Setting off now for VP. I think it will be a draw but can I make a plea to people on here that do not panic/slash wrists/abuse board if we lose. Last season we had 4 points from first two games and than.....it went belly up.

Indeed, we saw last week that Everton are a solid team this year and it will be no tragedy if we were to loose.
say it quietly but starting with two losses might not be he end of the world if it encourages Randy to find more money for transfers.

I'm afraid that will fall on deaf ears if we get anything but a win.

No Delph is a surprise! Bannan in for Holman isn't particularly surprising, though good. Fonz in for Ireland is interesting. Clear midfield diamond thing going on with Zog at the tip of it, Herd bustling around and KEA and Bannan keeping the ball.

But surprised by the team news to be honest. Ireland on the bench in particular. Looks like bannan left and CNZ right? Or could it be more of a 433 or diamond with CNZ more fwd / behind the strikers?

I guess we'll have to get used to constant team changes!!

What's the bench? Hope Ireland hasn't being behaving badly. Delighted for Fonz getting a chance. Gives him a chance to show the majority of people on here who don't rate him.

Yeh , my best guess would be:

Herd, KEA, bannan - CNZ - fonz, bent

??

Looks an attacking team, which should keep the ball pretty well.

I thought Delph and Holman were poor against West Ham, so not surprised they're both on the bench.  N'Zogbia was as well but I suppose we do need some attacking intent.

I think Herd will be interesting. Probably in because Lambert looked at the game Monday and realised that a midfield of even United's talent level couldn't do without that tenacity which Herd will bring to the team. Hopefully he can unsettle them in midfield - and get up Fellaini's nose a bit!

Already an improvement on the MON era.

I thought Delph would drop down and Bannan would come in but surprised to see Ireland drop down. About time we used a little more rotation.

I think Herd's really the one 'in for' Delph, but it's a change of shape as well so straight swaps are hard to say.

Swansea have shown today that you don't need big players to be a good PL team. They have had 71% possession in the second half and their current move is about 40 consecutive passes. They have nearly completed 500 passes in this game with 15 minutes to go.

Lambert has stressed possession and converting that possession into goals as Swansea have done. It will take a while and Everton will be tough. But we can do it, and Bent is a much better striker than anything Swansea have so we need to find a way of getting it to him, this game and throughout this season.

I think Herd might be in to compete with Fellani as well. Him and KEA sitting, Fonz and Zog off Bent with Bannan in behind where Ireland was would be my guess. Good for Lambert changing it round. They created very little last week, give others a go.

Totally. West Ham are more self-consciously anti-possession than Everton, who mix the physicality with passing and are just better, but the essentials of skill and hard work against physicality are ones I agree with there.

Just occurred to me that there are 5 home grown players in that line up. That's something to be proud of, but also a concern against a very experienced high quality Everton side.

I'm looking forward to the game, but there's a chance we're going to get a bit of a lesson here I reckon.

Herd is brilliant in the air, I'd imagine that's the reasoning behind this. I though Delph was our best player against West Ham. Still, Lambert knows more than I do.

Harsh on Delph to be dropped. Personally I'd have kept him in and left BB on the bench.

Still, good team. Fonzie has had a pretty good pre-season, so deserves a go. Important season for him. He's got the ability, he just needs to show more determination and a bit more umph. Quite fancy him to score today actually. With all the onus on Benty, Fonzie might find himself some space. He's a pretty good finisher too when he gets a sniff.

Ireland out does not surprise me. He was pretty poor. Started brightly but as per normal just disappeared out of the game. There was a lot of pressure on him to make things happen, to get up and support Bent but he did none of that. I can barely remember him making a run into the box, which is supposed to be the mans forte. I also think tactically, it's quite hard to find a place for Ireland. He has a position he likes and wants to float, but I just don't think he's flexible enough himself for the team. He's spoken out about having to play wide left or right, but you play where you're told. End of.

N'Zog owes us a big performance. He was dire last week. He's been piss-poor since he joined us, but the fact remains, he's arguably the one player we have capable of just creating something out of absolutely nothing. He could ghost through 4 players and spank a screamer, 25 yards in the top corner...or he could do naff all.

Awful. Generous of the commentator to make some excuses for Given. There's no excuse. Piss poor. This is far too easy for Everton. They're not loaded with spectacular players or anything but we really do lack players like Jag, Osman, Baines, and Fellaini. They've got some quality with Pienaar and Jelavic too. Hell we could do with someone like Phil Neville. He's a captain. Darren Bent isn't.

Cheque book time Randy. We spend now, or you risk relegation. Simple as. We're being outclassed.

Villa remind me of Finland. Playing ok but lapses of concentration in own end and no penetration in the other end brings destruction. So it looks as they're is playing ok with possession in easy areas etc but actually they're just shit.

Is it just me or is there a severe lack of wanting the ball and movement off the ball to get it in the midfield?

I honestly think a large part of our problem is that too many of the players are just not very good. We're in denial about the quality of some of them.

We can't expect to do much with this current team, we need improvements. I hope this is a wake up call pulling their finger out and get busy with 6 days of the transfer window remaining.

It's true. Of all our players coming through I don't rate any of them as potentially top 5 quality. Clark at a push may be the next Cahill, but that aside, at best we've got potentially mid-level Prem players coming through. That's being generous.

In all honesty I don't see Fonz making it in the top flight. I don't think Bannan will. Herd, through graft more than quality, will probably last in the prem, but he's lower-mid table standard.

I cannot fathom how Randy thinks we'll get by like we are.

You'd be forgiven forgetting Delfouneso is on the pitch. And he's not the only one.

The squad is just not good enough, plain and simple.

PL needs time to get things working the way he wants them to, but he's going to be constrained by working with what is, in all honesty, one of the worst squads in the top flight.

If anything sums up the piss poor way the club has been run for too long now, it is the fact that we spent all that money to end up with such a weak squad,

Yeah but what is there that he shouldn't have changed from last season? It's not as if we've lost some good habits we had.

The squad needs a large infusion of money, and very quickly. Lerner and Faulkner can pretend all they like that we are turning into Ajax relying on kids, but that is only going to end up in one place. A bad one.

It's just so obvious though. How can you expect a team made up by players who have fought relegation 2 seasons in a row to get any better? These players have contributed to those struggling seasons, its not just previous managers.

Now 3-0 down. An absolute  shambles. Just no words except SPEND SOME MONEY ON GOOD PLAYERS WE DESPERATELY NEED OTHERWISE WE WILL BE FIGHTING RELEGATION FOR A THIRD SEASON. THIS TEAM IS JUST NOT VERY GOOD. WE NEED IMPROVEMENTS, BIG IMPROVEMENTS.

Relying on the youngsters clearly is not an option, it's sad but they are not good enough. A lot of them have had more than a season in the squad and they haven't come on at all. You can add the odd youngster to a good squad, or bring in youngsters if they're outstanding and we have neither.

Six days of window to potentially save our season. It needs to happen now. If we get to jan in the mire, then we can't attract good players, and they'd need to settle immediately to save our bacon. A reasonable start last season essentially saved us from going down. We're starting badly this season. This does not look good.

We need 3-4 decent players. Finished articles. Players who've done the business in this league. Other clubs can see that, so why can't Randy? Makes me sick seeing O Neill basically given the license he had with us 4-5 years ago at a new club and he's going to have a side 15-20 points better off than we are come the end of the season. Makes me sick.

I've had enough for today.

I want to cry I think!

We look awful.  I understand why people are saying don't panic but we aren't just bad, we are atrocious.  135 minutes without creating a single chance on goal.  I have never seen less urgency in my life and neither Delfoneuso or N'Zogbia can trap a football.  30% possession and our first shot came in first half injury time from 30 yards.

Also Jelavic's goal shows why Clark is not the stunning centre half people hope he is.  Caught ball watching from the most basic piece of movement.

I remember looking at a team sheet from Sir Graham's 2nd reign a while ago and being shocked by how bad the team was.  I think we will look back with similar feelings on this team because I'm afraid most of these players are playing on the biggest stage they ever will.

While Lambert may not be at fault for the paucity of the squad, he is surely at fault for the fact that the players look slow and unfit, not to mention tactically clueless. To me this is as bad as ,if not worse than, the Swansea game last season.  We couldn't be less potent going forward if we had Mcleish and his surrender tactics on display.  If you are going to play a possession game you need players who are comfortable on the ball and full of movement.  We don't have them. And anyone who thinks Clark is going to make a top class CB is in cloud cuckoo land.

Totally agree. Lambert is a decent manager but has been given basically no money (where was the 20 odd million kitty? - we have probably spent net £5m and our wages are probably lower this season). The players we have are simply not good enough and some are performing nowhere near their ability (i include nzogbia, ireland and bent in particular here but, certainly with the first 2, i cant see it getting any better either).

We can all blame o neill, houllier and mcleish but the man who should be blamed most for this clubs sorry state is mr randy lerner.
He should just sell up to fucking anyone. He clearly doesn't give two shits. But oh hang on, we can all be proud that our wage bill is ok enough to compete in Europe!! The closest were going to get to Europe is a trip to Wales to play Cardiff next year

Trying to take a level headed approach to this. It was always going to take a while and we've been punished by some strong experienced players.

We haven't been able to play much of the football we saw in pre season. The intensity of the game has been a real shock to many of our players.

KEA is well behind the pace. Ideally we'd give him a chance to adjust, but we just don't have any players to fit in there. I actually think that fonz has done ok, without lpoking like he's necessarily going to be good enough.

Let's just try and get some pride back second half.

And then we desperately need at least one quality, proven central midfielder. I've said that for months. We also need a left back although baker has done ok.

Pretty depressing stuff. Hard to see us avoiding another shitty season really at the moment. why do we bother?

N'Zogbia is utterly clueless.

When he puts in the effort to get into a decent position, he just stops, he doesn't know what to do with the ball.

I said earlier somewhere that I am stunned he has made it this far as a footballer. Whoever that bloke was at Wigan is dead.

Karim El Ahmadi OFF Bannan OFF Ireland ON Weimann ON

How will that work? They've looked like our only two players capable of trapping a football.

Bannan has been woeful. Completely useless.

Indeed, almost as bad as playing with 10 men I'd say.  Same with Nzogbia.

Bannan has been the only one actually trying to make himself available for the ball. The lack of movement off it is shocking.

He's looked lost to me Monty, like a boy playing for his Dad's team.  I've been rooting for him since he broke through due to his ability on the ball but he hasn't improved in 3 years and he's too easily nullified against a team of grown ups.

There's a dreadful lack of quality in there.

Shay Given (G)

Yes we are shite.  Flat.  Looking around for a pass.  Static.  Nervous and clumsy.  Plainly incompetent and best of all - bottom of the league.

But look on the bright side - at least Lambert and Lerner will realise this now - a couple more unchallenged goals for the Toffees and the budget will suddenly go up.

So join with me looking on the bright side - every goal equals £5 million.

Come on Everton!

Bannan has at least made himself available.  Nobody else is moving.  The balls keeps on coming to Baker who just stands on it looking around before either lumping it towards Bent or playing El-Ahmadi or Bannan into trouble.

N'Zogbia has ran out of excuses, he has Hexagonal feet, the ball just shoots off him.  Lambert cannot do much about this lot but he needs to find some players on the cheap, like Laudrup has.

And yet there are people who criticize others for not being positive and optimistic!!!

We are shit and going down and anybody who thinks anything else needs to take the tinted specs off.  This is an awful Villa side, look at the line up ffs!!  A mixture of very average youth players that will never make it and a few over paid, over rated older pros who couldn't give a fuck.  Oh and Nathan (League 1 player at best) Delfouneso.

Rubbish.

Nobody has said we've been anything but poor so far this season.

Where people differ is in their opinion that one (or two) games is not enough to start moaning at the manager.

The problem is obviously players. Not enough of them, and the ones we have got are nowhere near good enough.

I don't know anyone who thinks anything other than it being a problem with the players as opposed to the manager.  How can Lambert do his job when the current squad is awful and we have to sell to buy?  Especially when the players we need to move on are so shockingly bad that no one wants to buy them!

We need 30 million spent on 3 or 4 players to have a CHANCE of staying in the Prem.  Sadly I can't see Randy spending 3 million never mind 30.  We are as good as down, and will probably finish botttom.  1 win in 20?  Fucking disgrace.

Clark got himself caught sleeping AGAIN.  He is no centre half, he will either develop into a holding midfielder or go nowhere.  I rate Baker as a much better defender.  Everton can essentially score as many as they want to score now.

We look like a side thats just got promoted and are completely surprised by hat we've found. I guess that might not be surprising given that probably only bent, CNZ and given have any real premier league pedigree

But I think thing I'm most worried about is that it's not just confidence, or shape, or physicality. Generally we just don't look that good.

Bent had been a pile of crap today. Needs to recover from injury layoff. But it is to an extent the same old problem. He's not a very good 'footballer'.

Oh bloody hell. Bad to worse. Down to the last four defenders that have any chance o playing.

I'd bring Warnock & Dunne back for the next game.

id agree but doubt it will happen as he's trying to force them out

I'd guess that's what holman does then... very good play to create the chance.

Bent could've done better with the follow up.

Is there any point of Holman? But Karim and Ron look tidy

I just don't see what Holman "does" - he contributed zero last week and I'd forgotten he'd actually been brought on here.
I had high hopes with him being mentioned in the Jimmy Milner bracket but reminds me more of Albrighton but in the middle. Ron will be a ledge here and Karim will probably be sold too Arsenal for £20 million next summer.
Might have to eat my words, that was a lovely reverse slide pass to Weimann....unlucky lads.

I'd start Baker and Vlaar in the middle.

Baker has done very well again today. He looks way more solid there than Clark does.

I don't agree dunne should play. He's injured.

Unlucky for weimann there.

Holman has shown glimpses second half I think. And I think baker has done well.

Still thoroughly outplayed overall of course but I'm trying to take some positives

I agree with that. I'd put Warnock at LB in a heartbeat too.
