I really hate the “PSR” deals like Ozcan and Ned. They might be entirely necessary, perhaps, but they feel disingenuous.

Was Ned our 1000 player?  Or am I mis-rembering it?

But why are they necessary, Paul?! Connect the dots.

Pay your top stars five grand a week less and put it in the Jacob Ramsey pot.

Exactly. We’ve overpaid for peripheral players, particularly their wages.

I fully understand the premise, my dislike is that they are often presented as something they are not.

Based on what I've read and watched on podcasts, Ramsey was offered a new contract months ago. His agents advised him to hold fire while he was in and out of the team. Villa players were told/knew at the end of last season that we would have to sell at least one name-player. Martínez was presumably emboldened by this as his agent has been in discussions with Yanited since early this year.

JJ also knew that he was someone the club would reluctantly consider bids for given the rules make him more valuable than other options.

Over the summer he found-out West Ham and Newcastle (and clubs in Europe, apparently) were prepared to pay him more than we are. He's still got ambitions of playing for England, is probably in a Whatsapp group with the likes of Gordon (Gordon Ramsey!), Murphy and others who tell him Uncle Eddie loves him and will get him in the England squad. He also has the possibility of Champions League football and a potential run of games to prove himself a regular which isn't exactly the case at Villa where he hasn't been settled as a regular starter for quite a while.

Villa do try and persuade him to sign, hoping that we can sell Bailey, Buendia etc. to make up the difference but his head is turned and it's too late. We reluctantly agree, taking some pressure off getting good money for Bailey (hence sanctioning his loan move).

The sense of all that seems as plausible as anything else I’ve heard.

That’s very cryptic/ambiguous. What do you precisely mean by that?

They’re not even given a chance to be something. I thought Ned had some decent attributes and could have given us a good option, looks like Garcia might be going the same way.

Ocsan was the biggest surprise for me.  That is one I question them on but what do I know.

And they are presented as if they are intended to be something. Now I fully get you can’t go out saying - “we’ve got no real intention of player x ever playing for us”, but it all feels very hollow.

Ozcan is a really good example.

Unless he knew he could improve them and blend them in with his own. Rogers and Tielemans were Unai’s signings and they were excellent for the majority of last season.

Exactly. Isn’t it well known that Tielemans and Rogers were Unai’s picks?

Isn’t it more a case of mmm. (Monchi’s massive mistakes)

Torres was clearly an Emery pick too, as was Moreno. Great starts but both fizzled out badly. Philogene was another one Emery pushed for, poor call but we didn't lose much selling him on again. Maybe Barkley too, was reported Emery was keen on him.

Onana and Maatsen were caught up in that funny business we got up to with Everton and Chelsea. Emery would have known both players well so is as guilty as Monchi on those.

I think the debatable ones are Zaniolo, Guessand, Ned, Malen and Garcia, all seem to be Monchis picks but Emery never seemed keen on the last three.
