Alejandro Garnacho - discussion thread

I'm open-minded about Garnacho.  It seems he was on £110k pw at Chelsea, which is toppish, but probably half what we were paying Sancho.

Given Chelsea paid £40m and he's on the hook with them for another 6 years, I would think £30-£35m max would be pretty fair, particularly if there is also a loan fee.

It feels risky, but it seems Emery has seen something he can work with.  Fingers crossed.

they always add the old "Emery personally wanted him" when there’s less than universal clamour about a signing, its wearing a bit thin. I'd believe it when we chase a big target and stop picking up waifs and strays. The conversation was probably "Its Bailey for another season or I can get you Garnacho?"

On the flip side its a good move for Garnacho hes gone from mid table bench to champions league and looking at Argentina this summer they could of done with some pace in the team, so he can really reignite himself here...if he wants it.

Yep.  He's 22, there's plenty of room for him to mature too.

My main disappointment with the deal is that it probably means that there's no chance we can go for Rashford now

It’s going to be £42.3m if it eventually goes through according to Sky.

Boro fans were laughing when we bought Rogers, the teams he'd been loaned to didn't rate him highly, Man City didn't want him... now he's a British record transfer.

As I've said previously, my friends who are Blackpool season ticket holders and have an encyclopedic knowledge of anyone whose ever worn tangerine, thought that he was tidy but nothing special.   Remarkably, that was only three years ago.  I guess that's the difference between being coached by Unai and, err, Mick McCarthy.

Rashford was lovely but he won’t want to compromise on his wages so that was always pie in the sky.

I’m verging on the positive with this one but it may take a bit of time to click. Loan with a buy obligation seems sensible.

Yep, Rashford would have required a strong desire from the player to want to come.

But the fact he can play wide and also cover Watkins makes him absolutely ideal in my book. I thought he looked lively at the WC, and would have added massive quality to the squad.

I'm quite sure that Unai "personally wants" the big targets you're talking about, but they're currently out of our financial reach, unfortunately. 

Our market right now is players that either fly under the radar a bit (Gomes), are pretty unknown at the top level (Rogers), or proven players who come with some sort of baggage that makes them gettable (Rashford/Sancho/Garnacho).  It's a bit frustrating, but I also recognise where we are in our evolution. 

I look forward to the day we can sign a £100m player at the peak of his powers, but I suspect we're at least another 2 or 3 years away from that (and that assumes we remain in the Champions League for at least a couple of those years).

That's clearly too high.  Not sure how we can justify that to UEFA.
