I want Brighton to win. I have no idea why anyone would want Chelsea to win a game where we have no skin in the game.

Yup. And if we do end up opening up sixth to Champions League qualification, it suits us better that it's not Chelsea sitting there.

I suppose we want a draw tonight.

What are the magic numbers for both?

Chelsea 6
Brighton 5

So, Chelsea win:

Chelsea 6
Brighton 2

Draw:

Chelsea 4
Brighton 3

Brighton win:

Chelsea 3
Brighton 5

… I think.

Magic number is a US sports term as it relates to the combined number of wins/losses that means team B cannot catch team A.

For us it's points rather than wins. No one on 48 points can get more than 63 points, those on 47 it's 62 and so on. As we're on 58 a combined 6 points won by us, or dropped by a team on 48, means they cannot catch us. 5 combined points for those on 47, and so on.

It amused me to do 6 7 rather than the real answer as i'm dead mature.

One fun little permutation is that if Chelsea manage to hang around sixth place, they go to Anfield on May 9th.

So it could plausibly be in their interest to lose to Liverpool to help push us down to fifth, thus opening up sixth for CL qualification.

Brighton drawing with Spurs is a solid indicator they're not winning 5 in a row, not that any of them are mind, so lets opt for Chelsea to be battered senseless.

Trying to understand FFP, FSR, SCR, European qualification, the Scottish EPL and the UEFA Nations League has done my head in.

Football used to be a simple game.

I'm going for a lie down.

Similarly, Brentford have Liverpool last game and it could be better for them to lose.

It's sound logic to me.

For me the fun permutation would be for Brighton to poo over both Liverpool and Chelsea by grabbing 5th.

Mental to think down here (in Brighton) they were all moaning about their manager, wanting him gone as recently as February!

A Brighton win tonight combined with us beating Fulham, and we may be enthusiastically cheering Chelsea on against Liverpool and Spurs.

Most Brighton fans won't know whether to cheer Chelsea or Brighton given my experience of living there in the 2000's

I happened upon Talk Sport yesterday evening, Chelsea’s season was being discussed with some very disgruntled fans. They’re not happy with the direction of the club and dislike the owner and management as they are more interested in making money than winning stuff. Apparently, there have been protests with more planned. They would prefer a reset rather over CL qualification. It was all music to my ears.

Yep, still plenty of Chelsea shirts, more than other non-local teams from what I've seen.
Although, I was on the train back home last Saturday from King's Cross soon after the Spurs v Brighton game. There were plenty of Seagulls but I was surprised to see a bunch of Spurs fans getting off at places like Hassocks and Haywards Heath. Thankfully, none in Hove...

Brighton does seem to be a strange place that has a high % of fans of bigger clubs which I guess reflects their decades of struggle on and off the pitch.

Having the stadium a few miles out of town probably doesn't help. If the Goldstone was still around, I'd probably go to the odd game.

Basically if we were in Chelseas shoes I'd lose the rest of the matches to avoid Europe altogether, no piss pot prize money and avoid the scrutiny of the FSR.
