The reality is you can perfectly afford to buy the real thing

Tell my 18 year old, minimum wage - earning lad, who paid £55 quid for a ticket on the Holte for Arsenal last week, that he can perfectly afford to spunk £80 for a shirt that will be replaced in 10 months

Think the point was that people are quite happy to support things they know are awful rather than go without something that they deem too expensive. I'd say your 18 year old probably doesn't need a new  jersey this season, but he wants one.

‘Robbing the club’

I paid £135 for two authentic shirts last week that have a value close to a tenner, only one direction any robbery is happening.

As for the rest, good on you, I’m sure you will get your reward in heaven for the virtuous life you are leading.

The shirts we all know will sell for £20-30 in 10 months time?

Or maybe tell your lad if he only has enough money to buy one thing or another, maybe he should choose which one he wants more?

Pretty sure if I’d only had enough money for a Twix as a kid, my parents wouldn’t think it was okay for me to rob a Mars bar if I wanted that too.

I get the criminal element, they're a bunch of wrong uns. But the reason I buy something, is specifically for a want/need for that product.

I'm no Scouser, stuff splashed with brand names isn't for me. But if I wanted say a pair of jeans, then why would I buy something that isn't that brand of jeans? The £100 you might save doesn't make up for the fact you haven't bought what you want.

Some great parental advice going on here, cheers. When he gets down from the chimney I’ll tell him he must save harder.

And if anyone is genuinely interested in adidas’ murky business and sports politics history, Barbara Smit’s Pitch Invasion is a fantastic read. A few Villa refs in there as well.

Go on, buy it for him. Have a heart for the poor lad!

Last night he was in the pub with his mates in my 1987 Hummel away kit. Original, not the fake version that Villa sell in their club shop these days.

Some of the fakes are better quality than the real stuff .

There's a difference between a want and a need though. You might need a new pair of jeans, but you don't need a pair of InsertBrandName £150 jeans.

Mines coming up to the age he'd fit in the old Muller ones. They'll be at my parents but I reckon I wore mine to death with the 1000s of goals I scored for us in my back garden.

So now he’s wearing stolen goods? Robbed off his own dad?  :P

I’m not trying to be an arsehole, I’d be a shit parent.

I just think a lot of kids are bloody brainwashed these days. Everything has to be a label, and you have to have a phone that costs the best part of a grand, and you need Netflix and Spotify and Xbox Ultimate and god knows what else on subscription.

And then they wonder why they don’t have any money left. It’s the modern culture to want everything I guess.

Would we all have the same moral objections to watching ‘unofficial’ streams of Villa matches?

Feel free to ‘plead the 5th’ but surely the same arguments against apply?

It's odd to see the younger teen-ish generation turning so hard back to "fast fashion". It doesn't feel that long ago that the younger generation had been putting pressure on Primark and sweatshops and the likes, but now Sheen, Temu, AliExpress etc are all doing massive business and none of the people using them seem to have a single qualm about it. Capitalism at work, I guess.
