I'll tell you something. If Ash doesn't want to stay he has a funny way of showing it. I thought he was back to his absolute best today. He gives everything to the team and when he dips below what we know he is capable of it's frustrating. But nobody should ever question his commitment.

Well done Houllier, tactics spot on.

Tough one to give MOTM. Despite my slating Ash had a fantastic 2nd Half. Defense was awesome. I think Collins gets MOTM. Awesome throughout.

Well played!

Good to see our team back to entertain style again.
Our connection is much better.

Finally good to see Gabby's Goal again after wait for long time.

Finally we need to tune a bid on the defender when we have to deal with the fast forward.

Is that the first time all season we've won a game after going behind?

Thought we were excellent second half but was starting to brick it when we weren't putting chances away. Credit to Houllier for making the right change. And on that performance Ash must have put his price up by a few million. Best he's played all season for me

He's scored at Man U, Anfield, Stamford Bridge, Arsenal, and virtually every local derby he's ever played in. Was there any doubt who'd score the most important goal of the season?

And yet there are some absolute know-nothing fucking clowns down the Villa who will still say he's rubbish.

40 points with 3 home games left. I think we can all breathe a big sigh of relief. When you consider Blackpool are mentally gone, Blackburn, Wolves, West Ham, Sunderland all in a lot of bother and even Wigan despite an excellent win today, we'll be ok.

The only down side was a poor outing for Heskey, otherwise a decent showing but we could've made it so much easier. Similar to Bolton, but better at the back in the second half.

I thought Bent was outstanding and looks good value at the moment, long may it continue.

40 points achieved, 3 more from 5 games to be sure with Wigan winning away, should be safe I reckon.
Considering the chances, considering how much better we were, considering another good goal disallowed, 1-2 a great result.
Well done all of them.

I can tell you, that we should have by 6 or 7. The score at minimum should be 3-1, because Bent also scored another perfectly good headed goal. The defence, aside from the odd heart in mouth moment were very good. Finally thank Paul McGrath they have Carlton Cole up front. He is well and truly mince.

Great performance, Bent's best game for us, ash at the top of his game, downing superb, walker and young fantastic is defence and attack, collins back to his form when he arrived and nige and stan bossed the middle of the park.

The only negatives were a couple of mistakes from Dunne, some scary moments moments from brad and heskey looking like a player who hasn't played for a few months, but none of them were major and the little luck we got was more than deserved.

He did. We knocked the ball around very well all day Lizz. That's one big thing he has brought to the club. We all know the defence remains the issue, but there are some shoots of hope. I expect there will be massive surgery to the club in the summer, and I for one cannot wait for the transfer window to start.

that's a good point Dan. That despite the early setback we were able to get back into the game and completely dominate it. That for me is a big change in the mentality of the club. Something Houllier suggested was lacking when he joined. This will give all the players and staff, as well as us, a massive boost for the run in.

My reaction when I saw Gabby had scored in the last minute...

I'm thrilled to bits. We win again, Bent scores again, Gabby pops up in the last minute and scores again and from what I've heard we battered them in the 2nd half so it's go to see we've finally been rewarded for boning a team.

Lets see if we can catch Bolton now!

My reaction when I saw Gabby had scored in the last minute...

I'm thrilled to bits. We win again, Bent scores again, Gabby pops up in the last minute and scores again and from what I've heard we battered them in the 2nd half so it's go to see we've finally been rewarded for boning a team.

Lets see if we can catch Bolton now!

he's at a New Jersey Nets basketball game and he's just seen the arrival of the pie vendor.

We still need 10 pts to be absolutely safe.

Or only 9 if we beat Wigan.

But we could be safe after the Baggies game if results go our way.

We could still catch Spurs!

BUT GABBY'S LATE GOAL HAS MADE A VERY BIG DIFFERENCE AND THE PRESSURE IS EASING.

I had it all worked out a couple of weeks back, with a little help from BBC predictor.

We finish 6th, Small Heath get the bums rush from UEFA, we take their place and trash Rapid Vienna in the final.

It would be incredibly funny if we finish 6th and steal their place in Europe.

GH has a reputation for bringing through kids, and I don't think he put them in the side by choice. Our injuries at the time had just killed us. They will all play a part in our future which is why he locked them all up to long term deals. But they are better off on loan getting proper experience away from the pressures of a relegation battle, and allowing the seniors to get us out of this. It's good management by GH.

Needs must. We need experience for the job at hand, especially at the back. This categorically does not mean dross like dunne will be here next year or that the kids have had their chance. Hopefully they will be introduced gradually alongside some quality new signings they can learn off, which is what should have happened all along.

Amazing how quickly things can change. Similar season this to the one when Sir Brian left and John Gregory came in. We were one step forward two steps back and then finished the season on a decent run of form finishing in the top half. This season it doesnt seem like it will take anywhere near as many points to do the same so lets hope the results continue.

At last I can remove the adult diaper.  We are out of the woods.

Today we dominated West Ham and should have won at a canter.  Our attacking play just keeps on improving - and the way we move the ball in the opponents half is top class.

Let's not kid ourselves though - everytime they got a set piece near our goal the defence looked shaky.  Collins gave it some today - full of committment - but he's still a big lump.  Dunne looked less of a big lump than usual but it's too late for the Atkins Diet mate.

If we get our defence re-built anything like as good as our attack - roll on next season.  DB - what a buy.

4-4-2 fits this fomation much more than 4-2-3-1, finally even GH understood this.

First game I've actually looked forward to for a while - so I thought we'd probably be nailed on to lose. Worst possible opening, but showed character to come back.

There was a nervousness about West Ham, you can tell they really know they're in the shit. But then so were we, going into the Everton game. Probably for the last three, truth be told. This one a bit less so.

But had we ditched GH after the Wolves game and the new bloke came in and delivered two wins and a draw we'd be hailing him as a saviour, so it's only right that GH takes credit for our upturn in form since then. It doesn't make up for a lot of the stuff that's gone on this year, but we can park the manager issue at least until the summer now and hopefully finish the season in relative comfort.

I bet Bent is chuffed to see the table at the moment. Steve Bruce, Emily Bishop's son and Robbie Savage probably less so.

Yeah...but it's not quite the same. We won 9 out of our last 11 league games when Gregory came in and played, as I've said on here before, the best football over a consistent period of games between then and now. Two wins in a row isn't exactly up there but it's a start.

I don't think we can qualify for Europe unless Blose get booted.

We can get a maximum of 55 points, Spurs in fifth have 53 and 6 games left. So no chance from the league.

Blouse got a place from the league cup, thanks to Arsenal's shambolic defending.

Either Stoke or Bolton will get a place from the FA cup.

Thoroughly deserved victory, but West Ham were dire. However, the team were up for it, even GH looked up for it and seemed as if he cared whether we won or not. It's naive to believe that everything is rosy, but it seems that the team and the staff have managed to agree to put differences aside and fight together for the greater good -- at least until the end of the season.

If Man City win the FA Cup & finish fifth, which takes precedence. Or more to the point, as the Europa League will have the FA Cup winners already will they also take the runners up or will it be a league place?

The main thing is we're near enough safe and to the snidey little twerp who tried to ruin our season before it had started, fuck you and the longball hoofy horse you rode in on. Still, there's always the job of getting west ham out of the championship - i'm sure its yours if you want it

As for GH, he's earned the right to have another go, but no excuses next season. if the reserves aren't good enough to fill in for injuries - buy new ones. If there's players causing problems - sell them this summer. Bottom line is we expect a significant improvement come this time next year.

I agree with most of what you'd said there Greg. However, while we all expect more next season, if he's building something then surely the important thing is see improvement and more importantly consistency. That he creates a base from which to build. Yes, get rid of all of the crap that have no future, but there will also be a period at the start where the new players bed in. I hope we show a collective patience as they come together.

yeah I don't expect we'll see "his" team next season but i want a few more of the existing players showing they can adapt to playing his style at least. we've flirted with relegation this season and I don't expect us to next

Just got back from watching the game behind enemy lines in the West Ham end. Thought we dominated the game for an hour, typical Villa, shouldve made it a lot easier, though Green made three good saves in the second half.

Well done to the away folk,i could hear you all game from the opposite end of the ground, was suprised by the silence of Upton Park, was expecting it to be more hostile. Thought Collins,Nrc and Downing were great today,Up The Villa.

Just got in. Ash, walker and Collins were superb, we were terrible first 20 minutes but came out like a team possessed in the second half, there were times when I thought they'd sneak it when we lost momentum but very well deserved win.

The celebration at the end felt like we'd won a trophy, I could get used the excitement of a relegation battle every year.

Annoys me this. As I said much earlier: Go and have a pint and enjoy the day. The last thing we all need is negative sentiment today. It was a good performance, with passion and intent and even if it was the old guard they worked for each other. Add Bent and it looked very good.

I am not a GH fan either, not yet anyway,  but today it simply does not matter. I think we are safe and I think we have found our fight.

Enough for me. Quite happy thanks.

Nothing wrong with Bent's first "goal". We were cheated out of that. It would have changed the game too. When it went in I thought we were on a hat load. Linesman was happy as well. Still. Three points.

Now we just need to score six or seven somewhere to get that bloody goal difference sorted.

Where?

Be my guest, I deserve it!

Today has made me realise that the striking department is probably the last area we need to address this summer. If we have the money it would be nice to get another top quality player in or if GH can pull off an audacious deal like Benzema on loan for a year, but rebuilding the defence and getting a top notch DM & AM should take priority!

Great day! Freshly-made pancakes for breakfast, a light lunch then a 2 hour walk along the "Canal de Perpignan" with she who must be obeyed. Back for a Villa win then out to see "We want Sex Equality" (or, "Made in Dagenham", to give it its English title), in English. Then it was off to "Chez Turkmen" in Perpignan for some Raki, Turkish red and various Turkish fare. Then, back to château BE for a glass or two of red and a nice malt to finish.

Good job Young got that lovely cross over for Gabby because I was giving him the wankers all through the game for dawdling on the post for the first goal.

And I had the strange pleasure of indirectly keeping Villa fan Walsall manager Dean Smith updated on our fortunes via text message during their 3-1 defeat to Brighton today... as erstwhile H&V poster IanB was sitting next to him.

Great day out, apart from the traffic which meant I left here at 8.25 this morning and only got back at 11.25 tonight. Well worth it though, apart from locking myself in the khazi at Newport Pagnell and having to use my car key to unscrew two screws in order to remove the bolt to get out!!

Thought Stan and NRC in central midfield was a good choice by Houllier; we really do seem a better team with Petrov and I'm so glad to see he's proved some doubters on here wrong over the past couple of matches.

Not been a great fan of AY's this season - largely due to his petulance - but that was a first class performance, in particular the build up to Gabby's goal.

Some great linking up between Walker and Downing.

45 years to the day since my first Villa match - 2-1 win at home to Burnley on 16/04/66; good to get the same result against another claret & blue team.

Have just watched the whole game, delayed coverage.

We looked very good in patches today and should have won by a hatful of goals, but for once instead of conceding a late goal we got one. Life is sweet today  8)

Thought Ash, Luke and the Ginga Ninja were excellent today, with Downing and Bent playing very well also. Reo Coker still needs to work on his distribution, which was terrible at times, but no faulting his commitment.

Bye, bye Kit Stealers, enjoy Barnsley next year. Looks like Blackpool may join you.

I really think that the personality arm wrestle going on behind the scenes has finally been won by GH.  The desire was pretty evident from the team and I saw real passion from GH and GMac when Gabby scored.  I'd absolutely love this to be the start of a winning run till the end of the season.  I'd love to see us win 4 out of the remaining five... I think it is doable if we can maintain the spirit...  I don't think a draw or even a win at arsenal is out of the question considering how hot and cold they have been all season.

I see it differently. We've reverted to 442. We're

It will be interesting to see how things get
blended in the summer. We need quite a lot of

NRC, downing, friedel, walker, etc. And we
certainly won't keep some of them. And downing apart, we wouldn't get full value for any of them either. We'll need some of the kids to really push on next year I think. Delph and Clark in particular.

Well what a strange occurrance.

We have been absolutely abysmal all year, and here we are in 9th place, and with a real possibility of getting in the 50's points wise.

If , after the turmoil at the start, if you had offerred a top 10 finish, and 50+ points - I'd have took it, and I bet many others would.

Strange

Yesterday.

We started appallingly, the defence was all over the shop for 25 mins. We then started to settle, had a clear goal ruled out, got the first and never looked back. I think we had settled for a point, which would have been acceptable, but got the bonus at the end.

Bent is absolutely amazing. I just wonder where we would have been if we had bought him when we should have, instead of buying Heskey. His movement is on a par with the very best. Have a look when Downing was running through and crossed (Green saved) but Bent lost two markers on the back post.

If we get the defence sorted - we are in for  a VERY good year next year - no matter who is in charge.

I thought we looked panicky in defence against a very poor WH forward set up. Was convinced they would steal a late winner even though by that time  they were very poor.
Midfield is still a major problem and we need a quality central defender, but we do finally have one of the best centre forwards in the game, what i like about Bent is even when he misses an easy chance he doesn't let it affect him, he just goes about his business.

Very good performance yesterday. I hate excuses made re injruies etc.. when we were missing a few so tough shit in the last 3 games to the teams we played - it happens to everyone. Agree more with the latter comments. No more stupid 4-4-1-1 system (all the negatives of 4-5-1 without the positives of 4-3-3) and with Ash being wasted 'in the hole'. Put wingers on the wing, more experienced and organsied defence and midfield. Oh and some support for Bent. No coincidence Dunne, Collins, L Young, NRC and Petrov coming back has given us a better backbone. And team spirit is all well and good but it NO substitute for team work. Personally I don't care whether the players have love-ins in showers after the game or hate each others guts provided they work together professionally.

When Agbonlahor came on yesterday Houllier finally stumbled on possibly the lineup most fans have wanted for a while and all it needed was to swap Ashley Young and Gabby into their best positions.  I guess Ashley Young has been playing as a second striker because he wanted to but it has not succeeded and yesterday when he reverted to the wings he was sensational as he has been for England recently. Where would we be if he hadn't got his way all season?
Now we have two strikers with two good subs in that position and two wingers with Albrighton champing at the bit to get in as a sub.  We have a choice in midfield and at centre back and only perhaps the full back pool needs strengthening.  We do need a first clas goalkeeper to replace Friedel.

2. Loved Pornodwarf's black leather gloves

3. Hitzlesperger is still a very ordinary player - both him and Noble aint half shored up by Parker

4. Imagine West Ham rattling round in that Olympic stadium next year with about 25K fans

The finest display of football I have seen from this side this season was the 2 - 2 Man Utd home game and that included several kids. Of course the experienced players bring more assurance but lets not assume everything is great because the kids are out of the picture.
I dont think they would have had so much football if injuries hadn't dictated but the fact is they've had good exposure this season and the ones that make it will benefit greatly from it. As will Villa as a result.
They'll figure more and be even better next season.

We have been absolutely abysmal all year

West Ham 3-1?  Man Utd 2-2?  Chelsea 3-3?  Man City 1-0?  Blackburn 4-1?  Abysmal?

Yesterday the fans have been great, as usual, by far the best in the PL.
And the Bells are Ringing campaign worked, well done lads.

Apart from this I don't feel so enthusiast, I can't understand how opinions can change completely from a week to another.
Yes we have made 2 wins in a row, I'm obviously very very happy for this, and I'm also relieved because we have probably avoided relegation, but at the end we have only beaten two average teams, that should be normal for a big club, as we are a big club, that gives 4 players to the National team.
West Ham is at the bottom of the table, and last August we had "hammered"  ;) them 3-0  under the caretaker manager Kevin Mc Donald.

And still we were risking to lose with such an average team, courtesy of an incredible blunder  of Richard Dunne (the most error-prone player in the world second only to Titus Bramble) that at minute 85 left completely unmarked Carlton Cole in the box.
Any "normal" striker would have scored without effort and we'd be here to comment a defeat.

Bent is absolutely amazing. I just wonder where we would have been if we had bought him when we should have, instead of buying Heskey. His movement is on a par with the very best. Have a look when Downing was running through and crossed (Green saved) but Bent lost two markers on the back post.

I read an article re Bent before the last England matches when Capello said that his movement had improved dramatically since he had joined the Villa and Bent was quoted as saying that GH had taught him a lot re movement since being at VP.

I think he does (Bent partner). Yesterday Heskey took lot of attention that left him to play like he did. His best game for us and  when Gabby came on  and played in the right place for a change Gabby was able to profit from WH being over attentive to Darren.

Went to West Ham yesterday. Missed the  their goal as we had to go around about 3 housing estates to get to away end.

I thought we were very good. Petrov was class and  completely over powered their  midfield. Ash playing wide was brilliant especially when he stayed on his feet. Any result other than a win for us would have been a complete injustice. We deserved this injury time winner because players had belief that we  could win it and kept attacking with purpose and vigour.

When my younger son had the job of producing a football series following a youth team naturally the first place he went was VP.

HDE made such demands to be the star of the show the programme was made about the Ipswich youth team.

I asked my son, as you do, is there anybody there who is any good who Villa can nick.   His reply was that there was a kid called Bent who was good and in fact with whom he had become quite good friends and remains so, I believe, to the present time.

Right name.  Wrong Bent.

Not sure if they are empowered to make decisions that far out as their brief is the area and particularly 6 yard box.
Luke I don't think they are entirely useless as shirt pulling and arm around the waist  has almost disappeared from the CL and EL games of late.

Definite foul on Cole. But no worse than the foul on Bent against Everton, which was in the box. Anyway Bents "other goal" was a terrible decision. The linesman who was in a much better position gave nothing, Bent totally out jumped the defender and it was a top class finish. Ashley Youngs best game this season and where was he playing ? yes on the wing .......

I think the ref would have given Bent's first ''goal'' if the earlier incident hadn't have happened. Then again, as Percy pointed out, the space-time continuum/butterfly theory/serendipity at play means that Bent wouldn't have got that chance if the ref had ruled a foul on Dunne earlier, thus altering the course of rest of the game and indeed, humanity.

I think you are referring to cause and effect.  By the same token, there is a distinct possibility that even down to 10 men we could have gone on to win the game by a bigger margin.  We will never know.

I'm not too worried about the Dunne challenge. Jagielka conned us out of three points a few weeks ago which would have seen us safe by now and Bent's first should have stood so i'll take the bit of luck we got quite happily.

As for the game, we were iffy for the first twenty off minutes, got the equaliser and like the last few away games, came flying out of the traps in the second half. The fans again were superb and i've not celebrated a winner like that for a long time.

Agree with you clampy but to be honest, and I think I speak for all I don't really care. The Dunne decision went our way and luck evening ittself or not that's all I really care about. Surprised Hesket hasn,t got as many plaudits as he should have. He was poor first 20 minutes but when were playing well he was at the heart of everyhting setting up the attacks by winning header after header from keeper/defenders. at one corner he won the header against two West Ham defenders which flashed across goal and Bent hadn't gambled.

When Heskey went off he got a deserving applause as everyone recognised his performance. after that for 10 or 15 minutes our attack clearly missed him as were very rarely winning flick-ons and the high ball. Luckily, well only in a sense of relief  way, we scored a great second. Credit to the players (Young was brilliant, Collins superb, Downing at his best, Walker absolutely killing them down the right whilst Luke Young was always defending well or supporting the attack, I could go on.) but I think this game shouldn't pass without Heskey's contribution getting the praise it fully deserves.

I said something similar to my mate next to me at the time. I would have left him on a bit longer than we did. We did'nt seem to keep the ball as well when he went off. Luckily it turned out ok, and i'd start him against Stoke at the Weekend.

I went to West Ham on Saturday and I can see why they want to move. It's a right dive. It didn't even have numbers on the seats as they'd worn away.

They're in big trouble now, with Man City and Chelsea away as their next 2 games.

Then they have 3 winnable games, 3 cup finals
The Dunne challenge for me was shoulder to shoulder, nothing in it

The Dunne challenge was no worse than Taylors on Bent the week before in the penalty box and we got nothing for that.  There weren't any pundits saying that should have been a sending off.

The one on Bent was a penalty, but not a sending off. As for the Dunne challenge, it was a foul and red card. Cole had got in front of him and he pushed him with his fore arm. As it happens though, I couldn't care less! We were robbed at Everton, had a goal disallowed against the toon and there was nothing wrong with Bent's goal on saturday. You win some, you lose some.

Agree.
Dunne was absolute a disgrace, as usual: he was asleep in occasion of the 1st goal (even if it was AJ7 to make the biggest error), he committed a foul that should be sanctioned with a red card , and - icing on the cake -  at 85° left Carlton Cole completely unmarked, a normal striker would have scored without effort and we would be talking about a defeat.
The highlights will confirm his awful performance:

Dunne was an absolute disgrace? Wow. What game were you watching again? He made an error letting Cole in for the shot, and it wasn't his fault at all for the first. He got lucky no doubt with the foul, but we've had so much shit luck all season on a number of levels, so we're due a bit. I'll concede he wasn't brilliant, but a disgrace?? Really?

Back off! I saw him first.

I thought Carlton Cole was your man? You're such a tart, Mazrim.

O.K that's the second time you've mentioned him in relation to me. Why?

He was on your summer transfer target list and for the life of me, I couldn't understand why. Even the West Ham fans refer to him as CFC.
At least you're in good company with LeeB. Nutters the pair of you.

Like I said, he was somebody I thought MON would try and sign, not somebody I really wanted to.

Yes mate, and if you admit that he did at least two blunders that could cost us the defeat against an average team, how long will it take to you to consider him a disgrace? :-)

Apart from the jokes, it's quite clear that in Italy we have a different vision of the role of a CB, that in our opinion should try to build from the back (like Nesta or Paolo Maldini) instead of limiting to belt the ball clear like Dunne does.
Apart from this, he is the most error prone defender in the world after Titus Bramble.
He uses to concede three or four occasions every game.
It's not by chance if we never keep a clean sheet.

I don't know how can people not to understand how an average player he is....

Agree with archie. You don't have to play two centre halves who are confident on the ball but you need one at least. Dunne's worse than collins so get rid if we can find anyone mad enough to take him

Dunne has looked like an accident waiting to happen all season, with the difference that the last few games, the accident hasn't actually happened. He was pretty lucky to get away with it on Saturday.

I think "disgrace" is a bit harsh, but he's one of the players who have really let us down this season, and one we should be looking to move on. Just imagine if he'd managed to do the very least you expect from a professional footballer and not come back from the summer overweight and mardy. Maybe he'd have put in the kind of performances he did last season. He didn't though.

I'll be absolutely amazed if he's here next season, and not at Wigan or similar.

but he wasn't a disgrace in this game which is what is being suggested. Has he been throughout the season - absolutely. I'd be nuts to defend him. I fully expect he'll be shown the door at the first opportunity.

Do not feel confident with Dunne anymore. Collins was outstanding, won almost every aerial battle. He was not a "disgrace" though. Need a young quicker more athletic CB with Collins. Ciaran Clarke ? .......

Dunne is not playing well but his experience gets him through most situations. Compared to last season though, he is a liability. I've no doubt he'll be gone in the summer so "enjoy" him for the last few matches of his Villa career, which is now basically about putting himself in the shop window.

Clark will be ready to go next season. He might not start depending on what Houllier does in the summer but he'll have learned so much after his displays at centre half, left back and defensive midfield and will be one or two steps closer to the top centre half I believe he will be.

I agree, I think in the off season Clark will get on Gabby's weight training program and add strength to his all round game so he has another string on his bow against premiership strikers.
