It’s plainly obvious Royal is a squad player to replace Garcia. What’s the issue?

The issue I'd have is that I'd prefer to spend money on younger players who can initially compete with, and eventually replace the older bodies.

Rather than spending money on players just to pad out the squad.

Id be the same re squad padding. When in the ECL/EL you could understand to an extent the likes of Lenglet or Lindelof coming in as there would be plenty of relatively easily Thurs night football to be played for experienced players. That's not the case in the CL obviously.

It looks increasingly likely that Emmerson Royal is coming to Villa, being reported in more places, including the Express and Star.

Beyond difficult to get excited about that. If it facilitates Garcia and Ned going though then maybe that’s a small benefit but he really is decidedly average.
It depends how/why he's coming in as far as I'm concerned.  I'd have concerns if it was as first choice, but it won't be.  At £9m you're only really getting punts on players who might be, but probably won't be, any good.  Emerson Royal played regularly in an upper-mid-table Spurs side, so IMO will be absolutely fine for giving Cash a rest when he needs it.  Our only option there at the moment is playing our central defenders out of position, or Garcia/Ned who clearly aren't judged to be anywhere near the standard we need.

He played somewhat regularly rotating with mighty Matt Doherty. I know lots of players have struggled there but Emerson was utterly useless any time I saw him. Awful on the ball. I'm surprised any PL team would be interested in him.
How many times did you see him?

Quite a few, go check out some of the Spurs fans thoughts on him. Pretty sure he was getting booed off at times there, granted that happens lots of players, but this continued at Milan and even in Brazil.

Maybe we are completely boxed in again on transfers and what we can spend, but Emerson Royal for 9m!!

For someone you dont rate and we're possibly about to sign, you seemed to have followed his career around Europe and South America closely enough. Hmm.

I've given a view, was keeping an eye on Doherty from an Ireland perspective so saw a good bit of their struggles at right back back then. Doherty could play a bit but couldn't or wouldn't defend. Royal perhaps stronger defensively but awful on the ball. He's bombed at Milan and ended up back in Brazil.

I'm not sure why the honorary chairperson of the happy clappers crew bothers even posting on a transfer thread. The club knows best in your eyes back to when you were doffing your cap at the likes of Krulak.

Doffing my cap at Krulak? I think you may have me mistaken for someone else.

Maybe I hit a nerve. Sorry about that. To be honest, i thought you were going to go back through your files and post what marks out of ten you gave him whilst he was playing for Flamengo.

Is the Royal definitely happening?
My memory of him playing for Spurs was that he was awful.
I really hoped that we had moved on from this sort of signing.

We definitely need the hear and now with the need for CL each season. This generates income. Other than commercial income, the only cheat code to bridge the gap financially between us and the other top 4 is the ability to buy a developing player at a modest fee and if successful under Unai sell them on at a huge profit.
Gotcha loud and clear!

Aston Villa chase £25m La Liga midfielder

Aston Villa are reportedly chasing a move for Celta Vigo midfielder Ilaix Moriba as they seek to bolster their midfield this summer.

He has since established himself in the heart of their midfield, and it is now claimed that Celta would be willing to sell the 23-year-old, whose style has been likened to Yaya Toure.

It is said a fee of around £25m could be enough to lure him to England, where he would add strength in depth to a Villa squad that will be tested next season as they chase honours at home and abroad.

Royal has played for Barca, Betis, Spurs and Milan, and has 10 caps for Brazil. At one point Spurs thought he was good enough to pay over £25m for him, and he played a lot of times for them.

Honestly, the reaction is laughable, it's buttons on an experienced cover for Matty Cash.

Brontë man, come on, you get in a lather over dross like that Williams at Forest then go all Ian Paisley on a deal like this.

Aston Villa midfielder's exit for 'substantial fee' could pave way for Lucas Bergvall signing

Lamare Bogarde is reportedly attracting interest from both Sunderland and Brighton this summer with Aston Villa braced for an offer.

The 22-year-old made 44 appearances across all competitions for Unai Emery's team this season, with 22 of those from the start.

I could see something happening at £17m plus add-ons.

We should be getting in somebody to put pressure on Cash for his spot. We have tried loads there and nearly all awful. If not straight away, at least with the potential to soon enough. The logic above re Royal is similar to Sancho, 25 international caps etc. Kleberson won a world cup with Brazil. It's neither here nor there, he's flopped at Spurs, Milan and ended up back in Brazil. Maybe Lindelof was a similar profile that worked out but at least he was free. Cash and McGinn, the drop off when they are out is too big for a team chasing honours.

I think Williams is a good player and can play in both full back positions but that's besides the point.

I'm sure we would be getting someone to do just that, if we had a budget to do so. But even guff like Williams would probably set your back north of £40m in today's market and therein lies the problem.
