Shrewsbury had a few last glimpses of his talent. He's still thought of fondly by a lot of them that saw him play there, including something like a 5 minute hat-trick.

He was the hero of my childhood. They say never meet your heroes. I did. And he was everything I imagined him to be. And more. He's leading the attack up above now for the rest of the Holte Enders In Tbe Sky. Thanks for the memories Gary...one of our own.

Such terrible news and so upsetting, it's really difficult to find the words to describe just how special he was, especially to us, on so many levels. He had the lot. Young Brummie playing for the club he loved, handsome lad with a cracking haircut, a great technical footballer - he wasn't just a goalscorer, he created them too, it all seemed so natural for him, he really made it look easy.

Watching him come into the side and deliver week after week at the very highest level during those few short years is something I'll never forget. When defenders couldn't cope with his skill and movement they'd often give him a hefty kick or two. He just got up and carried on. No fuss. Plus he knew his teammates had his back, he was the gifted kid of the team yet played with such maturity, way beyond his years. He was loved by all yet was ridiculously modest for someone so talented.

I was fortunate enough to have met him a few years after his injury when he turned up to give the prizes for a 5-a-side competition. Looking back I just think why did he bother, he could have been doing a thousand other things but there he was, no fuss, giving back to his community when nobody expected him to. Afterall, he was Gary Shaw, the Aston Villa legend with a cabinet full of silverware.

What a player and what a man. Rest in peace, Gary and thanks for absolutely everything.

So saddened  to learn of his passing. Like many of my generation I feel blessed  to have seen him play and will be forever grateful  for all he did for the club. RIP Gary

Rest In Peace Gary. Such sad news. Brilliant player who was sadly overlooked by England, utterly ridiculous! Scored some nice goals and always troubles defenders with hard work and a bit of movement. Go and have a game of golf with Paul Birch. Thanks for the great memories. Thoughts to the family too. 😢

We've lost a hero, a friend, part of our youth.

Please can we change RIP to Rest in Peace, just seems more appropriate and fitting for a hero.

Scored the only goal when they knocked Wimbledon out of the cup, too, back when Wimbledon were top flight.

I'll always remember him as the kid who had everything:

A good looking Brummie lad playing for Villa
Scoring for fun - on and off the pitch
Winning trophies and the adoration of the Holte End.

He was everything that we hopeless park kickabout,  jumpers for goalposts wanabees we're never going to be, but we lived out our dreams through him.

Thanks Gary - you gave us much more than you possibly realised.
RIP
HEITS

All the more outrageous that he never won a full England cap when you consider some of the absolute carthorses who have been given them over the years.

Absolutely gutted at this sad news. Gary was one of us in every sense. His career at the highest level was all too short, but what he achieved in those years is incomparable with those who went before or have come after him.

A legend in every sense of the word. Only a year or so older than me. Thank you for those memories, we won't see the likes of you for a long time. RIP

I’m gutted.  So very sad.

I'm honoured to have been on the Holte for those golden years - what a player, what a star, a local hero.  I hope the Holte End can sing his song next Saturday.  There'll be a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes for sure.

Rest in Peace Gary Shaw - taken far too soon.  I wish it wasn't so.
