He provides combat in the midfield particularly in the air,but lacks the passing ability to be anything other than a stopper against a very strong and organised midfield.

I thought he was solid enough today but kept getting in a mix up with Kamara and Tielemans in the first half as to who should be doing what. I thought he was very good in the second half and showed a few flashes of driving with the ball. I don’t think any of our midfielders were helped by Watkins and Rogers inability to offer decent options or hold the ball up. It meant we were continually turning the ball over and had to go back into our defensive reset.

Still wondering if he has the technique to be an above average midfielder.

On today’s showing as there was very little time and space in the midfield, No. if you saw how Kamara was able to often come away with the ball and pass it, Onana didn’t.
I thought Tielemans would have been a better option in that position today. There will be other games where Onana will be fine and his ability in the air is very useful but he lacks a bit of technical ability.

Some of this is harsh on Onana. He played solidly today and, at times, very well. One of our better players today. The one who deserves criticism is Rogers. He has looked off it since January. I am sure he has had good games sprinkled around this year, but he goes missing too often and should be on the bench next week and for the foreseeable. At the very least, try to play some of the other players to see what they bring.

He is a quality player, but he is not undroppable.
