I dont think we've taken any steps back. We've successfully cleared the wage bill of low contributors and 1 player we'd have ideally liked to have kept. Such is football.

This is done to create wiggle room. Next summer we'll have more wiggle room as 70% of £360m (let's say) is significantly more than 70% of £275m.

^^ Bit defeatist mate. What rules stop us from running an academy as successful as Chelsea’s or Man City’s? What rules stop us from expanding the stadium or building a ground like Spurs? What rules stop us from recruiting more Jhon Durans and Morgan Rogers’s? What rules stop us from Associated Party Transactions with the owners’ companies? What rules stop us from selling the Warehouse to V Sports for £50m? What rules stop us from buying players and parking them at Vitoria for a year?

Edit: that was in response to Nii Lamptey.

Every team end up selling players they'd rather not sell. The problem is that for us it's been the homegrown ones.

Rogers signed a new deal in November that takes it to 2030. He's worth more than anyone (bar Saudi) would pay. He won't be going anywhere.

Is it realistic that we would max out 70% of the 2024/25 revenue knowing full well our 2025/26 revenue was way lower. Surely the club has to take at least a 2 to 3 year view or you end up dismantling your team again the following summer.

We may not have gone backwards but we haven't kept up with the Sky6 and their massive spending spree this summer . Across 50 odd games we won't be able to keep up .

We will be in contention for 5th because we’ve got Emery.

The squad isn't as strong as the one that finished last season. When you've lost Rash, Asenscio, Bailey and Ramsey thats a lot of firepower.
We're relying Watkins and Rogers to stay fit and hoping Malen and Guessard come good.

I am 100% sure the Arsenal links to Rogers were placed as part of their plan to sign Eze - as in "Look Palace, this is what we're offering, take it, or we're moving on to Rogers".  There is no way they're buying both, and I don't think it's a surprised it looks like the Eze deal is now done.

In response to Percy's post:

I watched highlights of Chumps League qualifiers last night and spotted Barrenechea playing for Benfica, so I checked his stats - 5 starts already for him this season.

Our deal with them is: €3m loan fee plus a  buy obligation of €12m (subject to conditions being met) and a 30% sell-on clause.

So €15m is pretty well guaranteed and given Portuguese football’s propensity for developing players a €30m sale in the future wouldn't be a surprise, (double what Benfica will pay us). Earning us a further €9m in sell-on fees.

That would give us  €24m for a player who we got for €8m + €3m add-ons (which won't have been paid.
So a net €17m - £14.5m for a player who never played for us.

Cityesque/Chelseaesque

That's what we're going to have to do in the future to bring in money, and is why we're signing the likes of Zeppy Redmond, Yasin Ozcan, Illing-Junior and Kosta Nedeljkovic.

It might be distasteful and not the "Villa way", but if we want to compete with the Greedy6 then that's what we'll have to do  until such time as we have a 60k+ stadium half full of tourists and a global following of millions.

Monchi and Co found Duran, Rogers and Barrnechea - they just need to find one year after year and the best way to do that is by signing two or three possibles each season, in the hope of finding a hidden gem to be either polished and sold, or kept as a crown jewel.

Reports of our slow lingering death have been greatly exaggerated. Whilst we may see a reduction in revenue this season as opposed to last imv it’ll be nowhere near as bad as some are predicting. Get to the latter stages of the Europa League and maintain top 6  I’d suggest it won’t drop that much. In addition increased capacity in the stadium and seemingly new commercial deals makes me hopeful that the drop off if there is any won’t  be too much.

Let’s see what the squad looks like at the end of August.

Absolutely, we will need some ‘finished article’ type loans before the window ‘slams shut’. Otherwise we will be praying some serious good luck to finish in the top 7.

Spurs won't pay what we would want, ever.

£3m and Josh Onomah?
