Forest had everything going right for about 5 months, including Wood scoring at an insane rate. I've said before that top end strikers consistently score 20-25% of chances, Wood was at nearly 35% for months. Then reality kicked in and in the last 12 months he's scored in 4 PL games, and one of those drops off at midnight.

There would have to be an incredibly unlikely run of results for 66 points to be required to get CL qualification this season.  League points are already far more widely spread this year than for a long time (the 40 point mark possibly being required to avoid relegation for the first time in over a decade), so the teams at the top are not hitting the kind of numbers that usually get CL, added to the fact that 5th will qualify again this season.  The below link is the Opta analysis for the rest of the season

Basically, 63 points should be enough.  Because of head to head games, even if two of Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool overperform their expected results, it then makes it even more difficult for the other team to reach even 62 points.

You're last line is the depressing bit. Keep that midfield fit and it would definitely have been 'on'. It's going to be difficult to be in such a good situation again with our enforced limited spending. Saying that, I probably thought the same when we could have gone top if we had beaten Sheffield United.

Even a few months after that miraculous run and promotion I enjoyed the hospitality on the opening day at Spurs, with that shiny new stadium, the England captain and their new £65m midfielder and thought we're decades off ever competing with them again.
