Title: Aston Villa comebacks
Post by: Legion on January 29, 2012, 07:29:46 PM
0-2 down at H-T against Arsenal only to win 3-2 (the 'Santa' fixture).

Didn't we also beat Spurs 4-2 after being 0-2 down?

2-0 down at home to Blackburn in the league cup, won 6-4. That night seems a lifetime ago now.

Nice thread, wrong time.

On nights like tonight all I can think about are the times when we've fucked it up.

This is really the wrong thread but this was the undisputed high point of the MON era. The slide from then on happened frighteningly quickly.

Just to go against the grain of misery a bit more does anyone remember being two down to Wolves in the League cup (1983 ish) and coming back to win 3-2. I think Andy Gray tried to break sir Dennis' leg and got sent off. That may have been the beginning of the slide for them. I can't remember whether Tony Morley or Steve Hunt got the winner. Doesn't seem 30 years ago though.

Spurs 2-0

Spurs 2 - Villa 5.

In the 'official records of Aston Villa' they published the ten greatest matches Villa were involved in.

One being four nil down to Liverpool in about the 66th minute. We proceeded to come back to draw 4-4 and a Villa player missed a great chance to win it.

I'm pretty sure we weren't 2-0 down at Palace, as we either went 1-0 up or levelled to 1-1 before going 2-1 down, then equalising late on. Not being pedantic, but I remember Collins scoring early on down our end.

Coming from two down to beat Crewe 3-2, same as we did in BFR's first game at Sheffield Wednesday. Two down at Spurs and winning 5-2 again in BFR's first season. The day we helped send Coventry down. We also like to give teams a couple of goals start in at least one leg of a semi final. We couldn't come back against Bolton under DOL but fortunately we turned around the Tranmere, Arsenal and Blackburn semis.

The Sheffield Wednesday away in 1991/1992 and the Tranmere semi-final were the best ones I ever attended. Honourable mentions to Arsenal at home and relegating Coventry (when will they be back, by the way?).

That sounds about right Bernie.  Myself and the old man were at the Sty that day (shame) and I remember thinking at half time that the previous week at home to Fulham we'd lost 4-2? and thinking that's nine goals conceded in a game and a half.  We couldn't believe it when they put the full time scores up on the scoreboard and saw the 5-5 scoreline, we thought they were taking the piss.  It was only when we'd walked back into town and got the early edition of the Argus that we believed it.

I have fond memories of the 2-2 with Newcastle in January 1996. I remember following it on the radio as a ten year old. It was a great game.

Newcastle went 2-0 up the second coming in controversial circumstances as Shearer seemed to tug Bosnich's shirt causing him to fall over leaving an empty net for Lee Clark.

Yorke pulled one back before half-time and Milosevic got the equaliser around 60 minutes in. It was main game on MOTD and I must have watched my recording of the highlights a hundred times.

I remember that game. I was 8 and my dad made us leave with about 5 minutes to go. As we got down the steps of the Holte we scored. We raced back up to see Barca kick off only for my dad to again say 'come on then thats it.' Half way down the steps we score again. 2-2. I whinged all the way home. The good news was that my Dad felt so guilty he let me stay up and watch the goals on Sportsnight.

Its the reason why I never ever leave before the end and why I cant understand people that do especially when the games are close

Your recollections re correct Bernie, 5-5 from 5-1 down, Hately(4) and Deakin the scores.

Alan Deakin missed more than a sitter. He chose to roll the ball into an empty net and then immediately turned to celebrate, thus enabling  Spurs defender to get back and clear before it crossed the line.

1978 Ian - the UEFA being our reward for winning the League Cup the previous season.

A great game, and Cruyff was immense, but sending Allan Evans up front got us out of jail in the last 5 minutes. I also remember a very weird chant from a group up the Holte of "You'll get a bunion on your Spanish onion if you're wanking tonight". Interpret that, if you will....

Arsenal has either been the scene of drubbings or memorable victories for the Villa.  Villa won at Highbury 5-4 in March '62, and my recollection of this is Arsenal were 4-2 up before the Villa made a late comeback.  However, it is 50 years ago so my memory could be playing tricks.
