Chelsea have urged fans travelling to Naples for Wednesday's Champions League game to "exercise extreme caution" after two supporters needed hospital treatment.

The Italian city has a long history of cases of away supporters being targeted by Napoli ultras.

"The club is aware of an incident that took place on Tuesday evening in Naples," a Chelsea statement said.

"Two fans are being treated in hospital, having sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The club would like to remind all supporters to exercise extreme caution whilst in the city and take note of the advice shared ahead of this fixture."

There has been no official confirmation of how the injuries were caused.

Around 2,500 Chelsea supporters have tickets for the game, with fans urged to meet at designated areas so they can travel to the ground by shuttle bus under police escort.

In travel advice that was issued to fans earlier this month, Chelsea said: "During Uefa competition matches, attacks on away fans have sometimes occurred in Naples."

Supporters have been urged not to walk around the city and to avoid wearing club colours or emblems that identify them as Chelsea fans.

Liam Rosenior's side need a win against Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona to go directly into the last-16 stage of the Champions League.

Their hosts - Serie A champions last season - are seeking a win to stay in the competition.
Yet FIFA always blames English fans.  whay are clubs allowed to compete in competitions if the away fans aren't safe.  Pathetic.

I disagree.

Yes Napoli have fans who will fight opposition supporters but so does every big team. If you walk down the Kings Road on match day as an obvious away fan you will be confronted.

These articles portray the British fans as innocents and the European fans as the aggressor always. The article only gives one side of the story. In all liklihood a group of Chelsea fans going from one pub to another would not be shrinking violets. In fact Chelsea have the highest number of fan arrests in the premier league (per capita). [Villa are third by the way.]

So no I am not got to swallow the innocent Chelsea fans and violent foreign fans narrative without questioning it.

Going to settle down and watch the footy tonight, can someone whose brain isn’t frazzled please tell me the best scenario for us regards the English sides results this evening, and therefore who to root for?

Unconfirmed reports suggest that they asked for pineapple on their Margherita, and it kicked off.

There isn't really a correct answer. You can take the good or the bad from whatever happens.

It's still good for English teams to do well to ensure that fifth is good enough UNTIL such a time arrives that we don't need to worry about what's going on down there.

But them doing well gives them more money. And obviously happier supporters for winning Champions League matches.

Then again, us having midweek matches later in the season and our rivals not, having been knocked out - also not good for us.

I tend to default to finding it really good if they all lose, and considering the above as the consolation prize when they don't.

At the very least it would be good for Newcastle to have a playoff either side of our cup tie
