Available Saturday evening.
-
Lucky lucky Villa.
-
I'm predicting a boring 0-0 draw.
Hope I'm wrong.
-
Don't know how we got a point there.
We were awful, Dunne on the whole was brilliant though.
-
Poorest performance from Bent that I've seen I thought. Great goal from Stan, Hutton was anonymous, Dunne was excellent I thought. Very lucky to get a point.
-
We are unbeatable!
Sounds like we were lucky but who the fuck cares. I fucking love Gabby.
-
What happened to Emile ?
-
Thankfully we still have some fight about us. It's McLeish's defining positive trait.
And how Gabby must love playing Everton. He has a great record against them. Wonderful that he accepted the responsibility of driving us on for the equaliser, starting and finishing the move.
-
Nicked that. Absolutely nicked that.
-
Drawing alot of games already i see!
-
Miserable performance, great result.
-
How did we get a point from that?
-
It's better to be lucky than good.
-

Was Hutton playing?
-
It's better to be lucky than good.
Can we have both ?
Dreadful display - concerned about N'Zogbia.
Bannan, I am now convinced he should be starting.
-
A point at Goodison is usually a decent result. They had a poor attendance today, shows that it's not just us suffering in this climate.
-
How did we get a point from that?
Because there was some real fight from a good few players in the second half.
Bent was off the pace and not surprising as he has been injured. Bannan looked worthy of a place and Dunne picked up where he left off from the Ireland game.
-
Where in the past we would lose when playing crap, we got a point out of this. A step in the right direction. Dunne seems to finding his interest again!!!!
-
lucky to get a point, but we will take it, least it wasnt 0-0
1st half performance was as bad as it gets,
-
Absolutely dire performance, with the exceptions of Dunne and Given, without whom it would have been a huge defeat.
Two moments of reasonable quality (petrovs goal obviously real quality) have given us a point that is impossible to make a case for us remotely deserving.
-
Poorest performance from Bent that I've seen I thought. Great goal from Stan, Hutton was anonymous, Dunne was excellent I thought. Very lucky to get a point.
Bent is clearly not 100%, he had no pace to run on to any balls.
-
A few more games like this and AM will be in the "hot seat". Totally uninspiring performance. We had horseshoes up our arses today.
-
Outmuscled in the centre of midfield.Great goal by Petrov, but at times was woeful.Delph is brilliant one minute, and shite the next.N'Zog is our link player nd needs a bit of help imho.
Bannan has to start the next game.
I thought the 2 FBs were ok, not sure about Hutton, but their biggest threats were Coleman and Baines, that was the main difference between the 2 teams if you ask me.
By the way that 17 year old who came on for them looks a good player.
-
Overall, we were lucky to get a draw.
Positives:
At least Hutton can't have another debut like that.
Barry Bannan will start the next game.
-
Bent wasn't fit, but I agree it was worth the gamble in starting him.
We need to play slightly wider, we gave Everton too much space down the flanks. Warnock especially.
Dunne & Given were good.
Very happy with the result, not the performance.
-
It's better to be lucky than good.
Disagree completely, 'played awfully but lucky' will always catch up with you...
-
Awful Villa performance yet we battled our way to a draw - all credit to the players - and very little to the manager.
We only started playing when AMC's hand was forced and he had to bring on Bannan for Heskey. Then later Albrighton - and we started to look like a team again.
Dunne is a warrior alright - but his positional sense for Everton's first goal was abysmal. They played without any strikers yet every time they approached our box they looked like they were going to score. They played some lovely passing football while we simply hoofed it forward from the back in the hope of a lucky bounce.
If this is what AMC thinks is football - prepare for more of this stuff. Everton controlled this game and we could have lost by four or more. The two in midfield were overrun again and we couldn't hold onto the ball or create anything. We were set up completely wrong. Forget big names Alec - play horses for courses. We need to see Villa use their midfield strength not this awful long ball hit and hope shit.
Everton - an inferior set of players with a superior coach
Villa - a superior set of players with an inferior coach.

Desperate at times, with a backs to the wall mentality you would usually see at places like Old Trafford. They were obviously up for it because of their recent troubles.
Bad Points: Our defence looked like it did last season at times, the way we let them stroll through our midfield was shocking, got undone by another stupid penalty, we made an average team look good is worrying, N'zogbia, no service for Bent or creativity.
Good Points: All credit for Gabby for making that 2nd goal, Dunne's performance, we were playing Everton aka The Elbows and we rescued a point.
-
Tripe
-
I love Gabs. Our Gabs.
-
A really poor showing which we were lucky to grab a point from. Dunne and Given performed well, and Agbonlahor (even out on the wing) showed why he is such an important player for us (I do wish McLeish would try him up front with Bent at some point, though).
Otherwise, we were crap, just not at the races at all. Petrov, Delph, Warnock, Bent, N'Zogbia all had stinkers.
But, to finish on a positive note, we do seem to have a bit of fight about us. It won't be near enough on its own, but it's important to have and it got us a point today where we didn't look remotely like getting one.
-
It's better to be lucky than good.
Disagree completely, 'played awfully but lucky' will always catch up with you...
true
-
Taking positives from this game is the fact we came away from Goodison with a point when we deserved a beating.
-

he's the latest big thing out of Everton, looks very impresive
he will be with them for another season or so then Man Utd will buy him for 25 mill and claim all the credit
-
Don't know how we got a point there.
We were awful, Dunne on the whole was brilliant though.
Yeah Dunne was great very impressed with him today
-
screw the result....screw the performance....the best thing today was the final whistle when we no longer had to put up with that whinging Evertonian Barry 'I'm not biased Horne.
-
Everton must really hate us.
We deserved nothing and got a point. Both goals were excellent, the only bright spots.
-
Looking very lower mid table to me already - be prepared to keep one eye on the results of the likes of Sunderland, Wolves and West Brom if you are not already! Thankfully, as last season, I suspect there will be three really poor teams in Wigan, Swansea and maybe Norwich who will be relegated
Amazed at the confidence we would win on the pre-match thread - as I said over there beforehand, Everton are at their best in adversity and anyway, Arteta was never going to be that much of a miss for them as he has gone off the boil. Witness his very average debut for Arsenal today
This management lark never ceases to amaze me. One look at the line ups beforehand would have told any of us on here that we would be completely outclassed in midfield. What happens? Dear me...
-
We were again too slow with the ball and Everton were constantly in our faces and used the ball very well at times. Fellini was the big difference today, he ran the show. After the break and more importantly the subs, we showed heart and belief, battling and creating chances.
I said after the Wolves game we've been carrying N'Zogbia and nothing has changed my mind after today. We still have a problem in midfield but when we get that right, we'll be right back on track. This is a season to give the kids a chance and so far they haven't let us down much. Delph will hopefully learn from today, it was a poor decision against a cheating bastard.
Still undefeated and hopefully we'll see a more adventurous line up against Newcastle. Oh.. and Gabby.. you're a star!
-
To be honest Im happy enough with that second half performance. Big difference was Petrov and Delph getting on the ball and keeping it on the floor. Bannan and Nzogbia were tucking in so we kept the ball for far longer. A load of negatives but at least there was heart and some brain to our play in the second half. Gabby had a fine second half, Bent was getting in his way really. Throwing his shirt into the crowd haha.
Negatives - Hutton overweight and hopeless on his debut. No wonder he cant make the Scotland team. Id keep Nzogbia and himself out of the side until they are properly fit. Warnock was shit too, fucking diabolical attitude with him. Nzogbia already looking unhappy, thought he wasnt too bad before being taken off but needs to get fitter. What was he doing all summer? Delph was stupid for the penalty, just before that too he bottled out of winning a header in our box too. I was happy with him for the 20 mins before then but he lost confidence after that and needed to be replaced. Biggest negative was Bent who was simply a passenger today and looked hopelessly out of touch. Gabby and him wont work but Gabby was far happier down the middle.
Positives - Given isnt fit but he is a fine keeper. Dunne was outstanding. Collins ok. Happy enough with the midfield duo in the second half. Bannan died out of it a bit but helps us keep possession. Albrighton wasnt involved much after coming on but the assist should give him a big boost of confidence. lovely crosser of a ball. Petrov finally cracked in a goal from outside the box, fair play to him after 2 games last week. Ireland had a decent cameo too I felt Id like to see more of him. Gabby was very good up top.
With Heskey gone, Jenas still to come in I feel we simply have to move to a 433/451 formation. Big decision to make up front.
-
I love Gabs. Our Gabs.
Ha ha
I'd bollock him for the shirt thing though !!
Given must be thinking it's like playing for Citeh's reserves but with a crowd.
Time to give Ireland a run I think.
-
I was at the game. So firstly I do LOVE a late goal celebration. Keeps me alive. Gabby is just ace. Beyond that Everton bossed the game, they were at home, and had a lot of possesion but not that many chances.A draw was about right for me.
-
Didn't see the game... from what I hear we played well in the second half? Had a look at the stats and the shots on goal is worrying. Atleast we came back twice and didn't give up.
Who played well? Who didn't play well? Was a draw a fair result?
-
It's the first time I've not really been bothered about watching a game for a while. I'm pleased we scraped a draw, but recently the enthusiasm has been completely sucked out of me.
-
That was garbage, again. Especially Fabian Delph, i don't get the hype at all. He's crap.
Everton must hate us, they always outplay us but never get any luck and never beat us.
-
It's the first time I've not really been bothered about watching a game for a while. I'm pleased we scraped a draw, but recently the enthusiasm has been completely sucked out of me.
Many of us are in the same boat Paul. I barely registered a 'yea' when we equalised twice. Meantime Radio 5 treat the utterly amazing fact that Man City are top as if they are some team who have been promoted two seasons running and who have not bought a single player....
-
Fellini was the big difference today, he ran the show.
I'd give him 8 1/2.
-
I have no idea what to do with our midfield. Bannan should definitely come in to improve creativity and ball retention in the final third but that won't help our lack of bite there. Delph has looked promising in that more defensive role but was poorer there today and there are still question marks over Petrov. Jenas is no defensive midfielder either. And for the wings neither N'Zogbia nor Albrighton deserve a place on form and confidence.
It is a real conundrum and I just hope that McLeish has a better idea of what to do than I have.
And I have to agree with Paul and Richard about my own lack of enthusiasm or interest at the moment. I'm just not as passionate about the club as I used to be and I'm at a loss as to how I can reignite my interest. Maybe McLeish can sort that out too...
-
screw the result....screw the performance....the best thing today was the final whistle when we no longer had to put up with that whinging Evertonian Barry 'I'm not biased Horne.
So thats who it was. I've rarely heard such biased co-commentating in all my life. I'm amazed he didn't join in with the squealing every time we went near one of their players.
Get the fuck off the telly and go and sit in the stand you whingeing prick.
-
Dreary future for rest of season if this is what we as led to expect.
Mid-table stuff..if we are very lucky. Not looking forward to scores against top 4..not one bit!
-
Urgh... just looked at the formation. McLeish needs to quit with it I think. Yea we came away with a point and that's great, but if he used a formation with with more imagination and creation... also using the right players I'd prefer that. It appears Blackburn are just shit when we beat them.
We need to play the strongest side as possible using the best formation possible and I don't McLeish is doing that. I know it's only 4 games into the season but if we want to see more games won, I think that might happen altering the team. 3 draws and 1 win isn't bad, but i'm not getting much confidence that we're going to win games... especially considering we've only played one decent team.
-

N'Zogbia wants to play in the middle, hence he kept drifting inside. You are right, the manager has to sort out what he wants him to do, and make sure he knows it. Otherwise, you could imagine him slipping out the team, and be another fair few million wasted.
-

surely he was working for everton in some capacity today wasnt he ?

Agree about the midfield and just hope that Albrighton takes some confidence from the beautiful cross for Gabby's goal. N'Zogbia just looks lost at the moment, I'm sure he has the talent but we can't keep carrying him.
-
big worry is N'zogbia, he is playing rubbish at the moment,
-
We sat far too deep and just gifted them possession. I realise that it was to be able to hit them with the counter attack but we still haven't got the midfield balance right so we ended up hanging on at times but
the defence was strong and kept us in it.
Our first goal came after a period when we'd been on top and I thought we'd go on and win it but Delph's daft challenge gave them the initiative again but fair play we had the fight to get a point.
-
Reasonable result up there, but my word, Hutton was atrocious. So sloppy in key areas and gets beaten for fun by wingers.
-
Got to give Dunny credit for playing. The face first fall onto the cinder track in mid week, with staples, would have sidelined most. The director, Mr. Hitchcock showed it in slow motion here and it was an horrific bounce on the side of the face. Well done that man.
-
big worry is N'zogbia, he is playing rubbish at the moment,
Apart from a few moments here and there he has been poor. Hopefully it's just a case of waiting for him to get up to speed.
-
Fellini was the big difference today, he ran the show.
I'd give him 8 1/2.
Like it.
-
Another vote for Albrightons cross, perfect.
-
With choices of Bannan, Ireland, Nzogbia, Jenas, Albrighton in midfield, you'd think we could get a formation to play some creative football. Maybe we're a little impatient...or maybe that's just not the way AM plays...time will tell.
Mind you that's one defeat in last 12 league games...get hard to beat and then get creative & winning.
-
If the Manager was brave..... Herd would be back next game, Bannan would start. At least.
He's the one who said he picked according to form.
-
I think we need a bit more patience with Delph. He shows promise when you consider it's his first real run of games in this league. I'm probably looking through rose-tinted specs because I'm always buzzing when Gabby scores, but it looks to me like we've still got a few good players who, hopefully, will start to perform as they get used to each other and the manager comes up with the right formula.
-
A good result. Good to see Petrov get on the scoresheet. Never mind the rest - it's a results business.

It was pretty sterile to watch today.
Very, very early days, but it was Blues-ish, I thought.
Still, the results are decent while he works on it, so hopefully we'll start to play with some more fluency at some point soon.

Agreed. I think with Delph we've just got to find his best role. We've been playing him defensively and he's done well before today but I still think he's best suited to a box-to-box or playmaking role instead. Once we find his best position he'll be cooking with gas.

Where to start with this game.
The first half was probably one of the most woeful performances I've seen. Going into the half time we were lucky to be down only 1-0, with little positives to draw from 45 minutes. While it is a shame Heskey had to go off, because I would never wish misfortunes on another and I am generally supportive of Heskey, but Bannan was one of our only bright spots and his entrance was a blessing.
As the second half squandered on our style of play was clearly more attack minded, and we actually started to string some passes together. There was a stint of passes that came around the 55-minute mark and I was stunned to see that we had the willingness to possess the ball in Everton's end on a day like today. Proud we fought, happy to get a point.. but there is a lot of work to do as far as the players, tactics and mindset.
To address individual players..
Hutton: It was his first game in a Villa shirt and he had some shaky moments, but we also have to take into account this was his first shot at first team football in quite a while. He was certainly nervy, but I think he will come good with Collins and Dunne next to him.
Dunne: Incredible game, not much to say but praise.
Collins: Solid game, strong in the air but needs to try and play to feet a bit more often. Nothing we're not already aware of.
Warnock: I don't understand all the flack he catches. Whilst he might not of had a great came, he contributed to the fight and was typical 100mph Stevie and always gives his best effort whether he's gone to ground or on his feet.
Delph: Obviously, still showing some signs of immaturity but had some seriously bright moments. Some great touches and in possession has good vision for the threatening pass. The pen was a pen, and an unfortunate one at that. Osman's soft. I wish he would try to get up the field a bit more, of course one of the CM's has to stay back but he is a good contributor in the offensive end.
Petrov: An absolute stunner of a goal that reminded me of his Celtic days. Worked hard and looked to play a standard Stan game.
Bannan: The spark we so desperately needed. A player that truly plays with a sense of urgency. He was sometimes hopeless against Fellaini's size but he held his own and had a great impact on the game. Very pleased to see him play well and hope he'll start from here on out. Were his defensive duties on the rigth flank, he seemed to be tracking back for Gabby quite a bit.
N'Zogbia: He wasn't as effective as I thought he'd be today. His agenda is much different in terms of service and taking on players than that of Ash and Dxwning. He needs to prioritize and get the ball to Darren Bent, end of. I hope he can turn it around and bring something to next Saturday's game.
Gabby: You beauty, you can do no wrong in my eyes. His pace is more threatening than ever and I thought he was going to get around Distin on that lone 1 on 1 break. So happy for him to save our point, and it's clear how proud he is to wear the shirt.
Bent: I don't know if he's not fit or needs a striking partner. His technical abilities are not up to par at the moment. He needs service, but he also needs to work harder and contribute more to the game than just in the opposing 18 yard box. Good for a goal next weekend.
Ireland: Didn't feature for too long, but he seemed pleased to be on the pitch and genuinely happy to be part of the tie. He also looked comfortable on the field, and not the typical "lost"
Albrighton: Glad he could contribute on the goal, especially to Gabby. He's got a good motor but always makes me nervous in the defensive end. He gives us a young and hungry dynamic that I like to see on the field.
Given: Great game, saved some crucial shots. Proving again to be the bargain of the summer. So glad to have him in a Villa shirt. With he and Dunne playing this well I expect a secure and responsible defensive campaign.
onwards and upwards, upthevilla.

Is Jenas injured? He wasn't on the bench.
-

Yes.
-
Is Jenas injured? He wasn't on the bench.
Yes.
Out 7-10 days, not expected to feature in the Newcastle game.
-
Just got back from the game.
I thought we were bullied out of it for the most part. We really struggled to come to terms with Fellani in the middle of the park and in the first half, we were far too narrow.
We showed a lot of bottle to come back twice, especially with so many players out of sorts, i.e. Bent.
We have that hard to beat quality back, with Dunne in top form too.
Last season, conceding a late goal, we'd have lost it, so its pleasing to see we have the resolution in us to battle it out for a point when we were playing so iffy. A point away from home is always a good result, especially at a place like Goodison.
Hoping for better performance wise and three points at home next up, but plenty of comitment there.
Everton fans were their usual whingy seleves. No songs. Just moaning.
-
It's a good job Heskey got injured. Saying we're becoming 'hard to beat' doesn't give me that much comfort at all.
-
question -
if the side is to defensive, and AM plays safe with his lineups
if we need to be more creative and give our forwards more supply
if we are turning into a Bluesish team playing boring football,
none of which i disagree with,
why do people still want a defensive midfielder ? wouldnt that just make us worse ?
-
Everton fans were their usual whingy seleves. No songs. Just moaning.
I know it's bad to make generalisations, and I actually quite like Everton as a club, but for a long time their fans truly have been the most whingey, miserable, chip-on-the-shoulder tits in the league.

Well, I suppose the theory is that a good one frees up the creative players more, or allows us to play with two wingers and two strikers.

While at the same time believing themselves to be so fucking special.

Everton are the people's club. Moaning, whinging, whining people, clearly.
-
Did anyone else seem to notice Bannan's defensive duties on the right flank? Late game tactics to release Gabby into a more attacking role, maybe..?
-
A hard won point. After the first half I was seriously worried. I'd love to know what AM said at half time that galvanised the second half performance. Maybe he should give his half time talk before kick off. :)
Great to see Gabby throw his shirt into the crowd when he scored, the yellow card doesn't matter, the point does.
And a big up to the travellers, you drowned out their fans for long periods Can we please have the same amount of noise at Villa Park next week?.
-

I think McLeish told Gabs to play up with Bent when we went behind again. So I suppose Barry went wide right.

That's kind of what I thought, but Barry would still roam throughout the field and onto the left. I'm glad to see a CM playing with such freedom and responsibility do it so well. Hope he keeps it up, I see no reason why he wouldn't.
-
Four games in and unbeaten, while at the same time having a new manager and new players yet to Bed into the side.
It could be a whole lot worse
-
We got a point, and I got to hear Stuart Hall on the radio spitting nails about it. Good.
-
Dreadful performance but I'm happy with the point.
Must do the lottery tonight with that sort of luck.
Dunne man of match - great goal from petrov but hard to understand how we got a point - everton must be devastated not to have won by at least 3 goals.
-
Just back from the game. We were poor and uninspiring - especially 1st half. Lucky to nick a draw. The ref was lenient as he could have a given at least another penalty. Pluses: Given & Dunne brilliant. Bannan definitely needs to start. Ireland added a spark and worked v hard when hew came on. Minuses: Delph, Nzog and Warnock (seems to be spitefully petulant - not sure whether it's because it was Everton. All in all happy with a draw. The substitutions AM made seemed well timed as well.

I think thats 11 league games since they last beat us so probably something to do with it.

They sure do. The bile being thrown at us on Bluekipper is great. Only Liverpool are hated more than us.
3 wins against us in 20 odd years has made them bitter and their chip on thier shoulder larger.

I know it's bad to make generalisations, and I actually quite like Everton as a club, but for a long time their fans truly have been the most whingey, miserable, chip-on-the-shoulder tits in the league.
I'm sure their fans would say exactly the same about us
You cannot have been to Goodison in recent years.
Every time, without fail, they piss and moan like nothing you’ve ever heard. Its a constant surge of whinging every time somebody has the audacity to disposes an Everton player or a ball goes within ten yards of a players arm.
Its really fucking irritating.
-
They can say what they like, we're still better than them!
And always will be!!!
-
member that time at VP when we beat them by a bagfull ?
-
It's rare on here that you get anything other than respect to Everton, the club. But they really do seem to dislike us intensely. What makes it even funnier is that they love to go on about if yer know yer 'istory. You'd think they'd have a bit more time for a club with an 'istory to rival theirs.

i still prefer them to most other prem clubs mind,
i nicked your Manchester- the new Glasgow for a facebook status by the way

Actually I have been several times - one of my favourite away trips. Massive whingers I agree but our home crowd is not that disimilar unfortunately.
-
Dave, spot on!
-
Villa, Spurs, Everton in no particular order, must be the biggest moaners in the prem league
-
I wouldn't be able to judge us being biased but I can certainly say that they are the biggest whinging home fans out of all the other teams in the league. To be fair they rarely get on their own teams back but that's only because they always think they've been hard done by, even if they've been comfortably out played. Barry Horne's co-commentary summed them up perfectly today, I don't ever recall hearing a more unprofessional performance from a pundit. Total disgrace.
-
Just watched the game and agree we were fortunate to get a point but then we should've beat Wolves and Everton got lucky at Blackburn so fuck it, Petrov's strike was cracking, he must've been told by Mcleish to shoot more because in every game he's had a couple of long range cracks, anyway my biggest annoyance is something that for us goes back years, wether it be under Gregory, Taylor II, O'Leary, O'Neil, Ged or Mcleish and that is our movement off the ball must be the worst in the league, its just non existance, so frustrating to watch, we have some technically good players in N'zog, Bannan and Petrov, we need clever coache's to drill it than when you don't have the ball you can still move, give the player with the ball options, its one of the reason's that our defenders reguarly lump it forward and why we find it hard to retain possession there for inviting pressure on ourselves, if we sorted this out we'd make life alot easier for ourselves.
-
Happy with a point. Personally I don't particularly like Everton. Two song fans, people's club and all that crap. Feck 'em.
-
First half? - we didn't seem to get going at all!
The back four all looked slow and lethargic.
N'Zog disappointing.
Bannan - looks the business on the ball but when defending he still looks lightweight.
Great to see Albrighton put in the cross for the 2nd goal.
Great to see Gabby defy the critics with a goal, playing more centrally late in the game.
Bent must be frustrated as hell - really well marked by Distin today.
Warnock - drifting back into his bad old ways. Very poor today.
Hutton? - pretty anonymous.
Star man? - Petrov. Grafted, motivated and also delivered. Not a 60-minute man today; a full-on, 94-minute man.
-
there are going to be games like this during the season where we steal a point when we shouldn't. There will also be games like many last season where we throw away a late lead having played well and not taken our chances. I'll take today, count my lucky stars, embrace the point and hopefully play better next week at home to Newcastle.
-
Still unbeaten after five games and a decent point against an Everton side that were fired up for today and should have won comfortably.
I am sure I felt much worse last season so Big Eck and the players must be doing something right so far
-
Sadly only heard snippets on (sadly...) WM due to junior Pablo's rugby commitments, but on hearing Gabby's equalizer, Paul Frank's quite validily said 'Gabby - he is a striker you know...' - that's 2 decent goals already this term, so I think our formation is in need of a reshuffle.
-
I was just relieved we got a draw out of this nice one Gabby you have made my weekend a bit better.
-
Got to get Bent some support up front, i.e. Gabby, don't like this formation at all. Very lucky to get anything out of this, hopefully AM will change the formation n play two up top.
-
watched the game on a good stream-listening to WM on the radio
I voted for a draw in the pre match thing so I knew it would end up a draw -even while watching it
my Brother was going mad (at the villa for being a bit crap)-but I was a picture of nonchalance -as if the draw was pre destined-I kept saying "don't worry, this is a nailed on draw" even when we were 2-1 down
strange
-
Great fight back fantastic character shown by the team. Tough place to go so delighted with a point.
From reading the thread it appears we got this result despite McLeish not because of .....
-
My pre-season decision to put cash on a draw for every league game we play is proving very fruitful.
-
First half we were very poor with our midfield being overrun. Fellaini seemed to be everywhere and we were lucky that we were only down a goal at HT.
Second Half we showed a little improvement, barely, and Petrov's goal seemed to boost us. Dunne and Given were impressive. Hutton seems to play a little high up the park on the right and probably needs to work on fitness and training with the defence at BMH before the Toons come to town.
We were beaten too often by players like Coleman and Bilyaletdinov and Fellaini and Osman were a constant threat going forward. Luckily Dunne was back to his heroics shown in midweek and he and Collins did just enough to keep us in the game.
Delph's giving away a penalty won't do much for his confidence. Albrighton's cross for Gabby's goal will do much for theirs.
Bannan's substitution for Heskey will have many clamouring for Bannan to start against the Toons. Ireland's brief cameo's this season are showing promise that he may be finding his way back to the player he was three seasons ago.
There is no doubt in my mind that Bent's groin injury is hampering him. N'Zogbia's touch and fitness aren't quite there yet and it is possible that with Bent's timing off the two of them looked out of synch. That will improve as the season wears on.
For me, stealing a point at Everton is great and my Villa cup is still half full.
-
Our lack of movement is dreadful and that has to begun with the players in the middle of the park. Whilst we're playing Petrov and Delph together in the middle it isn't going to change i'm afraid especially as they both appear to have a defensive role in the team. Physically they couldn't match Rodwell and Feillani either. Bent clearly needs some support and we have to play Gabby more orthodox up front and then leave out Heskey and play a more orthodox 4-4-2. McLeish then needs to decide on what to do with his midfield. Recall Albrighton? Bring in Jenas? Ireland?
Some tough decisions for McLeish to make I feel - as today we got a point and deserved nothing.
-
We do seem to be defending from the front. Things must be bad if Petrov had to push forward and have a slap because of our lack of invention. That also blows my prediction that we would probably never see Petrov score again in this new formation.
-
Very lucky the ref didn't punish Wee Barry for bringing down Baines in the area. That was a definitely a pen.
We were very fortunate to get a point today. I'm glad to see Given and Dunne kept up their performance levels that they displayed in Moscow during the week. Keep it up boys because we are going to need that level of performance every week.
-

On Warnock, I have not see any of the game from today but have seen the other 3 this season, and the man is a complete liability of a defender. Dives in, often out of position and whinges like there is no tomorrow. Sooner we are shot of him the better, I really hope Edna is the business in Jan!
-

I think the ref would've gave it if Baines had'nt gone down in about 7 different stages.

There is something about me and my mates going to Everton. After all of us being thrown out last year, my mate after the game basically got shoulder barged to the floor for no reason. Luckily for the bloke our mate was behind us on his own and the other eight of us didnt see it straight away. The old bill to be fair were straight on top of him and did come over and say that his season ticket has been took off him and do we want to make a complaint. My mate said he cant be arsed. It was my 12th time to Everton today and iv had aggro pretty much everytime iv been there.
-
Looked like two very well-taken goals we scored. Stuart Hall's summaries made them sound like a fluke and a Crazy-Gang style toepoke. The useless old lush.
-
Just goes to show, if you lump the ball into the opposition penalty area, you might score. Take note Mr eck
-
Petrov was woeful and looked miles off the pace. A total passenger. I feel for Delph; he needs someone to help him out, he's too inexperienced to be filling in for Petrov as one of a midfield 2.
Heskey off, Bannan on. YES I thought. Now we'll see some football. Nope, stick him wide right. Unbelievable. The kid is flying, play him somewhere his vision and ability will be useful. All he lacks is pace, so why put him wide right? Infuriating!
-
Er, Bannan was put into the centre where there was a complete mismatch in terms of height with Fellaini. It was only when he went wide that he improved.
-

Absolutely don't agree, mate. IMO Dunne has returned to be the average player that he's always been, he's probably the most error prone player in the world. Did you see the way he conceded the first goal to Osman completetly unmarked? It was comic.
-
If the 'vertically challenged' Bannan and Delph both play in the midfield, then they are going to get utterly dominated in the air. Fab in particular was Fellaini's bitch all afternoon yesterday.
To compensate, we'd need to play Magic Johnson just behind them.

Sorry Archie but you've got that badly wrong. Dunne had a stormer yesterday, without him and Given we'd have lost the game. It was good movement by Osman and Cahill that created the first goal.

My vision is different Chris. Maybe he played well the rest of the game, that's typical of Dunne after making a crucial error, but in occasion of the goal he kept to follow Osman, then he "forgot" to stop whereas Osman simply stopped and had all the time to control the ball and shoot absolutely unmarked. And we are talking about Osman, not Leo Messi.

Initially it looked like Cahill was going towards the touchline for a pull back and Dunne turned for that so was wrong footed and couldn't react in time. As with any goal conceded there are things that might have been improved on but to call it a "crucial error" is extremely harsh.

Archie, I think you need to get over your issues with Dunne. He had a great game yesterday. I take it you didn't see any of the Ireland game midweek v Russia.
His perfromance was even lauded by Paul McGrath as being one of the best he had ever seen.
Dunne was gash last season but he was not alone in that was he ?
He didn't make the Premier League team of the season the previous season for nothing.
-
You should be a good lawyer Chris, no doubt about this.
Your analysis is very deep and accurate. But the fact is that we have two different ideas of the defensive play.
My referring points are players like Nesta, Thiago Silva, Paul Mc Grath, etc. The wages of Dunne are so high that he should be compared to these legends.
Well, he is miles away from them.
He is not able to build from the back, he's only capable to belt the ball clear (a pre-historic style of football), he is overrated and overpaid, and, I don't know if you agree at least on this point, he's the most errorv prone player of the Premier League..

Titus Bramble, Jamie Carragher ?

Yes it's true Ger, a true legend like Paul Mc Grath declared to appreciate Dunne.
Obviously I have read it.
He may have played a great game against Russia, but I remain of my opinion because I have a different vision! The world would be so boring if everyone had the same vision, wouldn't it be? :-)

I don't think you came blame Dunne for their first goal really, it was a clever bit of play from Cahill.
I'm glad we showed character to come back from behind twice, even if it was'nt one of our better perfomances. I thought Fellani was very good for them as well.
Overall, a good point in a game we could and probably should have lost. 3 points next week and it'll be a solid start for us.

Good point.... Again...
Our performance was very worrying, but at least he made changes to try and win the game.
I'm up for either Starting Bannan in place of Heskey or Switching to a 442 with Marc Albrighton in for Heskey.

I agree that it was a good movement by Osman and Cahill that created the first goal. Osman just placed his shot perfectly. I doubt that any gk would have saved that goal. There might be an argument that Collins was drawn away from position by Cahill's movement to the right. As Osman found position Dunne moved back to cover a gaping hole that was left by Coillins marking Cahill. Dunne was stuck in no mans land because he was also covering back to block off any potential ball to the left of the goal to either Osman or Bilyaletdinov who was in the process of starting a run to the far post with Alan Hutton a couple of yards off his man.
.
Once Dunne was committed to the cover there was little he could do about Osman's shot. Neither he or Hutton were in a position to have stopped Osman's shot. I wouldn't fault Dunne or Hutton. Cahill's movement with the ball was very good and his pass to Osman was perfect. Sometimes a ball is unplayable by the defence, not because of poor defending but awesome attacking work . Kudos to Everton on that one. It was a great goal.
-
Although lucky we deserved something for the fight shown in the second half. I think N'Zogbia needs a few more games to show his undoubted ability - I think it does take time to settle in (Milner and Downing took time) - some posters on these boards can't see that and are quick to write payers of if they don't perform 8/9 out of 10 every week. Charlie will come good soon. Definitely start with Bannan and drop Heskey next match. I can't understand why AM leaves Ciaran Clark out - he was excellent last season, one of our brightest hopes - I would start him ahead of Delph at the moment.
-
Just seen the goals and I have to say that after last year's dive over a non-existent Makoun challenge. I think we were stitched up by Jagielka for a penalty the second time in two seasons. For me Delph clearly has his eyes on the ball and makes a jump for it, and Jagielka runs into him and then falls over like he's been shot. If anything it was a foul on Delph for dangerous play, Jagielka having taken him out mid air. Maybe the ref was making amends for the Bannan penalty incident which I haven't seen.
After the promise of much better football under GH, it does sound like, as expected, we are becoming a very dull, negative and predictable team under Eck, and I'm still waiting for his "horses for courses" philosophy to start. So far it's like MON without the "flair".
At least we don;t seem to give up easily, so that's something I suppose.

The problem was that Delph jumped much too early, the ball was still 20 foot in the air so he was putting himself in a position where any contact would be deemed a foul.
-
I must say, for an all round 'proper' footballing team, the Everton team don't half dive a lot.
-
No complaints from me about the penalty , Delph was careless and made contact with the player, Everton fans really do put pressure on the refs but i thought the ref had a decent enough game.
Surprised anyone could criticise Dunne yesterday -i thought he was excellent.

Agreed. If anything, from the bits I managed to watch online he seemed to give us most of the 50/50 decisions. And I think the Bannan challenge should have been a penalty as well.

The second Delph leaped into the air, a penalty was the only possible outcome. It was completely brainless. Hopefully he'll learn.
-

I put it in quotation marks to signify sarcasm.
Doesn't matter how early Delph jumped, Jagielka still ran towards him and caused the collision. Delph had his eyes on the ball and didn't jump into Jagielka, Jagielka barged into him. I don't see how Delph could have moved in mid air to cause the collision unless he was wearing a jet pack.

He was a total c**t.
-
Well, it wasn't a good showing, was it? We were ditre in the 1st half and not much better in the 2nd, with the exception that after the break we at least did seem to be trying harder. Both fullbacks and Delph were poor, plus Bent didn't look fit, and the ability of one or two players got us out of a hole. Under AM so far we've been pretty solid and that was the first time we looked 'easy to beat' - and hopefully the last aswell.
Plus points were the form of Dunne and Given plus we showed a bit of character. I always think a point away in the PL is not to be scoffed at, but it's hard to take positives from that.
-
Not a bad result considering we were the 2nd best side in the first half, great goal from Stan and a nice finish from Gabby!
