I think he is getting better the more he plays, if he continues to improve I would be looking at signing him on a free, and if he has a poor 12 months after then sell him for a profit.

He'd probably want silly money, and there will probably be more desperate teams ready to give it to him. If we don't get top 5 then maybe a case of beggars can't be choosers but in terms of goals and assists, he's contributed next to nothing. Probably paid him about £3m for his one goal, there got to be better value out there.  He'd need a massive rest of the season for us to consider it.

But of our non existent wider options, he's probably been the most lively (£20m+ on Guessand, what a disaster 😔)

There's no need to rush. I agree he's improving every week. See how he does for the rest of the season.

One thing I really like, and it's rare in attacking positions, is I have complete confidence in him keeping the ball, even in tight areas/when beating a man.

While that may be true, surely it isn't a consideration for the here and now, but for when it comes to making a decision on him at the end of the season?

Right now, it seems to me that the only question in town is whether he deserves his place on footballing merit?

While that may be true, surely it isn't a consideration for the here and now, but for when it comes to making a decision on him at the end of the season?

Agreed. He’s 25, a very good age to continue to develop and improve. He seems to have a good attitude too. He might not be a first choice option if we can find a really good option on the right but good to have in rotation.

So we’ll take him on a free and the biggest wage reduction in prem history? Can’t see both of those happening.

Depends on what we pay him to stay at the club. Others have taken wage cuts to come here or stay here. And if we get CL then it takes the pressure off a bit.

As has been pointed out before, you'd give him a signing bonus in lieu of salary, then stick him into the Villa pay structure.

If you wanted him, that is - which johne doesn't - and fair enough, it's all about opinions, innit?

Personally, strikes me that he's growing into his role fairly nicely, though not as fast as we might like and as yet, without sufficient end product.
