They're bigger now than they were in 1977. So is everyone, arguably, due to exponential growth of the top flight worldwide. The statement doesn't seem particularly shocking to me. In terms of trophies won up to the date of relegation, I think Vlla 2016 are the biggest club ever to go down. Man United 1975 and Villa 1936 probably the biggest in terms of their standing at the time. Tottenham would certainly be near the top of the list.
