we’ll come back from this. fuck off

We have to remain strong and be resilient – we’re all in this together."no we arent sort it out yourselves

Willing but a bot one dimensional if you ask me. He hasn't got the pace to do the job asked of him but I'm not criticising after a win. thought Bannan was the best player on the pitch and was at the centre of everything that we did. Shout out for Clark also who I thought had a great game and spent most of it marking/dealing with the constant high-balls into fletcher.

Great last game for me to go to before flying back to Nigeria next weekend. I'm enjoying this weekend and will enjoy the rest of the week now.

Agreed with this, I am a Weimann booster but he was very much a runner yesterday and not much more. But boy did he run, he was just knackered by he time he was subbed. It is why incidentally he shot after the breakway move didnt get buried, he had literally run the pitch to get on the end of it.

With a bit of luck Weimann could have scored a couple against Swindon and had chances yesterday and against Norwich (in the 10 minutes he had on the pitch). I'm not convinced that out wide is the best position for him, but he's strong and fast and offers more of a threat than Albrighton.  Perhaps he tends to shoot too early and needs a goal to give him a bit more composure.

Weimann's movement and effort were very good, which is usual for him.  I think he's playing it a bit too safe with his shots which seem to find the keeper too easily.  If he takes a bit more of a chance and goes for the corners a bit, or curls them a bit, I think he'll start scoring.  Anyway it's good to have at least one player trying to have a pop from the edge of the box or just outside it.  We don;t try that nearly enough.

That Southampton game really irritates me. If they hadn't beaten us they would be so far adrift now (on either one or two points) that they would be virtually down already whereas we would have at least ten points going into this tough run.

Hmm, I didn't see the game, but from your descriptions it sounds like Weimann did a Holman job. But when out wide Brett doesn't seem to get into those goalscoring positions for himself like Andy did yesterday and against Swindon, suggesting his attacking instinct might give him the edge over Holman.

As an aside, is there any reason to shunt this thread away from Heroes discussion so quickly? If we have a game on Sat it's likely the match is going to be discussed fairly regularly until early the following week. Just a suggestion.

I have watched the whole game and was very impressed by Bannan and Westwood. Both had very good games.
Vlaar, Lowton (this kid's going to get better and better) and Benteke all played very well.

Westwood and bannan performed their roles very well. Not earth shattering, but protected the back four much better than kea and delph; used it well too. Barry cu out the Hollywood balls though played some progressive passes

The main concern for next week is left back I think. Lichaj even if fit, doesn't look good enough here to me. I really like Lowton tho, but I can see him being a bit exposed against utd wingers and movement. He gets caught out positionally a bit.

Ireland played very close to benteke second half, and it worked really well. Not sure it would be so effective at home tho.
