Thanks for correcting Dave, I thought I’d read somewhere that they had a years option and used it, meaning the contract was up in 2026. I guess, given his fall from grace, Rashford will be keen to work harder, hopefully.

Carl Anka (athletic reporter and occasionally on the football daily podcast) wrote his biography and could not speak highly enough about Rashford having spent time with him and getting to know him.

He’s scathing about man united generally despite obviously being a fan.

I really like Carl Anka. He’s a cut above most football journos. Disappointed to learn he’s a Manure fan.

I don’t know for certain but you could tell there was real angst and disappointment when talking about the shambles behind the scenes at Man U.  Pretty sure James Richardson et al used to ask his opinion from a fans’ perspective too.

We're only allowed 2 loans, so not a chance we go for Felix now. Unless we're going to blow the lot on him and Disasi.

Isn't it 2 domestic loans? So the Asensio loan wouldn't count.

Quote
Premier League clubs can register a maximum of four players on loan at any time during a season. However, there are restrictions on the number of loans from the same club or from other Premier League clubs.

Restrictions
No more than one player can be on loan from the same club
No more than two players can be on loan from other Premier League clubs
A club cannot loan out a player they acquired in the same transfer window to another Premier League club
A club can only loan one of its goalkeepers to another Premier League club

I still think it is only 2 at any one time, according to the Premier League website:

Under the rules in the Premier League Handbook 2024/25 (Download PDF, size: 18.2MB), there are restrictions on how many players Premier League clubs can loan from other Premier League/English clubs.

They are:
- Premier League clubs may not register more than two players on loan at any one time.
- The maximum number of loans registrable in the same season is four, and, under no circumstances, shall more than one be from the same club at any one time.
- Premier League clubs cannot loan to another Premier League club a player they have acquired in the same transfer window.
- A Premier League club may loan not more than one of its goalkeepers to another Premier League club.

If it ends up like this..

In
Asensio, Rashford, Malen, Disasi, Garcia

Out
Duran, Buendia, Philogene, Carlos, Gauci,

Surely we're happy?

But what you've quoted there  "restrictions on how many players Premier League clubs can loan from other Premier League/English clubs".

So if we loan Rashford and Asensio we can still loan one more Premier League player (as long as it's not from Man Utd)

Edit - take Ipswich for example, they've currently got Phillips on loan from Man City and Enciso on loan from Brighton (so two Premier League loans). They've also got Godfrey on loan from Atalanta and Cajuste on loan from Napoli (giving them four in total).

So both deals, Asension and Rashford, are potentially costing us between say £7-10m, say £20m in expenses and also off-set by the omission of Duran and Buendia’s wages.  call it £15m tops.

Subject to a CB coming in I think the club have thrown the dice in a sensible yet ambitious way to give us a good chance of getting back into Europe.

The Ipswich example helps, because reading the premier league handbook there is a huge dollop of ambiguity on overseas temporary transfers as they like to put them.

It does still pose the questions of 1. Will Chelsea loan us Disasi and 2. Would we then want to buy Felix.

Also, 3. Is Mings fit next Sunday, because Disasi is cup tied.

I’m ok with the coverage of wages over the short-term because it’s not that big of a hit. Does suggest though that even if they’re very good they’re unlikely to be here over the long-term.

I’d be happy with the attacking options, possibly a “better” centre half than Disasi, but I’ve not watched him loads, and possibly a loan for a left sided centre half, in case Mings or Torres suffer any setbacks.

that was my original thought but the deal agreed in pencil with Rashford suggests otherwise, if true.

Both Rashford and Asensio have proved they are top footballers at the highest level. The success or failure of these moves will come down to their desire to prove they still have the ambition to chase trophies. They are effectively replacing Philogene and Buendia in the squad, two players who have contributed next to nothing this season. These are low risk gambles that could transform us offensively.
