To give Gabby a well earned rest? Good option to bring off the bench if we need him.

I'm sure the Rovers defenders would rather be facing Bannan then Heskey too.

That's the way I see it - probably just behind Bent to flick on Collins' hoofs

Presumably it'll be a 4-3-3 with Ireland pushing forward from the midfield and Albrighton and Heskey either side of Bent.

Although why it is Heskey in that position instead of N'Zogbia I have no idea.

Why not weimann or fonz if you want to rest gabby.  We need to win this as a good cup run is essential this season but at some point these kids need to play.  He doesn't trust them in the league and won't start them in the cup so how are they ever going to make an impression on the team?

I imagine if we can get 2 up, the likes of bannan, Gardner and weimann may get 30 minutes or more. Gabby and CNZ if we are in a troubled situation!!

I don't think throwing in Weinmann is a good idea. It's a going to be a real battle I think and Heskey has the experience of having the shit kicked out of him by clogging centre halves. As for Fonz, how many more years are we going to label him a kid? Not good enough for me.

Happy enough with the line up. I'd have given Weimann a start though, but I suppose Heskey needs games and he's ahead of him in the pecking order.

Be nice to see Weimann and Gardner for Petrov and Bent after an hour if we're in control.

Because he has had a good run of games hasn't he...

A player cannot be judged until he has had a proper chance 21 or 31.

Heskey though - FFS.  I just hate seeing him in a Villa shirt.  I hate watching him as a player, and as a team when he's playing we always revert to being shite, lumping balls up to the big useless lummox.  His final day in a Villa shirt can't come soon enough.

It's not all the performance issues, Heskey was mocked and ridiculed by the Villa fans and suddenly we are expected to engage reverse gear and make a hero of him.   Emile Heskey represents in many ways the forerunner of appointing Alex McLeish and the attitude of the board who regard the feelings of the fans as immaterial.   Give them a flag and they will stand for anything.   Cannot wait to see the back of him.

Sounds like 442 to me with Bent playing off Heskey.

It would be typical if Heskey played well today and scored a couple of goals.

I certainly didn't want to see Heskey in the side, I was looking for us to try and find a settled side and give them some practice together to improve the performances. I'm trying to think if we've played the same XI two games running. What I do know is that we play with a different system with Heskey in the side.

Look on the bright side, he'll probably on last 60 minutes but I do fancy him to score today.*

*In the same way I expect any of out outfield players to score today.

The pitch looks a bit boggy, which won't help. We need to get on the ball, dominate possession early on, but ensure that Ireland, Albrighton and Heskey really join Bent at every opportunity.

It's a good atmosphere isn't it? I've got a bit of a bad feeling about this one actually. Feels a bit like Palace away under MON.

Someone should just take Warnock to a field and shoot him.  He provides absolutely nothing to the team.  Shooting flat towards the far post was the only choice there, yet he fired 5 yards wide of the near post...

To be fair to Warnock, his final ball/shot had been awful but getting up and down well considering he's our only real width on the left.  I'll be kind and put it down to confidence.

I love that thing Alan Hutton does.

He'll look up the touchline, and then do an urgent hand motion gesturing to an imaginary team mate to come nearer him, then immediately after hoofs it 60 yards into space.

Clever.  Pretending he's a Premier League standard footballer able to pass it short.  The resulting League 1 standard hoof then completely bamboozles the opposition.

Think we need to get N'Zogbia on for Heskey. We're getting loads of space down the left - N'Zogbia can exploit that better than Warnock and we can stretch their defence to get crosses for Bent from both sides.

What a waste of time going to find the ball and then have another one thrown on just as you find the original one and then have to wait for the extra one to get off again and then as soon as it is thrown in you blow up for halftime.  Surely common sense should come into play and just blow it up when you realise this is going to take a while.

But this is Howard Webb we are talking about...

I wish we could make m ore than 3 subs, there's about 5 players who don't deserve to be on the pitch.

Both fullbacks have been terrible, Collins is a hoof waiting to happen, Bent is getting nothing to work with and appears to have given up even making the runs.

Heskey is a lump who encourages all the worst things in our game.

Ireland and petrov have looked tidy without really taking a grip on the game.  Clark has been anonymous but has done the job he's there to do pretty well.

Dunne looks ok but as always has the potential to do something stupid at any point.

Guzan has done well with everything (little as it is) he has had to do.

Albrighton has looked a class above the rest of the players on the pitch and is the difference between the teams.  Their left back won't want to leave the changing room.

it's warnock and albrighton who are creating the chances, with ireland prompting when in the middle. I think Delph for Warnock might be a good shout but can't see AM taking the risk. And there is a chance Delph will do something stupid so that may be the right call.

N'Zogbia for Heskey and playing wide left may be the better shout, although it's really Warnock getting the space because Ireland is tucking in so much.

It does. The boy can score goals. He's also technically poor and has a bad first touch. Both are excusable BECAUSE he scores goals. But what isn't excusable is that he isn't working hard enough, isn't making enough movement or even trying hard enough to get the ball.

If the latter is true then we should sell him, or he should retire. Heskey has won a couple of knock downs, Albrighton and Warnock have put in some good balls and Ireland is trying to pull some strings.. are they to blame for Bent's poor movement or lack of work ethic so far?

From the bbc live feed:

1843: Stephen Warnock is having a shocker. Again he has loads of space on the right but his cross is massively over-hit, to the back post without a Villa player anywhere near it. Rovers can clear with ease. I have a personal gripe about professional footballers not being able to beat the first man with crosses but that was equally criminal.

I used to play on a muddy pitch in Wakefield called Wrenthorpe Park.
I saw a match there the other day with old men strolling around misplacing passes and mentally already in the pub afterwards.

This match reminds me of Wrenthorpe Park.

gabby for heskey. gabby's done very well against weaker sides this year, so here's hoping. I predict he'll score within 10 minutes.

Didn't the useless eejit only last til half time in his last match?  About the only redeeming feature of Heskey is that he picks up knocks every other game thus meaning he doesn't get prolonged runs in the side.

Told you (alright 20 not 10 minutes)

Lets get gardner and weimann on for 25mins, no point lauding the kids/academy if we can't give them pitch time against league 2 opposition with a comfy 2-0 lead.

His failure to use the kids more at times like this is my biggest thing against mcleish, we need to rely on these kids but he's not willing to give them gametime so we pick the same handful of experienced players week in week out regardless of form, fatigue, formation, etc.

In my view I am not sure what you are seeing, he has linked play and gone down the channels second half. Not sure what you want him to be doing, but if he is working the line, he ain't going to be there for the final chance. Catch 22. Bent this and last season are not much different, but last we worked the ball and created some space for him.

Bent is starting to get on my tits. Its like he believes he's world class and sticks out to me as one of those luxury players who can't be arsed to run, get stuck in and waits for everyone else to do it all for him. If it was me and we got £24 mil or more then I would let him go.

In my view I am not sure what you are seeing, he has linked play and gone down the channels second half. Not sure what you want him to be doing, but if he is working the line, he ain't going to be there for the final chance. Catch 22. Bent this and last season are not much different, but last we worked the ball and created some space for him.
Dont think he's all that in my opinion, he looks gutted when we score and doesnt seem to bothered about playing for Villa anymore. Last season I wouldnt of said this but this year I think he's heard the rumours about Liverpool and thought he could do with a few more quid so he can buy more Nike daps

I think people are reading too much into Bent's body language. He seemed pretty happy to be one of us at Chelsea as be bagged the third, and he's always run over to Gabby when he's scored or when Gabby has. When Marco scored there wasn't a big celebration because at the end of the day we're playing Bristol Rovers. Unless it's a last minute winner, getting too excited over this would be a little over the top in my opinion.
