I think that's why the criticism of the recruitment bods appears a bit off. We've boxed a lot smarter than Newcastle managed last season, who were similarly trapped by their own success. I think we're a better side than Newcastle with a significantly better manager too, but they're a useful comparison.

The issue is if we finish 7th and go in conference league are players like maatsen going to want to stay? He already said CL was one of the main reasons he signed for us

I can see a situation like that arising. I do think whoever said kamara will be moved on next summer is spot on. Thats exactly what the club will do as be pure PSR profit

I'm as disappointed as anyone that the big Dutch lad, whom I'd never heard of a month ago, isn't coming, he looks like he would have been an ideal upgrade on Cash.  The rest of the business I'm good with - I think the chance to sign Maatsen was a "too good to turn down" opportunity that emerged in discussions over Kellyman and they have wheeled and dealed to right within the limits they could.  I think if they made a mistake, it was assuming they could have easily shipped out Donk/Carlos, which obviously hasn't happened.

I think the issue is you worry too much about how awful things might be in the dire scenarios you dream up, constantly, and then you pen it down and despite you not knowing a Michael Jackson pun when they hit you in the face, I read it.

So far today what if we finish 7th, what if our best players leave, what if Onana gets a serious injury, what if Kamara is months away. I'm surprised yesterday was not what if Skynet really did become self aware at 02:14am Eastern Time.

They may look dire - but alot of people were highlighting the concerns last season about how we wont have money to spend to compete in CL. And behold look whats happened.

The above is a very likley scenerio should we fail to get CL. If you choose to not think thats a realistic scenerio thats your choice.  But i feel its a bit naive to think our better players will stick around if a CL club comes calling if we ourselves dont have CL next summer.

I would say if unai does it this season and gets CL it will be a bigger miracle than last year as this squad isnt as good as last seasons

Today is going to be Demitri saying the same thing over and over again.

Lets see what today brings. I reckon a loan or two possibly

But this is the joy of this site, broad spectrum of optimism in the face of reality, and utter despair in the same reality. The rub will come thru sheer luck. I'm a "would like us to be a bit more prepared than 1 injury from trouble" camper, but I'm happy to admit I seem to feel the same at the end of every summer window. Sometimes I'm right and we're in a bad place, sometimes I'm wrong and we're OK. I think we got a kind ish draw in the CL so have a chance of increasing that revenue this season, but are over reliant on the manager over delivering again. I know that he's smarter than me though, and likely we'll be OK.

We are very light in defence, at right back and centre back.

I tend not to agree.

We have Konsa and Nedeljkovic covering Cash and Carlos, and Bogarde covering Konsa if he were to get injured or moved out to right back. Yes, we pretty much all agree that we would like an upgrade on Carlos, and yes probably we are not as strong as we would like to be going into the Champions League, but I think we are being hampered by the UEFA wage limit to be able to replace him. I also think we shouldn't forget that Bogarde was pretty much our best defender in pre-season.

For me, if there is any wiggle room at all, I think we definitely need to bolster our attacking options.

We certainly need another nr 9

Ned and Bogarde an injury away from being regular starters (or in Ned’s case potentially already there) is a concern given the level we want to compete at. Relying on Ty to come back and be up to speed is also a potential issue. We’re basically reliant on not getting an injury to Konsa or Pau.

We’ve got 2 9’s so we really don’t need a specialist 9…if we need an attacker it is one who can play a couple of positions across the front line.

Centre half better than Carlos who can play right back too is far far more vital for me

Two injuries surely? As things stand, one injury at centre-back sees Diego Carlos playing in place of whoever is injured.

Thanks for that useful insight in the future can you provide the euro millions numbers tonight as you appear to be able to look into the future?

I cant remember you saying anything about not having money to spend. All I can recall was you suggesting we'd throw leads away all the while after you lost your mind over the Brentford draw.

We didn't finish 4th because of divine intervention, we finished 4th because we are really good. It's a shame for somebody that places stock in faith, that you apparently have none.

Yeah that’s true I suppose. Although one of those injuries has already occurred.
