Assuming Luke is genuinely fit I think that's the right side.

Will that be a Clark / Baker centre-half pairing then?
Could be trouble, or it could be the start of a beautiful relationship.

Thats the team i hoped for, although i had Herd because i didnt know L young was fit.

Im happy with that team and think we could get a result here.

That's about the best team we could put out, with the exception of Makoun, and I think it's pretty good.

Best of luck to our new centre-half partnership!

Think that's about as good a team as we could hope for given the injuries - who's on the bench?

Interesting team, i would love them to go and get 3 points just to ease us away from that bottom 3. Good luck to the centre backs though, massive day for them, and whatever the result I am sure they will do us proud.

Subs: Pires, Marshall, Bradley, Agbonlahor, Heskey, Petrov, Herd.

As strong a line up as we can put out and all of them potentially playing in their strongest position! Come on Villa!

Luke Young has played a few games at CB, just wondering if he might put him in the middle and Baker at LB just due  to his experience.

Obviously the defence picking itself could be a worry.
Ciaran Clark needs to put one on Kevin Davies early on.

Big game for a few of them. Looking forward to seeing Delph as I thought he looked tidy on Wednesday and not without some skill. good luck to whoever is marking Davies and it'll be difficult against Sturridge seeing the pace he has and the form that he is. So, I'm nervous by the back line - but that has been the same all season to be fair - and excited by the attacking options.

Not worried by Bent being a bit off form, he will come back into form and smack in 10-12 in a run of games, just a simple striker thing.

So are we playing Young at centre back? What is the formation at the back?

Shocking miss by Bent.

No Barry Bannan, is he injured? I thought he played well against Man City. Glad to see Delph playing, another highlight (one of the very few) from the Citeh game.

I don't get Bolton

Every time we play them, regardless of the manager being Coyle or Megson, they seem to insist on playing a dodgy high line and the offside trap. I'd have thought playing like that against sides with pace up front is asking for it.

The defence must be the only priority this summer. The rest of the side are good, maybe a striker light but not if we play this system. Keeper is the biggest problem. Never comes for anything which means always under pressure, no communication and just poor. Need a centre back that organises and a defence coach! GH at Liverpool had a top defence, mainly down to Hypia. We need something like that to defend set pieces. Someone who just attacks the ball like a mad man!

Im not so sure I would blame Friedel for that goal at all. Its a close range header due to poor defensive cover, and it comes at him mid way body height. Probably the most difficult place for a keeper to get himself to for a reaction save.

That was expected wasn't it - I can only think of man City as our only clean sheet, could be wrong, but not by much - we were always going to concede.

Well gerarg better pray he gets out of this, because if he doesn't - I think his bridges will be burnt.

i am not sure if you can put that down to friedel, but he dosent seem to ever come for the ball at corners

This is true, we need a keeper who is happy to take forwards and defenders with him to claim the ball.

Flappy Friedel is a liability in almost every away game and quite a few home ones too, although I'm not sure I'd blame him for that one.

Failing to capitalise on dominance and then conceding goals to added time set pieces is becoming almost a ritual. Blackpool all over again.  GET A FUCKING DEFENSIVE COACH HOULLIER.

Till we sort out our shambolic defending, we'll be doomed to always struggle.

It's such a shame, we're capable of playing some really good stuff further up field, but we're just clueless at defending set pieces.

Yep, it would be interesting to see what percentage of our goals against come from set pieces. So much else about the way we play is positive but it makes us a soft touch. Not surprising today given we have 3 centre haves injured but it has been the same all season.

Oh for another Martin Laursen!

Eh? A header from inside the six yard box into the corner?
If you can save them then get yerself to Bodymoor on Monday and show them!

The fault lay with nobody putting a strong challenge in on Cahill.

Any ball that goes that close to the goalkeeper, should be claimed by the goalkeeper. Friedel has no command of his area and stands like a statue at set pieces.

No players on posts which comes from the manager. As for poor marking you can copach until you're blue in the face but if players don't do it in a game, there's little the manager can say or do.

We have played some really good football at times in that first half and on the balance of play should be ahead at the break. Ashley Young looks very sharp as does Albrighton and Walker. Ive been happy with Reo Coker again too. At the back Young has been excellent as has Clark. Baker has made a few mistakes including the goal and we need more from Delph. Bent missed a sitter and scored one. Its what he does.

The biggest worry in that half was Friedel who looks these days to have lead in his boots. This is a day when we need a keeper to dominate in the air but that was never his strongest point.

As the first half has shown it can be difficult to defend against the wind. I always preferred to play into the wind, with the wind it can be difficult to keep the ball in play.

Big half for us ahead. There looks sure to be more goals, Wheater and Robinson are having mares for Bolton. Holden though has come into the game while Davies is always dangerous.

I think it was Patrice Bergues who was Houllier's defensive coach in his best spell at Liverpool, and I think worked with him at Lyon, too.

He tried to get him to join Villa, but he opted not to. Maybe he'll try again in the summer.

The manager can affect many aspects through coaching, but fuck me he is an unlucky bugger. We should have burried some games this season and be about 10-12 points better off, but have missed some fucking awful chances. Downing should have put Blackpool away, and now Bolton today, Bent could have got 3 today, grrr. if we put games to bed when we have the chances there would be less pressure on the back 4 in truth.

The yellow card for Clark was harsh though, was clearly watching the ball and the contact was minimal at most, just seemed to brush him with his forearm, debateable if it was even a freekick if the guy hadn't gone down like he'd been assaulted.

We need the big men back at the back for the rest of the season. This back 4 is always going to struggle from corners. Emile would have been useful to defend them.

Friedel has to take responsibility for the 2nd, took far too long trying to get up after the first save, 2nd shot should have been easy to stop but he just couldn't get off the floor.

That made me laugh. Pretty impressive considering...
Still, I reckon supporting villa must be marginally less frustrating than supporting Arsenal. A chance to put pressure on man u and they're drawing 0-0 at home (missing shed loads too).

Just noticed that Ashley is wearing the captain's armband. Surprised he's not nominated himself to take the goal kicks, he takes every other flipping set piece.
Presumably this is GH's way of showing how appreciated he is and trying to encourage him to sign a new contract at the end of the season.

did Houllier miss the penalty or miss the countless chances we missed? Some people will just point the finger at Houllier for the sake of it. Sometimes, it really isn't the manager's fault and it would be good if that was recognized.

21 points lost from a winning position this season - is that a record?

Time for a football sabatical! Two weeks to mull over the last week! How utterly depressing.

If Houllier can grow the balls to employ one Geoff Capes to restrain Young at set pieces, I might just forgive him for one of the shittest seasons in living memory.

If Ashley had've scored that penalty we'd have (probably) won the game 3-1 or 4-1.

That is not the fault of the manager.

After Wednesday though, Bazz, he's fucked it, and he's a ******.

What now? 3 points from 7 games like after Moscow. We'll fucking go down!

You cannot blame the goals today on GH. The defence is a guy not played for months due to injury, and 3 kids, none of them big or imposing.

The problem GH has is that it has been individula errors continuously, and that is more difficult to stop than general marking etc.

The forward play is excellent apart from the finishing, we need to take the pressure off ourselves by converting more chances, if we score the goals we should be we would concede less.

That's when the momentum turned. It was just what Bolton needed.

Hoe the fuck is it Houlliers fault? The inevitable stupidity begins.

Hey he is the manager.   We have been consistently leaking goals since he joined us.   But dont  worry he knows what he is trying to achieve with the lads.

Leaking goals since he joined us? We conceded bloody lot's more before he joined us as well.

we played them off the park for the majority of that game, if we could defend and take our chances including a penalty, we would have been out of sight, i cant see how we can blame tha manager for this, pity we dont have a decent goalkeeper though

The forward play is less than excellent if the chances are not converted. There can be no excuses. It was piss poor. We loom like The Albion from a couple of years ago.

fuck off villa, fuck off houllier.... just FUCK OFF!

I don't think you can blame the manager for this.

Shit finishing from Bent and Young and the piss poor defending.

How long has he know we're shit at defending, especially set pieces?  What has he done to address it?   How long has it been obvious Young's set pieces are worse than shite?  what has he done to address it? Fuck all as far as I can see,.  I've been backing Gh and was moderate in my criticism midweek but today infuriated me.  A game we should have been out of sight in and we contrive to lose it.  Don't try and kid me the manager is blameless because that's just bollocks.

How can people not blame Houllier. He is the manager, he gives the team instructions. First goal, on the stroke of half time, Cahill scores when he loses Baker.
So, at half time does he re- think this strategy? No, Cahill goes out and does the same again in the second half.

Experienced coach? - Pick a Sunday league manager to spot that one.

Bent missed how many chances, Young missed his pen with most stupid pre penalty routine ever.

Fuck off Villa and Fuck off Houllier.

Regardless of who plays in it we make those mistakes the only player who seems to be immune is Cuellar who he never picks. With previously excellent players like Dunne, Collins, Luke Young and Warnock there we have dropped points. They cannot all be out of form at the same time.
