Good luck to him. I don't think our loan moves are entirely about potential to play for Villa any more. He gets a better salary than he would get if he went to a club like Stockport permanently, we get to sell him for a few million if he does well. It's basically footballers as stocks and shares and, while I don't particularly like it, it seems to be part of the game in the FFP world.

Stockport got promoted.
Looking forward to him scoring on the 3rd December :D

Not looked, but I can guess who they play that day

At his age the contact extension feels very much like an investment for a decent fee a little further down the line.  Which is pretty sensible business.

Yep, feels to me like our youth team is basically a separate entity with the goal of hoovering up as many decent young players as possible, train them to the point where they can go out on loan, then let them out on progressive loans until they hit (about) 22 then sell them to a club at roughly whatever level they're playing at then.

Not that it's necessarily a bad thing you either us as a club or the players, but maybe as a supporter it's a bit disheartening that you don't get any romantic notions of having players cold through the youth team, then in to the first team, then become captain, then the face of the whole club or even city.

Then they fuck off to collect trinkets in Stockport, obviously.

I'm sure that the best case scenario is that all the young players we buy turn out to be the best players in the world and our first team is full of players we bought at 16 but it just doesn't work like that does it. It's not a seperate entity but it's all a gamble.
We now have a very good academy and so I'd expect that in the next 2-3 years we do see some of those breaking through into the first team

Plus, we are now fighting in the top four and Champions League. So every season the bar for academy graduates has gotten higher.

We are now expecting our youth players to break into one of the top 20 squads (currently) in world football. That is a pretty high standard and we’ll be lucky if one comes through every few seasons.

We are also signing 20 year olds and younger that will be part of a CL squad. So it’s more about is the player in question good enough to contend for a place. Louie isn’t going to another PL club or even to the Championship. He’s back in League One. I’d hoped by now he’d be at a club on loan at a higher level.

Definitely. But he could smash it in League One and be in the Championship in January.

He looked fantastic for them last season until he got that bad injury.

Yes, still full of promise. Players develop at different rates/ages.

I hope so. He came to us from Barcelona with so much promise. He seems to bit slight to me, but he’s playing against blokes in League One. It would be great to have him come through or worst case give us a future solid sale value.

So tedious.  "Tap in Merchant" about one of the most respected and informed football journalists in Europe who probably breaks 10x more transfer stories than the next closest.

Going through daily life must be absolute hell for someone like you.  This coffee isn't good enough, why is the bus one minute late, that pork pie is a disgrace....

Glad it's not just me that's getting tired of the constant needless negativity.
