International break possibly coming at wrong time after momentum of past week. McGinn coming back with an injury would be a disaster.

At least most of our players are only playing in friendlies. I think the break overall is positive. Give several players a well earned rest before the big push.

You can spin this both ways, the likes of Chelsea going in on the back of downwards momentum have 2-3 weeks to stew on their recent shitness.

The way I look at it is there’s 3 spots up for grabs and 4 teams going for them

If you take the starting 11s of all 4 teams I think we’re OK,
if you take the squad depths of all 4 teams we’re the weakest, mainly because the other three have spent hundreds of millions and we’ve spent fuck all

But we have by far the best manager of any of those four teams, in fact, the other three managers are under pressure to even be in their current positions next season
So for me that makes up for it and swings it in our direction

Chelsea have enough quality players for at least two teams so I’m not going to lament their lack of rest over the summer, but hay, they’re world club champions aren’t they. So it’s all been worth knackering your players for the season ahead at what is no more than a friendly tournament makes it all worthwhile. Mugs!

The £100m-ish in prize money probably helped them a lot though but yeah, the competition is clearly bullshit.

Christ, was it that much? Similar to a CL campaign.

If that turned out to be true, we would only need 1 win and 1 draw for CL.

I think it will be close and we'll do it by 1 or 2 points.

Which bit? If you're replying to OCD then he's right, if Chelsea cap out at 57 points then 4 points for the rest of the season would be enough for us to get 5th.

57 points is about what I think they'll end up on as well because they have tough run-in.

Last weekend was such a big deal. I didn't see it coming at all. Not so much our win, although the performance itself was a massive shot in the arm, but the rate at which everyone else dropped points. It's also becoming pretty clear that Liverpool and Chelsea, despite picking up form as we collapsed, have reverted back to the mean and probably aren't going to finish with any real consistency.

Really shifted the probability in our favour. So chuffed. I was raging after Old Trafford last season. It felt at the time like a massive opportunity missed and possibly terminal due to what it was destined to do to the summer. Emery and the players have done an incredible job considering the obvious shortcomings in the squad in a couple of positions. If we can get this over the line and get the next 2/3 windows right, we can really set ourselves for another phase. Think we need both though. Qualification and a batch of transfers similar to the two year run we had when the majority of the current squad was built.
