Scoring goals is his primary job. He's a striker. That's their job. Especially when he's the lone striker.

But that’s where you’re most wrong. I don’t want him scoring 9 more if it means the team scores 10 fewer overall.

Well It wouldn't would it, if he scores 9 more it would mean the team has scored 9 more.

It's other people who bring assists and running a lot into it as a defence for his poor return, not me. I'm not ignoring anything. It's a discussion about goalscoring, not his all round game.

No it isn't, it never has been and people have said that to you many, many times. You talk about finding a better striker, that means his overall game is part of the discussion but then dismiss it as not important every time it gets mentioned.

"Watkins doesn't score enough goals" - must be trolling. Do you genuinely think 17 goals is a good return for his past 61 games? Not assists, not pre assists, just goals.

More or less 1 in 3.

Yes, frankly, given the other stuff he does too - and I don't care if you think that doesn't come into it, it should.

That's a no.

The discussion from here should be, 'do you think his all round game makes up for his poor goal return?'. That is at least a more reasonable discussion to have.

It shouldn't be, 'his goal return is good enough because he also has assists and runs around a lot'. The latter doesn't mean the former is good enough.

Poor goal return, lets see.

Premier league top scorer position:
24/25 - 7th
23/24 - 4th
22/23 - 7th
21/22 - 14th
20/21 - 8th

So 1 season outside the top 10 since he arrived, that's not a poor goal return by any reasonable measure, and when you then add everything else on top you get one of the most productive strikers in the league for 5 consecutive seasons, with an overall record of 1 in 2.48

I think that's where you depart from pretty much everybody else, you seem to think that if a team scores forty and the striker scores twenty, that striker is better than one who scores fifteen in a team that scores fifty. Which is silly.

I would think that the one who scored 20 goals has a better goal record than the one who scored 15. Which would be fact?

Obviously I can understand the wider point of contribution to the team as a whole but that's not what I'm discussing.

Sure, better goal record. Absolute fact. But other than Fantasy Football nerds, who gives a toss?

The one that you want playing for you is the one who means we win more football matches.

And if Watkins has another season that is any way close to his last two, then he gets every season until he stops doing that.

And the time he was outside the top 10 was Gerrard, who'd have managed to turn prime Messi into Tonev.

Yes and that’s the point. Whatever position any player plays it’s about what they bring to the team. Ollie is a good goal scorer, his record is better than 1 in 3 in his time here. But he is an excellent forward, when you add that to his assists and general play. It’s really simple.

We have an excellent player, with a great all round game and suits the way we play. He’s a one in three and will be always creating many chances. It seems we have a serious problem been able to spend money, so who do you suggest we buy instead of Watkins for the peanuts we might have set aside.

Wednesday 25/1 to beat Leeds at home. Still wouldn't go for it, they're playing the kids for some reason.

Joe Gauci in goal for Vale at St Andrew's.

No, because we’re ignoring his assists. Unless you mean other players are going to pick up that slack? In which case I agree, the whole team could be better at scoring and assisting with the goals, helping us win more matches and we shouldn’t be singling out the person who’s done the lion’s share of that throughout his time here.
