Not got his own thread yet and as it seems as close as it could be, with Koeman and their director saying he wants to come, and the player himself saying it is a dream move, he deserves his own spot on the boards......
PL seems to be getting some decent value, signings we have bemoaned our club not making for a long time. Really looking forward to the season....
Some of this passion would be great.

That Youtube clip is amazing... love it!

He might find the atmosphere at Villa Park a bit....underwhelming.

Roncrete

He's fucking mental.
-
Yeaaah...his name is Vlaar
Yeaaah...he's a fuckin star
Yeaaah...we all love Villa
We do Ron Ron Ron, We do Ron Ron
-
He's fucking mental.
so was alpay
-
Looks like we finally have a manager who can find a bit of value abroad. Looks to be signing some strong characters as well, which I feel we've lacked for years, and can't hurt.
-
Roncrete
Does what he says on the tin.
-
I've got a hazy memory of The KLF doing a song about a man made of concrete or cement. Been on Youtube to have a look but there are too many to listen to.
I'm sure some H&V'ers will know what I'm waffling about and hopefully if he signs we'll be able to adapt said song.
-
I love that a Rotterdam team play happy hardcore in the stadium!
-
So did Concrete Ron really go into a burger king, ask for a big mac, and get one
-
Concrete Ron's so hard he felt his pregnant wife's baby kicking and kicked it back.
-
Concrete Ron is allowed to talk about Fight Club.
-
Concrete Ron takes the 'the' out of 'Psychotherapist'.
-
He's fucking mental.
so was alpay
Alpay was a good defender, shame he was a prick.
-
Concrete Ron is the only person in the world James Milner is scared of.
-
He should wear the armband
-
So have we sorted how his name is pronounced? I like concrete Ron myself
-
What position is he going to play?
-
What position is he going to play?
Concrete Ron is joining to ensure that the defence is reinforced for this season
-
Signings like this will really help us to cement a solid foundation. Something to build on I hope.
-
What position is he going to play?
Concrete Ron is joining to ensure that the defence is reinforced for this season
So he's precast Concrete Ron.
-
What position is he going to play?
I see Ron as a fleet-footed playmaker. A bit like David Silva.
-
Concrete Ron doesn't do push ups, he just pushes the Earth down.

According to the Meaning Evil, PL's been chatting.
“I spoke to the guy and he’s a really top bloke and a very good player. We’ll see what happens. I just had a chat with the guy, that’s all it was.
“I honestly don’t know if anyone else is interested in him. I had a chat with him the other day and he was great, everything’s fine.
“I know what type of character he is and we’ll need to see what happens.
“I’ll have a chat with the people here.
“The main thing was having a chat with the lad himself to see how he feels. I don’t know if he’ll be coming out here, I’ve only just had a chat with him.
“I’ve not put any ground rules down, nothing at all, it was just a chat.”

The Hutton bit was more interesting than what he had to say about Concrete Ron.

So we could see a prefab sprout?
Lets hope he concentrates on football more than cars or girls.

Indeed.

"Partridge Lands at Villa"
-
Concrete Ron sounds like a character that is spoken about but never seen in something like Fools And Horses or Porridge. Maybe a H&V competition to spot the first shirt with Concrete Ron on the back?
-
Concrete Ron's tears can cure cancer.
Too bad he has never cried.
Ever.
-
I like Lambert he's honest. Owen won't happen and Hutton's out..Straight talking
-
A cobra once bit Concrete Ron's leg.
After 5 days of excruciating pain, the cobra died.
-
Concrete Ron creates rocks so heavy even he can't lift them. Then he lifts them.
-
Most men have one testicle bigger than the other.
With Concrete Ron, EACH testicle is bigger than the other.
-
we've need a player and personality like this down at VP so very badly. Someone who gives absolutely everything for the cause. Martin Laursen was simply magnificent and in much the same way and gave us all so much confidence. Ironically it was also against Ajax that he scored that goal that lifted the roof of the stadium in the Europa. We need a bit of that down there. A new leader to get everyone going again.
Concrete Ron is so hard that nails quiver

There used to be a street named after Concrete Ron, but it was changed because nobody crosses Concrete Ron and lives.
Concrete Ron is the reason Wally is hiding.

Concrete Ron is the reason Wally is hiding.
But Concrete Ron will find him.

Concrete Ron could find Lord Lucan. And Shergar. And the ball from Big John's penalty at Newcastle.

Concrete Ron doesn't flush the toilet.
He scares the shit out of it.

Concrete Ron could end up in one of those tag wrestling situations when it is two versus one (if your not into wrestlimg think Blockbusters) and deal with Mick Harford and Noel Blake no problem. Then pick up Robert Hopkins to use to wipe the sweat off his brow.

Concrete Ron can touch MC Hammer
-
Just last week Ron murdered a rock, injured a stone and hospitalised a brick. He's so mean, he makes medicine sick.
-
Most people can piss their name in snow, Concrete Ron can piss his name in concrete
-
The Hutton bit was more interesting than what he had to say about Concrete Ron.
I read that as "I told Alan he is shit and had no future at the club. He understood and is looking for a new club"
-
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is based on a true story.
Concrete Ron once swallowed a turtle whole.
When he crapped it out, it was six feet tall and had learned Karate.
-
Concrete Ron doesn't visit places. Places visit him.
Concrete Ron can change the tire on a car, while it's moving.
-
He's fucking mental.
He certainly is.
It's the kind of mental that supporters can identify with.
He seems to be more a 'turning up with his boots in a brown paper bag/keeps chickens in the living room' type of nutcase than a 'syrrup on his head, 15 ailing grandmothers' fruitcake.
It's the kind of diminished responsibility the club needs.

The lyrics are "rockman he's just made of bricks" from Justified & ancient-not the Tammy Wynett version.

I read that as "I told Alan he is shit and had no future at the club. He understood and is looking for a new club"
I don't think Hutton will kick another ball for Villa. I think Lambert knows he is shit and wants rid.
-
The Hutton bit was more interesting than what he had to say about Concrete Ron.
“This is just the squad I’ve decided to go with,” said Lambert

#Villa boss Paul Lambert says he's had talks with Feyenoord defender Ron Vlaar but doesn't know if he'll be joining the club yet
Mat Kendrick @MatKendrick
Ron Vlaar still some way off being a done deal.

Another few I've come up with...
Concrete Ron is so alert that suprise is taken by Concrete Ron.
After agreeing to join Aston Villa, Concrete Ron has decided to punch the Jetstream into the north sea.
The sun always shines on Concrete Ron.
Concrete Ron is what gives the Higgs Boson it's mass.

That's a shame. I was hoping he would at least be there for the game in Portland where he would surely have cemented his place.

I think we need to get rid of them all anyway. Collins and Warnock have been awful for two seasons and Hutton is one of the worst players I've seen in the claret and blue.
- Collins for Vlaar
- Hutton for Howton
- Warnock for ?

Normal as in when was the last time that happened?
I mean normal service in a "a back to the reality" context, that transfers take time to work out. With the last two signings the rumours became reality very quickly, with that kind of speed you get spoiled. A needless moment of frustration by myself, because I have been used to protracted transfers over the last couple of off seasons. The club is really pulling it out of the bag this summer, we seem to acting decisively and swiftly, they need to be commended for that.

Ah, right. I thought you meant waiting until we'd got rid of one player before bringing in another. You're right- we did get spoiled by the speed of the last two signings (and Holman before that).
-
I doubt that this is all that different than the Lowton or El Ahmadi transfers actually, just that the lucky break of that photo being taken put it out there earlier. Had it not been for that, I'd imagine the press would not have got wind of it until much nearer the conclusion, as they did with the last two deals.

It probably makes a bit of difference as well that everyone's in the US. I wonder who's in charge of Villa Park this week?

Schmoozing potential sponsors etc. I would imagine. Plus being within easy reach of PL makes it a bit easier to formulate plans on signings and that.

James Milners awesomeness. A great thread.
If we could get 1 player this summer, I would love it to be Milner back. Alongside KEA in the centre of the park he would be great. Still gutted he is a bit part right winger at Citeh.

Seems so long ago now, does the Milner thread.

I wonder if it still exists as I think it was on the old board?

Much as these jokes on this thread are appreciated, what concerns me is the deal appearing in limbo. To me, It looks very much a sell to buy situation with little cash for PL to spend. I'm not that impressed with the dealings thus far - after all, Brett Holman was a AM signing, leaving only two deals completed (I'm not counting Guzan as he was on the books last season). Cuellar has departed, it's unknown on Stan's situation, Heskey released (although no great loss) so the squad numbers still look thin. A new centre back and striker are a must - the current look of our defence doesn't fill me with confidence. Lerner still has a lot to answer for on his transfer policy.

This and Karim El Ahmadi, Rock the casbah
-
Milner back - I'd be in heaven!
And he's just the sort of player who, playing alongside El Ahmadi, would enable us to play a 4-4-2 and allow for the much speculated on Carroll/Bent partnership.
Given (with Guzan pushing hard)
Lowton/Lichaj
Clark
Concrete Ron
New LB (Let's say Bertrand from Chelsea)
Holman
El Ahmadi
Milner
N'Zogbia (after being told to work harder for the team)
Bent
Carroll
In truth though, I doubt funds would stretch to Milner AND Carroll.
-
Milner isn't coming back. Bores me every transfer window....

Possibly, or the deal may just be on hold until after the American tour. I'm still in relaxed mode myself.
-
After his comments following the story leaking, I'd be very surprised if we don't sign him. In fact, I'd say the only reason it won't happen is if we decide to go for someone else instead.
-
According to SSN, a move to Villa is a 'dream move' (http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/12691/7905318/Vlaar-wants-dream-move).

Concrete Ron is R M C Ready mixed Concrete, We will have to keep our eye on

Fugsake...Milner isn't even that good. Let him be a workhorse winger on the bench half the time for twice the money.

Help me Ron Vlaar,
Help, help me Ron Vlaar
-
He certainly looks mortal now he's at Man City. I wonder how he'll feel when he remembers how much he was appreciated at Villa.
-
Doubt he cares. Trophies, money, right wing and the England team. As opposed to no trophies, less money, centre midfield and the England squad at Villa.
If I was him I'd do exactly the same. Although I imagine once his appearances become even more limited he'll drop back down a level and be a star again.
-

Apparently from what I've heard he often talks to people about us and has a genuine feeling for AVFC.

From what I was told, he never even wanted to leave. MON engineered it to bring funds into the club to allow him to pursue his targets (like McGeady). Also heard that Milner was in the middle of a very expensive refurbishment of his house and with a young family, had no plans to go anywhere.
Something else we have to thank MON for.
-
I wouldn't believe everything you hear, young family?
-
In that case he made a wise move. Get the cash whilst you can and look after your family.Very wise move.
-
Don't think he has kids, or didn't two years ago...And I'd be inclined to think O'Neill wanted him to stay but when Milner heard about City's approach that was it.

I find that hard to believe. At the time it seemed like the prospect of both trophies and ££££ were huge factors. He was the single biggest loss to the club since Yorke (only we actually replaced Yorke by investing in Dublin and Merson).

Come on Villa sort it out and get him signed.
-
Another consequence of having a fan blow the secrecy of the deal. If it was all being done behind the scenes as Villa like to do it wouldn't put so much pressure on getting things done. That said the player has made his feelings known and I'm sure that it will all get sorted out soon.

Its always good when the sellor becomes twitchy.
-
seems like we have to sell players before we can bring vlaar in.
-
I'm sure Lambert made it known we were going on tour
-
Its fair comment by Feyenoord. They want to know which team picture to publish and whether its worth playing him their pre-season friendlies.
-
Also heard that Milner was in the middle of a very expensive refurbishment of his house and with a young family, had no plans to go anywhere.

Milners house was only half a mile down the road from me. A modern property with a granny flat attached which he apparently turned into a couple of games rooms. The whole site was rebuilt from scratch by the previous owner approx 8/9 years. I never saw any major work going on there when Milner was living there. Two days after his move to Man City was confirmed, three large removal vans turned up. No `For Sale` board ever went up, not that they usually do with such property sales. For a time it seemed completely empty, but in recent months I've seen a 4W drive parked up there.
I went past it yesterday, the garden at the side still has two sets of portable goal posts complete with nets which he seems to have left behind.

I think we got a bit carried away last weekend with Concrete Ron. Had he not been spotted during the stadium tour, we'd be none the wiser, the deal could have gone ahead the first week of August and we'd all be saying 'wow wasn't that quick', 'I like the way we're going about our business' etc.
-
From what I was told, he never even wanted to leave. MON engineered it to bring funds into the club to allow him to pursue his targets (like McGeady). Also heard that Milner was in the middle of a very expensive refurbishment of his house and with a young family, had no plans to go anywhere.
Something else we have to thank MON for.
Basically, your informant was wrong on each point then!
-
Well, it was a few people who had said very similar things with me trying to remember things and piece them back together. I still believe the bit about MON engineering it to try and get some money to sign his targets with Milner not being so enthusiastic to leave as some would believe. As such, its hard to see people lumping Milner in with real mercenaries like Downing.

Another consequence of having a fan blow the secrecy of the deal. If it was all being done behind the scenes as Villa like to do it wouldn't put so much pressure on getting things done. That said the player has made his feelings known and I'm sure that it will all get sorted out soon.
It isn't anything to do with that, though. It is Feyenoord grumbling about how long it's taking, not a fan. They'll have known the state of affairs regardless of someone snapping Vlaar.

It makes it a lot more awkward for the Feyenoord now that everyone knows about this. Their fans will be very disappointed that their club have allowed their captain to leave. Now they are having to play some damage control. There is a consequence to this being "found out" so to speak so now they want the deal settled quickly so they can move on. Had everything been kept under wraps it would have been one of those 48 hour deals where all the behind the scenes stuff has been done already and fans only found when essentially it is done and dusted.
And what if, like OGS, this doesn't happen? We all thought Solskjaer was coming based on the things he said. Villa said all along that they were just looking at options. It will difficult for Feyenoord and their fans to welcome the player back because the player has proclaimed his desire to leave and inevitably there will be amongst us with daggers for the club/Faulkner because he didn't complete the deal.
-
You don't get to the point of showing a player around your ground if you're just looking at options, that's pretty much a deal that's quite a way down the line. As for Feyenoord fans, I can imagine their frustration but reading the fans forum link just after he was spotted at Villa it was pretty much everyone saying that he deserved his move and that they'll get good money. And, to be fair its only been a week.
-
I like other clubs getting pissed off at our transfer dealings.
It shows we're doing things on our terms, and we'll probably get the best deal as a result, something that hasn't been the case for some time.
-
I dont think we should be pissing Feyenoord around. If we've courted their player and have now left it hanging with no dialogue it's a bit harsh and not worthy of us to be honest.
I really hope this isnt what's happened and if it is that we sort it out sharpish.
-
Fuck 'em, and that cheating bastard Koeman.

Except it wouldn't have avtually been a 48 hours deal would it? In fact I'd be amazed if any deal ever started and concluded that quickly any more.
I really don't think it is anything to do with the deal being found out - they'd probably want the uncertainty settled in any case, it must be unsettling, you can understand that.
We'd probably know about it anyway, even without the pics. Lots of deals get leaked to the press in any case, they do get some of them right. If knowledge of his presence here was going to cause problems, I doubt Lambert would have shown him the ground while a tour party was going around.
There's no reason for anyone to stick the boot into the CEO on this, if we really wanted him or were concerned it would fall through, we'd do something about it, but likewise, there's no reason to see the fan in question having done anything wrong or blown anything, either.

Perhaps we've made them fully aware of the situation, we've spoken to them / the player & shown him round VP. In the meantime the picture of him at VP has been leaked & Feyenoord / the player have made comments regarding 'dream move', 'he wants to got', release clause etc. What have we said? Nothing.
In the meantime we've gone to the US for 2 weeks, didn't Kendrick state before we left that there would be no more deals until we came back from the US?
Perhaps he's one of many options, we may have to sell before we buy, the player may have asked for time to consider?
Lerner & Faulkner have, to date, always done things in the right manner, sometimes we've been critical of them for doing so but I see no reason to suspect they are doing anything wrong.
Keoman can do one.

I am sure there is plenty of dialogue, just not the dialogue Feyenoord want to hear at the moment.

I agree with Paulie. These Dutch slags are far too eager to see the colour of our money.

When in Amsterdam, never buy from the first window you look in.

Does anyone think that this would be a big deal if Vlaar hadn't gone on record about being at Villa Park and talking about a dream move, etc as soon as he got back to Holland?

That's not what I said. Deals take much longer now than in the past with so many vested parties to appease. The 48 hour reference related to the first time as fans we find out to conclusion. Look at the Matt Lowton deal as an example. When things are kept under wraps until the last possible moments they done with least fuss and consternation as opposed to what we have now with this possible transfer. Because it has become public knowledge on the eve of our tour there is already a perception that as a club we are messing Feyenoord around. Had nobody discovered this, we could have concluded the deal upon our return and as fans we'd only have realised this was happening at the very end. Instead we have a player that has made his feelings known and his club that are pissed off.

Vlaar - Villa move off for now
Defender focusing on Feyenoord following meeting with Lambert
Ron Vlaar says any possible transfer to Aston Villa is 'off for now' and the defender plans to focus on his current club Feyenoord.
The Netherlands international travelled to England a week ago to hold talks with Villa manager Paul Lambert regarding a possible move to the Premier League.
Vlaar subsequently admitted it would be a 'dream come true' to join Villa, but Feyenoord have not received any contact since the player's meeting with Lambert.
The Dutch club have been critical of Villa over the weekend and coach Ronald Koeman had set a deadline of Monday for their English counterparts to make a decision regarding Vlaar.
Koeman also suggested that he thought the centre-half would be leaving De Kuip, but Vlaar now appears resigned to staying with Feyenoord.
"Feyenoord is in my heart and I have been through a lot here," Vlaar told RTV Rijnmond.
"I think the chance I will move to Aston Villa is not so big anymore.
"I don't want to be kept on a leash, so a transfer is off for now."

-
I guess we are not prepared to pay the price Koeman is after and gap is too big.
-
However this deal ends up, i've seen and heard enough from Lambert that he'll make some well thought out decisions. The team are playing the right way and he's purchased some very solid players.
-
Has it failed to set?
-
Not enough concrete and too much sand so far.
-
I'm pretty sure it will happen, the guy has said himself that its a dream move, we do our business in the correct manner so he needs to be patient.
-
Bloody hell.
-
I blame Hilts.
;-)
-
It might be we are trying to get plan A and Vlaar is plan B or even C.
-
This is the typical story of a protracted transfer saga. It gets out, the player flutters his eyelashes at the prospective club, it then goes quiet, player pledges to focus on current club and then lastly, in most cases the player moves.
-

That's the point I was trying to make though. It's only protracted because it was discovered before it was meant to be discovered. Had that photo never been taken then we as fans might only have found out about it after the tour where the discussions could resume between the various parties. As it is, a photo was taken, just like Randy's plane in Norway and is is being discussed openly. Given the fact that on top of all of that Villa are away on a tour for 10 days it is always going to seem protracted because they are not going to address it. Things have been said, and people are getting pissed off. The player is in an awkward position too. Apparently Feyenoord is in his heart yet moving to us would be a dream. I'm sure that isn't sitting well with the fans there.
-

Koeman said yesterday that the clause in vlaars contract set the fee at £3.2m so i cant see that being a problem- i really hope this deal goes through.

Fugsake...Milner isn't even that good. Let him be a workhorse winger on the bench half the time for twice the money.
Agree - love the bloke and was a decent player but where folk liken him to a deity i have never got to be honest
He was getting better and better every game he played in central midfield tho. Just look back to the second half of 09/10, he was carrying us at times, just look to Wigan away.
And that we've been crap in central midfield ever since, it's been a massive weak point in our team.

You've given me a terrific memory of the Wigan away game, where we were holding the lead late in the game and under a fair bit of pressure from them. So Milner gets the ball and embarks on what must've been a 70 yard run; relieving all pressure.
I'm not quite sure why I remember that one particular moment so well, but it was bloody ace.
-
This is just the same as us telling Liverpool to do one if they didn't sign Barry before that europe game we had a few summers back.
They didn't, Barry played against FH Hjawhateverthefcuktheywerecalled and he played out the season with us.
Be interesting to see what the alternative centre back targets are. I assume we're after some as I can't stomach another season of Collins-Dunne tbh.

Whatever has or hasn't been said to Feyenoord, after Koeman's words there's likely to be dialogue. One way or another. So, expect something 'concrete(eh? eh?) this week.
-

Well tht figure is no brainer. FFS tht s much less than we paid for Harewood and I am sure Ron will score more goals!
-
The sidewalks in the street
The concrete and the clay beneath my feet
Begins to crumble
I still think we will sign him if PL wants it badly enough.
-
Villa clearly stated that they're going to be holding off any business until they get back from the States. Feyenoord needs to practice some patience, what's the rush? It's almost more disrespectful to force a cash move than to prolong it and make sure everything is absolutely right. It makes me angry that Koeman came out and gave us an ultimatum, who do you think you are?
-
sky sports news saying the deal is off! Vlaar quoted as saying "i will not be kept on a leash"
-
It's all off according to the Express:
ANGRY Holland international Ron Vlaar has pulled out of a £3.2million move to Aston Villa and accused the club of messing him about.
Vlaar met new Villa manager Paul Lambert in Birmingham a week ago for talks, but claims he has heard nothing since.
Feyenoord manager Ronald Koeman had demanded Villa get on with the deal because he has a Champions League qualifying game coming up and needed to know for sure if one of his top players was staying or not. But yesterday Vlaar pulled the plug himself. He had already been shown around Villa Park and believed it was all a done deal.
“The chance that I will now sign for Aston Villa is almost zero. I don’t like to be messed about. You can write down that this transfer is now off,” said Vlaar, 26.
He is one of the few Dutch players who did well at Euro 2012.
He is rated at more than £8m on the open market, but a clause in his contract makes him available for £3.2m.
The chance that I will now sign for Aston Villa is almost zero. I don’t like to be messed about
Ron Vlaar
His current wages are about £15,000 a week and he could have expected to double that at Villa and still be within their salary structure.
Feyenoord managing director Eric Gudde also slammed Villa.
“The transfer of Ron Vlaar to Aston Villa is definitely off,” said Gudde.
“The way he has been treated is not very good.
“Vlaar is a player of big calibre and we will be very happy to keep him.”
-
That's all very disappointing. We must have other targets. Here's hoping we didn't mess him about because we had to shift players first. It'll be hard to bring in players of that calibre if we have to shift the likes off Collins and Warnock first.
-
Bollocks.
-
That does not sound good.
-
Sigh. Just when everything seemed to be going swimmingly, another PR breakdown.
-
We've really fucked up on that one, let's just hope he was a plan B.
-
sounds like a Dutch international...rocking the boat, making demands and stomping off in a hissy fit.
-
Well, he's no Chuck Norris.
But I'm very disappointed by this.
The club needs to clarify what happened sharpish I'd say.
-
Disappointed and our Club does not appear to come out of this very well.
-
Disappointed and our Club does not appear to come out of this very well.
Agreed. To get a dutch international for around 3m would have been great “business” regardless of the effects on the pitch. I am struggling to see why we have not gone through with this deal when everything seemed to be in place.
-
Two weeks ago we hadn't heard of him; now he's a great loss. Unless I've missed something, all the running in this transfer seems to have come from Feyenoord - we've not said we were signing him or in negotiations so before condemning the Villa let's hear our side of whatever the story is.
-
In terms of this player in particular, I'm not massively arsed myself.
My main concern wasn't getting Vlaar in (I've not really seen that much of him, anyway), it was getting shot of the Collins - Dunne partnership, which I don't fancy watching for another season.
I'm pretty sure Lambert will do something about that.
I do feel a little perturbed that we're looking a bit iffy over the way we've handled this, though. Surely if we'd said "nothing will happen till after our US tour", Feyenoord and the player wouldn't be getting their arse in their hands, would they?
To be honest, though, that's a tiny, weeny bit perturbed at most. The sun's here for the week, it has finally stopped raining for a prolonged period, and football seems ages away still.

More than likely but we don't know for sure. As I said, it does seem odd that Feyenoord appear to be driving this deal more than we are.

Yeah great, the sun's out. Just when we need to bat all day to save a test match. Excellent timing Mother Nature.

True, maybe we're better of not bringing in someone who might potentially try and rock the boat.

Or when you fly a potential manager all the way to England on your private jet.
-
There does seem a few fishy elements to this which is why I'd like to hear our side of it soon.
I agree Feyenoord seem overly keen to get this done but is that just because they have Champions League qualifiers coming up and have to get a replacement in asap? I think that would be fair enough.
I really hope what his agent said about our board stopping the deal at the last minute due to having to sell somebody first is inaccurate because that is a worrying sign.

Okay, well even if it did I'm certain we'd entered what you'd call 'early' negotiations with him.
-
A few weeks ago it was a "dream move". Now he's rocking the boat before he's even in it. A trouble maker by the sounds of it.
-
Two points. One, we have never made a formal offer for the player ,irrespective of early intermediate or advanced talks. Secondly our underlying financial position has not changed. Why is it a surprise that we have to move on some of the high earners before bringing other players in? Nothing the board or PL has said indicates anything other than a few bargain signings and maybe a loan coming in and to reduce the overall wage bill , players on unsustainably high wages leaving.
-
I was hopeful on signing him purely because an english version would probably cost 3 times the cost.
-
We've added 3 players to the wage bill since Lambert took over so maybe it's a case of getting another player or two off the payroll before we commit to a 4th. I know we've let Carlos and Heskey go since then but that might not be enough.

Also stopped paying Beye off too.

I forgot about him.
If the wage bill is the reason for the delay, it would make sense. Holman and El Ahamdi (however you spell him) must be on a fair whack considering they've left behind Champions League football.

spot on
-
I don't care about the politics, I just wanted us to sign a player called concrete Ron who screams at fans down microphones....I was really looking forward to getting a concrete Ron t-shirt.
-
Seems very hot and cold. One minute it's the dream move. Next he's throwing his toys out the pram saying he's being messed about. All the noise is coming from their end. Wasn't lambert saying in an interview before he left for America that all it was at this stage was talking?
I was under the impression the clubs line was nothing will be concluded until after we returned from America. Maybe the player is trying to edge his bets. rather than state villa is the only club for him, by saying he's not going to be messed about he is giving other clubs the chance to take up the buy out clause, if others are interested. He could also be back tracking a little incase the "dream move" Doesn't pull off and he has to stay where he is for another season.
If he comes to villa, great. I think he'll be a good addition. If not, next please.
-
If that is his attitude then he can feck off. These Dutch players are very talented but boy they seem to have ego / attitutdes to go with their talent
-
There will be a phone call when we return asking him if he still wants to double his salary, which he will accept of course.
He will still be a Villa player next season I think
-
Depends what was said when he was at B6. The USA trip was known so surely he was told nothing would develop before they came back, unless our worthy management team failed to tell the guy they were off to the States.
At £3.2m he could be a steal if he's any good, but if he is, the Villa may find he's gone elsewhere while they've been away.
-
When do we come back from USA?

In other words, we're trying to do it on the cheap. There's only one direction that'll lead us to, and it ain't the top 6 or even top 10. Lerner needs to go, despite him appointing PL the underlying problem is still there. We need a strong leader not someone who stays most of his time on the other side of the Atlantic and can't be arsed to tell us his intentions for the club. The truth is half of the squad simply isn't good enough and needs replacing, and, to do that, takes big bucks.

This story all came about because someone managed to get a photo of him and Lambert talking and then it's all over the press.
The photo has basically forced the issue. Lambert hasn't come out and said he definitely wants to sign him. All the talk has come from Ron and Feyenoord.
If the price stated is accurate, it does seem like a decent price for a Dutch international. However, I don't like all this ultimatum talk that they are coming out with.
-
He's only saying what Milner said to Man City before they signed him. That's confusing though, because Jimmy isn't 'one of these Dutch players with their big egos'.
-
Aren't they doing pretty much what we did with Racist FC and Fat Baz? Sign him by X date or feck off?
And in fairness I can understand both club and player doing it. If, and it is an if, we have left them both in limbo why shouldn't they want to know where they stand as the season gets ever closer? I'm sure Feyenoord would like to know if their captain will be there at the start of the season and Vlaar would like to know if he is moving to another country (and potentially moving his family, no idea if he has one or not).
-
Fair enough. Don't blame Vlaar for saying what he said. I'd do exactly the same. Based on his comments over the past week it looks as if he came away from his meeting with PL knowing that it was all pretty much done. Then nothing. Goodwill shot to pieces so how can they create a working relationship going forward? Shame really. Lessons will need to be learned.

And based on Lambert's comments something different entirely happened.

Yes, Lerner wouldn't in my opinion sanction the deal - which smacks of sell to buy. Lerner needs to go - where have we got after 6 years of his reign?

And in his place we need a multi-billionaire with no other business interests who can guarantee a few trophies and wave a magic wand so that every transfer is sorted within hours. Piece of piss - I can't understand why every club doesn't do it.
-
What were Lambert's comments on it? I missed whatever it was he said!

Aye, and Feyenoord haven't behaved that much differently from us over Gaz Baz. Double standards much? I still fully expect Vlaar will be a Villa player next season. Beyond that, I'm not going to jump to any conclusions about what the club have said behind closed doors or Vlaar's character.

MON usually goes for players from his 'old stomping grounds', that have 'plied their trade' in UK football or that are 'journeymen' with a point to prove.
Sorry, been reading that football clichés website a lot recently.

Just read this on "The Transfer Tavern" website:
Vlaar is an imposing figure at 6’2″, but I have my concerns over this deal. Richard Dunne and James Collins aren’t exactly fleet footed at the heart of Villa’s defence, and one of Vlaar’s main deficiencies is that he’s quite slow, making him susceptible to pace.

Juvenile would be wanting our owner out because he's not rich enough, if you want to support a team that does'nt have to worry about their wage bill when signing players then there's a nice little team ran by very rich men up in Manchester.

We've gotten to a cup final, we've had a few adventures in Europe, we spent multiple seasons pushing for a champions league place, we've had some of the best players in the country play for us, everything about the Holte pub, we finished within the top 6 consistently for 3 years or so, and we've come on leaps and bounds in public relations with things such as Acorns, and we've continued to develop very talented players through our academy.
Are you saying you'd trade that all in now? Sure, we've taken a bit of a slide recently - but we improved so much so fast it was always going to be a battle to maintain that level of success. We've had our problems and made a few mistakes, let's just use them as a learning curve and move on into an exciting new era where we can hopefully reclaim all of the above; and maybe a little more.

Yes, but where are we now compared to six years ago? People like Barry, Milner, Young, Downing etc. have been let go due to us not pushing on - we've gone backwards in the last two years with such inept leadership from the Chairman.
-
I wonder will MON test Vlaar with a bid.that would be heart breaking.
Heart breaking?
I'd never heard of him before we were linked and all I know now is that he's quite big and a bit of a nutter.
I reckon I'll survive if he doesn't come.
-

Looking at it from another angle, Barry had tried to leave a few times before Randy arrived and the other three almost certainly wouldn't have been Villa players in the first place if it wasn't for Randy.
-
Villafirst: In many ways our early success under Randy was as a result of him chucking money at it in the same way - but a lesser extent - that Man City and Chelsea have done. It was “financial doping” that could not be sustained in the long run without us fans either multiplying or spending a lot more on tickets.
In the background Randy has also invested large sums in the infrastructure of the club, the training ground for example and possibly increased investment at a youth level. Whilst this investment does not reap immediate rewards it should not go unrecognised or ignored just because he is now seemingly trying to run Villa in a more viable manner.
-
Plenty more fish in the sea. There's one person who's word we should have taken, because he's been straight down the middle from day one, and that's Lambert. He stated that things were far from the done deal the papers made out last week.
There's no use debating what's happening with our transfer budget. We'll know for sure come August 31st.
Randy's done a lot for us and gave us a much needed boost when Doug looked like he was gonna head a sinking ship, pig headedly into the championship.
Okay we've gone full-circle somewhat but with few exceptions, most owners out there couldn't outlay what Randy did initially, without having to turn the tap off at some point. We gambled on being top 4, it didn't quite pay off so the books have to be balanced again. Poor choices in managemet since O Neill meant we fell off far worse than we should have, but Lambert seems the right man to not just stabilise us, but move us forward again.
It's just a little bit early to get back onto the Randy bashing. Almost to a man we can agree that this time, he's appointed the right manager. That deserves some credit. Hell we could be competing for the title every year like Utd and still moan about our owner like that lot do.
Randy was naive with O Neill and in a lot of aspects but one thing he's shown of late, that he won't do is take us into financial meltdown. He knows business.
If we don't sign Vlaar, it doesn't bother me. When we shift the remains of O Neills dead wood and shite like Hutton too, then we'll really be able to kick on a refresh the squad. Lambert, and we all knew this realistically, needs to sign 8-10 players to really build his own squad, on top of the few decent players we have. That will take 2-3 windows to do all the buying and selling/releasing required. So far, so good. Plenty of time left.
-
Well said Tom.
-
It's all about the management choices to me - in the last couple of years Lerner has made one questionable choice and one very bad choice - but now the signs are he's made a much better one. So demanding RL leave before we see what happens with this new management team is bad timing in my eyes.
-

Exactly. And there's pretty much no chance Randy will just up and leave. It'd take months, IF anyone happens to have the bankroll to takeover and he'd still have to want to sell. I also suspect with Randy, that he quite enjoys overseeing the club. He's not the fans favourite he was 3 years ago, but I think he still has an affinity for this place.
Anyone wanting him to just pack his bags and leave need to think again. Wish in one hand and shit in the other, see which one fills up first!

So your happy after 6 years of Lerner's reign? Where were we when he took over in 2006? How much progress has there been in the 6 years? Try and answer the questions without your juvenile insults!
Would Chelsea be asking the same question of Abramovic a year or so ago when they had regresed to be a 3rd/4th place PL side not winning anything, which is what they were before he came along?
The thing is that football is cyclical by it's nature. They may have won more than we did, but they also spent more. We've had a bad two years, but that does not diminish what we had for the first 4 years of Randy's reign or that we cannot get back to that again.
-

To be fair, though, that'd be to ignore the three league championships, three FA Cups, and two league cups they'd won in the time between him arriving and last season, so it's not the most relevant of comparisons.
-
All of those trophies where won when abramovich was still pumping the money in. Once he eased off they fell away again probably because they did not have, or more likely trust the players coming through their ranks.
Randy has invested in the youth and training facilities so hopefully we will also bounce back but in a way that does not demand Randy’s millions.
-
Why is everyone so certain it's off?
Feyenoord were annoyed we won't pay without selling. Collins and Warnock will be off when we come back from the US, won't they?
Transfers are risky business, few clubs operate without a sell-to-buy policy and we were spoilt enough to be one of those for a few years. We can't afford to risk signing Vlaar in case Collins doesn't sod off. It's understandable really.
Footballers are people and we can't just shift 'em around when we want. Collins will probably want his free transfer next year as opposed to moving now and missing out on a pay day.
-

Depends if we've got a buyer.

He said: “They know what Ron costs, and yet a week later there has still been no contact. He wants clarity. It should be decided around this weekend or else he remains at Feyenoord.

I thought that original quote came end of last week, and the weekend just gone being the deadline. Sure I remember Koeman quoted as saying that he wanted the decision by yesterday.

I know none of us knew a thing about him, but you have to say, if he ends up at another club when we all thought he was going to be here, it will be kinda weird. In hindsight, "heart breaking" was a bit over the top. After all the mouthing from himself and his manager over the last few days, it looks unlikely that he'll be partnering Clarke or whoever in our reworked defense.
-
He wasn't a player I gave much thought too but I was certainly aware of him and have been for a few years.
He's not some fringe player, he's Feyenoord's captain, a Dutch international and was touted as the next Jaap Stam a while ago.
I'm not going to be inconsolable if the deal falls through or anything but I certainly hope we get him. If for no other reason than he'll play instead of Dunne and/or Collins and I dont have to watch their oafish bungling.
-

Well if we haven't then I'd prefer us not to sign him. We need to be run sensibly and we've got a coach who (hopefully) can get the best out of what we've got.
-
If the buy out clause is really £3.2m we would struggle to find another international defender for that sort of money. Dunne and Collins have only 1 year left on their contracts. We will have to find another CB before the start of the next season, unless we plan to partner Clark and Baker and have no-one on the bench as cover.
In my eyes I'd rather bring Vlaaar in, then we have the option of leaving the Pie King out when he is too fat to fit through the changing room doors, and probably save money on next years shopping list.
-

Hopefully the emergence of Clark and Baker will ensure that the Collins/Dunne combination will not be seen again anyway.

I don't know if he's ready for regular primetime just yet, but I must admit, Baker impresses me a lot.

He did okay and at least as well as the other two when called on at the end of last season. Better with the ball at his feet too.
Did he make a Dunnesque fuck up at any point? Can't remember any glaring mistakes that he made.
As bad as it was last season there is one good thing that has come out of it and that's the emergence of some of the kids. Yes, there is still plenty to prove but in Clarke, Baker, Herd, Lichaj, Carruthers, Johnson and maybe Bannan Gardener and Weimann we have at the least capable players who will push the rest for a starting spot.
-
Man U away was a poor fuck-up but the ball shouldn't have come through to him for their (I think 3rd goal?). But, liek above I am impressed with Baker and think he is a better centre-half than clark - who I still think is a better defensive midfielder than cerntre-half.
-
I think Baker looks better defensively, while Clark (without the e, please!) looks better on the ball and a better all round footballer. I think they'd make an excellent combination, but the lack of experience you get playing the two of them together is a worry.
-

Baker is a very smooth player. He isn't far off and has really impressed on this tour. Clark looks just about ready. His reading of the game is very good indeed and while he might be caught for pace when is positioning is a little off his IQ will be enough in most cases. I still thinknhe needs a senior dead next to him. He would have really benefitted from playing next to Martin Laursen. That would hsve been a superb partnership.
As for Vlaar, he's a younger, better version of Richard Dunne. Easy to forget that Dunne's 32 now and Vlaar much of the same tenacity that Dunne has. He was a very good player a few years back and can still show flashes of it and especially if he stays away from the pop. Vlaar offers a big personality that the club is in need of which is why I hope it still happens.
-
There's a lot of faith being laid at the feet of Clarke. Let's hope he's not another Villa youngster who's built up but ultimately turns out shit.
-
I couldn't care less if Clarke turns out to be shit. He gets a lot of praise on here but I don't think I've seen him have a good game. I'd sell him to Houghton.
Clark on the other hand...
;-)

I think the season will start with Dunne being played with either Clark or Baker.
EDIT: As things stand anyway.

I'd be very surprised if a new CB did not arrive this summer. Collins has been connected to a few clubs in the media which I think is probably a way of letting it be known that he is available. I think it will be a case of Collins moving on before another CB comes in though.

I remember a certain Gary Cahill looking ropey against Man U early on in his career, whatever happened to him ????

Best ever. I think I developed Popeye like arm strength from smashing that stuff up into the custard.
Our custard was usually perfect too. No lumps.
It helped that the other option was often Semolina, which is shite.

My Mom is a retired school meals cook and still has the recipe for chocolate concrete and makes it if I ask. My other half tried it once and it came out awful - best left to highly trained dinner ladies!

It has been noticable that PL made comment to Dunne's weight / fitness and he has played very little in the USA games
Hopefully PL does not see him as our future
Come on Down Vlad the Impaler

Ah fuck him.
Does anybody remember chocolate concrete for pudding at school?
I think I developed Popeye like arm strength from smashing that stuff up into the custard.
You dirty little sod.
-
yeah, I loved it. And pink custard.
Pink custard?? Chelmesley wood puffs!
-
My Mom is a retired school meals cook and still has the recipe for chocolate concrete and makes it if I ask. My other half tried it once and it came out awful - best left to highly trained dinner ladies!
Any chance of posting it JM?
-
Chelmsley Wood custard was pink from the nosebleeds of dinner ladies we'd head-butt for not giving us enough chocolate concrete.
-
In Longbridge in the early 60's we were actually given brown concrete
-
You've trumped me with that one Willy. I surrender.

Classic H&V, the meandering onto recipes for chocolate concrete.
The only way it could have been more H&V would have been if it had happened in the GM ITK thread.
-
Yes, we may not have got our man but we do get the authentic 'dinner lady' recipe for chocolate concrete. It will be some sort of consolation when we let in another goal from a corner.

Got quite dewey eyed with all this talk of Chocolate concrete. If you succeed with the scan would appreciate a copy. Cheers.

I'm sure the combo at my primary school was chocolate concrete with GREEN (mint?) custard
Well said - I was about to type the same. It was definitely green mint custard at all the schools I went to.
I cant wait to see the recipe - not for the taste but to see what the magic ingredient was that made it harder than granite.
-
What i loved at school - even better than the chocolate concrete was when the dinner lady asked if Iwanted custard I'd reply yes. Just as she started to pour I'd quickly move the bowl. Narked her right off - especially as i did it more than once. i was a right bastard then as well.
-
Chocolate concrete was definitely normally served with pink custard. As far as I know it was nothing more than flour, cocoa powder, sugar and butter mixed together and cooked. It therefore required no cooking ability whatsoever, and could be made for hundreds of kids with hardly any effort at all at a cost of mere pennies.

Now you're talking! Our school used have different combo's of concrete and custard. The jackpot was chocolate concrete with chocy custard, lovely. I used to love school dinners.
Sorry, what were we talking about...?

You are right Riss. My mum was a dinner lady at one point too and has the recipe. It is the quite large quantity of sugar that gives the texture I think. My sister knows the recipe too, I'll try and find it out, but I'm pretty certain those are the ingredients.

Forever the accountant! ;)
-
We used to have green (minty???) custard. No one else liked it and I generally had the whole jug to myself!
You could also put the choc concrete in your pocket and save it for later!
-
Chocolate concrete is dead easy to make.
It's just butter, eggs, sugar, self raising flour and lots of cocoa powder.
Melt the butter, add the flour, sugar and cocoa powder, mix it up, add the eggs, mix it again, stick it in the oven for 40 minutes.
Experiment with amounts and temperatures for added fun.
Must be left for at least an hour after cooking to allow it to set properly.

One thing I learned from my Mom is that you NEVER dis the dinner lady massive! Expect a posse to be heading for the IOM right now to deliver their righteous wrath.
-
A dinner lady will hold your coat while you fight her.
-
defo mint custard
-
Gary Shaw used to hoover up EVERYBODY'S leftovers at our school. If he wasn't so brilliant at football he could have been our Barry Austin.
Sorry to bring up something Villa-related.
-
Green custard? What blasphemy is this?
There is only one custard, yellow be thy name.
-
I don't get this 'mint' custard theory either.
I reckon a fat arsed dinner lady unknowingly knocked some peas into the mix and covered her clumsiness by inventing the concoction mint custard.
-
I'm sure the combo at my primary school was chocolate concrete with GREEN (mint?) custard
We had the "green custard" as well. However, since I ate it and I'm also allergic to mint flavouring, I think that ours was a lime flavour
"Chocolate concrete" was known as Tarmac to us

Pretty certain there were no eggs involved, as that would have given it a richer, Victoria sponge cake type consistency. And as the name suggests, it certainly wasn't the fluffiest of desserts!
-
Works for me Risso, one egg in a shit load of mixture, you need it to bind it otherwise it becomes all crumbly and totally unlike concrete.
-
Green minty custard was the dressing of choice for our chocolate concrete also.

As for green custard??????

Our school was so posh it was called Beton de Chocolate with Creme Anglais.

You must be far too young supertom - the concrete stuff was a regular on the no-choice school menu of yesteryear. You know, before they started doing all that nutrition shit and giving kids alternatives to "proper" food.
And yes, the custard we had with it was defintely green - and mintyish - I'm colourblind, but even I could see it was green!
We're Aston Villa, we glow in the dark (like green custard!)

Is it true that the armed forces are provided with slices of concrete in their breast pocket to act as a bullet proof shield for the heart?

Where else in the world could you have a discussion about the potential signing of a current Dutch International CB and it descends into a lengthy thread about preffered custard colourings and variants of chocolate puddings

It's Our House so we'll take a thread in whatever direction we want. Although the custard direction was maybe One Step Beyond the normal.

Oh God PWS, You're An Embarrassment.

I agree. It's One Step Beyond the pale.

Bringing puns into the discussion is just Bad Manners.

That;s why they call ITN the house of fun.
-
Apparently according to Matt Kendrick, we will resume talks with CR when we return... (guess we probably assumed this may happen anyway?)
-
Aren't we back already?
-
Think they were due back sometimes in the silly hours of the morning (can't remember where i read that but seemed fairly legit), so no real business today, tomorrow things might start moving again.
-
Aren't we back already?
They would have returned yesterday so I'm guessing they will all be back properly on Monday. It's a long way from Portland and they would have stopped at least once along the way because they flew out of Seattle. It will have taken it's toll on all of them. It's a long way, a lot of travel and airport waiting around, the training, the games and for thr most part it was unbearably hot.
As for the Concrete One, I can still see him being a Villa player with James Collins being sold. We wouldn't have brought him over otherwise. Unfortunately Feyenoord shit themselves and ended up trying to pressure us in to getting the deal done when we were never going to while we were on tour.
-
Oh good. This thread title will need excavating in the near future.
-
According to the oh so reliable twitter, we have agreed a 4mil fee for Vlaar
-
It's on there website apparantly, medical on Monday.

Is twitter a reliable source... you could say is it a foundation to build on?

Wat een held die Vlaar. Je transfer naar Aston Villa is je gegund!
I don't understand Dutch but this looks promising! Google translate gives this
What a hero who Vlaar. You transfer to Aston Villa is your award!
-
It is indeed on Feyonoord's website that a fee has been agreed, along with a three year contract, so that's good news*.
*I think, as I've only seen him play once.
-
Feyenoord's web site is saying we've reached agreement with them on the fee (release clause), he's agreed terms, and he's having his medical on Monday.
-
Does this mean we were, indeed, intending to sort it all out once we were back?
-
So the deal was never off.
-
Does this mean we were, indeed, intending to sort it all out once we were back?
Seems that we could only cement the deal post-tour. Until then it was in the mix but not solid.
-
Great stuff, a bit weird that Feyenoord went so strange about the whole deal though.
-
Assuming this one's all sorted on Monday, is it another deal sorted quickly well done Paul & Randy, or a farce that dragged out FaulkneroutfuckoffLerneryou'rekillingourclub?

Probably the holding club holding out for a bit extra and it seems the player. Nothing wrong with a bit of haggling and I am glad to see the club are being prudent for a change. If as reported at €4m seems good business.

God, I really hope Randy sells up and fucks off out of here. He and Faulkner are embarassing. We need owners who will invest in the club like that Hong Kong bloke down da road.

-
4million euros is good business - the euro has dropped to about 76p so even cheaper!
-
Another deal concluded quietly, sensibly and without any fuss (from us).
-
I've got a few euros I keep in a paint tin in the kitchen if they're any use

Vlaar told the club website: "It's a strange feeling to leave Feyenoord, but it's a dream come true to play in the Premier League.
"We [the club and myself] spoke again today and sorted some things out. It was a lively conversation and Aston Villa apologised for the way they acted in the last weeks."
After six years at the club, Vlaar has become something of a key figure at the Rotterdam outfit and is hopeful fans will not look down on him for his decision.
He added: "I can imagine that the Feyenoord fans, at this moment, aren't happy with me, but I hope they understand why I'm leaving."

Interesting that as a club we apologised over our behavior.

Aston Villa have agreed personal terms with Dutch international defender Ron Vlaar and, subject to medical clearance, a deal will be concluded with Eredivisie runners-up Feyenoord next week.
The 27-year-old centre half will undergo a medical next week in Birmingham before a potential three-year deal can be formalised.

Its like apologising to your missus when she is annoyed at you.
You might be in the right, but experience tells you to say sorry anyway.
-
May I just say, fucking well played by all at Villa Park. We never said one thing while Feyenoord ran around making complete muppets of themselves saying we'd fucked them over this deal. We took care of our business in the US, won all of our games and came back and wrapped this deal up with no fuss at all. What a superb summer it has been so far.
-
I get the feeling that he thought the deal would be concluded sooner and so felt a bit messed around when we didn't due to having to go on tour. It's one of those situations where neither side is in the right or wrong and that could have been resolved by better communication from each side.
-
Pleased about this, a partnership of Vlaar and Clark has to be better than Dunne and Collins, plus both are comfortable on the ball and can pass out from defence. Bodes well for the style of play next season.
-
Fully agree ToLambo. In all the ups and downs of the Lerner era,the way we conclude our transfer business without any fuss or talking to the media is something to be proud of.
Welcome on board Ron.
-

He's been quoted as saying the Villa 'apologised for the way they acted' so that suggests we fucked something up.

It might also be something simple along the lines of "sorry if there was any confusion" as opposed to a major fuck up on our part. I can't imagine we actually told we would conclude the deal before we went away and then proceeded to leave him hanging. If that was the case he would have told us to do one I imagine.

I imagine we've at least doubled his wages. I don't think there are many footballers that would tell a club offering them that much money to 'do one'.

Faulkner looks pretty pleased with himself.

We were reported to be doubling his wages from 15k to about 30k if I recall correctly.

I imagine we apologised for bothering him/upsetting him - and not for our conduct.
-
Glad the concrete has now set,no need for reinforcement bars as Ron is hard enough!Going PSF at forest-hope he plays?
-
As ever we go about our business in the correct manner by keeping our mouths shut and concluding the deal as soon as possible.
-
i have watched this transfer from afar and if you read back for the various pages, there are some posters on here who are real fuckwits and are ready to slag the club off at every available opportunity. they cannot wait to jump on the bandwagon and just have a go at us, and they really piss me off.
let lambert, faulkner and randy get on with it and when you have anything to judge the club on then do so, and that basically means let them get on with it and play football.!

Some choose to see the negative in everything the club does, some choose to see the positive in everything club does and the other 98% are relatively normal.

Just as it wasn't a disaster when we went away without concluding the deal (someone said it'd be "heartbreaking" to see him go to Sunderland now - talk about exaggeration), neither is it an amazing piece of work we should all salute.
It is a piece of routine football business.

Looks like our "Team" Captain is sorted now!!!

Agree with you both. I think we'll probably keep hold of Dunne for another season as we'll need 4 centre backs and can't see us signing another.
Collins will probably be off next week, my guess is West Ham.
-
Well done, Villa. My only concern is whether he's going to be a bit gobby with the media if and when things don't go his own way... Time will tell!

While I might agree with most of that, what exactly constitutes routine? Football must be one of the only industries where that word can't be used with any sense of consistency. What I will say that for us I hope the way we've done business this summer becomes our routine and not what we became accustomed to as routine in the last 18-24 months.

In the same way there's really nothing extraordinary about this deal, I don't really see how we've ever had a problem completing transfers, to be honest. Look at the Bent deal. Knew nothing, then boom, it happened, and nobody in football saw it coming. Our problems have been elsewhere.
What I don't get is why so frequently, everything has to be so extreme. It's either all good or it's all bad, there isn't much in between. All that wailing last week over Vlaar, for example. Did people not think "hang on, if we really wanted him, we wouldn't be doing anything to jeopardise the deal"?
We've had a totally standard summer so far. Nothing amazingly brilliant has happened, and nothing terrible has happened. To be honest, that's exactly what I wanted this summer.
This time last year, we were making the most baffling managerial appointment I think I've ever seen anyone make, and starting a course of events which very nearly got us relegated. Against that background, I'm really happy to take nice and steady this summer. Unexciting suits me just fine.

I know footballers are generally very stupid but lying to the press about your new employers apologising for their conduct would be right up there as a major faux pas.

I think given the backdrop of last summer this summer is amazing if you think about it. It's not like we were taken over and have a new group conducting affairs. Unless off course you believe in body snatching and that the real Randy and Faulkner are now under the influence of aliens that happen to be Villa fans. Somehow the board have seen the light and everything has been efficient which is how it should be I suppose.
I'll take quiet and steady all the time if that now becomes the norm.

Ooh aah Ron Vlaar, say ooh ahh Ron Vlaar!

Has anyone else mentioned that Koeman is the cheating tosser who messed with Graham Taylor in that England qualifier? Shoulda been sent off, then scored a free kick.

A friend of mine who supports Feyenoord has sent me the following scout report, it all sounds rather promising.
- Pretty good header
- Pretty good long pass
- Very strong (could be a MMA fighter)
- Bit of a fighter (in the good sense)/leader on the pitch and a popular player at the club Feyenoord.
- Was deemed to be the next Jaap Stam but never fulfilled that promise (also due to injury)
- Was with Clasie, El Ahmadi (yours also), Bakkal and Guidetti the carrying player of the team this last season for Feyenoord.
- Has suffered his fair share of injuries. Quite some actually, but is to full fitness, also thanks a specially designed regime for himself.
- Had a mixed, maybe even bad first part of the season (Groningen away was the absolute low), but second part was pretty good. Good enough for a Dutch NT squad spot and ultimately a starting spot against Portugal over Heitinga.
- IMO he turns slow around his own axis, meaning an agile player that easily twists and turns can leave him in the dust.
- Though he is not slow. Vlaar has proper speed.
- He is a bit stiff, also from all the working out he has done I guess.
- Overall is a decent defender. Made for EPL if he was ever going abroad. I think he must be scaled into the category useful club player if he comes to Villa and plays in EPL. I think de Vrij at Feyenoord has a higher ceiling (was really the stand out in the last U21 game for Holland) and the same goes for BMI probably (not sure about him though). In the short term this is going to hurt Feyenoord, but if both named CD develop well and build a good understanding (something de Vrij and Vlaar had) then they could be good and use the money for a striker. Or not, as Vlaar was in a talent share construction IIRC and so I guess they have some pay back to do. But that's another story.
-
Ooh aah Ron Vlaar, say ooh ahh Ron Vlaar!
He'll have to be pretty good to warrant his name being included in that chant.
-
It's one of those situations where neither side is in the right or wrong and that could have been resolved by better communication from each side.
He's been quoted as saying the Villa 'apologised for the way they acted' so that suggests we fucked something up.
Or he's trying to save face.
Exactly!
I know footballers are generally very stupid but lying to the press about your new employers apologising for their conduct would be right up there as a major faux pas.
Indeed.
It may have been a courteous, "sorry we weren't able to get it all sorted prior to the USA trip", but he wouldn't say it if there wasn't an apology from us.
Which is fine, we apologise and we sign the player we want. Everyone is happy.
-
On paper a great signing. 4m euros for a dutch international and of an age/experience we would need if we’re looking to start Clark.
Off topic, but would anyone be worried what size Dunne could get to if he’s not playing every week?
Whilst we need 4 CB, an unengaged Dunne is less than worthless.

While I'm just as excited as everyone else for a Clark/Vlaar partnership at centre-half, would it be worth querying whether we might be playing Clark at Left Back? We know he can play there, and it might be a more sensible option in Lambert's mind than a complete overhaul? Being as it seems he's not just a meat-head player like I assumed he might be, maybe he could play at the back with Dunne?
Not saying that it's what I think we should do, I'm just offering it as an idea.
-
Looks like our "Team" Captain is sorted now!!!
Far from it.
He's a squad member as it is is the way I see it. A number of sterling performances and an ability to lead and show his passion for the club might get him to that position at some stage later.

Too slow Chips in my opinion. Nice as cover should it become needed, but I'd rather he had a couple specialists there. Stevens hasn't done badly but is a back up. I'd like too how the lad Creswell does if we get him. I think Clark with some good coaching can be a wonderful player.

I think you're right to be honest. It'll be interesting to see what happens in the Left Back position then.
-
Does seem from his interest in Cresswell that PL is after a left back and if Ipswich want to be silly he will look elsewhere

The fact that Ipswich have already gone and purchased a new left back leads me to believe that the Cresswell deal isn't too far off.

Concrete Ron MADE the deal go back on.

Is he a Left Back then? I've heard his name on here a bit but do you know what he's like? Is he any good?
-
Am not too sure that Ipswich actually signed the Doncaster left back, think he was also talking to Middlesbrough. Aint got a clue about Cresswell except that he is a left back and highly rated by the Ipswich fans
-
Boom. I was sure that Ron would be a Villan, good on you son.

May be its just a cultural thing. If a colleague says to me "sorry about not being around yesterday but can we sort this job now?" they are just being polite rather than making an outright apology. Maybe that's what we said and Ron said we have apologised?
-
Everybody apologises to Concrete Ron.
-
sorry ron

Apparently. Bit of a cultured left foot. I've heard him being compared to Baines and we'll all be delighted if that's the case. Apparently Ipswich fans are little gutted which is always a great sign

Through all the friendlies so far, the armband has been shared around, to me Lambert has been keeping it warm till his own man came in.
Now he's here. I don't think it'll be long before he's wearing it.

Otherwise it'll be given to that famous 'leader of men' - Darren Bent. I think if he has a bit about him and is the sort of vocal character he seems like then I'd have no complaints with him as captain.
-
Not that it matters who wears the piece of black elastic any more than it matters who washes their shorts the day before the match.
-
I have no problem with a new signing getting the armband.

Concrete fucking Ron.
Shut up Stompy ;)
-
I have no problem with a new signing getting the armband.
New gaffer and new captain to light a spark under some players who have been in cruise control these last few years. I don't see why he shouldn't get the armband. He gave up Champions League football to join an above average English side. We must praise him for that, and if he shows he's capable of properly leading the team than so be it.
-
To quote The Pointer Sisters, I'm So Excited.
-
I'm absolutely delighted with the way Lambert is setting about the job and I really believe Concrete Ron is just the type of character we need about the place at this point in time

That sort of dominant centre back is exactly what Clark needs. Not the fastest pair though are they?
-
I'm absolutely delighted with the way Lambert is setting about the job and I really believe Concrete Ron is just the type of character we need about the place at this point in time
Yeah, if nothing else, he appears to be the sort of person that cares. There were too many last season who were just phoning it in, so hopefully this will either expedite their departure, or give them the kick up the hole that they need.
-
Signed, sealed, delivered, he's ours.

The Ballad of Big Bad Concrete Ron .
Every mornin' down the Villa you could see him arrive
He stood six foot six and weighed 2-45
Kinda broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hip
And everybody knew you didn't give no lip to Big Ron
Big Ron.... Big Ron ...Concrete Ron .
Nobody seemed to know where Ron called home
Just drifted into town and stayed all alone
He didn't say much he kinda quiet and shy
And if you spoke at all you just said ” Oroit ? “ ..to Big Ron .
Big Ron.... Big Ron ........Concrete Ron .
Godzvilla!

It will probably see the departure of Collins in the coming week.
-
That's a shame.
-
Gutted, i'm sure. He will end up at PubeHeadland no doubt.
-
That's a shame.
We'll struggle to score as many from corners that's for sure.

This is great news. I don't know how much PL thought about it, but having Vlaar at the back to play the ball out to El Ahmadi, like he did at Feyenoord, could be crucial in our playing the ball out well from defence.
It's just another thought to inspire confidence really, along with giving Bannan the armband (he's always had the talent, just needs guidance and confidence) and playing Clark as a centre back. Goodbye the era of Dullins, hello the age of Vlaark!
-

Not necessarily.
"Hello Ron, Feyenoord, sorry for the delay. Right where were we"?
Nothing more to read into it than that.

A little snippet from Twitter:
"Ron Vlaar: Of players to attempt at least 100 passes at Euro 2012, only 5 had a better pass success rate than Vlaar's 93.4%"
Very encouraging.

So would you play Clark at Left Back or find someone else, such as this Cresswell chap I keep hearing about?
-
I'd start him on the bench unless we don't sign a left-back which I think we will do.
I'm not convinced by Clark yet at all.
-

I'm not convinced by Clark yet at all.
You must have missed all of his displays at CB then Peter this summer. He looks very composed and it really suits him to be playing in a ball control, possession system. Had TSM still been here Clark would have struggled because we gave the ball away so much and our defenders were always on the back foot with quick balls being played over or around them. Now he is going to have a strong defender who also likes to pass next to him and in all likelihood two young, quick full backs outside and with a hard working midfield core in front. He'll make some mistakes but he'll be just fine overall.
-
I have to agree with ToLambo Villa here, I've been nothing but impressed by Clark last season and if it weren't for some injury problems and being played out of position in holding midfield, he might have been one of our stand-out performers.
I also recall him having a string of very strong games 1 or 2 years ago at centre-half around the time he debuted.
-

All? It might have been that he saw him play at centre-back for Newcastle 6-0 Villa.

Clarky looks, to me, physically stronger this year too. I wonder if he's been hitting the weights?
-
He did say this summer
Newcastle did a bullying job on us that we just were'n t prepared for, Clark had also barely kicked a ball for the first team by that point, the 2 years in between have mad ea big difference.
They key for me is, if we're going to see an irish central defender make a few mistakes I'd rather it was one in his early 20s who's inexperienced than one in his early 30s who's thinking about pies.
-

of course I'm happy that he's looked composed in the tour games but they were only fitness run-outs. the 3 teams we played rested players also and of course the games weren't played with that proper competitive edge. I expect the friendlies to lift in tempo and competitiveness the closer we get to the start of the season and it'll be better to judge who will be starting.
As it is I still see Clark as a composed player whose good on the ball, not blessed with great pace, has a tendency to dive in, and isn't big enough to put himself ahead of baker in the pecking order. But, I've not seen enough of Baker's ability with the ball at his feet to judge whether he'd be a better option.
Either way he's first reserve should Collins go.
-
I think you're reading too much into a couple of friendlies in respect of Clark, Toronto. He's got the ability but it's the physical side of the game that he needed to improve and we won't know about that until see him back in PL action up against better players. I've got high hopes for him but I'm not convinced he'll be in the side when the season starts.
-
Clark is a cracking player and I really believe he'll make one of those CB positions his own this season.
I think that will happen.

It's the frustration about Collins as he capable of short passing to a competent level, but he lets himself and the team down when he tries to be the Ginger Beckenbauer!

Could this summer get any better?
If you were to script it from the full time whistle at Norwich you'd be hard pushed to write a better one. Work to do, but it really is very positive. I just want to resign the past two years to just an ugly period in our wonderful history and have the manner in which we have conducted affairs this summer become the norm. Lambert won't achieve everything this season so there will be times we'll have to be patient. But we are moving in the right direction.
-
Bet Collins scores against us from a corner first game
He's welcome to. As long as it's the 91st minute and we're already 5-0 up.
-
Vlad the Impaler
Dunne
Clark
Baker
Is that enough?
-
Lichaj and Lowton (with Williams a promising youngster as well) can both play centrally if we have major injuries, you wouldn't want any more central defenders than that who are considered first team players.
I guess it depends a lot on if you believe Clark and Baker should count as first team squad members or not.
-
We've been awful from free kicks and corners for 2 seasons, at both ends of the pitch. I'm glad we're making changes.
Bye Collins. Weclome Vlaar.

I still don't think he'd ever be a first choice centre back.
Maybe not but he'd have been good to keep in the squad especially with Dunne getting older and slower.
-
Now, if we can just shift Dunne.
-
Vlad the Impaler
Dunne
Clark
Baker

I think Baker has looked decent when he's came in last season, would be a cheaper squad alternative than Cuellar.
-
The trouble is though Clampy, Carlos was on a heck of a lot of money to be just a bit part squad player. If he was on a lower wage which reflected being a squad player then I'd agree with you totally.
-
Now, if we can just shift Dunne.
You got a forklift?
-
Now, if we can just shift Dunne.

I've got a sausage roll on a piece of string.
-
The Mail reckon he might play tomorrow.
-
It's all gone a bit quiet at VP. Should we be concerned?
-
Only if Vlaar starts mouthing off to the press again.
-
It's all gone a bit quiet at VP. Should we be concerned?
Yes, that trademark deafening noise from behind the scenes at Villa.
No.

Word going round on a couple of news now sources that Vlaar will make his debut against Peterborough tomorrow.

-
My sources have told me that the apparent delay in announcing this deal is that every time Ron has stretched the shirt for the photo he has torn it in half.
-
I thought Chelsea were signing Hulk ?
-
There is no Hulk but de Huulk.
-
Any news on what's going on?
-
There is no Hulk but de Huulk.
That's the fella
-
Aston Villa would like to confirm that there is no news at the moment. (Sorry I made that up)

Now, if we can just shift Dunne.

I've got a sausage roll on a piece of string.
mmmmmm , wait there not for me dam it
-
Panic not, apparently there is no hold up, it's just that they can't get Ron to stop bench pressing Richard Dunne.
I'm wondering if we might be holding on so that we can announce 2 signings at once... Am I getting over optimistic?
-
Given he had a lot of injuries a few years back maybe they're taking extra care with the medical. Would be fairly sensible in this situation i'd think.
-

Haaaah.
I'm wondering if we might be holding on so that we can announce 2 signings at once... Am I getting over optimistic?
Yes.
-
Has he officially been announced, ITSABH?
-
Sky Sports have announced that Collins is currently having his medical, so I guess we're waiting until he's gone to do the deal. That's probably not news to anyone though.
-
Why would we wait? Surely we wouldn't have agreed terms if we were waiting to sell Collins?
-
Why would we wait? Surely we wouldn't have agreed terms if we were waiting to sell Collins?
Maybe they just want to announce the two deals at the same time.
-
Why would we wait? Surely we wouldn't have agreed terms if we were waiting to sell Collins?
I'd assume that agreeing personal terms is just before giving the final nod on the deal. So, we sell Collins, and then put it through or what have you.
-
Just would like to see it confirmed
-
Same here. It's certainly dragging on, especially considering a few people were saying 'announcement expected monday morning'
-
I don't think that the two deals have anything to do with each other in terms of timing. I have every confidence that the Vlaar deal is being completed. They've already agreed all of the terms. Maybe something in the medical procedure is slower than it should be and is holding things up, so barring something bizarre it will be done and dusted soon enough. The way I look at it is no news is good news where Villa are concerned.
-
The hold up is Villa arranging insurance cover post medical. With his history it's not proving to be straight forward.
-

Is this for real or is this a funny?
-
The hold up is Villa arranging insurance cover post medical. With his history it's not proving to be straight forward.
...and you know this how?
-
With random other ITK comment, its done.
-
Perhaps there is a problem with the medical or something.
I hope not, but if there is, I'd much rather we found the problem now than in the middle of the season when is out through knee-knack or whatever.
-
On the other hand, exactly this time five years ago we missed out on Haangeland over a failed medical and he hasn't exactly turned out badly for Fulham. Presumably had a less ropey injury record, granted.
-
I have a vision of puzzled doctors looking at x-rays saying "well that's just Gravel & Cement with a little water, does this make him stronger?!"
-
Concrete Ron only needs one knee.
-
Laursen was injured for much of his time at villa and i guess its wise to err on the side of caution in these deals but i really hope this move goes through as vlaar is exactly the sort of player needed.
-
call me daft, but could it be down to tomorrow being in a different tax/accounting period? Just a thought!
-
call me daft, but could it be down to tomorrow being in a different tax/accounting period? Just a thought!
That seems like a surprisingly likely reason.
-
Might save us a month's wages.
-
Is it likely that a tax or accounting period starts in August?
-
as i understand it companies vary depending on when they were formed, vat periods are every 3 months . Didn't randy take over in august? If so, then yes, tomorrow would be in another year's accounts. If anybody knows different, then i apologise i'm only having a guess
-
call me daft, but could it be down to tomorrow being in a different tax/accounting period? Just a thought!
Bing bong... Rissbert to the shop floor please...
-
Isn't tax the reason we initially only loaned Davies from the stripies?
-
I am hearing from my ITK , the thing holding it all up is the just vehicle that Ron wants in his Villa contract as Lerner does not really want to see it in the club car park but Ron absolutely loves it.
-
Isn't tax the reason we initially only loaned Davies from the stripies?
Fuckwittedness was the reason we bought him.
-
Ron's apparently had the tour of the city centre today, and when he saw the sheer quantity of concrete in the Central Library, he was happy as a dog with two cocks.
Apparenty, the backroom staff are all shitting themselves over who tells them it's got an appointment with the wrecking ball....
-
Maybe its waiting on the Collins deal so he can be allocated the #4 squad number - would seem silly if they showed him (Vlaar) with #4 shirt then the Collins deal falls through
Only a thought
-
I do think the Collins and Vlaar deal will be anounced together.
-
Telegraph reporting that Vlaar passed his medical yesterday - so it should be announced today.
-
PornDwarf's son (@jsullivanwhu check out his revolting profile pic) has just tweeted that Collins has signed.

He looks like a ventriloquist's dummy.

He's probably as full of it as his old man

The club's accounting period is 31 May each year.

Id say its pretty OFFICIAL (http://www.whufc.com/articles/20120731/hammers-return-for-ginge_2236884_2865700)

Fuck the Dome.
-
Why is this deal taking so long, I wonder?
If the medical was Monday, plus the fee and personal terms had already been agreed, what is holding it up?
-
They're waiting for Ron to calm down.

You know what it's like, whoever used the cheque book last didn't put it back in the drawer so they're all frantically searching Villa Park while as a last resort Faulkner is preparing to go to the cashpoint to withdraw £3,000,000.
-
Nice of James to say how much he loved WH, how he did not want to leave and that he returns a better player

I imagine he'll sign and then head back to Holland to get his personal items. I suppose he could be travelling with the squad to Peterborough to watch, but it's more likely we'll see bulldoze someone in red at the City Ground.

Ron Vlaar is determined to follow in the footsteps of Villa's great centre-halves of yesteryear after completing his transfer from Eredivisie runners-up Feyenoord.
The 27-year-old Dutch international has completed the formalities of a three-year deal which will take him up to the end of the 2014-15 season.
He is the club's fourth new signing of this transfer window following the arrivals of Matt Lowton from Sheffield United, Vlaar's former Feyenoord team-mate Karim El Ahmadi and fellow Eredivisie veteran Brett Holman from AZ.
The club have also re-signed goalkeepr Brad Guzan to a new three-year deal this summer.
Vlaar was an ever-present for Feyenoord last season and he captained the side as they clinched Champions League football with their highest finish in more than a decade.
Having become a cult figure at the Dutch club, he intends to cultivate a similarly strong relationship with Villa fans and will be unveiled officially on Friday afternoon at Villa Park where he is looking forward to meeting supporters.
"I am looking forward to following in the footsteps of players such as Paul McGrath, Olof Mellberg and Martin Laursen, of course - all of them great players for this club," Vlaar declared.
"But I also do things for myself because I want to get the very best out of myself. I can't do it alone, I also need the other players in the team as well as the fans, who are so important. By us all working hard for one another, we can achieve our goals.
"We must work together to make things better and to get good results. We have to do it on the pitch and, with the support of the fans, we can get it going together.
"Over time I hope my relationship with the fans at Villa becomes the same as it was at Feyenoord. I was at Feyenoord for seven years and the fans were good for me. It would be great to experience the same here and I will strive to achieve this."
Paul Lambert is convinced that Vlaar's class and pedigree will make the Dutchman an instant hit in the Premier League.
"Ron is a really good defender and he has a wealth of experience for both Holland and a big football club in Feyenoord, so I'm delighted we have got him here to Villa," the manager said.
"I like the way the guy wants to do well. He's hungry and he wants to succeed. He's also a really good, strong defender and hopefully we will get the benefit of him in our team.
"Certainly, I have no worries about his career so far. He's captained Feyenoord, who finished second last season in the Dutch Eredivisie to qualify for the Champions League, and he's been in the Dutch international set-up and was part of the Euros, so he's a proper player.
"He'll bring something to the club, no doubt about it."
Vlaar has been capped nine times for Holland [scoring one international goal] and he aims to build on this total, firmly convinced that his best years will be at Villa Park.
"I am very happy to be here and I am really excited about getting started," he added.
"This is a dream come true for me. With my past, I am very proud but I always look forward and this is a great opportunity. I am very happy that Villa have given me this chance.
"For me, I want to play a lot and improve my play and do well with the team. That's most important.
"I am 27 years old and I know my best years are ahead of me. I feel fit and strong and I am looking forward very much to playing my first game.
"I have had good conversations with the club and with the manager. I am looking forward to training under him and seeing what we can do together.
"I know some of Villa's history and I have been in the stadium already and saw all of the pictures of great achievements - it's great. I really believe we can bring the happiness back. The stadium is fantastic. I've only seen it so far when there were only a few people around, so I know it will be terrific when it is full of Villa supporters.
"I am looking forward to starting training with the squad and then playing, of course. I think there is a lot of quality here and, if we play like we can as a team, we will make it difficult for other teams to beat us. That's the most important thing, we need to get that feeling back to the team and the results have been good so far in pre-season. We will be quietly confident going into the new campaign."

Welcome, Concrete Ron!

The 2 day medical was more about details including xrays/scans etc being reviewed between Villa Doctor and medical agency appointed by the insurance company rather than Ron actually lying on a couch for the duration!

Welkom menneer Vlaar.
A fine piece of business I reckon and I've no doubt that he will be a success at the club.
With both Ron Vlaar and Brett Holman secured from the Eredivisie, I'm now hoping that Lambert comes back and makes it a trio of Eredivisie talent.

Can't be any worse than £10m Curtis Davies was for us.

He's way down the pecking order at Citeh I don't think they'd have a problem selling/loaning to us at the moment
From what I read in the press here, he came to Feyenoord as Citeh did not want to loan him out to another Premier League club. Perhaps the circumstances have changed, but I understand that to be the case.
-
Ron Vlaar can't wait to meet the Villa faithful - and his wish will be granted on Friday.
Vlaar personally requested the opportunity to meet the fans of his new club and will do so at the Villa Village Store at 2.30pm.*
Vlaar was a huge favourite with supporters at Feyenoord and he made it clear in his AVTV signing interview that fans are vital for any club's success.
The huge centre-half will be on hand to greet supporters in B6 and will also happily sign items purchased in store on the day.
Vlaar has been handed the No.4 shirt if supporters wish to print his name and number on their new Macron/Genting shirts.
Other squad numbers will be confirmed very shortly.
The meet and greet follows a press conference to herald his arrival at Villa Park that same day.
*Please be aware that this time is subject to his training schedule and may change by 30 mins or so at late notice.

Maybe the player wants to play in the PL now though and would push for a move if he had no chance of getting any game time at City, that's what I hope anyway. We need another centreforward and he would fit the bill perfectly

-
Welcome to B6 Ron! May you fill the void Laursen left that was never filled.
On a side note, Ron in, Collins out, and Hutton seemingly on his way all in the same day? This is brilliant.
-
Welcome big man. Make a name for yourself and get the Holte End rocking again. We've needed a solid character down there since Laursen departed. Good luck!!
-
How refreshing to have a Manager who signs his players early, instead of that idiot MON who left it until 31st August and signed panic buys who were mainly mediocre on high wages and long contracts. I hope PL buys a new LB, cover CH and a new striker - we still need to boost the numbers as several players have left an already small squad.

Why not? We'll do well to be within 30 points of them next season and if he's on loan to us he can play against their rivals.

Does anybody know if he is playing tonight ?

Me too. I'm still keeping my expectations grounded though. Anywhere from 11th to 8th would realistically represent a good season. That's taking into account the fact that although we underperformed last season and have strengthened in the pre-season we still face a challenge breaking into a top ten that has probably also improved.
-
shit . I have not picked up my Lambert to be manager winnings yet . Just remembered .

Ron Vlaar
Give thanks and praise to McGrath
We're gonna be alright

Pleased about this and good to see the positivity on here. But must confess I don't know much about him. Are there any experts in dutch football on here who can tell me how good he actually is.

A guy I vaguely know who supports Feyenoord gave the following scout report on him, having seen him play for a fair few years:
-
Cheers Chipsticks he sounds like a more natural partner for Clarke than Dunne.
-
From the highlights I've watched and everything I've read about him he'll be the more aggressive ball winner, allowing Clark to sweep behind him, this is usually effective in the prem (vidic and ferdinand being a good example who play the same way) so they could make a very good pairing. Dunne and Baker both seem more comfortable in the more aggressive role so I'm not sure we've got a natural replacement for Clark, which is where I think we'll look to bring in another defender.
Going off on a tangent, looking at the way we've paired defenders recently got me thinking, Luke Young and Cuellar both liked to sweep behind from fullback and did it very well so I wonder if the main reason for the defence working under Mon is that we always had 1 of the full backs covering that role, which allowed Collins and Dunne to be more aggressive. After mon left we never saw the fullbacks used in that way and suddenly the previous solid looking partnership showed it was a lot more fragile than we thought.

I fully agree with you there.

Interesting if the Douglas rumours are true. I don't know anything about him, but the fact he is a Brazilian 6 foot 3 centre back suggests he should be good in the air and reasonably quick (is it racist to think that a black man is very unlikely to be slow?)
It's only a rumour at present so unwise to read too much into this. I was initally both quite intrigued and a bit disappointed for Clark. But we know Lambert likes to rotate (although I'm less sure he does that with centre backs so much). But it might be that he thinks Clark is ideally suited to some games (at home, and against ball playing sides) but would prefer a different combination in other games (eg against the likes of Andy Carroll he might want a Vlaar type warrior?)
Anyway, idol speculation really.

I agree too. That, and defending less deeply. Plus both players have always been inconsistent throughout their careers. We shouldn't forget quite how fantastic Collins and Dunne were for the majority of that first season though. Laursen will always be loved for his commitment, but both were a step ahead of Laursen for that period (as evidenced by our vastly better goals against record when they joined compared to the Laursen era)

my view of things at Villa: Rosie
I think we'll struggle without Collins' zeal.
Sterling work gentlemen!
If TSM hadn't have been sacked would he have Resigned? We should be Coping just fine once Lambert gets his squad finalised in the next month and who knows, come the New Year Sky could have us on Sunday Sunday if we're flying high.
TheManWithAStick, check out their BBC6Music live gig from yesterday.
I'm hoping we're no longer MOR and that our recent Look Inside America demonstrated we have some Young & Lovely footballers ready to fly high like Swallows in the Heatwave. There's No Other Way for Villa to move forward and lets hope Lambert can make us live For Tomorrow.
I will also be there on Sunday - should be good!!!

From OS Ron Vlaar will be at Villa Village this afternoon to meet the fans and sign things, a great touch I believe.

'There's no other way' to say this but my love for Villa is back fully after it was slipping away from me last year.
I'm off to see Blur in Wolverhampton Sunday, can't wait.
I think this could be Villa's year. Genuinely. 'Cause it really, really, really could happen. Yes, it really, really, really could happen.....

Whether we win silverware or not this season I'm convinced we'll give it a real go in every game. All I want is to see us go into each game with a plan to win. Last year was simply horrific from that standpoint.

I had my son with me on my delivery route today and we took a big detour to B6 for this. He's now the proud possessor of a new home shirt, and we also got interviewed by Jack 'Jack' Woodward for AVTV (which I don't have access to...).
Felix (my lad) had made Ron a "Welcome To Villa" card, and he seemed genuinely touched at the gesture. Ron came across as a genuine bloke, was relaxed and at ease with the supporters, and is a big bugger - reckon he'll put fear into any centre forward who dares run at him...
Am taking Felix to his first home game vs the Boggies at the end of September, to say we're both looking forward to it is an understatement :)

Rodders, I have just watched it on AVTV. Ron looked and sounded absoloutely touched by the gesture.
Kudos to your Son.

Ron Vlaar plans to live up to his nickname of 'Concrete Ron' with some passionate performances for Villa.
Vlaar gained the solid moniker with his all-action displays at the back for Feyenoord and also for the way he bulked up during his time out injured.
The 27-year-old plans to be a rock of the claret and blue defence and give it "absolutely everything" to help Villa win games this season.
He said: "Yes it's right my nickname is Concrete Ron!
"I had some injuries in the past and I trained really hard to come back. I did some muscle training and came back very strong and after that, they gave me that nickname."
On being asked if the nickname suggests he's a tough cookie, he continued: "I think so, yes.
"I am a player who wants to win every fight and every game. I look forward to going against the new strikers I am not used to playing against.
"I play with a lot of passion. I just want to win every game, no matter what. I hope to bring that over to the other players and the crowd and then we can be very strong."
Good friend Karim El Ahmadi told Vlaar his game would be perfectly suited to the Barclays Premier League because of his combative nature.
He continued: "I talked to him a couple of times before I signed.
"He was saying that there's more physical strength and speed in the game than in Holland.
"He told me it that would suit my game. I talked to some other players who play in England and they said the same to me."

yes, there's a real buzz about the entire place and with everything to do with the club. Haven't felt like this in years!!
ps. if you contact the club they'll probably be able to send you that clip for you and your little boy to keep

Top idea!
I'll do that.
-
The more I see the more I think we've got someone a bit special here. I really hope he becomes the player I think he can.
-
Saw it on AVTV. Beautiful stuff, Rodders.
As Paul_e says, Vlaar is coming across as something special. He's saying some great things and they don't seem to be the standard platitudes. He comes across as a winner, a real team player and a guy who genuinely recognizes that supporters are an important part of a winning team. You get the impression he is the kind of fella who can not only unite a dressing room and team but an entire club too! No wonder the supporters in Feyenoord are so sad to see him go. He's a very positive lad, that's for sure. How good a footballer he is we'll have to wait and see, but I'm right behind him and hope he has a hugely successful career at the club. Great to have you on board Ron.
-
Lots of footballers don't really make an effort at all. Others make the effort, but you get the impression they only do it when they have to.
Some go out of their way to make an effort. You get the impression the Concrete One is one of them.
-
The more I see, hear and read about this guy the more I think he's going to go on to be a Villa great.
-

I believe in you. You believe in me. You transcend the universe. God is smiling on you. Life is a waterfall, and you are the ultimate rainbow
-
He might fill a Mellberg shape hole - in more ways than one.

I've said it a few pages back, he'll be team captain by the start of the season!
PL has already said "He's a leader"
That's one of the reasons for bringing him in.
-
Does anyone have the interview on SkySportsNews from today? It was on with the sound turned down in the pub tonight.
Dutch players generally, even Van Persie who's being accused of being greedy/traitor now, tend to come across far more humble, articulate and nice in interviews than your average prima donna.
-
Hope he gets a good run out this afternoon just so we can practice our songs for him.

I'm personally not a fan of 'Ooh ah Ron Vlaar'. I'm much more partial to 'Concrete Ron M'Lord'.
-
So which do we have - the new Mellberg or the new Laursen?
Both had great passion for the club and I'm glad to see the new boy continue with that tradition.

With the injury problems Laursen had, I'm hoping for the former!

As Long as its not Alpay [ he had passion for the club and a rappor with fans]

Not sure it's the right thread but after getting a bit on his back when I thought he was bullied against West Brom, I'd like to give credit today to Ron, he was easily our best player on the pitch and read the game really well. More of the same please Skip.
-
I'd be a little more confident on the defence when Dunne is fit again tbh.
He certainly isn't perfect on his last two seasons but he still has good games on occasions and another centre back who knows the league will help Vlaar I think.
-

Just in time for a move to the MLS.

That's disappointing. I haven't been convinced with the Clark, Vlaar partnership and was looking forward to see Dunne back. We could do with his experience.
-
I think Clark and Vlaar are the first choice partnership regardless of Dunne's fitness. They looked good today (apart from Clark's run with the ball when he shouldn't have). They'll get stronger over time and we have pretty much started all over again. Dunne won't be around from next summer I imagine so bringing him back won't exactly be building for the future. The defence just needs time to nit together and understand eachother. Vlaar was excellent today but he showed against Southampton and West Brom that he's still getting used to the Premier League.
-
I think we need another centre half when the transfer market opens.
-
Vlaar has reminded me of Dunne in that he can look excellent for 89 minutes but can switch off or drop a huge bollock in that other minute. Not sure how well that would work as a partnership.

Yeah but Dunne has been playing in the EPL for something like 10 years. At least Ron can be excused for still being in his adaptation period.
-
Feyenoord fans said he had a chronic five game spell last season before coming back and looking majestic.
-
I like him, I think overall he is very good and will improve as he grows accustomed to the league.
-
I'm more worried about Clark.

I thought he was good against the Tesco Baggies and didn't seem to do anything wrong yesterday. Infact, he has only really had two shockers this season (Everton and Southampton) and the rest of his performances have been decent.

I didn't think he was good against the Baggies - he was regularly knocked off the ball by Long despite being twice his size, his distribution was panicky which is very unlike him, and positionally he seemed a bit lost.
It would be good to have Dunne back to give us another option - we could play Baker but despite being pretty solid most of the time he's the slowest footballer I've ever witnessed.

I guess it a case of seeing the same thing from two angles. I didn't really notice what you describe. But I see what you mean now I think off it. I noticed the amount of headers won and interceptions during that game. All of centre backs are lacking in pace and a mord pacy CB should probably be on the shopping list in January.
-
I'm more worried about Clark.
be interesting when dunne is fit. Im not his biggest fan but we need some experience in there and Lambs might bring him in and not to upset clark , move him to Defensive midfielder.
-
Lambert said at one of those fan forum thingys that he didn't see Clark as a central midfielder at all which surprised me.
Didn't realise Dunne injury was that serious, thought he'd be back in contention after these internationals.
Could do with another CB in January methinks, I'd be happy with someone like Dawson.
-

I saw that, too.
I'd go as far to say he didn't just say it, he was really quite emphatic about it.
-
Clark was learning the role last year and struggled at times but he also had games of genuine quality like Chelsea away when he played very well.
Yet again we are struggling for defensive steel in midfield so yeah surprised Lambert has ruled it out.
-
Never been convinced by Clark. I think we will be a lot stronger with Dunne back. Any idea when that should be?
