Idle pondering about possible squad next season… I wonder if the dream is still to consider Pau like the left side version of what Konsa has been this season - If *either* side could be the ‘attacking’ one, depending on the opposition each week.

If we have defensive mode with  ‘defensive fullback’ (ie Konsa, Digne, or if Pau can be made to work out there) paired with ‘hard working’ outside midfielder (Ramsey, McGinn), and and alternate attacking mode with aggressive over/underlapping full back ( Cash, Moreno) paired with aggressive outside midfielder (Bailey, Rogers). A full squad would be a nightmare for opposition teams to guess which side to prepare for.

The ‘problem’ this season is that with Bailey’s form he’s mostly undroppable but the gap in natural positions between him and Konsa can be an issue - it’s not solid enough to be the ‘defensive’ side but Konsa doesn’t naturally provide the width to be the ‘attacking’ side.

It would mean, ideally, a core defence (Pau, [Mings/Carlos], Konsa) that slides across to accommodate the appropriate full back each game. Obviously, it would all depend on whether Emery really thinks Pau can do what Konsa has done this season.

I don’t think we will have huge changes this summer, but it will be really interesting to see who we target as a signal of how the team structure will change. How fortunate we are for once to be in a position where we’re reinforcing from a place of strength - as noted above, any player we approach would have to at least give some consideration to what we’re offering.

Another i would like is ferguson of broghton but he will be very expensive. He looks to be the next big thing

Ferguson, 19 years old , 6 goals in 36 games (1720 minutes) this season
Duran, 20 years old, 6 goals in 29 games (884 minutes) this season

Given they'll ask for an amount of money that would break our transfer record it would seem like an odd use of our resoures.

He looks a very good player, and Brighton have been mostly shit this season so probably not the fairest time to be looking at his record. But yes, I imagine they'd be looking for their usual upwards of £70m. We almost certainly don't have that, and it doesn't seem to be our way of doing things anyway.

I'm sure he'll turn out fine in the end, but that seems generous to me. His lack of goals are presumably one of the reasons Brighton have been mostly shit this season.

To put it another way, if we were currently mid-table, Duran had been starting regularly all season and not scored since November (as per Ferguson), then I imagine on here the consensus would be that Duran was part of the reason we weren't doing better. Even allowing for his youth and inexperience.

I think people are confusing the Ferguson that burst on the scene wit the current version.

On the other hand, he's a 19 year old youth team product. We paid £50m+ for Diaby, a full international who has scored one goal less in a third more playing time, in a much more successful team, with a better manager. And people are still prepared to cut him some slack. And let's not forget, they managed to get £60m for Cucurella, who was shit, is shit, and probably always will be shit.

Ferguson is pretty tidy, but the big test of a young player is not usually how they burst onto the scene, but more about how they adapt once clubs have worked out how to stop them...

So to spend big on Ferguson when we have a similar player already at the club in Duran, doesn't make either financial or footballing sense to me.

I'm not saying that Brighton supporters shouldn't cut him some slack. I've no idea if there is any slack they need to cut.

I'm just saying that Duran's performances have been just as promising for us as Ferguson's have been for Brighton and even if we could afford to buy him there's no reason we would need to given what each has shown in their short careers so far.

I can't see big changes either to be honest unless a number of players leave.  3 key areas that need strengthening for me are at RB (though we've got the young Serbian kid coming in), defensive midfielder (more athletic version of Dendoncker) and possibly someone who can play in the left side position as and when Ramsey is not there.  If we don't have the bad luck we've had this season, then that should be fine.

Rogers plays on the left side when Ramsey's not available, we just need to give him time to develop. Buendia will be back too.

We need a more technical DM than Dendoncker. The brief should be to find someone who can become better than Kamara.

I think Kamara is going to become better than Kamara.

He will but next season is just going to be about getting him playing again and it's a tall order to expect him to be at the same level when he comes back. He won't be at his best until the 25-26 season.

He's not even going to be fit to play until November at the earliest, is he? Which probably means January, the way these things tend to go.

Rogers played well there against Brentford, but I'm not sure the defensive side of his game is good enough for him to play there for a long run of games (that might well improve over time of course).

Agree about the central midfielder, especially as Kamara will likely be out for the start of the season.

Yes, good point.
