Chelsea have urged fans travelling to Naples for Wednesday's Champions League game to "exercise extreme caution" after two supporters needed hospital treatment.

The Italian city has a long history of cases of away supporters being targeted by Napoli ultras.

"The club is aware of an incident that took place on Tuesday evening in Naples," a Chelsea statement said.

"Two fans are being treated in hospital, having sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The club would like to remind all supporters to exercise extreme caution whilst in the city and take note of the advice shared ahead of this fixture."

There has been no official confirmation of how the injuries were caused.

Around 2,500 Chelsea supporters have tickets for the game, with fans urged to meet at designated areas so they can travel to the ground by shuttle bus under police escort.

In travel advice that was issued to fans earlier this month, Chelsea said: "During Uefa competition matches, attacks on away fans have sometimes occurred in Naples."

Supporters have been urged not to walk around the city and to avoid wearing club colours or emblems that identify them as Chelsea fans.

Liam Rosenior's side need a win against Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona to go directly into the last-16 stage of the Champions League.

Their hosts - Serie A champions last season - are seeking a win to stay in the competition.

I quite like getting the ferry, but I got one overnight to the Isle of Man once in stormy conditions and I'd be fucked if I'd do it again, 4 hours of existential terror.

Over 30 years ago my dad died in December in Dublin and as usual in Ireland the funeral was 48 hours later. One friend couldn’t afford the flights at short notice so took the ferry from Holyhead. Awful storms meant conditions were too dangerous to dock and they were stuck at sea for almost 20 hours in total.

We got the ferry back from Ireland as Storm Kathleen hit in 2024, and it was horrific. We cancelled the last day of our trip and got the last ferry before they cancelled operations as the little one had school and we couldn't risk being stuck in Ireland for a couple of extra days.  It put me off ferry travel for life. I've never been so focussed on where the life rafts and life jackets were. And I say that as someone who has gone through aborted plane landings in bad weather TWICE.

Ferries can go in room 101.

I used to sail with the Royal Navy and have experienced up to Sea State 8 in the Barents and Artic Ocean. I wouldn't say scary but it's flippin' miserable. There's just no escape from it.

We went to Ireland for Christmas 1977 our daughter was 13 months old., it was a nightmare from start to finish. The sailing time was 3:15 pm if memory serves and we got off the train and were herded like cattle to the quayside doors and left waiting for ages. They eventually let us on and like idiots we went to the top of the ship as Mrs S wanted to get settled quickly as the baby needed feeding and so did we, huge mistake.

The ferry got underway about three hours late and we were warned that sea conditions were going to be rough. Once we got beyond the sea wall we were hit by almighty waves and within minutes the puking started and it was horrendous, it was everywhere, the toilets were awash with piss and puke that were almost ankle deep.

I remember looking at this poor German Shepherd and I'm sure even he was green.  The ferry was the St Columba and there was no finesse, no carpets jusr plain iron sheeting and i remember watching this pint of lager which had been abandoned sliding from one side to the other.

There were other things that went on during that crossing but this post is getting too long.  To cap things off, not long after we got home my old man died!

Yet FIFA always blames English fans.  whay are clubs allowed to compete in competitions if the away fans aren't safe.  Pathetic.

Haven't seen it mentioned, 7 PAOK fans died in a traffic accident while travelling to Lyon for a Europa game.

I have been on that St Columba around the same era.  Horrendous ship.  All I remember was some bloke puking the entire contents of his excessive beer intake over the side constantly.  He seemed to never stop until the end of the journey.  It was a combination of England and Ireland's most wanted aboard as well.  I also saw Johnny Fingers having dinner at a relatively posh part of the boat (which has to be set in context).  I was only around 8 at the time but it is amazing what you remember.
