Winning and remaining in 17th place is a bit of a pisser, mind.

But now we're only two wins behind Arsenal in sixth.

Mons take on the game

"We didn’t deserve to get beaten.

We probably should have won the game but the ball just didn’t drop for us today.

We’re not scoring goals, we’ve had people in and around the penalty area, but it just doesn’t seem to be happening for us.

I could not fault the players’ effort whatsoever. I think it was epitomised by a fantastic performance from Lee Cattermole.

It was as good a performance as I have seen from a player and he didn’t deserve to be on the losing side.

We drove at Villa and tried everything but we were unable to wear them down.

We need to be resilient. It’s been tough going and we’ve found ourselves in the situation where we’re not getting goals.

You wouldn’t think we would have that problem with all of the attacking players we have in the team.

We have to stick in at it and we’ll come back from this.

We have to remain strong and be resilient – we’re all in this together."

Well you did deserve to lose Martin, had we been more clinical you'd have been savagely beaten.

Here's a sample of replies in a thread titled 'In a sentence, what's wrong?' on one of their messageboards:

Under managed and under motivated

We can't pass and we don't move.

No intelligent movement off the ball.

No plan B.

I'm not making that last one up!      It's uncanny.  If he can't even motivate anymore, he can't really do anything.

I've said a couple of times, he's looking like a busted flush. The one good thing he could do doesn't seem to work anymore and he has no idea what else to do.

That's more like it.  Really good performance today and we were worthy winners.  Ireland can be hit and miss, but not many other players spot the sort of opportunities he does.  Bannan played really well, as did Benteke, Vlaar and Gabby.  And O'Neill's effusing over that thug Cattermole sums up why I hate his approach to football.

Yup. As he scored. No wonder Gabby was in pain, that's the BBC article's headline photo, too.

I know it was a goal, but he still shoulda been carded. That's a career ending tackle that.

I can wear a player like Ireland being hit and miss.

Comes with the territory, creative but mercurial talents are often like that.  Except for the very best.
It's when your centre halves and other defenders are hit and miss, ike Dunne the last two years and like Vlaar this season that you can have problems (In fairness to Concrete, he has looked better these last few games).

I would have expected a few more assists off Ireland though, if I'm honest.

Maybe in some games he's trying to do too much or- like last season- he's been played too deep.

Would be good if our midfield was solid enough to say 'don't worry about anything else, just operate in the final third.'  At the moment we can't really do that though.
