Flip it another way. We’ve only lost diaby, Luiz & Kamara for a lot of this season from the team that did get Champions League football. Since then we’ve strengthened with Onana and Maatsen plus have Ramsey, Buendia and Mings to add back to the fold. Then there’s the strength in depth offered by Barkley, JPB in particular. Plus a full season of Roger’s and the continued improvement of Duran. Arguably that’s upside vs last season’s team, particularly if we get a new RCB in.

As it stands I feel like we’ve slightly strengthened the squad if we don’t suffer similar long term injuries to last season. Imagine we’ve still got another player to come in too. Spurs look like they’ve strengthened a bit by signing Solanke but otherwise our rivals for the 4th spot seem about the same as last time too.

I'm more concerned at no cover at LCB for Pau Torres - Mings could take another 6 weeks or so before he's ready. At least last season we had Lenglet as cover. We're still light on strikers as well. Surely there's a couple more signings incoming before the 31st? With 8 Champions League games on the horizon, some extra strength in depth is required.

I don't think it's strange. We sold Dougie and opted for two young players with a lot of potential in
exchange. In midfield we've got Onana, Tielemans, McGinn, Barkley, Rogers, JJ, Bailey, Philogene, and possibly Barrenachea, with Kamara on the way back too. Maybe we could have used him as a wing back, but I can't see him getting much playing time for us this season.

Suppose I was thinking what are we going to learn about him playing for Bologna that we didn't see when he was at Juventus, just expected him to be around either our squad or an another PL one. In truth I am really still just unhappy that we have come out of the Doug deal looking to be on the wrong side of it.

He's very promising, and played for Juve's first team, but most of his appearances were from the bench, he was not a regular starter at all.  He made the same number of "appearances" for Juve as Jhon Duran did for us - and like Duran, they were mostly from the bench.   This is not a slight on Iling-Junior (who is still younger than Louie Barry and clearly has big potential), merely a reflection that he doesn't actually have a huge number of first-team minutes under his belt yet.

If Unai doesn't think he's ready to play a big part with us this season, then a loan makes sense - but only if he's going to play regularly.

After that injury I can’t see him being back up to speed much before Christmas

That’s a good point.  No one has really strengthened this window.  Maybe West Ham, but we had a head-start on them anyway and then beat them at the weekend.  Chelsea too, but they re a basket case.  Same applies to Man U.

There is no JPB. Do people not read the team list? Squad list? Match reports? Other posts or threads? Look at his shirt even? Listen to interviews? Match commentary? Read articles on the press?

I get your points some valid- but i just dont see this team finishing top 4 again.  I think the same problems are going to arise fatigue/injuries and the players who will come in wont be able to consistent do it. I really did think we were going to bring in some serious quality - that can compete in CL

Im just fearful that the three players coming back from long term injuries will either have another injury or take time to get back to where they were.

Its going to be a long season i hope im wrong but i am abit concerned about it

Omorodion has joined Porto for 12.5m so he's off the list should Duran be sold this week. Hopefully that is all put to bed now though.

I don’t see us getting 4th either.  For that to happen, based on their spending power, we need three of Man City, Liverpool, arsenal, Man U, Chelsea and Spurs to fuck up and that wont happen very often.  A few more seasons of European football and that gap will close and it’s important that Europa isn’t seen as failing in my opinion.

We have Kamara and Mings back soon.  Two players good enough for the top sides.  We have JJ fully fit.  We have to be a bit patient.  Onana is an excellent signing.  Duran will be better this season too.  We have more height, more energy.  I hope we sign another number 10 to really give us additional creativity but that's all we are lacking, other than a more dependable right back.

There's no God either but people bang on about him all the time. :P

Think we will be looking at a couple of loans now, if our preferred targets are unavailable/unatainable, we seem to have a fairly focussed approach to our transfer business.  Although if Hermoso is still without a club it would seem to be a fairly sensible move.

Add Ned and the Baron to that, and Kamara is back in no long time. What about Bogarde as back up RCB, very impressive performances from him in pre-season.

Carlos has played on the left before, if we're keeping him.

What a bunch of bedwetters we have on here. Villa are top4. We were top4 last season. We will be top4 this season and top4 next season. If our own fanbase don't believe it how can we moan when the national press/social media ignore us. Get some backbone some of you. We've got the best manager (bar none) in the world. The best goalkeeper in the world. A squad full of international players and some future England stars to back it all up. Be loud and be proud.
