It was never founded as an "English" league. Scotland started its own league in the 1890s but Wales didn't get around to founding one until 1992. The majority of Welsh clubs moved over to play in it but the bigger clubs stayed in the English system. A couple of Scottish clubs, Gretna and Annan Athletic, formerly played in the English non-league system.

A quick Google search shows Man United having 12 successive home cup draws. 4,096/1.

Over both competitions, not just the FA Cup. For that they have been drawn away more then home in the last 10 years so I expect there is a similar lengthy always away streak as well.

We've played Cardiff three times previously in the FAC. Lost 2-1 away 1927, won 6-1 at home 1929, lost 2-1 at home 1949.

The old adage which I grew up with and I’ve seen John Russell mention “The team that beats the Villa wins the Cup”

It was certainly true in 1927.

It certainly happened a fair few times!

Why do Cardiff get permission to play in English leagues anyway ? Is it because like Swansea they have outgrown the Welsh Leagues?
How come Scottish Teams like Celtic and Rangers don’t get to play in England leagues?

I wondered if they have more pedigree than Scottish players at top level . Historically I mean and abroad.
I remember hearing on a podcast the greatest British player to succeed overseas was a Welshman . John Charles at Juventus. Gareth Bale at Real Madrid won things but didn’t have the same impact as Charles did when he was in Italy

The best Villa v Cardiff game I've been to was Boxing Day 1968. Tommy Docs 2nd game in charge, over 40k in the ground. The beginning of the revolution.




Note the Cardiff team included John Toshack. Also Mel Sutton, who was on the Villa books but didnt make it to the first team.

So unbelievable, that it isn’t true.

Unless the stat is that it once happened. Then it is true but not slightly unbelievable. Other teams have had similar runs. Us being one of them.

People used to say that about us when we held the record. “A thousand to one odds” they’d say, “it must be a fix” they’d say.

Maybe we stopped bribing the FA and Shrewsbury took over. Then when Man U got in on the act even the Shrews were outbid.
