That it exists now is the important bit.

There's way more Villa fans in the black country though. There is a rivalry with them, not on the level of sha or Albion but it's there. It's why we have a 2000 post thread about them and not Norwich or West Ham.

I'm from the Black Country. There are loads more Villa than Small Heath, I only met 1 growing up.

I remember big cup games against Wolves in 80s and 90s with lots of Wolves fans around the ground and a loud atmosphere but then there were always loud atmospheres against Coventry despite most Birmingham based Villa fans claiming that isn’t a rivalry.

We have no local rivals.

We have one of the moodiest and nastiest derbies in the country with Small Heath. We have one several notches down the scale with the Albion. We have one of curious amusement at the Coventry of the west. After they last beat us the a couple of seasons back at the Molineux, the streets resembled Buenos Aires after a world cup victory. We'll walk back home tomorrow after doing them with no more or less spring in our step than after we'd beat an Everton or a Tottenham.

Maybe, but the vast majority of it is us taking the piss because they thought they were going to become champions league regulars rather than any real rivalry from our side. It's far more reactive than you'd expect from a real rivalry.

As Ads says I struggle to see Baggies and Blues as real rivals but I'll accept both of them because it's been there consistently for as long as most people can remember. Put it another way, when was the last time Villa started a chant about Wolves when we weren't playing them?

The Black Country Villa at the table next to me in McCarthys on Tuesday night after the game started singing Mind The Gap, as they did in the Aussie place in Lille in April.

Always hate this fixture. No matter what the tables look like we nearly always seem to struggle against them, with one or two exceptions.
Expect them to cope with their midweek exertions better than us.

Coventry would always be one of the lowest gates of the season along with the likes of Wimbledon and Luton.

It was a total stroll. Sheffield United and Burnley gave us a harder time. Levico is chatting his usual shite.

Everton 4-0 was a stroll. Luton H was a stroll, as was Bournemouth. Brighton 6-1 ?

These tramps don’t have the players they’ve had in recent years. And that scrotum Gary O’Neil doesn’t have enough ability to get more of a tune out of what he has. They’re a bit shit as the season has so far proven. If they weren’t called Wolves some would worry less about this game. I expect us to win if we play to our ability and not make stupid defensive errors which we can be capable of. The league table will look rather nice come 5pm Saturday.

Growing up in Telford in the late 80s/early 90s there seemed to be (ignoring the random Liverpool/Everton/Man Utd/Spurs people who aren't worth bothering with) more Villa than Wolves because they were in their death throes. From the few occasions I've been unlucky enough to return, I think they're more dominant now, so it's probably a big deal there. Here in my in-laws' village further south, it's probably 50/50 (again, ignoring the dick teams), but I wouldn't expect any aggro were I to celebrate a goal in the local (which I won't be doing because the football gods/state of the local).

It means more here, but not a lot more.
