I think if philogene hadn't been ours and come back there would be a little more hope that he can replace Diaby than we're seeing. Until he got injured he was probably the best player in the championship and had a record equal to the last year at that level for Bowen, Eze and Olise. I think he's a very good addition and with everyone back I think there's plenty of goals in the forward line, we just need Ollie to lead it.

Hopefully we’ll buy at least 2 more proven quality players. We definitely need them in central defence and to replace Diaby.
Ideally we’d replace Luiz in midfield as well but I can’t see 3 coming in, unless we offload a few more. I think we’re a bit light quality wise at the moment but let’s see what the next few weeks bring.

I do wonder if Emery sees Lo Celso as being able to replace Doug if rumours of a £10m bid are true. He's played in a lot of roles, but spent a lot of time playing deeper in Spain by the looks of it.

Im sorry but this would be like a poundland replacement for doug. I hope it isnt true.
Furthermore he is never fit! Thats the opposite of dougie!

I’m not sure I understand this argument about replacing goals scored last season by departing players. Everybody starts on zero. Luiz doesn’t come with 10 goals and 10 assists in the bank for 2024/25. Diaby wouldn’t start on 10 goals either. He would have to do it all again. It’s way too simplistic

Quite.

If Luiz and Diaby hadn't been here, someone else would have scored the goals.

I dont agree with that.

Diabys work rate and pace was what made his so good for us early in season. Dougie is a rare one. He scores goals, creates can take set pieces. Not many in our squad that have that in their locker.

Thats not even mentioning both of their fitness records. Youri for example has been quite injury prone in his time here

Luiz scored one direct free-kick and two direct corners in his life time. And 5 penalties with one miss as he only started taking them this season. Whilst Tielemans doesn't take direct freekicks, he has scored 24 penalties and missed 5 in his career. So for at least 5 of Luiz's goals could be accounted assuming we get five or six pens.

I expect that Luiz was first choice for set-pieces because he was there, others will just take the mantle

Can you name me another player who has scored two goals from direct corners in one season in the last 12 months?

Thats remarkable he was even able to achieve it

They were great, but you don't get extra points for it. One was in a cup game at Bolton, and the other was in an all round atrocious defeat to Arsenal. Man City appear to be doing OK without anybody scoring directly from corners.

We've sold 2 players with nearly 40 goals and assists between them last season, I can't see that amount coming from the current crop of new signings, including a returning Buendia.

Concede less and we can reduce that number anyway. With JJ coming back in, Rogers with a full season and hopefully a few more from set pieces I think it's conceivable that we could cover that amount.

Edit - between them Dougie and diaby contributed 27 goals and assists, nowhere near 40

Let's face it Diaby was good in patches but nowhere near consistent enough.

Click on the article, and press Esc a few times as it loads. Bit of a knack , but you should be able to get article up. It makes a few good points.

Ross Barkley scored 5, and had 6 assists last season. Luton had 5 penalties, which he wasn't taking. Doughty was on corners and got 8 assists.

So to say no-one can replace Luiz 10 goals and 10 assists is too simplistic, put Barkley on penalties and corners and i reckon he could match Luiz output from last season.

Of course he will be missed, but we have enough quality players who will score and assist to the same level.

Haha! So now what you're saying is you want us to find a replacement who will score twice direct from a corner?

Ashley Westwood did it twice in the PL for Burnley, over 2 different seasons.

Steve Staunton did it at home to Palace.

Whilst we'd have preferred to keep hold of Dougie and Diaby, I don't think it will impact us at all.

Both went missing on occasion, and when their minds weren't on it, being truthful, they were bloody terrible. I don't have a clue how we're going to perform this season, but I'm buckling in for the ride!

IMO, key area is RB, which seems to be progressing with the talk of this Dutch kid coming in, and a back up/partner for Ollie. Need Tyrone back asap too, just to steady the ship in the backline - Torres is a beautiful passer of the ball, but desperately needs to bulk up a bit. That little push that knocked him off the ball for Dortmund's second at the weekend was unforgiveable for a top drawer centre half.

Just looked, was created as a McGrath goal but he definitely didn’t get a touch.
