I guess if you judged most of our players solely on the last few weeks of either the Smith or Gerrard eras, most people wouldn't choose any of them either. McGinn was getting roundly booed at one point.

We know, you started it!

McKennie couldn't even be bothered at Leeds. 'Overweight, lazy, didn't give a shit' is the general consensus from his time at Elland Road.

Sometimes you can't totally ignore the sight test. Marlon Harewood and Emile Heskey, for example, looked liked bollocks deals at the time. And so it proved.

I can see your point, but Barkley is undoubtedly a talented player. He's just never shown it regularly enough and at times it's looked like he can have a questionable attitude. He wouldn't be coming in to be a mainstay of the squad though, he could just be a very useful addition to cover a number of spots.

If we sell Luiz then it's just him or Tielmans alongside whoever we sign to replace Kamara or McGinn.  I can see him getting loads of game time.

On a different point, I like Gallagher, but he's no Luiz replacement if we do go down that route.

As much as Tammy did a job for us back in the day (was it really 5 years ago ?) I find it pretty uninspiring to be linked with him again.
Is it just lazy journalism or could there be something in it ?

Same here, hoping it's just lazy journalism.

There was a lot of talk last summer that the deal was pretty much done until he had an ACL. In fact, the ACL practically proves he was a Villa player!

When you have an ACL, there's an increased risk of another. With us already having Mings, Buendia and Kamara already giving us that risk, you wonder whether we would intentionally sign someone with that inherent risk. On the flipside, if we could get him for £8.5m, perhaps they would be willing to take that calculated risk?

Of course, they could just go and get En-Nesyri for £15-20m.

It's really interesting, isn't it? You would think some of these clubs would prefer having a bit more of a safety net. It's not like it allows the bigger clubs much more of an advantage. Oh well.

I'm amazed.  It seems most of the 'other 14' are happy with a Big 6 and are more fearful of the likes of us and Newcastle spending a bit more than they are with a permanent glass ceiling 6.

If the majority of clubs believe they can operate within the existing rules and think that the extension benefits the rest then it makes sense.

Barkley worries me because he's only ever looked decent when he's been the key player for his team, as soon as he's a support act he looks like he doesn't care. Maybe he's grown out of that and given it seems a dead cert that he's coming i really fucking hope he has but he'd not have been on my list. I do think though that he's been signed with a view to complimenting what we have not replacing anyone so I'm less bothered than I am by the other links which I suspect would mean Luiz leaving.

I could accept Gallagher because whilst I think he is a bit of a bull in a china shop I think there's enough there to work with.

McKennie is just not very good, I remember a few years back loads of people on here wanted him and I just couldn't see what the appeal was and I've never changed my mind.

Fundamentally I think losing Luiz and replacing him with Gallagher or McKennie would see a big drop off in technical ability in favour of physicality and whi;lst I agree we need to add some more power in the squad I don't think either of them are worth the drop off we'd see. Personally I'd prefer to see a big but technically proficient player come in who can play DM or CB and give us a bit of cover for both Kamra and Mings as they get back up to speed and then in the long term that player replaces Carlos as our 4th CB.
Personal circumstances have changed for Barkley.First time around he was living alone in the Belfrey.
I think he will have a fine season for us.

Southgate finally grows a pair after years of including people he shouldn't have. I'd feel hard done by if I was Grealish, especially with the likes of Phillips being included for ages when he wasn't playing.

The mayonnaise people will want their money back too. Although him being in your back garden while the Euros are on is more realistic now.
