Jenas on bench, no place for Wee Barry, looks like will be same team as last week...Shock horror

Would much prefer to see jenas , ireland or bannan in midfield rather than heskey who works hard enough but has nothing like the ball control or passing required to play in that position.

This is why the attendence will probably be sub 30k today. Just look at that lineup. It's set up not to win.

McLeish has a record of 1 win out in the last 9 games with us for a reason. He is a clueless man. Don't eliminate the possiblity of relegation just yet.

Post by: Toronto Villa on November 05, 2011, 02:35:51 PM
Come on McLeish. Pick a more attacking team. At least under Houllier he'd mix it up a little. Not suprised about Bannan being left out, nor about Jenas on the bench as I'm sure he'll play a part. But give Carlos a bit of time, or Ciaran. Anyway, let's hope for the best here.

What a joke sack Mccleish no forwards on the bench! Where's Weimann or Delfouneso! Might of well left Weimann on loan @ Watford

Dare i say it seems a team set up to go out and not lose rather than a team set up to go all out for a win.
Little in the way of creative flair and could be a game of few chances for us , lets hope bent puts them away today if he gets any, long time since ive seen villa park so empty at 2.45.

If Heskey plays behind the strikers then we really are in for a long winter. Reading Kendricks piece yesterday,it basically said Heskey was picked for his height and defensive work,if thats the case he may as well play Clarke.

Cuellar and Clarke should be playing. Other than that you cannot really argue with the selection. It says more about the state of our squad than McLeish's ability as manager.

Generally, no, but Ireland's mad, Bannan might not be in the right state of mind to play, and Jenas is probably only 30-40 per cent fit.

You could perhaps argue that Delph should be playing in midfield rather than Heskey, but there is also questions about his fitness, and he has hardly set the world alight so far this season.

Heskey left wing - McLeish isn't doing himself any favours with these kind of tactics

Petrov hasn't the mobility to cover in a 2 man midfield either.

Sadly, my pre-match prediction isn't as way off as I hoped it would be:

1-1

To our surprise, Norwich will dominate the match early on, but we will score on the break with Gabby.

Then we defend our lead vigourously with 10 men behind the ball. Norwich runs out of steam, we start to control the match and even vaguely look like scoring a second. But then we concede on a set-piece in the last 5 minutes. After that, headless end-to-end until the final whistle.

We've been all over them! FFS, Villa.

Clearly we are watching a different game?
Clearly. I'm watching the match where Norwich are barely getting a sniff.

One one!

Even game in my opinion , norwich could have had 3 goals , hardly not getting a sniff , we are inproving last 10 minutes though.

Whatever his faults might be, McLeish seems to be the first manager for ages who seems to have cottoned on to the fact that Gabby is really quite speedy and that this can be turned to our advantage. Fair play to him.

Anyway, dismal, dismal first fifteen minutes aside we've been decent here, and I'd say we could (probably should) be in front.

Not bad.

Title: Re: Aston Villa v Norwich City Match Thread
Post by: supertom on November 05, 2011, 03:54:31 PM
Not bad so far. We're giving away silly free kicks again and the chief culprits are our fullbacks as usual.

N'Zogbias playing okay. Gabby's been excellent and Bent looks dangerous.

Heskey's a passenger and we could benefit from Jenas legs and ability in midfield.

Herd I like the more I see him. He's a good sweeper in midfield. He's probably the best we have for the job right now and he's decent enough on the ball to get us moving forward. We're passing it around reasonably well today, but more so because of the space and time Norwich are leaving us, than any change tactically. We still need some extra legs and quality in the middle to help out Stan and Herd.

Gabby has been our best player by a mile and dragged us back into the game. Herd has settled nicely too. Nzogbia isn't tracking back that much but is far more confident on the ball after a decent display last weekend.

Heskey hasnt been that bad but it makes no sense to play him. Especially in midfield.

Some awful indiscipline on show by a number of our players, well all our defenders, Petrov and Gabby. Just mindless stupid fouling. It was there last season and again this season. It might only seem a small thing but it's indicative of our club at the moment.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Norwich City Match Thread

Gabby, Bent and Nzogbia playing at even 90% should be a pretty formidable attacking three, especially when supported from the bench by Albrighton and dare I say it Heskey.

We just need to find a decent three behind them that have the right blend of industry and creativity.

Were not Man City but no way was that negative defensive football, Gabby and Herd playing really well again,
I also don't care what people say about spanking Norwich, they are a good side who gave Man Utd a run not so long back
We could still do with some quality ball play from out of defense instead of the big hopefull hoof

Agree with all of this.
I guess my view is that the midfield is so imbalanced: I'd like to see a true 4 in MF - Petrov, Herd, Delph and Jenas (with BB being an alternative to either Delph or JJ), and 2 from GA, Bent and N'Zog up front.
With Clark and Cuellar at the back (in place of Hutton and Collins) we'd be pretty good.

BIG improvement during the half, but apart from Gabby we haven't asked enough questions of what looks a shaky Norwich defence. We still hoof the ball too much, and nobody's telling me that Heskey on the pitch is doing much for our creativity that Ireland couldn't do.

Warnock's generally done well, but he has annoyingly given the ball away a couple of times.

3-1 up at home and coasting. Just need to stay solid and see it out.....

...so we take off our holding midfielder and send on Ireland, having already sent on a not-fully-match-fit attacking midfielder.

I just don't think that's a very good idea.

No, the main problem was Ireland not getting the block in on the right hand side.

We've had 3 or 4 good chance to slip Ben through and haven't (choosing the wrong ball every time).  It's not just the defence.   Jenas looks good so far.

Its dispiriting that Gabby is carrying Bent our 24 million pound striker. I think he single handedly kept us up with his goals last season but this season he hasn't impressed me. Missed some absolute sitters
Norwich are fighting for this, please hold on Villa. PLEASEEEEE!!!!
