I have finally worked out who the Ecuadorian coach reminds me of - Claudio Caniggia

Yes, initially thought Joao Pinto but you’re a lot more accurate.

Caniggia was the 'main feature' of one of my favourite non-goal pieces of action from a world cup, the cameroon double hack in 1990. Great tournament for non-football stuff, 1990. Including one of the absolute great exchanges between players - Rudi Voeller and Frank Riijkaard and their 'spitting in hair' situation.

Proper fucked Scotland that

They must be getting that sinking feeling. I didn't expect South Africa or Ecuador to win their games.

Yes that challenge on Caniggia was certainly erm, untidy!

The beauty of that Caniggia challenge was that the second “tackle” ( in reality, GBH) came from a defender who was off screen so you had no idea it was coming. It’s one of my favourite non Villa moments and an absolutely glorious passage of play

Scotland need Sweden to lose by four clear goals.

Pretty sure Japan can help there.

I loved the way Pete Davies described that Massing challenge in his book on Italia '90. I can't remember the exact quote but it was something like: Massing's intention wasn't so much to break Caniggia's legs but more to separate them from the rest of his body.

One of my favourite ever world cup moments. Cannigga actually helped to make it so great by trying to ride both attacks on him, incredible.

I'm beginning to suspect that Tunisia may not be very good.

They don’t appear to have had much of a new manager bounce.

Tunisia with one of the great all time shambolic World Cups.

Like Scotland without SJM.

Quite enjoyed the Ecuador / Germany game. The Ecuador manager looks like an Austin McPhee tribute act.
